LEOOFBORG Whatchu talkin' 'bout Richard? ;-) 1Password3 works GREAT with Snow Leopard. No more Input Managers, works out of the box with current cutting edge Camino2 and Firefox3.5, even WebKit nightly builds. Seriously folks.. stop using the Keychain and turn off password saving in all of your browsers [except Chromium, but I expect that to change soon]. 1P2 was very good, 1P3 is a worthy upgrade. I've been using it since it went beta as a 1P2 user. 1P is one of the few apps that I will upgrade without hesitation, over any other 'beta' app. The devs really know their stuff and are VERY supportive of their users. If you're having a problem drop them a line. One of the few apps I can really give solid 5's to... highly recommended. (Version 3.0.0)

VMware Fusion | Oct 28 2009 |
LEOOFBORG All these 'reviews' about the 1st launch day will be meaningless in a couple days, so let's get to the meat: 1/ VERY COOL that I don't have to boot the kernel in 32-bit mode to run VMWare Fusion anymore. 2/ 1 hour to install XP Pro from scratch with an ISO image, update to current, and run. You should all be saying 'impressive'. This on a MacBook Pro last gen. 3/ Even more cool that the hypervisor is 64-bit. I don't have to run smcfancontrol to cool things down unless I'm using XP to render something. 4/ The Hypervisor seems to be tidied up. When I single user boot I don't get all these chatty messages about hypervisor this or that. Thanks, VMWare. I like the new persistent menu item and the fullscreen view controls. Basically? VMWare 3 feels like Snow Leopard. Tidy, compact, functional. I did notice some minor bugs with Unity but nothing serious or fatal. (Version 3.0)

LEOOFBORG Lessee, nobody uses Real anymore for streaming, and all those 'old files' can now be played with variants of MPlayer or VLC. ILGAZ I have no interest in your political rather than technical issues with Realplayer. It was always a Cocoa/native application which works just when needed and a nice shell for Quicktime Framework and an option to play mp3 radios (.pls) without launching iTunes. If you don't like Realplayer for some reason or your windows past, OK, fine but please stop spamming macupdate. Real did nothing to Mac users and they kept releasing current software even before SJobs came back to Apple and everyone in industry were abandoning Mac users. (Version 11.1)

1/ No apparent upgrade policy for Mac users from 6 to 7. 2/ As others have said, there are encoding tools like Handbrake, FFMPegX, as well as players like MPlayer OSX Extended and VLC that make this obsolete. For me, I'd 'upgrade' this if they had a policy to do so, but DivX has not been a mainline encoding tool for me for quite some time. (Version 7.0)

LEOOFBORG These reviews just aren't fair. If you chose NOT to 'enhance' Adium or iChat, CTM worked just fine. Maybe a little burp here or there, but it worked fine. To be fair, other 'enhancements' like Textmate input manager stopped working well long ago. This is more about Apple securing the OS and denying such code injection functionality because it's NOT secure. It's good to see Unsanity put some time into CTM. I paid for it long ago and haven't regretted it, having used it in Leopard the whole time. (Version 1.1.3b1)

LEOOFBORG GNOMMAK, I didn't blame you, 77swords and you did good work to get this hack of MkvToolnix to work. It's a good solution if the user is experienced enough. I only wanted to tell the developer how to properly build the application, and tell other users why it doesn't work without your libs, or ones they have to compile from source-code. The problem is that random files posted to Rapidshare could be a security risk, or be incompatible with other user's machines [PPC/Intel/Universal]. I'm sure you would agree, right? (Version 2.7)

LEOOFBORG I emailed Moritz about this, and he is the admin of the MkToolnix *site* and not the distro. The MacUpdate admin really needs to correct this and put the *real developer's* contact info so that person can build a proper distro. 'Proper distro' means putting the libs in the application bundle or in /Library/Application Support/ and not in /opt or anywhere else. Again, not everyone here understands how to build from source; or uses a package manager like Darwinports or Fink. (Version 2.7)

LEOOFBORG GNOMMAK's solution 'works' for MkToolnix. It's really the author's fault for not linking inside the app bundle. The two places that the libs SHOULD go is either inside the app bundle or into /Library/Application Support/MkToolnix/ /opt/ is usually reserved for Fink or Darwinports as far as I know... I've emailed the dev asking him to either put the libs in the bundle or have a separate installer for the libs, and haven't received a reply yet. There are other devs who handle external libs gracefully; MPlayer has a separate pkg for codecs, and FFMpegX has a dialog that tells you you need the libs. So there are other examples of 'the right way to do it.' (Version 2.7)

LEOOFBORG I don't know about the rest of the users here but for me and other folks who spend hours if not days in front of the computer like web designers or programmers, MercuryMover is a godsend. MM fills the need of 'old school' folks like me who are flirting with RSI, and don't need our hands on trackpads and mice, who want to keep our hands on the keyboard. Anyone who uses vi or emacs and wants their tools like that knows what I'm talking about. Example. I have a MM shortcut [made via cmd-d] '9'.. what this does is put any window from any app to my page 2 monitor and max it to 1024 x 1280. In English: when I want to read anything in Preview, WebKit, Camino or Mail on the other monitor fullscreen, I can either go thru the laborous RSI laden mouse moving, or I can invoke 2 keyboard shortcuts and done with ANY app, not just the ones that have a fullscreen zoom. I think it's well worth the money I spent. I definitely miss it when I move to a guest mac or one where it's not installed. (Version 2.0.3)

LEOOFBORG I've gone thru a number of GTD type apps; and things does what the others don't do: It scales. You don't *have* to use all the features, for example, I don't use tags at all. I went from a few items to a rotating list of 20 things, a couple projects and no areas of responsibility [as of yet]. What I *do* appreciate is the sync with the iPod Touch app, and the ability to drag email msgs and other linked assets into 'Notes' for when I need to work such things. What cinches it for me is that the Dev is *constantly* bug fixing, and has really thought out how things flow between your Desktop and your iPhone/iPod Touch. Basically there are two apps I can't live without, and this is one of them. [The other is 1Password]. (Version 1.0.3)

My bad. 2/ The author's support page is very complete. I'm surprised he's only a teenager. This is really good work. 3/ It's possible to have Little Snitch and Leopard Firewall running and have iVPN do its thing. Just add exceptions to vpnd / racoon. 4/ You may have to start the server with PPTP and then add L2TP/IpSec later. That being said, everything hums from my Mini 300 km away to my machines out in the countryside. Nice work. LEOOFBORG So let me get this straight -- 6 real months of real dev so that we can get ONE major different features [for video geeks, okay, I get it]. If this was worthy of being called Toast 9.5 I could see them rounding up. But this is, at most a Toast 9.*2* with the one major feature. Roxio should NOT be rounding up this time. This is just crass. Also, Roxio's idea of 'Pro' is to add... shovelware? How very Windows. Sorry Roxio, but how stupid do you think Mac folks are? I also don't see any Cocoa or Interface Build controls to make this look more 'Mac-like'.. tho' I could be wrong. Clarification: It's NOT 79-20= $59 .. it's '$79 after $20 rebate'.. MacUpdate, you can do a better editing job than that. All around, this is a bad deal at the current price point, and to folks who bought Toast 9. They still haven't fixed bugs from Toast 9! My advice is to wait until Roxio drops the price about 3-6 months from now. Toast 7 folks should upgrade. Toast 8 and 9 folks, really think about this. Seriously. (Version 10)

PlugSuit | Jan 2 2009 |
LEOOFBORG Kosovar1, I have to sympathize with the dev, most of them would rather code than write up docs. And you're getting this for free. SIMBL's docs tell you how to de-install it, and where you should put plugins. That is at culater.net, not at this dev's website. That being said, read my comment above, as well as the docs of any of the SIMBL plugins that you have installed. You can also go into PlugSuit's prefPane to see which plugins are controlled and which are not. HINT: In the prefPane, use the 'Gear' button and 'Reveal Extender in Finder' to see where you have the plugin installed. I would then move it out of your User and into the /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/ path. But that's just me. I don't like stuff all over the place. (Version 1.5.7)

PlugSuit | Jan 2 2009 |
LEOOFBORG Plugsuit shows some promise. What it should be really useful for is turning on/off such things as SafariStand, Keyword Manager and other SIMBL based plugins to isolate bugs. And for the most part it does this. To disable SIMBL, go to /Library/Input Managers/ and zip up/throw SIMBL in the trash.. THEN restart and install PlugSuit. There. Fixed that for you. I have found some issues. * PlugSuit doesn't always run at login time. Meaning 'Hey, WhereTF is SafariStand?? *Sigh* Go to Preferences and fire it up. * SIMBL plugins load sluggishly. Run iPhoto.. huh? Where's KeyWo... oh. There it is. * Some plugins don't work at all or load rarely. I'm looking at you, Blurminal. My advice is to keep a zipped copy of SIMBL in where you found it. However, I am beginning to like Afloat. If the author adds a menu item to tell us that PlugSuit is 'on' that might be a nice think to do. Also, finer control of keyboard shortcuts so as not to conflict with Butler, MercuryMover, etc. In other words, better status display and finer control of prefs. (Version 1.5.7)

LEOOFBORG I'm a registered user of SpyderX 1.4. I have to say that initially, given all the MySpace spam it seemed like a good idea at the time. But over time I found that version 1 was very clunky: slow to fetch data even on a 6M/s DSL connection, and about as complex as using MySpace just from the web page. I basically gave up on SpyderX. For my needs I now run FLOCK, the web browser. The UI is a lot more simple [friends sidebar] and you can do everything necessary from a SIDEBAR. And not only with MySpace [read on]. So if you add Glimmerblocker [to filter ads] + AdBlock Plus [to get the insidious stuff] to Flock you pretty much have an effective social network wrangler that does not only MySpace, but Facebook, Flickr, and a bunch of other services. Maybe the author has done some improvements, maybe he's more accessable to his users [this time], maybe... well, for me, as far as version 2 goes, unless it's a free upgrade for me.. I think maybe [based on previous experience with the app, keychain bugs, etc] it's a pass this time. (Version 2.0)

LEOOFBORG Another tip: Running GB & Vidalia/TOR at the same time. When want to run GB 'all the time' and also want to engage TOR sometimes, here's what you do. 1/ Install GB. Leave the default port setting of 8228 and make sure it says 'GB connects directly to http servers'. 2/ Now install Vidalia.. but in *its* network preferences, make sure you *change* it: first, tick the checkbox that says 'I use a proxy to access the internet' and make sure the 'https' checkbox is *unchecked*. GB is running.. so start TOR.. then in FireFox use 'SwitchProxy' to select your TOR setting which should point to 127.0.0.1:8118. Try https://check.torproject.org and if you see the success page you're done. Yeah, I know, why run a proxy in a proxy.. (Version 1.0)

GlimmerBlocker | Nov 23 2008 |
LEOOFBORG Since my last review I've done a number of things with GB, and now it's my favorite blocking agent. 1/ I had words with the Dev. He's very thoughtful and open to ideas. 2/ I added a 'first filter set' called 'Whitelist'.. here you put router ip addresses, bank, etc sites that you don't want GB to mess with. Don't publish this one. ;-) 3/ Using the 'Suspects' tab it's EASY to add additional sites, even by regex just like AdBlock. And remember these work with any browser that uses 'Network' settings [see below to add FireFox, etc]. I agree with the author that with a proxy you don't want to be as strict as AdBlock with some sites. They break too easy. 4/ GB 'just works' in Safari, WebKit, Camino, and OmniWeb. And any other browser that uses Apple's Network settings. And it covers your active network sockets automagically. Go from Wireless to Ethernet. Plug, unplug, no problem. When you turn GB on/off it tells you. In fact, since Camino and OmniWeb have AdBlocking, it's like web nirvana. If you add SafariStand for manual plugin loading, it's reallly nice. In fact, Safari is really snappy with SafariStand + Sogudi and nothing else, other than GB. Sorry PithHelmet... :( 5/Here's a tip: For FireFox/Flock you can use the "SwitchProxy" add so that you can use GB in those too.. then add http://127.0.0.1:8228 to the proxy list.. I use this to switch between GB and TOR with FireFox and Flock. For those of you who are on the fence, seriously, try this. Easy install. Easy de-install. It's like running Privoxy but without the pain of configuring by hand. (Version 1.0)

LEOOFBORG This really works.. much as I like PithHelmet, it's been murder on my system with both Safari and recent builds of WebKit. I've even made a few rudimentary rules and it works like a charm. I just wish, that since it's a proxy that it would work with Camino, Firefox, etal. Also, if we were somehow able to import or subscribe to AdBlockPlus feeds.. oh, that would be nirvana. LEOOFBORG As an additional comment, I've found another stupid bug: Diskwarrior will rename Knox [or maybe other] disk images as the root disk. 0/ Root disk is called SPIKE. LEOOFBORG Mini Review. As you'll see from my comment below, I find DW to be useful.. on external hard disks. I find Time Machine [and/or Superduper] and Applejack to be *much more useful* for disk fixing and backup recovery. You don't back up? In this day and age? You rely on vendors with slow update cycles? [Not just Alsoft..] Sucks to be you. That aside, I was also able to update my DW 4.1 CD to 4.11, with the following bug-- DW's 'CD Update App' recognizes, but then does not use the Disk Burner that you specify. It will even READ from the burner just fine! However, during the 'burn phase' it will just sit and sit and sit. Even tho you have chosen the supported DVD external burner, and it has read! Basically the updater will wait for the *internal* or first burner in the chain. Stupid. If your *internal* burner works you have to insert a CD *there*. So, Alsoft, thanks for the useless popdown menu, burner selection *does not work* correctly. Three stars for DW still being somewhat useful in this 'era of OSX' that Alsoft hasn't quite caught up to, -1 for releasing this slightly buggy updater as well as the byzantine process. Aside to German and overseas users:: I feel your pain. When I lived in Germany we just learned to do without, that is, back up and find other, cheaper, and sometimes better tools. (Version 4.1.1)

LEOOFBORG Leopard [with Time Machine] basically makes Diskwarrior obsolete. And I'll tell you why, as a DW user since OS9 days. It's two words: If you've been using Time Machine for a few weeks, and your disk becomes unusable, then you boot with your Leopard CD, and run the Time Machine application: * It asks you for the Time Machine disk you've been using, * It erases your boot disk, * It restores EVERYTHING as it was. The way DW used to 'save my bacon' in OS9, Applejack and Time Machine have been just as useful in OS X. As other users have said, Alsoft has not changed with the times and now, like Allume/Alladin and Stuffit, they've been left behind. When was the last time I made a *.sit file? About the last time I booted the DW CD.... Basically after last year's MacWorld I discarded Disk Warrior as a serious tool due to their spotty support. I mean, it took them *this long* after the release to come up with a CD upgrader? That now doesn't work with Macs from *one year ago*? Please. I *do* use it to check removeable disks, but as a primary disk tool? Nah. That's what diskutil is for. And recovering files? That's what Time Machine / Super Duper / Carbon Copy Cloner are for. I will be VERY SURPRISED if there is a DW 5. (Version 4.1.1)

LEOOFBORG This is an AWESOME port of MPlayer. Previously I could ONLY do what could be done using terminal commands; in addition, the author has cleaned up some freetype/font config bugs that kept me from seeing styled subtitles the way they were meant to be seen. Add to that EASY font color [for SRT] and scaling, even of styled fonts, and MKV chaptering [only available via Quicktime with Perian, *not* VLC], and MPE is a winner. Yes, there are minor little bugs [like forcing aspect ratio broken], but at this point MPE's a winner. My nephew and I [Macross Frontier fans!] thank the dev. Fantastic job! Also: The source builds very easily. Thank you for putting the source up as well! (Version rev6)

Again, developers do not have perfect information, I'm sure he's more concentrating on coding now and not licensing. I recommend that all of you who got in early on the promo _ask nicely_.. LEOOFBORG I bought this because earlier iterations saved my butt. There are a few burps / questions I have for the author so I will take those to email. The author is open to version the software any way they see fit. If they stream a fix but no new features you may just see a date change or a build number after the version in 'Get Info'. This is standard operating procedure. Concerning the pirate users below? You get what you deserve. Barring that, you are very ignorant of Unix. You -can- unintentionally wipe directories, give bad permissions, etc if you have a low enough user id or use sudo. What's the difference between sudo rm -Rf ~/Users/name/Library/Caches/* sudo rm -Rf ~/Users/name/Library/* ..you'll find out really quick, ScriptPuppy. I hope you back up. I have seen a lot of bugs, and a lot of shellscript based applications. I have blown up a few directories in my time and have had to restore from backup. Sorry, but you are WRONG. Finally, if you pirated the software you did NOT enter into a contract with the developer. Go ahead and TRY and sue him for your data loss. Courts in the EU and North America will laugh at you. Finally, you may read this blog entry about how I feel about whiners and script kiddies. If you found a bug, email the author. If you didn't pay for the product [yet] then expect to be thrown lower in the queue under the customers. And if this program is useful -pay- for it. Virex 7 Virus Definitions | Dec 30 2005 |
LEOOFBORG Virex 7.2x still works with Tiger. Barring that there's Clamav. The point is, Virex, like PGP has outlived its usefulness on Mac. The Virex folks decided to go a way that Apple didn't want to go, so now they have an incompatible product. I don't see Apple compromising on this issue; so you can either stay with Virex 7.2x, or go with another solution that is neither Virex nor Symantec. I'd give 7.2x 4 stars for doing what it says, and give 7.5 -1- star for Virex being so darned stuborn. Virex 7.2 is still a viable product on Tiger no matter what their marketing people say. 7.2 works, 7.5 caused instabilities when I tested it. I basically abandoned my license and DO NOT recommend 7.5 on ANY Mac system. (Version 12/28/05)

Service Scrubber | Dec 21 2005 |
LEOOFBORG Peter Maurer. My hero! First Butler. Then Textpander. Now this. Yes, as MacBeth said, the Service Manager PrefPane has been around forever, but it was always dicey with /System based services like System UIServer's 'Open URL...' and some non-compliant apps like RealPlayer's like 'Open URL in RealPlayer'. I couldn't change the key combos in one and could not get rid of the other! Service Scrubber changes that. Perfect access and administration of all services, wherever they may be. If you want Services to bend to your will and actually -use- the 'menu, you need this. (Version 1.0)

LEOOFBORG While the new UI looks great, this probably has to be the first widget with -dropped- features that has gone to x.5. * The 'External IP" feature didn't work for me, but still does with the older NetStat widget. * Where did the "Open TCP Connections" feature go?? This was -extremely- useful!! *In fact, please add Open UDP, unless you cannot use this feature. 5s and 4s across the board except for 'Features'. Developer, please document feature drops. LEOOFBORG With all due respect, the reviewer is smoking crack. I paid for this when it was still called Jaguar Cache Cleaner, and didn't pay again until -Tiger- Cache Cleaner came out. Programmers have to eat, and if you can't afford 2 cups of Starbucks for your friendly neighborhood shareware author then you should learn the Terminal commands. Northern Softworks has done a good job of documenting what exactly they do with TCC, so you -could- just RTFM and use the Term commands. Or you could just be lazy and whine. I would -NEVER- run system tasks from the menubar. That's just asking for trouble. Basically I use Tiger Cache Cleaner and Applejack, and my machines are happy. (Version 3.0.6)

LEO OF BORG O. M. G. Turly's back!! When I migrated to OSX all those many moons ago it felt... diminished as a Mac, and not because of the Platinum UI, either, but because of little Utils like this one... Sure, Abracode and Unsanity have stepped up to the plate. But this was, and is the original. Where do you think all those funky xxx-**** listings came from in FruitMenu? ;-) Everyone, start saving your coffee mun for Turly's Pints..... (Version 1.9.9)

LEO OF BORG Hmm... this is just me, but now there's too much clutter in 2b10. I've written some bugs off to the developer, not the least of which is that it's botching import of MM/DD/YYYY formatted QIF files from Bank of America. That being said, the dev has always been responsive, and there doesn't seem to be a shareware limit on this beta -- very cool, I will probably upgrade... But write some more bugs first. ;-) (Version 2.0b10)

LEO OF BORG Just my 2 yen, so keep the change, but: 1/ The Dance of 7 Veils that you have to do for installation is for your own good. Whenever you make low level changes like this you SHOULD have a backup. That's why the author is so keen on this. 2/ I used APE based haxies for awhile, too, but so sorry [to the Unsanity folks], now that I am APE free my systems run with more speed and stability. If you REALLY want to use Shapeshifter there ARE utilities out there that will take the resources folders in Iridium and convert them to .gui and .dlta. Just bear in mind that there are those of us who use our computers for work and don't need a theme a day convenience like Shapeshifter provldes. (Version 1.6.3)

LEO OF BORG You know, it really takes a lot to make me gush like a fanboy, but ditto what the other poster said, this REALLY is the shit. Designers and techies like me who sit in front of LCDs all day DO NOT need crud like 'traffic buttons' and beveled menus, etc etc etc. Any color other than GRAY blows our colorsense when working on web or print layouts. Apple got this message years ago when they made Platinum. Then desperately NEED this message again. Until then, we have this theme. Kudos to the Developer for stepping up. All this author is doing is swapping out Finder resources. I'd say that you carry the same risk running third party apps to do this as you do running the Bash script that does it the Unix way. Yes, these are system resources, so BACK UP. That's just prudence! "You've done a man's job, sir!" - Edward James Olmos, Blade Runner (Version 1.5)

Sp@mX (SpamX) | Aug 9 2005 |
LEO OF BORG Oliver, you make some assumptions. The fact of the matter is that most users DON'T report spam at all, so any tool where the users CAN and DO is appreciated by the ISP. Most ISPs don't act on one report, but on a number of reports in batch. The more reports, the more serious the spam. I used to work at an ISP -- we would use 'Elm' and cull from the main abuse inbox. I would tag and take 500 emails with the same subject, examine a couple reports, deal with the Spammer, and then send 'ThankYous' to the other 498 reports. False positives I would either ignore as a 'slip of the keys' or email the user our 'are you sure this is spam' template. Even 10 years later, I see the same modus operandi. Tip to Sp@mX users: DO NOT CHANGE THE SUBJECT of your reports! If ISPs are now 'scoring' Spam via database and regex it will be based on the subject of the original spam.. and don't worry about a couple false positives as they will not be acting on ONE report. OLIVER BREIDENBACH Despite all these noble efforts, Spam has not decreased. Spamming Spammers is not going to stop them, they know their trade and can work with Mail rules (and regex) just as well as you can. Amazingly, there is a technical solution to the spam problem, but the IT industry seems to be unwilling to implement it. They prefer a "war" were spam is fought with more spam. Sorry, I don't buy into it. (Version 4.2.4)

LEO OF BORG Funny. None of what the other reviewers wrote has happened to my machines. Unlike some other -free- apps, this one does what it says -- and is the perfect thing if you happen to be running a Tiger Server [who needs Spotlight and Dashboard running on a -Server-]?? All this guy goes is set flags and kill services. Example; if your SystemUI Server doesn't start right back up [and your MenuExtras, that Apple does not support] don't either, then you need to look to other problems on your machines. I have tried -other- AS Studio type apps that have done far worse to my machines than this one [like NOT setting the right permissions on the /etc/hosts file]. (Version 1.2)

PGP Desktop Home | Jun 1 2005 |
LEO OF BORG Well, I finally downloaded B3 (yes, this is still beta). Observations: * The gpg mail bundle [aka the gpg plugin for Mail 2.01) has better options (like auto-decrypt of msgs by Keychain), and is MUCH more practical (like full display of signing and encrypting keys. So you can guess which one I disabled. Yes, there is a manual mode for those of us running proxies, but as I state above the Mail plugin is CLUNKY. If you're still an Entourage user their scripts are fine, but if you're in Mail 2 already, disable the plugin from PGP.com and use the other one. * The UI is very pretty, but that's not why I bought PGP. I'm sure they paid their UI people very well, and there's a lot of back patting going on there. But it's not useful. * Again, encrypted chat is wonderful if anyone would use it. For the home / casual user, the price is too high, and there's too much bloat in PGP to justify this. Corp users will have to standardize on this beast or face conflicts from other plugins, etc. * This is just my 2 yen, but MacOSX has outgrown PGP. We have FileVault / SecureVM in Tiger, and the ability to make AES-128 disk images in Disk Utility! Couple this with FREE downloads of GPG packages that do not have to be compiled, and the Mail plugin (search this site), and it quickly becomes apparent that PGP 9 is merely a 'secure tax' for Windoze users. LEO OF BORG InvaderBlue, please check your email. For everyone else, the /etc hostconfig file is written back with the wrong permissions. This -can- cause problems (and did for me). If you use Version 1.01, you -might- want to open a terminal and type the following command: sudo chmod 744 /etc/hostconfig then all is well. For the technically inclined, after running DTF 1.01, this is what you'd see in /etc: THORIN:/etc leoofborg$ ls -la | grep host ---x--x--x 1 root wheel 247 May 24 07:50 hostconfig -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 247 May 24 07:49 hostconfig.bak Note that root and wheel don't have read permission to the file. Ooops. config files are not executed, they are -read- as far as I know. The point is that the hostconfig should have the same permissions as hostconfig.bak (the copy I made before running DTF 1.01). Running the chmod command should fix this. (Version 1.0.1)

LEO OF BORG The developer is definitely on the right track here.. however, a -warning- for those disabling Spotlight with 1.01. The author added the feature that deletes the /etc/hostconfig file.. if you use this, you -might- have this file deleted from your system without a new one placed in! when you reboot, you may not have any way to mount your hard drive!! This happened to me, and I had to create my /etc/hostconfig from scratch. I've emailed the author about this. I recommend you backup your hostconfig file before using 1.01, and be prepared to copy it back in single user mode (this will restore boot function if this happens to you.). Before everyone overreacts, bear in mind that some of the other utils (like Applejack) had growing pains too. I hope InvaderBlue can debug this.. (Version 1.0.1)

LEO OF BORG I'm REALLY disappointed with PGP at this point. PGP has joined NAI (the Virex people) in having this fetish of being really intrusive into your OS. Making their own *.kext files, running intrusive proxy processes, etc. I did -not- buy Tiger to run ya-proxy process on my box. I want my PGP plugin AND THAT'S IT. I don't need encrypted chat (actually I do, but NONE of my friends runs or cares about PGP, so it's a moot point). If I could go back to PGP 8.x I would. So, I'll probably update _GPG_ and use that. Earth to PGP.com: Fire your marketing people, and bring Tiger compliance to PGP 8.x. We are NOT interested in PGP 9 in its current beta-quality form. Want to prove me wrong? Write a white paper on why I should upgrade then. As for encrypted chat? I'll wait for the next iteratation of MacOSX when Apple can do it RIGHT. (Version 9.0.1PB2)

LEN WHYTE Absolutely agree. I was appalled to see the extent to which PGP9 installs into the OS. And it doesn't even work properly for a user other than the installing administrator. LEO OF BORG Tiger comes with Secure VM. Meaning that the swapfiles are encrypted on the fly the way your /User folder would be. It's not necessary to 'secure delete' these encrypted files, they are 'unix deleted' on the fly as they are not needed anymore. Just go to the Security PrefPane and check the 'Use Secure VM' checkbox. (Version 3.0.1)

ANONYMOUS Encrypted isn't the same as gone. Unless that function is in the open-source (Darwin) part of the OS, none of us outside Apple have much of a chance of determining just how securely the encryption is handled. Since secure delete can probably be done via the command line in Terminal it is probably very easily added to PCC/TCC. (Version 3.0.2)

LEO OF BORG Yup, I read the author's page, and yup he's making it out to be harder than it is. I don't know what's harder, digging thru my ~/Library/Widgets/ folder or digging thru his list of both stock and User widgets (and not knowing the difference. If you want to make this thing useful, here are some pointers: 1/ Discern between /Library and /User/Library widgets. 2/ Find some way to do version checking on the widgets so that we have the current ones (impossible, maybe). This might be your first programming effort, so.. um, nice job, but please don't take user criticism lightly. (Version 1.0)
