LEESA  Don't use this with Leopard!

When I used the installer that came with this it changed the name of my Desktop Folder to "system47.saver" and made it into an application. Scared the crap out of me because all my files that had been on the desktop disappeared. I had to find the file that used to be my Desktop, Show Contents, change permissions to get them out of there, put the saver/desktop folder in the trash and Restart to get a new Desktop folder.

Sheesh.

Why does a screensaver need an installer script anyway??! I know where to put screensavers.

LEESA  that's great news, thank you.

mailtags is an excellent app that quickly became totally essential to me dealing with my mail. it was so much a part of my daily life i've even considered switching back to tiger just to get all the features back.

i look forward to the next beta!

LEESA  I bought and loved this app when I was using Tiger. Now that I'm using Leopard the only thing I purchased it for is gone: todos. I loved being able to sort my inbox by due dates as well as being able to rename the subject of those items. I mainly used it for sorting ebills.

The todos Leopard Mail offers are useless for me, I never wanted to have to have another window open to see my todo items. And until Apple offers a way to sort by todos in the inbox, I almost don't see the point.

Developers: please bring back this functionality in MailTags! I feel like I spent the money for nothing. :(

LEESA  good lord man, chill out. you sound like your head's about to explode. talk about being overly sensitive.

I was just pointing out that the guy was going to keep hearing this stuff and a possible reason as to why that was. I never said anything as silly as the name having "evil powers", just bad connotations that might continue to cause the developer problems.

I understand what you're saying about people being overly PC, I'm certainly not one of them, but I disagree with some of your examples. Its about the subtlety of context, for instance; a harddrive cleaning app named "House Jigger", or a banking app named "Dirty Foo", etc. The name of the app, along with a diary icon (which he's since changed) just looked borderline bad for the app.

Look, I'm not being overly sensitive, I'm just making conversation. I said in the post that I didn't think he'd meant any harm. And I meant none by my observation. Any negative comments I've made were in response to being called a "retarded" "small minded" "imperialist".

I was trying to be helpful.

My suggestion was simply that he consider calling the English localization of his app "My Head" (which is its name) to save himself the headache. Didn't think that sounded like bending to any uppity world view of linguistic colonialists...

Man, this is why I stay out of forums.

LEESA  i do like the new icon you've done for the app. now that it doesn't look like a diary it makes the association with that phrase less likely.

i agree with you that "My Head" is an appropriate name for your app, it fits the product well. Have you ever considered maybe calling the English localization MyHead, since you translated the interface anyway?

either way, good luck with your product. any offense was unintentional.

LEESA  ok, first of all, i'm not the one who called you a twit. i never called you names. i just tried to point out that your inability to understand why the name upset people was bad business and that calling people retarded was immature.

secondly, a lot of americans are NOT ok with george any more than the were with hitler. and who knows, maybe 50 years from now the name george will have such negative connotations here that it will be about as popular a name as adolf in the us (no one uses that name here).

I'm sure that in the countries where Bush is thought to be responsible for killing so many of their people his name is spat on.

I don't think having negative associations with the phase MeinKampf is egocentric, he wiped out whole branches of people's families. Mine, in fact. What imigration has to do with it, I don't know. Your true colors finally showing?

I said specifically that I didn't think you'd used the name intentionally. But after hearing you responses and attitude, I'm not so sure.

Looking at your other posts for your other software I notice you seem to have a habit of calling people names and getting into arguments with your users. So based solely on that I'd never use your software. You don't seem like a very nice person.

LEESA  How old are you anyway? Calling people who don't agree with your bad choices and insensitivity "retarded" makes you sound like a child.

Yes, there IS more to life than software or selling things- acting like a decent person is a good place to start.

But see, they DID have something to say. So much so that he changed the name AND the hitler icon.

LEESA  People keep arguing that any objections to the name of this app are evidence of linguistic ignorance and narrow mindedness (imperialism, even!).

But here's the thing- the people who upload and download software from this site are primarily English speaking. People in English speaking countries generally have negative associations with this particular phrase. While it's understandable that German speaking people would immediately see the differences between the two phrases, to most of us it looks identical. At minimum is looks like an attempt to be witty using a phrase that is personally painful for many people.

When you're trying to sell a product it's always better to err on the side of caution. It's just good marketing. I think it was an oversight on the developer's part, no harm intended. But he should be aware the title is something that will never stop being an issue for his product in North America. Its the only thing anyone's said about this app so far, and I think that will continue to be the case.

LEV  Oh for heaven's sake DO stop including everyone in your ludicrously oversensitive Weltanschauung (German for "worldview"). It's simply absurd to think that words have some sort of evil power because they sound vaguely like othe words. By that token we should get all uppity about words like "few", "jigger", "maggot", "stunt", "trick", "parky", "dongle", "wonky", "rich", "grape", "hypocaust", "bike", "suit", "plastic", "sago", "dog" ... well, perhaps you get the point. All of them vaguely rhyme with words which might be "offensive" to those whose idea of highly-refined moral sensibility is confined to experiencing a self-righteous affrontedness at every possible moment.

The "English-speaking" world also happens to speak an awful lot of other languages unless it's sunk in infantile neocolonialist isolationism. The fact that Adolf Hitler wrote a book called "My Struggle" ("Mein Kampf" in German) is nothing to do with the fact that this developer has written an EXCELLENT, fast, clean, small-footprint app called "MyHead" ("MeinKopp" in German). Or would you rather stop anyone from speaking, writing or thinking in German because some German people did something genuinely horrible sixty years ago? In which case it's goodbye English (masses of stuff) Spanish (inquisition), Portuguese ("discovering" America), Arabic (I'm going to stop giving examples now; you can think up your own), Yoruba, Latin, Greek, Turkish, French, Italian, Russian, Ruwenzoruru, Tagalog, Farsi and, quite probably, Linear B into the bargain.

Let's all like instead you know like be like "Whatever" in case we, you know, like, you know?, right? (But not, of course, in English.)

Fair enough... And I was just making satire, which is supposed to defuse stuff by going WAY over the top.

That's why I stay out of forums too.

LEESA  He wasn't making a "derogatory" remark, just warning people that it doesn't play well with a popular application. And it was specifically mentioned that all one had to do was add FF to ape's exclude list so it wouldn't be a problem.

What's the big deal?

HierarchicalDock

LEESA  I restarted my computer and it seems to have resolved 2 issues:

one click of the icon in the Dock brings up the menu.

and the hidden files are gone too.

but I still have the color profile changing and no flyouts of aliased folders.

Those problems are minor for me though, the one I have the biggest problem with is that clicking on a folder in the menu brings up the folder *containing* that folder, i.e. if I select Music in the menu what actually opens is m Home folder, which contains the Music folder.

LEESA  I have the same problems with this Richard mentioned: I'd like aliases to open out the same as actual folders. Also, I think selecting a folder from the menu to open that folder, not its containing folder...

It would be great if I could just press and hold the folder in in the dock to have the menu pop up, rather than having to click while pressing the Option key.

I also wish that hidden files didn't show up in the menus.

Something else that's just strange, rather than a real problem is that it seems that my color profile temporarily changes when the menu is being accessed.

Other than that this is great. I was using OldFolder but you can only have one folder at a time in the dock with that one.

AMCAN12  Why you need to press any key when clicking on folder dock to get menu?

Did you try a single left click yet?

LEESA  Excellent!

For everyone who finds stacks fairly useless and misses browsing through hierarchical menus from the dock, this app solves the problem.

I just double clicked the OldFolder icon and it asked me which folder I'd like to have in the dock. Now my Home folder is back in the dock where it belongs and working as it did in Tiger.

Thank you!

Journler
Sep 21 2007
***..

LEESA  I'd love to give this 5 stars but due to performance issues I just can't.

In theory Journler has everything I want BUT its really wonky and unstable for me.

I wanted to use it to be able to insert pictures into a single entry and put notes next to them- but when I did so it kept switching the inline images that were in the entry with other images from the same post. When I'd click on an image it would bring up a larger version of a different image altogether- seems it was losing the link information.

I didn't want to create a separate "entry" for every image I imported into the program... though that seemed to work fine when I did do that.

Also, when I tried to select multiple images in the Finder and drag them into an entry it could not maintain the links to the original images, clicking them in the entry brought up a blank window.

Another thing I didn't like was that the preferences and help file seemed to suggest that media (images) would be left in place on my harddrive and merely linked to, when in actuality they were being copied into the Application Support folder for Journler. I'd hoped they'd be left where the were on my harddrive and linked to, not copied. What bloat!

Overall the app was unstable, freezing, quiting and also needing to be restarted to reflect my preferences changes.

I love the concept of this program and I'll download a new version once these kinks have been worked out.
