A friend of mine recently introduced me to Firebird, which I learned is essentially just the OpenSource version of InterBase -- something that's been around for more than two decades and is a) extremely lightweight and b) extremely reliable. So reliable in fact that it's often use for embedded systems and the DBMS itself can be slimmed down to a mere 5MB (or so I read). Even still, my full working install has a bin folder of only about 8MB!

I've recently begun experimenting with this and am really surprised. For being such a tiny install, it's packed with speed and many of the same features you see in MSSQL, MySQL and PostgreSQL, but without the cost, bloat and weird syntax.

Full support for stored procedures, functions, domains, triggers, referential integrity, transactions etc. right out of the box. .NET providers and ODBC drivers are available as well as a number of free and commercial GUIs for management. Not to mention that it's available for a myriad of platforms.

If you're starting a small-medium scale project that needs a robust SQL DBMS, this might be worth a look.

No love here - still doesn't work in Tiger for me, sorry. The console shows this error message:

I would love to spend more time to try it out, but the 10 minute demo limit doesn't give you much time to figure anything out, let alone decide if this app is worth $80!

This FTP client is awesome.

It supports FTP, SFTP, SSH, SCP, WebDAV, WebDAVS, AmazonS3, AmazonS3S, HTTP, HTTPS, and File/Local.

The interface is excellent and easy to use. I disagree with the other comment made here -- I think Interarchy 9 is without question, the "prettiest" of all the FTP clients.

Bookmarks are easily accessible and can be organized any way you'd like.

The mirroring functionality is top notch, and I use it to easily mirror two file repositories of 40GB+ each without any issue. One of these repositories is standard FTP and the other is AmazonS3. The ability to schedule the mirrors makes for nice automation.

I've also used the SSH FTP support to manage files on my iPhone (which shows up automatically in Interarcy thanks to Bonjour).

The developers are some of the most responsive and receptive I've dealt with and I saw a number of my suggestions implemented during the course of helping them with the beta releases for this version.

I've used (and purchased) many FTP applications over the years: Cyberduck, VicomFTP, Transmit, FileZilla, RBrowser, etc. etc. and they all fall short.

Interarchy 9.0.1 has still got a few quirks but it is, in my opinion, vastly superior to the other available clients.

As has been said: wow! And VERY, very handy.

The only thing that could make this even more handy is if it also had the ability to display reads in addition to writes, but that might be asking a bit much :)

I blocked the outgoing request to the developer's site and it won't login to Google, saying "invalid username and password" even though I am copying/pasting my login info and can login from my browser with the same just fine.

This made me nervous, so I took a peek at the source code.

It doesn't appear to be doing anything malicious (though I'm not entirely sure), but it does send the DIRECT output of a Google Adsense request to a dynamic PHP script on the author's website!

The sparkIt.php script on the author's site in turn generates an image from Google's output, and the image on the author's site is directly linked to in the Widget.

I'm not comfortable with this because I have no idea what Google is sending in the output that is then sent to the author. Not to mention that it gives the author the ability to aggregate data from my account.

I personally won't use any app that sends personal data to a third-party service for parsing like this.

Darn. I was so excited to try this out (sounds awesome), but it won't work for me at all.

I put in the path to the working copy and nothing happens. Even tried escaping the spaces in the path with slashes. Nothing.

Bummer.

This is definitely quite cool and I really wanted to like it more.

Unfortunately, it's got a number of issues (I'll only list the most critical ones I experienced here and send the rest to the author eventually).

It's not a native app. It's Java and is VERY slow. That's to be expected, but what made it unusable for me wasn't the speed, but that it doesn't seem to be able to handle lots of groups with lots of images, resulting in heap memory and other weird errors (like "failed to select group null") every time it tries to start the scanning process.

Less critical, but equally frustrating is a usability issue when editing groups. When clicking on a setting tab for a particular group, the application tries to verify the connection to the server. If there's an error, it won't let you continue.

My ISP's news server has a limit to connections and will often time out. Because of this I constantly found myself retrying the edit panel tab click over and over again until it finally worked.

In fact, this timing out with my ISP caused the program to constantly behave in a less-than-graceful manner, repeatedly reminding me to "check the server name" even though that wasn't the issue.

Lastly, it seemed to hog my news server connections as well and there's no option to specify how many connections it should limit itself to in order to prevent that (such as with MT-NewsWatcher for example).

This application has got a lot of potential and "your mileage may vary," but right now it's a bit too buggy and sluggish for my taste. Here's hoping that the next version arrives soon and is much more improved :)

An interesting program, but it STILL has issues with way too many feeds to make it worth putting up with.

Case in point: after installing it, I immediately copied my Slashdot.org and Digg.com feeds into Newsfire and NEITHER ONE would display. It also seems to have issues with images embedded with escaped HTML in the body of articles too.

For what it's worth, you also can't remove his blog from the feed subscriptions in this free version. I suggest using LittleSnitch to block access to his site.

Blah.

I used Newsfire years ago when it first came out but switched to NetNewsWire because of this exact reason. I even ended up purchasing a license for NNW because it was a far better app -- it never had problems with any feed I threw into it. David on the other hand, responded to my "bug report" at the time with a simple: "the feeds don't validate."

I wish this was a better app. The interface is very nice and is the only reason that, despite David's shortness with his customers and potential customers, I continue to entertain the idea of even giving it another chance.

That said, I personally don't expect the free to last. Newsfire was free when it first came out, then wasn't, and now it is again.

Just thought I'd post an updated comment because my original one below is a bit outdated.

I've been using this for years now, and it is by far the best ER diagramming tool I've used on OS X or Windows.

Everything is straight-forward. You don't have to hover over buttons to figure out what they do and most of the work takes place in the canvas area (and optionally, the inspector) keeping you from having to constantly return to a toolbar or menu.

The layout tools are simple. Color, notes and canvas areas make it easy to organize and group segments, types and blocks of entities around the work area.

Printed output is fantastic and you can turn on page-breaks as well, enabling you to move objects to fit on individual sheets just as you want.

Import and export tools are awesome, and being able to see the raw query as you work is handy.

I use it for both MS SQL and MySQL. Though it doesn't (yet?) come configured to diagram for MS SQL Server, it is fairly trivial to get it configured for it in terms of diagramming. For MySQL and a few others, it's perfect out of the box.

The developer is responsive and the software is actively maintained.

For any serious DB architect on the Mac, this is worth every penny.

According to the site, it's $4.95 to upgrade from 8.6 to 8.7. I'm tempted to email them and see about getting a free upgrade since the only change they list is that it works with Leopard... and 8.6 already does work with Leapord (I'm using it right now)

Very nice, and I appreciate what this provides for the writer, but $25 for essentially a simple text editor with a full screen mode is way too much. Half that and I'd probably be purchasing my own copy. For now, TextEdit.app will suffice for me.

Yes, I said it was a missing feature and not a bug. :)

No, I am dragging on the top of the window... or anywhere for that matter. It always slowly grows as I drag. OS X 10.4.9, PPC. I'll make a video and post a link to it in a bit.

Very nice! I like how you didn't try to recreate Remote Desktop Connections preference panel and instead just used the profiles that RDC already creates.

If you're going to steal the icons, steal the grayscale one -- I actually created that one myself for RDCMenu :)

I'd definitely be willing to create an icon set for you if you do decide to setup a site for this little goody.

Remote Desktop Client ALREADY almost has bookmarking functionality -- it keeps a running list of recently connected servers.

I agree, $25.00 is waaaaay too much.

The good news is that there are already other RDC launchers out there (look for them here and on Google), or you can just launch multiple copies of RDC by duplicating the app.

This is a really nice, full-featured SVN client. One of my favorite things is that it's completely cross-platform and I can use an identical interface whether I'm working on a Windows or Mac machine.

Unfortunately, that's also its biggest downfall. The integration into OS X is limited. Drag and drop support is lacking and the UI is very un-Mac-like. There's also no "Reveal in Finder" functionality either, which forces you to have the project directory open along side the client.

If you're looking for a robust, stable, cross-platform client, this is an awesome choice. If you're looking for something that integrates seamlessly into OS X and the Mac OS workflow, you may want to keep looking.

I just played this game for hours and never had a single issue in either Hearts or Spades. It is *well* put together. The interface is easy to use and very nice looking. The game plays very smoothly and is actually one of the better implementations of the two games I've played.

Seems to work pretty well and has a nice interface. Works better than VLC anyway, since it doesn't popup all those errors and crash repeatedly. The player window is resizable and scales the movie accordingly while maintaining the aspect ratio. It also lets you open multiple videos at one time rather than being confined to a single player window.

There are two minor issues though. The first being that on many of the newer FLV files, the player doesn't always give you the video scrubber or let you fast forward/rewind. Which means you also can't see how far along in the video you are. The app also seems to load the entire video into RAM rather than "streaming" it from disk.

All in all though, probably one of the better stand-alone FLV players out there.

I forgot to mention that I really like the "project-centric" design of this -- you can open a new window and save a list of your tasks and times as individual files. This is handy because now I can save the records of my hours worked WITH each of my electronic project folder instead of one database containing all my work history.

Wow. FInally a Subversion client for OS X that appears to not suck and actually looks like a Mac app! Nice work.

Note however that the licensing for this is still up in the air and this beta version comes with a 30-day trial license. From the ZigVersion web site:

"ZigVersion is a closed source commercial product. The price has not been set yet, but we're planning on making licenses for personal, opensource, and educational use free."

So "Free" isn't probably the best description for this license :)

Apple's OS X Finder is a bit buggy and SLOOOOW (try working with a folder of more than a couple thousand files). But by far, the most annoying feature is that it drops little .DS_STORE files in *every* folder that you open. Not a major problem when working on only your own computer solely. However, they can show up in ZIPs that you create, on FTP servers when you upload and all over network drives (unless you know how to turn network writing of the DS_STORE files off via the command line or a prefs editor).

Buggy buggy buggy buggy.

The crippled demo really doesn't reveal the problems with this potentially great software. I bit the bullet and purchased a registration three days ago and have yet to be able to get a burned DVD out of it. The images that creates (while of decent quality) are always too big to fit on a DVD.

The process is easy enough, but without quitting the app between encodings, it also eats up a tremendous amount of temporary disk space and the end result is often a disk image that is double the standard DVD size.

The bummer is that the app is a great idea that I really wanted to work. Hopefully it eventually will.

Handy, but the interface is a little ugly.

Warning: This widget contacts the author's website at startup and also before it searches.

It appears to do the image search via their own servers and then contacts google to display the images, which is robably a necessity given how Google image search functions. However, there's no disclaimer or detailed information about how the program fetches the data included with the widget or on the author's web site.

So don't search for anything you wouldn't want someone else to know about :)

Note: This new version may prompt you to re-register for $15 if you registered Snak more than 2 years ago.

Make sure you have a backup copy of your old version before upgrading if you do not wish to renew your license.

I'm not sure why a point release of mostly bug fixes would require a license renewal, but I guess I'll be permanently switching to the free Colloquy since the old Snak 5.0.4 has too many bugs that make it difficult to use regularly (like chat input fields that quit working completely).

Wow! *Great* interface design. Very easy to use.

It often fails to remove apps completely though, because it appars to only be searching for matching filename data. It won't find installer packages if they are in the library/receipts folders, or any special hidden files or symlinks that the app may have created either for example.

And of course, I also wish taht it would allow me to drag a receipt package into it and have it scan the receipt to find files to remove in addition to scanning for matching files.

If those two things are added to this app, I will *definitely* be purchasing it.

icon

Date: 6 Feb 2006 17:28

:) A few more files for sure, but it's been spending hours going through my OS X Mail folders.

I cancelled it 11 hours into scanning though as it appeared to be partially frozen (the timer was still going, but the directory/file counter hadn't changed for at least 2 hours).

It would seem that it doesn't do well with huge mbox files -- which is a little curious since I would have thought it would have considered the mbox as a whole instead of looking at each e-mail inside it. Oh well.

Very handy and feels pretty stable. But that said, even though it's free it needs a little work: It doesn't look like an OS X app and it won't cache the thumbnails it generates -- so moving between directories is hampered by the fact that the app has to regenerate the thumbnails every time. A cancel button that responds quickly is provided though.

Out of all the project management apps I've tried, this one SEEMS to be among the top few in terms of interface and stability -- but I'm not totally sure due to the item/tasks limitation of the demo. Why can't any of the project management software developers realize what we need to properly evaluate their product in a real working environment?

A limit of "20 items" is a huge barrier when you're trying to determine if a product will really fit into the way your business works. Even the templates included with the software won't load completely due to the limitation! Trying to imagine if it will work for me makes it much harder to fork over $200 of my company's money.

The Gantt layout is nice and less buggy than the other software I've tried. The Netplan view looks interesting, but again with the limited items, it's hard to see how useful it'd be for me.

The only major thing that I'm able to gleem as a place for improvement is that the assets that you attach to items (docs, notes, etc.) feels a little buried and they aren't readily accessible in all views. It also continually switches view modes when you add an asset, which is somewhat annoying.

Seemingly good interface, features and stability, but until I can actually TRY it in a real-world scenario, I really can't say if it's worth the price.

After using it for some time, the only major annoying part about it that I can find is that short and long breaks are asynchronous and on their own timers. Meaning, the breaks can get out-of-synch and become unevenly spaced if you do a lot of skipping or pausing.

A more minor annoyance is that you can't skip micro breaks.

Used this for many months with the three hour limit before purchasing a license for it. It's been many more months since then and this little app has been worth every penny. It is absolutely stunning how many applications attempt to connect to various services on the net without asking your permission. Wow. Of the apps like this that I've tried, this is by far the best, for the following reasons:

* When the "take a break" message comes up, it doesn't take over the focus and allows you to finish up what you were doing (you can change that behavior in the prefs though).

* When breaks happen, it doesn't start the break timer until you wrap up the task you were in the middle of! The break message is still just obtrusive enough though so you don't forget :)

* The app automatically stops the timer between breaks when you're not typing or moving the mouse for a period of seconds, and starts timing again the minute you start.

* After a break, it doesn't start timing for the next break until you start working again.

Very nice work. Definitely replaces the old break-reminder app I was using. I haven't been AntiRSI long enough to rate the stability of the app though, which is why the score isn't quite perfect.

Has a lot of potential, but it's still much too buggy for daily use. The interface is REALLY nice, and I hope to see this get more well-rounded.

I'd like to try this out (if anything, just to offset the stupid posts about here), but it's a challenge getting a working demo of the app -- I'm still waiting for my demo trial key and/or .SIT extraction password to show up in my mailbox before I can even install the libraries!

And for $195, I'd expect it to be a lot easier to start testing it out.

On the other hand, it might take a bit of time, but all of the classes/tools/utilities that this provides can be easily added to your own RB apps without the need of purchasing this product.

If you're in the need for a suite of classes for rapid application prototyping and haven't already developed your own libraries, I can definitely see that where this could be a valuable tool.

If I can ever get a trial key, I'll add a rating here once I've actually been able to try it out.

REALBasic is a real language.

REALBasic is cross-platform between Windows, Linux and OS X.

The enhancements these classes provided are fairly easy to implement into RB without the need of spending $200.

Cocoa and the xCode tools are ANYTHING but easy for the beginning OS X programmer or the beginning to average programmer.

Stop wasting everyone's time spreading FUD about REALBasic and comment on/review the product being presented here (RbApp) after you've actually tried it out -- otherwise you sound nothing more than immature, inexperienced dolts. Just because some apps developed with REALBasic suck does not mean that the development suite sucks.
