KARX11ERX  If unzipping the textures, be aware that they are already zipped with a subfolder 'textures', so unzipping to e.g. c:\descent\textures will put them in c:\descent\textures\textures (WinXP type folder names, but I guess you get the point). Turn off folder usage when unzipping or unzip to your main Descent folder.

KARX11ERX  Are you using the PC Descent 1 data?

All missions on my Descent 2 site are contained in compressed archives. Usually these are zip files. Some missions are however self-extracting archives and hence MS Windows executables. That's how they were presented by their developers.

Please follow the directions given by simX, the MAC developer of this application, on how to install them.

KARX11ERX  I would love your support for D2X-XL?

There are a few remaining issues, like the new level format and networking not working.

You can write to karx11erx at hotmail dot com for details.

KARX11ERX  As v1.5.172 for OS X is causing problems for some users, you can download the previous version (1.5.147) from my Descent site.

OS X development is currently on hold as I don't own a Mac and the OS X developers have moved on to other things. You can donate and support my efforts by helping me to purchase a Mac myself so that I can provide up-to-date D2X-XL versions for OS X.

KARX11ERX  D2X-XL doesn't store the fullscreen info. It reads it from d2x.ini. There is no fullscreen option any more as you can always toggle it with Alt+Enter now (in the menus or in-game).

KARX11ERX  You can find the songs in mp3 format zipped on www.planetdescent.com. This will not allow you to play them in D2X though, but at least you can listen to them.

D2X-XL (a different D2X version) will support mp3 playback somewhere in the near future.

KARX11ERX  You can launch d2-xl with the command line option -debug-printlog. It will then create a file named d2x.log in the application folder (that's at least where it should be). You can open it with a text editor and search for 'd2x.ini' to determine where d2x-xl tries to find it.

From what you say about d2x-xl forgetting fullscreen settings I rather have the suspicion that it reads d2x.ini from a location you don't expect it to, and that fullscreen is disabled in that file.

KARX11ERX  The installation instructions state clearly that you need the retail game data.

I am not doing the D2X-XL port myself, and ofc those who are doing it don't have my intimate knowledge of the code. I would have fixed all issues within a week, had I a Macintosh computer. I am not rich though, so I am not gonna spend my own money on one - because I really only need one to fix D2X-XL (and make its Mac users happy).

You can support me by donating some money to me. At the rate donations are currently coming, I will be able to purchase even a used Mac in about 5 years or so.

I am not after your money, but looking at the number of downloads, this is rather saddening. ;)

KARX11ERX  Oops.

You may want to look in the wikipedia for the Descent computer game.

Descent pits you in a battle in underground mines infested with robots whos AI has been messed up by a hostile computer virus.

Descent is a mixture between a regular 1st person shooter and a flight sim. Just think of a groundpounder with strafing along the vertical axis added, and allowing you to roll along the ship's longitudinal axis. You will need to practise for a while be able to control the ship and keep your orientation, as often there is no real up and down, or floor and ceiling. In the beginning, enabling "auto levelling" may be helpful, as it aligns your ship along the nearest plane. Once you are more skilled, this feature is rather a hindrance though.

As Descent 1/2 are rather old games, all you have to do is to shoot everything that moves (apart from the Guidebot), and pick up everything that floats around (weapons and other stuff). Eventually you will find up to three color coded keys allowing you access to locked areas of the level.

Various powerups will help you in the game: You can find invulnerability powerups, cloaking devices, head lights, and ammo racks allowing you to carry more ammunition. There is no inventory system, so Invuls and cloaks are activated when you pick them up and work for a while.

To replenish your shields, pick up the blue orbs destroyed robots leave behind. To fill up your energy, pick up the yellow energy sparks or find a fuel center (usually these have golden sparks twinkling inside them).

Descent offers several cockpit views. All of them display your remaining shields and energy and currently selected primary and secondary weapons. You can display several types of auxiliary views using the Alt+F2 and Alt+F3 keys (rear view, guidebot view, map view).

To finish the level, destroy the reactor hidden somewhere in it and fly through the exit before the mine blows up. Instead of a reactor, you will encounter an especially big, tough and mean boss robot every once in while.

It is a good idea to save the big missiles for these encounters. ;)

The Guidebot is only available in Descent 2 (and 3). It can guide you to power ups, keys, robots and the reactor or boss robot. Again, for skilled players he's rather a nuisance. ;)

Descent 1/2 offer a map in the form of a 3D wireframe to help you orienting in the often maze-like levels. You will need some practise to be able to interpret it though. Special areas like energy centers are colored in the map. Gaps in the walls displayed in the automap often are hint to hidden doors and secret areas.

Some levels contain teleports (a floating red appearance) that lead to entire secret levels. Usually these levels rather contain puzzles you need to solve to access all the goodies contained there. You can enter and leave secret levels several times, as long as you don't destroy their reactor. It is not possible to save in a secret level, so may be a good idea to collect some stuff, return from the secret level and make a save game, before entering it again to gather more stuff.

Find a manual on D2X-XL configuration here: http://www.descent2.de/d2x-manual-1.html.

KARX11ERX  I know at least three, ShadowFury333 being one of them, and two guys who have registered on the DescentBB.

As far as I could find out, the first disk image contains the d2x-xl app and another disk image containing the SDL library the app needs. I am sorry for these complications, but I have no direct influence on this.

It is also not particularly helpful to state 'it doesn't work' but not to explain *what* exactly doesn't work.

As I mentioned here already, I don't have a Mac, and I cannot afford one. So if you're not a Mac noob, instead of moaning all the time, you could help me to get an installation format that is easier to handle than the current one.

If each one of the Mac D2X-XL (would-be) users would donate just USD 2,50 to me, I could afford a used Mac, and believe me, it would me take less than a week to get the program fully running. As it is now, your support is non-existant, so you shouldn't expect miracles from this free of charge effort of mine.

If I had quit from a task comparably 'daunting' as digging through two (let it be three, if you like) nested disk images, there would be no D2X-XL at all.

How about getting more constructive in the future, like the Windows users who have helped me to make D2X-XL what it is now, or the Linux ppl who are even sending bug fixes?

You want the program? Do something for it. I am not your slave.

KARX11ERX  Hello D2X-XL users,

I hope I am allowed to write this here. :)

I don't own a Mac and cannot afford one, so the Mac OS X port is not in my hands. The guys working on it have my full support, but don't have the intimate knowledge of the game code I have acquired during my time of maintaining it.

If you want to support me, you can head to my Descent site and donate some money. You can be assured that any donations made there will go 100% into this project. First thing I'd get would be a Mac to iron out the remaining OS X issues of D2X-XL.

KARX11ERX  d2x-xl running on one computer but not on another could rather have something to do with gfx drivers.

If files are gone after resetting a machine during a program freeze, these file could have been open, file info kept somewhere in memory, and due to the reset that data wasn't written back to disk.

I have at least heard that you can destroy your whole file system on Linux/Unix boxes that way, and OS X seems to be pretty similar to Unix.

KARX11ERX  A potential fix for the crash problem might be to place all Descent 2 data and the d2x-xl executable in a folder named /Application/Games/D2X-XL. (Put the mission files in /Application/Games/D2X-XL/Missions as usual.)

From a (d2x-xl generated) logfile another user has sent me today I had the impression that otherwise the OS X version will mess up folders.

KARX11ERX  To finish this, you have been no help at all. Instead, you have been complaining about the program in general, been touchy about advice given to you (emphasizing that at the age of 60 you don't need advice from me), and have generally addressed me derogatorily. My request to download the source code yourself and help us in fixing this issue (as you wrote you were a programmer), which was politely issued and a call to support us, has obviously been completely mistaken by you as an arrogant remark leaving you alone with the problem - which it wasn't at all. If at all, this says something about your perception of things around you.

Stop making this place a forum of your negative feelings.

#1 I only received a crash log after contacting you from my e-mail address.

#2 I kindly and in an absolutely acceptable way asked to get the source code yourself and debug the program in order to help us.

#3 I received a very unfriendly letter from you expressing your general antipathy and what you thought of me. You got the appropriate reply.

Apart from that, I have said everything before.

KARX11ERX  tracy,

a crash log had only arrived at my e-mail address after I had contacted you.

The crash log hints to D2X-XL not finding the D2 data on your machine.

Your post states a data path that is not being used any more - see the latest installation instructions.

You declined the offer to get the source code yourself and help us in fixing your problems.

You obviously are not acknowledging the fact that this is project done in our leisure time, brought to the public for free, where support is welcome.
