HoudahSpot
Jul 23 2008
*****

JTEAM  Absolutely thrilled with HoudahSpot.

I usually want to search my entire drive and having to, every time, include System Files in Spotlight was a real hassle.

To be honest, Apple should just buy HoudahSpot and incorporate it's capabilities into Spotlight.

Until then, though, this is one of my favorite utilities.

PS The developer has been *insanely* responsive!

Chax
Jul 11 2008

JTEAM  While I really like Chax (the sender icon in the dock is great), I can't for the life of me get growl to notify me of incoming messages. It works fine for user online/offline but not for incoming messages.

I'd hope the new beta would fix this but, alas, no such luck.

Canvas
Aug 8 2007

JTEAM  Having been orphaned by Canvas X, we have found that, at least for vector and page layout purposes, a combination of Intaglio and Pages works well.

Lineform

***..

JTEAM  With Canvas now orphaned on OS X, I have been testing Intaglio and Lineform to use with Pages as a substitute.

So far, Intaglio is the clear winner, particularly in its ability to deal with imported pdfs (critical as this is the way I need to get old Canvas data out). Lineform chokes on mine (causing both cores to run to 100% for minutes before I give up), whereas Intaglio brings them in, lets you ungroup and get on your way.

I really, really want to like Lineform because the interface is nice but until their parsing pdf routines become more robust, I am going to have to pass.

Maybe in the next version.

Dealing with pdfs is also helpful because that is an easy way to get an eps or ai file into Intaglio for editing. And, it exports in many formats including pdf, epsf and svg.

While some may claim instability, I have just worked with over 100 very complex cad images with tens of thousands of objects per drawing and not had a single crash.

Compared to Canvas, it is really a breath of fresh air!

JTEAM  Excellent little app, that I thought was destined to be forever non-UB (and thus banished from my new computer) has been resurrected as a UB.

Hurrah!

Vine Server & Viewer
Dec 20 2006

JTEAM  In addition to the Vine Server 2.1, which I am really enjoying, they also offer Vine Viewer 1.1 ($24.95).

Why pay for a VNC client when Chicken of the VNC is free? Four big reasons for me. 1) It scales the server's desktop so much easier to view a big desktop on a little MacBook. 2) It has built in SSH capability so that saves the hassle of creating ending tunnels 3) Clipboard support! 4) Really responsive support on their forums.
