JPP_ZOSO (former) long time opera user...since os/2 warp days, which i believe was opera v4.x. have finally given up after the huge disappointment that v10.x has turned out to be. i used to admire opera for constantly introducing new features vs. just copying features that most other browser developers were doing...but i fear this creativity and innovation streak has finally come at the cost of the core software functionality and purpose. widgets was the first clue...doesn't every os already have widgets? unite is the latest clue...do we really need this in a web browser? my primary use for opera, admittedly, was their integrated email client, m2. it has been several versions since m2 received any development time, so when v10.x was pre-announced as finally enhancing m2, i was pumped. sadly, opera has managed to fubar m2. it was, imho, the best mail client w/ no real competition, but opera managed to kill it. filters (including the built-in contacts) have been buggered up since v9.x and have gotten worse w/ each release. they're unpredictable, inaccurate, omit large portions of messages, and too easy to break. imap accounts no longer allow importing of mail locally. wth? significant rendering and printing problems for both plain text and html messages...wysiwyg not so much, largely due to weird scaling issues. the mac version launch times have gotten slower w/ each release since v8.x...v10.x is a joke on PPC, triple digit bounces in the dock, i kid you not. the browser has alway had strange issues w/ specific sites. whaddya gonna do when the world codes for others and not for standards? browser has always been top notch, but as with any browser, i doubt you could live with this one alone. on the plus side, the gui has finally also gotten some attention, and it is a huge improvement. kudos to the opera design team, especially john hicks. JPP_ZOSO same problem here trying to upgrade v2.x to v3.x from MU Promo...VMWare accounts web site is down for maintenance w/ this notice: "This section of the VMware website is currently unavailable while we make important user improvements and upgrades to the site. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please wait to submit any Web site orders until the site is available again." (Version 3.0) | |

Yojimbo | Sep 2 2009 |
JPP_ZOSO as per the developer's web site..."Store almost anything in Yojimbo — text, images, PDFs, even serial numbers and passwords." apparently "almost anything" is in fact limited to those specific items listed...text, images, pdfs. no license files, no dmgs, no zips, no audio, no video, no nothing beyond text, images, and pdfs. no way to batch import bookmarks. all of the new "features" revolve pretty much around labeling/tagging/organizing. the "fixes" included in v2.0 were already there in v1.5.2. still a monolithic file storage method. so the $20 upgrade cost is pretty much for a new application icon...? no thanks. i like the old icon way better. Volume Logic | Aug 4 2009 |
JPP_ZOSO just stumbled across this whilst perusing through wikipedia's entry on volume logic...relative to the main developer from octiv, inc leaving shortly after plantronics bought them out. breakway audio enhancer , the volume logic successor. windoze only application at the moment. forum discussion gives mixed signals on mac development, but it might be worth monitoring since none of the other audio enhancers match volume logic's performance or ease of use. JPP_ZOSO well, this latest update and announcement should open up the market again. lessee, beta 6 preps for version 4 and removes features because the users have spoken? i smell bs. no way i'm signing up for a google anything. news flash to news gator...there is a significant user base not interested in giving google their info under any circumstances. best of breed rss reader my butt. absolute deal breaker and no way i'm paying for this again. if i wanted to use google apps, i'd be using google apps. duh. buh-bye news gator. JPP_ZOSO is there a sync feature between/among multiple machines? this feature does not seem to be mentioned on the developer's web site. seems to me one of the primary goals for this type of application is to provide easy access to this type of data on all machines that need it...single machine solutions are a deal breaker. might also be helpful to add a workstation field for those software applications locked into a specific machine. Zimbra Desktop | Jul 25 2008 |
JPP_ZOSO the mac client is a joke, in particular if you're upgrading from a previous version. it will not receive new mail from imap accounts, despite being "online" and despite numerous "get mail" commands and restarts. the application constantly switches back to its default view options, despite numerous changes by the user to sort mail in a particular fashion or the reorganize the panel views in a particular fashion. there is no obvious way to import mail from any type of account unless the mail is already on the server...there apparently is a command line method, but it does not retain message dates nor register messages sent by clients other than itself as being messages sent by the user, then there's the whole "can't get new messages even from imap accounts" problem mentioned previously. the database email concept is an absolute killer idea if it were implemented properly...so far the only email client to do so is opera's m2. NetWare Client | Jun 2 2008 |
JPP_ZOSO prosoft has continued developing this application and now has a version that seems as stable as v1.3x. apparently the kernel panics and other problems i was having were unique to my environment, although it was never explained what was unique about the netware environment. not sure when or if v2.02b1 will be released to the public since v2.01 seemed to work just fine for all the other beta testers. in any case, i'm happy to say prosoft has been quite attentive since my last review and continues to provide feedback to bug reports and whatnot even for those incidents that on the surface have no connection to their software. if i could retract my previous review and replace it w/ this one, i would. dying environment or not, this client is absolutely essential for my job, and i'm glad the client now makes those connections worry free again. would be nice to see this client gain feature parity w/ the native novell linux and windoze netware clients some day. VirtueDesktops | Feb 14 2007 |
JPP_ZOSO beta 2 crashes w/o warning on both my powerbook (1.67 g4) and powermac (dual 2.7 g5) too. no errors, no warnings, didn't see anything peculiar in any of the log files. i think it started w/ the last security update (01/23/2007) from apple because i had been using beta 2 w/o any problems until very recently. went back to desktop manager for the time being...my only complaint about virtuedesktops is the lack of a permanent desktop pager or an expanded menubar pager. i'll likely have the same complaint about spaces when leopard is released. keyboard navigation has never been my mode of operation. OSS 3D | Nov 14 2006 |
JPP_ZOSO even after the 4th point release, this app still doesn't work w/ itunes 7. i give up. system sound is not impacted at all. itunes sound is not impacted at all. oss 3d settings do not hold between sessions, nor do they have any impact on the sound. click 'em on or off, no difference. slide the sliders all around, no difference. the only thing that has improved since v2.00 is the uninstall routine. just who is beta-testing this application and on what system configuration? i'm running a 1.67ghz g4 powerbook, os x v10.4.8 w/ itunes 7.02 and no other 3rd party add-ons...oss 3d no worky, at all. the only reason i keep trying the oss 3d point releases is volume logic has not released an update to their plug-in yet. volume logic was a much better purchase, and at least they haven't wasted my time w/ updates that don't work. NetWare Client | Jul 19 2006 |
JPP_ZOSO Started using v1.3x and have recently upgraded to v2.0. Have not had a single problem w/ either version. No crashes, no hiccups, no glitches of any sort. Simply put, if you need access to a Novell Netware network on OS X, the Prosoft Netware Client for OS X kicks too much a__! A few of comments for the developers if they're reading this. #1, I must say, I miss the menu bar functionality from v1.3x in v2.0, in particular once the connection is active. #2, Great job updating the user guide. #3, upgrade install from v1.3x to v2.0 was smooth as silk except the v1.3x client was not removed from my startup items...a "ghost" image was left behind and I had to mannually remove it.
