JOSDANS  Finder is constantly crashing since the 10.5.5 update. I have tried to install the combo update also but it doesn't solve the problem. When I check the Finder app in Core Services from my external drive it says Finder version 10.5.6. Is that the problem? I have replaced it with Finder 10.5.4 from my external drive but it doesn't help. Where is Finder 10.5.5???

The best thing for you to do is to create a bootable CD/DVD using CDMaker (with a template from the Internet) and use that with the off-line algorithms. That will work fine with your Leopard volume.
