JORY  I like this app a lot. I've been using it daily since I bought my Garmin Edge 705 and really like nearly everything about it.

The only thing I don't like is that the developer calls it "freeware" when it's really "nagware". The app is "free", but nags you to send a "donation" every time you launch it, requiring you to check a box in order to click the dismiss button. Each day you don't "donate", the time you must watch this nag increases by a second or two.

Honestly, I'd have bought this app three months ago if the developer was honest about it being nagware or shareware and seeking registrations, not "donations".

JORY  I love this app! I've been using it since it was called Metro and was still an alpha. I'm glad to see the app continued development and I plan on purchasing a license soon, as it is extraordinarily useful for online maps such as Google Maps & gulesider.no.

It's so simple it's almost embarrassing that no one has made something like it before.

JORY  Great utility app! I had an FLV file that was really just an embedded MP3 and iExtractMP3 was precisely the correct tool for extracting the MP3 without question.

SoundApp Reborn
Feb 19 2007

JORY  Yay! Although it doesn't have the conversion functionality, it's got all the features I love about SoundApp (which I *still* use on my OS9-based Pro Tools rig).

Thanks for bringing us up to OS X!

Adobe Soundbooth CS4
Oct 26 2006

JORY  A nice first-try effort. The UI is better than most 2-trk editors I've seen. I'm sure there will be more features added and it will be come useful at some point.

At the moment, it doesn't do a ton, but the app does exhibit some nice ideas. I especially like the editing paradigm of dragging tabs from the left or right to trim the file, the fades being dragged, and the method of adjusting gain on any selection.

The spectral editing is pretty damn cool, too, and I hope more detail and ability is added to that. It could be incredibly useful for dialog editing & clean-up on films.

Keep going, Adobe!!!

QuickBooks Pro 2009
Oct 25 2006
****.

JORY  Previously, I have been totally satisfied with QuickBooks, but I must admit the 2007 version is a bit less impressive than the previous versions. There are some ridiculous bugs, such as filtering in reports returns the information on the wrong filter term.

There are some good new features, though. The new Layout Designer is great, since ugly invoices that don't allow for much customization was a real problem in previous versions. Unfortunately, there's now a problem with wrapping text that extends past a column's line in an invoice.

The Universal Binary was a welcome update, as I've gotten quite tired of constantly rebooting my MBP in order to run QuickBooks and Quicken. (Too bad I still have to do that for Quicken.)

There are still some major usability issues, though, such as contextual menus that don't contain useful options.

smcFanControl

JORY  FAN-smegging-tastic! I was just playing a game that used up 80-100% of the CPU and brought the operating temp to 169°F. I tried smcFanControl, asking it to move the fans to 4000 rpm each on my MBP, and the temperature cooled to 117°F (normal operating temp) in under a minute.

Thanks for the software!

How did you set yours up?

QuickBooks Pro 2009
Aug 29 2006
****½

JORY  I hear a lot of people bitch about QuickBooks Pro on the Mac. Personally, I find it to be awesome. For the purposes of running my business, the app works beautifully and provides about 85% of the functionality I require. In fact, it tends to offer more functionality than I require, but I grow into the rest as I get better at running my business and understanding the ledger that keeps it going.

QB 2006 is a great improvement over the previous two versions, as it behaves more like a Mac application with each major revision.

That said, there are still some things that aren't terribly useful (such as useless contextual menus that _could_ contain useful functionality).

I'm happy to be using QuickBooks and highly recommend it to business owners.

Incidentally, one feature I'd like to see added is the ability to backup to a personal server, rather than just to .Mac, which requires I spend $100/yr for a service I don't want or need.

FontExplorer X Pro
Feb 11 2006
*****

JORY  I'm impressed. And I'm not easily impressed by software.

After years of putting up with the incredibly inferior font managers on the market, Linotype has done the seemingly impossible: they have released a font manager that WORKS!

To my work methods, the holy grail of font management is something as simple as the old Adobe Type Manager Deluxe, but within OS X.

My experience with font managers under OS X is that they are incredibly slow, difficult to use, and use far too much CPU.

For example, the new Suitcase Fusion requires a minimum of a 1 GHz G4 processor. Why does a font manager require such hefty requirements?

I'm happy to say that Font Explorer does not triple my CPU usage for every application on my 1 GHz PowerBook G4. Nor does it require 10 minutes to start up (like Suitcase X1 or Font Reserve). Nor does it require that I work by _its_ methods (like FontAgent).

Every designer I know is switching over to Font Explorer. And it's FREE, to boot!

I highly recommend Font Explorer!

GyazMail
Jan 17 2005
*****

JORY  I've been working with GyazMail for nearly 2 years now and I'm extremely happy with it. There are only two issues I have with it: lack of decent searching capabilities and slight speed hit for a large database of saved mail.

The developer is somewhat responsive, although he doesn't respond much to feature suggestions.

Bug-wise, I've had good response from the developer. I really don't notice any bugs in day-to-day use.

I certainly am glad that I purchased GyazMail, and promote it to people whenever I can.

I am hoping that it will gain decent search capabilities when Spotlight is enabled in 10.4.

**½..

JORY  After reading the reviews here, I decided to try it out. However, as soon as the app creates its Data folder, it becomes intensely unstable. In fact, I couldn't get past the shareware nag at the program start. It keeps crashing to the desktop.

I thought I'd take a look at the prefs files it created and was shocked to see that they were:

1) stored in the application's folder

2) flat file databases (not XML)

The app, for the few seconds I got to see it, looks nice, but has some drawbacks to its interface design:

1) Pulling directly from the Apple Address Book is great, but doing it from a pop-up menu is useless. The app should let you type the name and fill in with its best guess as to the existing entry.

2) When adding a new billing category ($/hr), it took me several tries to figure out how to type in a number, as the field would replace what I typed with it's original guess, since it put the "/hr" in the field while I was typing.

3) When adding a new billing category, it should allow you to type the name of the category right away, without further mousing or clicking. If you have a large number of categories, having to click "+", then double-click the category name, then select the template text before entering the name, is a lot of unnecessary work!

All-in-all, I think this program has some nice ideas, but needs refinement.

PERRY FJELLMAN  The crashing bug has been fixed. It was due to an Address Book error in Apple's core access routine that we were using. We've since removed Address Book integration until the bug is sorted out, and we can refine how it is integrated, as per your comments.

CleanUp smb mess

JORY  Great little AppleScript!

Yes, it could be a dangerous thing to use, but I wanted to delete all the .DS_Store and ._xxxx files that got created when I dropped MP3 files onto my Jukebox via an SMB share. MP3 files have no resource fork, so it was safe.

I do wish I had an idea that it was working, but I did have it sort through 80 GB of MP3s, all in nested directory structures, and it completed in just a couple minutes!
