ShapeShifter | May 17 2004 |
JEFF Shapeshifter does nice looking things to your system but be prepared for wierdness. I have a relatively fast G4: Macintosh G4 Gigabit/Ethernet, OS X 10.2.8 & 10.3.3, Powerlogix 1.4 GHZ Dual Processor upgrade, 1.5 GB RAM, and Shapeshifter IMMEDIATELY started making my system act up. I don't know why I even installed it...got a bug up my bumbly or something. I (should) know better...I like to run and EXTREMELY lean OS and anytime you install enhancment crap you're absolutely going to sacrifice performance. That's not saying that everyone will experience problems...I run some heavy duty music/MIDI programs and Final Cut Pro in 10.2.8 and web authoring programs in 10.3.3. If you aren't doing anything crazy you might be okay, but if you start to experience problems as you install more stuff Shapeshifter may be the culprit. (Version 1.2)

JEFF HOOGMOED very, VERY vague manual...more like a hint of what you might do instead of a clear, indepth, step-by-step instruction. The app seems very nice but everything is very unclear. The online manual asks you to click buttons and open windows that are not there in the app (or if they are there are wrongly named). Way too high of a price to pay for software that I have to figure out for myself. I wouldn't rate this because I don't want to trash a nice piece of software(?) when it may be me that's being a bit thick, but... (Version 6.7)

JEFF HOOGMOED I use DVD Imager... http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11677 Create an image from the VIDEO_TS file (after using something like DVD2ONE thus reducing the file to fit on a 4.7), insert and burn image. Using Toast is okay but I've found that most times it takes a file that is well below the 4.7 limit and adds useless files like DS.STORE files (I think they're system cache files but I may be wrong) and puts them in the file(s) to be burned thus making them too large for the disk. My method works every time 4 me. hope this was helpful (Version 0.5b2)

I ripped a small DVD (UNDER 5 gb) in under 2 hours with a G4 1.4 GHZ DP (Powerlogix CPU), 1.5 GB RAM. MATT In reasponse to this one, I recently fixed a problem that I had had since 10.2.6 (now running 10.3.3) where safari would crash the second i tried to load a page and for some reason I did not have my system wide font panel. i cleared out all of my fonts folder and renamed the ones that weren't duplicates and all of a sudden Safari worked and my font panel was restored. My point is a stupid font file caused all my problems so your situation could be caused by something equally trivial. (Version 1.2.1)

JEFF I have most of the usual utilities, Norton, Tech Tool 4, Drive 10, and they all do a pretty good job. But when my computer starts acting really weird, like "clean install" weird, Diskwarrior has always fixed it (so far, knock on wood). I do a TON of really demanding stuff on my G4...video editing, I'm a musician so all kinds of midi apps/editing/mixing, I do graphics and websites for a living so Photoshop and Dreamweaver, plus the occasional game, and I think all that demanding software can either cause problems via use or conflicts. After a few months with no problems it starts acting up, but Diskwarrior has fixed it up every time. (Version 3.0.1)

I think I solved the problem (the one I was having anyway). When I was running it on my iMac the install went okay...yes, the framerate was only 23 fps but that I knew BEFORE I bought the thing. But when I would go to install it (the original MYTVXTC that came with...)on my G4 there were refresh problems galor. I did a last-ditch install rebooted as the root just to see and it was fine! Don't know how helpful this will be. Can't expect much out of this thing...I paid less than $70. It's not the $399 firewire EyeTV. (Version 2.2.1b1)

Norton AntiVirus | Jan 28 2004 |
JEFF Norton has ALWAYS been terrible running software,it conflicts with EVERYTHING! Not to say that their emergancy boot disk isn't an essential utility to have, but their anti-virus and firewall ALWAYS causes problems. First of all you have a Mac...WE DON'T GET VIRUSES! Don't by into the hype that you need anti-virus software (that's bloated and will conflict with EVERYTHING!) and a third-party firewall. There's a great firewall already built in OS X, and it works fine. For the truly paranoid, buy a router with a hardware firewall (Belkin, under $50) and you'll be totally invisible to the net (I'm truly paranoid and I have one! LOL!). I guess you can apply this review to any other firewal or anti-virus program. You just don't need them... (Version 9.0.1)

ANONYMOUS I concur with your opinion about Symantec software on OSX, however our smugness about the security of OSX has painted a bullseye on OSX computers and the first native trojan horse program for OSX has been discovered in a .mp3 file (See Intego website). Clone X | Jan 19 2004 |
JEFF I continue to write comments as I use this apps different features. I attempted (a couple of times) to clone my system to CDs. Spent a few hours doing this until I got to disk #6 and there was an error ejecting the disk that was being written thus rendering the entire cloning process unusable. Big waste of time. Bunch of coasters! Also tried restoring my system from a Clone a while ago and it reported errors. This happened a few times...more times than it actually worked. Clone X did bail me out twice but it left me hanging many more times than it helped. I've learned my lesson(s) and I've vowed to keep my system running VERY lean and not to run little "enhancers" and slockey junk (not calling Clone X junk). (Version 1.1)

JEFF Themes and good ol' Kaleidoscope are a great thing...I get bored looking at the same old desktop too, but anytime I've messed with an appearance app I've very shortly after the install/alteration ran into problems that resulted in an OS reinstall. Not saying that this will happen to all or even a few but these have been my experiences. I run pretty heavy MIDI and graphics apps (graphics for work, MIDI/music for hobby),on my G4 and iMacs and thanks to OS X they both play well together (I spent much of my time "troubleshooting" and reinstalling things in OS 7,8 & 9). And now that everything is stable I'm not going to risk a rock-solid OS over a theme. I'm sure this app is a good one but I like performance over appearance any day.
