JBMELBY  An excellent plugin! I've been using it ever since it was first released. The developer is very responsive, and the support is terrific.

JBMELBY  It's unfortunate, because I've used Xupport for years and have found it to be one of my most valuable utilities -- but it's been almost impossible for me to find out when, or even if, there will be a Snow Leopard-compatible version. No one at Applicorn ever seems to answer e-mail, and I never hear about updates until I receive a note that one is available. I sincerely hope that a version for 10.6 will come out soon, but in any event, Applicorn's business model obviously leaves a great deal to be desired. It's almost as though they don't care if they have any customers or not -- and maybe they don't.

MATHEW  Same with me. 1.3.8b is useless. Going back to previous version.

MONKEYJUNKEY  Same here. This is really crap. How can you not test a version on a single up-to-date system as a developer? And if you look further below, the last release wasn't stable either.

I know, this is freeware, but even as a developer for freeware you should have a certain standard of testing a release. Really!

Toast Titanium

JBMELBY  Well, now it appears from an e-mail that I just received that Roxio is going to let previous users upgrade for $69.99 — all of ten dollars less than those who're buying the app for full price (after the mail-in rebate). Not much of a bargain, it seems to me.

D9  Actually, new licenses cost $100 and upgrades cost $80. Roxio is also sending out a "special" customer upgrade for $70.

Still, it remains to be seen whether the new features justify the cost. Personally, I have no need for the TiVoToGo burning. The BluRay burning will be nice, but again, I won't have a need for this until late this year, perhaps.

Version 7 is fast and feature-filled for me. I'm likely not to upgrade regardless of the features.

JBMELBY  The alleged "upgrade price" ($79.99 after a $20 mail-in rebate) is the same as the price for new users. This is absurd, and an insult to those of us who've been supporting Toast since v 4 or earlier. Roxio should be ashamed!

JBMELBY  A new version has been posted to eliminate installer problems. The installation method has been changed to manual installation. If you have successfully installed v 4.4 using the installer, you do not need to download this version.

JBMELBY  Please note: Back up user prefs 4.3.3 is not currently Tiger-compatible. Although I have officially ceased development on this application, because of popular demand I shall release a Tiger-compatible version in the near future. Please check this page for notification of a new version.

JBMELBY  Beginning with v 4.2.5, it is no longer the case that "Back up user prefs" will run only on an administrator account (although an administrator account is still required to run "BUUP4.2.2_for_cron").

DiskWarrior

*****

JBMELBY  I downloaded Disk Warrior 3 this morning (it is available as a download, if you're willing to pay the full price, and although I've ordered the upgrade for $39, I decided that I could use an extra copy) and used it to repair a particularly nasty corruption problem. What a surprise! DW 2 used to take two or three hours --or even more, depending upon the degree of damage--to repair and replace a badly corrupted directory; DW3 does it in MINUTES--and not a lot of minutes either--say, three or four! My advice is to run, not walk, to the nearest computer and get your hands on a copy of this utility. It's every bit as good as DW 2, and then some! I wish I could give it ten stars.

CharView
Oct 1 2002
*****

JBMELBY  I'm a long-time user of PopChar Pro, which performs tasks similar to those in CharView--but IMHO CharView does more than PopChar and does it better. I have held off retiring PopChar Pro, however, because CharView has placed an icon in the dock when the application is running, thereby cutting down the available dock real estate. Hacking the application to remove the dock icon is a simple but annoying procedure. But now, with v 2.2, CharView allows the user the option of either having the icon appear in the dock or not (an option, BTW, that I wish were offered by many other applications as well). With this change, CharView has replaced PopChar Pro on my machine. I recommend it most highly!
