JAMESKITTY  Snow Leopard introduced OpenCL (GPU Processing) and GrandCentral (dynamic threading to optimize for multiple processors/cores). Both are quite stable and effective. But both require you use Xcode's compilers.

Adobe -- and several other software vendors -- develop for non-mac platforms first and then port that code to macintosh using non-Xcode tools. The resulting programs can't utilize the advanced OS features and often suffer performance wise because of it.

It's not great for mac consumers, but the bean-counters at the top of the pile still see the number of non-mac users in one pile as being much higher, and believe they should be developing (and testing) for that pile first.

JAMESKITTY  I'll grant that the majority of users will never need, nor know what to do with this application; however, those of us that work with wireless networks daily or have to troubleshoot connection problems in congested areas need a little more than the Airport menu provides.

If you don't need this app, don't d/l use it. But please don't hate on it for just that reason. It's quite necessary (and works damned well!) for the rest of us.

StuffIt Expander 2010
Sep 18 2008

JAMESKITTY  Okay, with much laborious clicking around, I found that the changes for this version of Stuffit are:

COMPRESS AND EXPAND

NEW! Duplicate Folding = smaller archives

NEW! Expand 7-Zip archives

NEW! Expand segmented Zip archives

BACKUP

NEW! Preview archives within TimeMachine

INTEGRATION

NEW! Peer in archives with Quick Look plugin

NEW! Browse archives in the Finder like disks

Assuming "Peer" is supposed to be "Peek", QL & Finder Preview integration could be useful (no idea tho if this is deluxe only feature or if it comes with the expander alone).

But seriously... how many people create stuffit archives (!) that have enough redundant files within them to make a difference with duplicate folding?

I've never heard of 7-zip archives, and have yet to encounter segmented zip archives... but I suspect I could find freeware solutions to either if it were an issue.

Amazing how they can churn out a new version every two months and somehow think they've got a new product.

The backup and integration features you mention are only available with Deluxe.

JAMESKITTY  I am loving the addition of presets, but unfortunately the bug that made Mediafork unusable exists in this new build of handbrake as well... namely that the audio drops a couple of minutes into *some* cds.

I just ripped Face/Off twice with the same results: the H264 encoding slows wayyyyy down (from ~27fps on my system to ~7fps) and the audio stops 23 minutes into the file.

Thankfully, I kept 0.7.1 archived on my system.

PEN_SQ  I think it's just a matter of what you look at. SMART is pretty good at reporting how heavily it's eating into the spare block count, and once the first regular block is finally broken, the disk is done. Smart may not report the disk as totally No Good until the spindle is finally snapped, but I'm shopping for a new drive the moment the spare count drops. I wish/hope this program does the same.

JAMESKITTY  Crashed within 2 minutes of installing on my MacBook C2D.

Further, I don't like the interface at all. And customization of it seems entirely non-existant. Further, its just loading webpages inside it's embedded browser. and those pages are rather ugly by today's standards as well.

Further still, they're a bit misleading on the whole "myspace" integration, or any other kind of integration as far as i can tell. you may actually be able to use it as a chat application for other networks, but i couldn't find where with that ugly and confusing web 0.5 interface, and frankly it crashed when i was just clicking around, so why should i care -- let alone trust it to replace adium or ichat?

and finally.... there's no upfront indication of their revenue model here. they say they're anti-spyware, anti-adware and that it's free, but how are they making their money? everyone needs to make money to stay in business, and the ones that don't tell you how are usually doing it in ways you don't like.

oh and guys.... um subdomain names of "dude" and "meth" are not confidence instilling. if these are the things you're thinking of at work, i don't want to give you permissions or my passwords... oh shit. now i have to go in and change my msn, yahoo and gmail passwords. dammit.

Smart Crash Reports

JAMESKITTY  you are ASSUMING that SCR isn't crashing safari. but with SCR, crash. Remove SCR... no more crashes!

maybe it's not directly conflicting with safari, maybe it's safari calling a third-party plug-in that SCR conflicts with... who knows. who cares. that's precisely the reason I try to keep this hack crap off my system, it puts me in an untested state where NO ONE knows what will happen.

Version 1.0.2 installed with NO user notification, and everytime I launched my purchased program, it reinstalled itself (and believe me I reamed the developer of the software I purchased for that). The only way i could keep it from reinstalling was to create the parent folder with the same name, and deny myself permissions to it.

AND, i read crash reports fairly thoroughly. Kind of a compulsive job hazzard. Which is the only way I knew this POC was there in the first place... in the active tasks list. I saw nothing that indicated to me that the report was going anywhere other than Apple. And if I can't see it, how the hell is an average user going to see it....

so, let's review:

1. third party developers can install this software without user permission or notification, and can repeatedly reinstall this software without user permission or notification.

2. any notification of it's presence, or the forwarding of data to a third party source is so hidden that a very experienced technician can't find it.

It's a trojan, and a privacy violation all in one!

Just like the other crap from Unsanity, it works great on the OS when they release it, but then Apple changes something and it causes all sorts of problems. Not apple's fault if you are using unpublished APIs, kids.

Developers, please don't bundle this crap with your applications. It's a true disservice to your users.

ROSYNA  A few notes about your review. SCR isn't causing Safari to crash, it's appearing because Safari crashed. That's why SCR was created, to report crashes to the developer that isn't Apple.

I'm not sure why you claim it is spyware or sending hidden data. SCR tells you explicitly the name of the developer the report is being sent to and lets you see all data that is being sent, allowing you to choose not to send it. This is because it's actually what Apple's crash reporter is doing.

And if you try to use the application uploader.... well it probably won't work and you won't be able to shut down your computer afterwards. And there's still no way to reset the system software.

Blackberry support is some of the worst in the business. Doesn't matter what you ask them, they'll find a third party to refer you to. And pocketmac... well despite what they claim, they don't even seem to be answering emails anymore (been well over a week with no response to my initial request).

JAMESKITTY  so what you are saying is that USERS don't have useful feedback for your application and/or processes, only other DEVELOPERS do.

You might want to consider the difference between developer-centric application development and user-centric application development.

Maybe then you might understand how serious of a problem you're lack of interface design is.

And for the record, I've did QA & escalation support for the top PROFESSIONAL software development companies on the mac platform for nearly ten years. As a now freelance consultant, your application could potentially be of use to me in billing clients; however, with it's current interface it's all but unusable so I'm sticking with Accounts, instead.

JAMESKITTY  pretty, but pretty functionless. you enter something into the search box then it sends you to the myspace search page. woohoo, it's like a little blue bookmark for myspace's search page.

what would really be helpful is if it could process the results. myspace's search is fairly crippled, but if you had a widget that did multiple searches and then cross referenced the results for you...

for example, i am looking for my friend danielle, who is 30-35, living in portland, female and 5'6". you can't search by those criteria in myspace's current search engines, but if you had a program that captured myspaces results from the two separate searches (search for people named danielle, X miles from a portland zip & a second search to display all women in portland between the ages of 30-35 that are 5'6") and compared them to show only the results that showed up in both sections... THAT would be useful.

but then, if you can send search queries to myspace... is it accepting outside POST requests? assuming that both searches above both query the same database, could you build custom queries that bypass their fucked up search logic criteria in the first place? maybe send ONE query with all the criteria listed above?

either way. should display the search results inside the widget.

JAMESKITTY  you know, being that their posting a .01 build every other day, you have to wonder if they are doing any testing at all.

personally, i'd much rather download a STABLE application once and have it work. i could understand major patches being rushed out, but series of small fixes should be rolled into one build that can be adequately tested.

if you are going to charge professional development prices, you need to meet professional development standards.

HandBrake
Aug 9 2006
****.

JAMESKITTY  handbrake is wonderful, but it needs improvement in 3 areas:

1. h264 is a third as fast as mpeg-4. i realize this is probably codec related, but seriously, i get ~65 fps with mpeg-4, and ~22 fps with h264.

2. metadata input. can't we have some sort of AtomicParsley ui built in? it's so 20th century to have to rip, then tag in a separate application.

3. universal preferences. i hate having to set the same settings over and over. i want to set my defaults and have them applied unless *i* change them.

and why a LITE version now? do you really have that much time on your hands that you needed to create a second version? why not just a preset?

Here's a sample of what FinderPop can do, jameskitty...

...with a simple, single click in the menu bar - no modifier keys required and it's "sticky" too! - I have instant access to ALL my stuff. (Just toss aliases to whatever you want into the "FinderPop Items" folder.)

Extremely Cool.

iSyncIt
Jul 10 2006

JAMESKITTY  if i understand it, this puts an icon in the doc that will:

1. turn bluetooth on

2. launch isync and start the sync

3. close isync once the sync is done

4. turn bluetooth off

??

seems like a lot of trouble to go through to make this into an application, since bluetooth already lives in my menubar with off/on functionality, and isync is in my dock.

but hey, if you had fun doing it....

DIGITAL.PARDOE  Hi, thanks for the feedback.

The application now lives in the menu bar and in it's current version (0.5) can now serve as a replacement for the bluetooth menu item.

Essentaily its purpose is to replace the missing functionality of the iSync menu bar item that does not sync devices when you click it, just dotMac

It started out as something to make my life easier, I only had to click one thing and it would do all of the bluetooth and syncing stuff for me, I could click and go back to what I was doing.

Now it has also become a port for me to learn objective-C and Cocoa. The AppleScript has been essentially stripped out completely in 0.5 whereas in 0.1 it was an AppleScript application written in script editor. I wouldn't say fun, but a learning curve.

JAMESKITTY  gosh thanks adobe for this experimental player, with no real indication as to what's new. so it's like a player for a application platform that doesn't, like, exist yet? and heck for kicks, it still doesn't even run on the very real intel platform that DOES.

cool.

Chat Acronyms Widget
May 30 2006
*....

JAMESKITTY  This widget is useless even by widget standards. It has no internal database, you type in a search string and it hurls to a browser to search a website.

and the website doesn't know "woot" ( http://www.sharpened.net/glossary/acronym.php?WOOT ).

and i doubt apple would be pleased with their unauthorized use of the iChat icon.

So let's review:

1. Functionless

2. Incomplete

3. Stolen

awesome!

JAMESKITTY  Seems to lack the ability to add a calendar to the list to be uploaded.... could this be a 10.4.x compatibility issue?

I guess it's a bad sign when the product isn't even listed on the developer's website. The price is a bit steep, as well.

WhatSize
Mar 29 2006

JAMESKITTY  well any utility isn't going to be able to report the sizes of files you don't have permission to view...

BUT, if you boot off an external drive, set the internal drive to "ignore permissions" (do a get info, it's a check box at the bottom), then it *should* report all the sizes.

JAMESKITTY  If they've really fixed switching tabs within the message window i'll be a lot happier with Metal Adium (this bug didn't exist in the main adium).

But I still don't understand why this is a separate dev project. Couldn't you accomplish the same thing with a theme for adium?

seems like a waste of dev resources

MBHOCKEY  It's not a waste of dev resources because we're not actual Adium devs :) It's a friendly fork off the official adium project.

The main devs don't want to incorporate this into Adium because it would take a lot to do it right, and they have a lot on their plate (as always) with such a big project. _That_ would be a waste of dev resources.

my mail server recognizes port 26 as well as port 25. port 587 is also popular. ISP send mail blocking is usually nothing any more sophisticated than just blocking port 25.
