SAGE
Nov 20 2009

ILIKETRASH  The best thing about SAGE is that there now a $300 version of Mathematica for personal use. ($249 before Christmas, 2009.) I'm really rooting for this software and I tried it in the past but it is plagued by the common open source problem: poor documentation. Also, the interface is clumsy (but what math program doesn't have a clumsy interface--Mathematica's interface was cool in 1987 but it's still pretty much the same). I tried to learn how to do basic stuff using some of the tutorials and manuals but was quickly knee-deep in research mathematics examples. Not good. How many ways are there to make plots? And _every_ math program is deficient unless it uses a mouse-based interface like LiveMath Maker (formerly Theorist) which is still available works after all these years.

ILIKETRASH  Their web site SCREAMS Windows, and sure enough, there is a Windows version.

Challenge: Name _one_ program that has a Windows version that doesn't stink on OS X. OK, Skype. But name one more.

Hulu Desktop

***..

ILIKETRASH  One of the fun things about Hulu Desktop is you can't watch all of the videos that are on hulu.com. For example, Hulu Desktop will not show Action! but your web browser will. Way cool.

Wacom Pen Tablet Driver

ILIKETRASH  Based on my experience and the comments on this page, it looks like Wacom is officially in the crapware category. Buggy software and nobody at the company is doing anything about it.

Camino

ILIKETRASH  Nobody, but nobody, gets thumbnail tabs right except for OmniWeb. Put them in a scrollable drawer to one side (not top or bottom) which are visible by default. If you don't want to see them, close the drawer. If you want to re-order them, drag the thumbnails. If you don't like the size, change the width of the drawer. In Camino 2.0 (and, well, "others,"), you have to hit a special key to see thumbnails, and then the entire window is taken over by them. They should be visible as "thumbnails" all the time so that you can see what tab you want to view next. What other purpose could there be?

And I see that Camino 2.0 still has jerky scrolling, but not as bad as Firefox. Would it kill someone to make the smallest scroll increment be one pixel?

ILIKETRASH  "[Improved] removed import support for AC3 files"

How is _removing_ the ability to support AC3 files an improvement? This must be either a typo or a really bad decision by the developers.

Can someone explain this?

MATTHEW FOUST  AC3 support was removed due to licensing issues. It will be added back in a future release. The removal of this feature is actually listed in the "Remaining bugs and missing features" category.

ILIKETRASH  This has been a damn fine piece of software and I'm sorry to read that it is abandoned.

Since it is abandoned, the developer has a moral obligation to stop selling it.

ILIKETRASH  There is now a binary for OS X (see earlier comment). However, this program doesn't seem to recognize old-school Macintosh line endings, ASCII 13. I sent a note to the developer about this.

ILIKETRASH  What is so great about this? There are no options to set bit depth or sampling rate on most of the formats where that makes sense. Also, there is no option to set floating point where that makes sense, and there is no raw floating point format at all.
