IINDIGO  As a long-time Mac user (since 1996) that has written a little bit of software himself, I will have to agree that within the OS X software ecosystem, there are far too many small, single-function applications that are being charged for, especially considering how very similar equivalents on other platforms are either free or donationware.

Firefox
Jun 26 2009

IINDIGO  The menu items that seem affected by the problem are those that reside in contextual menus yielded by right-clicking anything in a page. Also, while it's difficult to notice, the same contextual menus make use of Tiger-style menu dividers instead of the simpler Leopard ones.

As for my machine, I'm currently using a 20" 2.1Ghz iMac G5.

I'll just continue to use OmniWeb since it provides most of the extra niceties that Firefox addons give (adblocking, per-page preferences and stylesheets mainly) while still feeling completely native.

Firefox

IINDIGO  There are still a few UI inconsistencies (for example, selected menu items don't blink like normal Mac ones do - you click the item, the menu disappears) and I don't know if it's like this on an intel machine, but on my PPC iMac, 3.5 still has that "clunky" feeling where UI elements lag a second before redrawing. This causes it to still feel distinctly non-native.

Unfortunately, I don't believe this problem can be resolved unless Firefox does a Camino-style shedding of its XUL-powered UI.

OmniWeb
Mar 29 2009

IINDIGO  I've been using the latest SneakyPeek build for a while now, and I gotta say, it's doing very nicely. I can't even really tell it's a beta.

One feature of OmniWeb that I've really come to love is the ability to apply custom stylesheets on individual pages - it gives me the power of the Firefox plugin "Stylish" without the nasty clunkiness and un-Maclike/"I'm faking it" feel that comes with Firefox.

Overall, the browser is great and I can't wait to see what version 6 holds in store.

Path Finder
Feb 6 2009

IINDIGO  My main beef with this program is its interface. It just feels far too cluttered and crowded, even if it really isn't that way; there are also a number of UI elements that look and act in a way that is unorthodox and are not quite Maclike.

Also, as mentioned by previous reviewers, it's a bit on the slow side. If one is expected to replace the Finder with this, I think it'd be expected that it be --at least-- as fast as the Finder currently is, preferably faster.

Pixelmator
Dec 21 2008
***..

IINDIGO  While I agree with the previous reviewer that Adobe Photoshop needs some competition, this is not it.

Ignoring missing features between the two, Pixelmator's UI is a mess thanks to its widespread use of HUD windows. Yeah, it looks nice and pretty when it's sitting on nothing but a blank desktop, but once you start multitasking and have other windows sitting behind it, its usability plummets astoundingly fast.

Also, while this may have changed, when I tried it several months ago it felt rather sluggish in comparison to Photoshop.

In conclusion, I find that Pixelmator is limited to novice/amateur use in dressing up their photos and such. It's not a tool for professionals or even intermediate hobbyists - for those purposes, even the open-source GIMP would fare better.

uTorrent
Dec 18 2008
**...

IINDIGO  The UI for the Mac port of uTorrent is a mess, and if some of the threads on their Mac design boards are any indication, the developers are entirely too firm-footed on keeping the design as it is. They are against a large number of suggested changes to make it more Mac-like. It's as if they --want-- uTorrent Mac to remain looking like a sloppy Windows port or a crappy Java app.

It may be the best torrent client in the world as far as capabilities go, but if its developers aren't willing to put more effort in it, I won't use it. Transmission will remain my client of choice.

Interface Kit
Mar 14 2008

IINDIGO  Costs far too much to add what is free and standard in Cocoa to RB. Might be worth $15, at most.

Interface Kit

RADDLE  I think people will accept a cost to add these (because RealBasic comes with an ease-of-use that Cocoa/Xcode doesn't have...) but yes, a hundred and fifty bucks really is beyond ambitious!

At 20, you'd have a customer. Maybe even 30. But 150 is more likely to have people wearily reaching for an Xcode beginner's manual instead...

Gimp
Sep 30 2007

IINDIGO  Gimp disappoints me. It really does have a lot of potential, but unfortunately due to its X11-based GUI, it's unintuitive and incredibly ugly - the best way of describing it is that someone tied Gimp to the back of the ugly truck with an ugly rope and dragged it ugly street for 10 ugly miles.

Being an open source project isn't enough of an excuse for it being that way. The likes of Firefox, Camino, and Adium have proven that quite well.

IINDIGO  This music player isn't very usable at this point. It's heavy, has an ugly interface, feels flakey, and is lacking features.

It may be decent in the future, after more work has been put into it, but for now I'll be sticking with iTunes.

Opera
Dec 18 2006

IINDIGO  If the Opera team were to learn how to make their browser have a proper Mac GUI and move the tabs UNDER the buttonbar, it would be a nice browser. Until then though, its terrible design will keep me away from using it.
