ICONZ113 Evernote has been very useful to me. I use it to capture information including snippets of text from websites, bookmarks, emails, pictures, create notes, I also utilize the OCR technology that is implemented when notes are synced, this comes in handy when doing research for school assignments. One thing I don't use it for, is file organization. All of my documents I keep organized with folders. One reason I don't keep all my documents in EN is because I'm concerned about having certain documents online, also Evernote's ability to export to the format the file was when it was imported can sometimes be difficult or tricky. I feel I have more control when organizing my files and documents manually. I think of evernote as an "everything else" organizer. Other then that I think EN is a great application. Another plus is its ability to keep all your notes synced with all your computers and the iphone client is pretty cool too. The only issue I have with Evernote is the EN helper thats added to login items every time you start the application. When I manually remove the helper from login items it adds itself the next time the application is started. Not that big of a deal I just like keeping login items to a minimum. Evernote also features a web clipper browser plugin, making it easier to clip and save information while browsing. (Version 1.5.2)

ICONZ113 Transmission is a torrent client, limewire is a p2p client. I usually use a p2p client for single songs, and transmission for albums. I usually cant find the single song I want on torrent sites but I can usually find the whole album. I figure just get the songs I want so not to clutter my itunes with a bunch of stuff I don't listen to (Version 5.4.0)

STIKE Yep MANAGES your documents, helps you organize them. It is used on a limited set of files that you tag and put into order. Leap FINDS documents of all kinds, no matter where they are. Even system files, on various drives, no matter if tagged, managed or not, it finds what you are looking for. (Version 2.0.3)

ICONZ113 this product looks pretty good, does the app import documents? or does it tag your documents and reference their locations? (Version 2.0.3)

Yep | Nov 5 2009 |
STIKE Basically you can do three things: Import documents, either by placing them in the app or in folders that are being "watched" by Yep. Those files will be imported automatically. It also has an integrated scanning option, check compatibility with your scanner first though. Then you can tag the documents, give them ratings, sort by various views, search by content (aka Spotlight) which also searches the comment section of the file within Yep. Finally you can drag/drop export the files anywhere, eMail them or file them within Yep's "Filed Documents" folder (which creates a subfolder structure kinda like iTunes sorted by year, month, day on which the file has been imported). So yeah, it manages a certain amount of files that you specify. Description good enough? Did I forget something? :-D (Version 2.0.3)

Evernote | Nov 4 2009 |
ICONZ113 Another thing would be being able to remove EN from the startup items. After you manually remove EN from startup items, once you activate the app, it adds itself to start up list again. I try to keep the things that startup when I log in to a minimum, I already have other things starting up and if I don't need the helper running anyway, why not let me remove it. How about implementing that into a future release? The only thing that bugs me. (Version 1.5.2)

OmniFocus | Oct 22 2009 |
ICONZ113 I've had a chance to use Omnifocus more extensively and this application has far exceeded my expectations. This type of application needs a more thorough analysis before its compared because there are so many features that aren't evident at the start. Thats why first impressions don't really hold weight to me when I read reviews or comparisons with this app. Omnifocus by far is the best task management, todo, application on OSX. Nothing even comes close. If your trying it out and have just tested it for a day, and you already like it, your going to be blown away by the features, functionality, and flexibility. 5 stars. First impressions always lead to the better looking application, but for the people that are serious about getting things done, Omnifocus is the way to go. (Version 1.7.4)

ICONZ113 I also Just ditched devonthink because I was realizing it was adding steps to my workflow and using up more time, when the reason I started using it was to save time and be more organized. Im now just using hierarchal folder structure inside my idisk, and I just keep my idisk synced so I can drop docs in and not have to sit there and wait for upload, I can just go on with my work while idisk syncs. This is what pushed me over the line to leave devonthink. I tried placing my databases into the idisk, and tried opening them from there, and it worked for a little bit but I was advised by the forum not to do that. SO in the end Im back where I started with folders, Ive tried together, evernote, devonthink. I think I might readopt evernote again , use that for notes and web pages and clippings, and just use the folders structure for my documents, until I find something that will hold all tyes of documents, allow me to export them easily, and allow me to import easily, I dont know though, I think Im going to focus on keeping documents organized in folders, tag my documents, and hope for the best, using default folder x, pathfinder, laucnhbar, and hazel for my folder and file organization. DiskWarrior | Oct 17 2009 |
ICONZ113 I see a lot of "which should I get" questions when it comes to diskwarrior and drive genius. Drive genius is a good application. I have purchased both drive genius and diskwarrior, in my opinion the 2 best. I only wanted to have one of them installed. After getting familiar with them I've decided to install drive genius and not diskwarrior. I did this because Drive genius can perform other tasks that are useful such as cloning drives, defraging, drive slimming, repartitioning, zero out data, perform verification tests, formatting, cloning, and a few other things. I felt I was better off having this installed over diskwarrior which only performs one function basically. However If my drive ever crapped out, I'm reaching for my disk warrior DVD first. So if you ask me which product is better at recovering your harddisk in a jam, my answer is diskwarrior. If you ask me which of the 2 Id rather have installed Im gonna say drive genius for the other things it can do. But when shiz hits the fan, Diskwarrior all the way. I like having the tool set drive genius offers available to me, if my boot drive crapped out having disk warrior installed wouldn't help me anyway, but when theres an emergency I'm reaching for the disk warrior. so if your looking for something that will bring your HD back from the dead get diskwarrior but if your interested in the large toolset drive genius offers then get DG. if you can only have one or the other get diskwarrior. ICONZ113 I was set on purchasing versions. So while I was making the purchase I was trying to take advantage of a coupon code that wasn't working, so I emailed them about it. While waiting, I decided to read up on versions and while doing so, came across Zennaware's Cornerstone. I decided to try it out, however I was still set on versions. After days of no response I decided to abandon and coupon code and just ask for an educational license, thinking it would speed along the process. I went ahead and sent my schools info in another email. After no response still, I decided to look more into Cornerstone. So I sent an email to Zennaware about Cornerstone educational license coupons, I received an email instantly with the coupon code. However I decided to still stick it out and wait for a response from the developer of versions. Even though both apps are great I was set on getting versions. I finally just received an email today responding to the first email I sent, they responded that they wanted to know the website I got the coupon code from, I responded 30 seconds later that I sent an email after that first initial email inquiring about education license coupons, and just wanted to get an educational license now, and again I'm waiting with no response. To me the companies lack of customer service reflects on the quality of service they can provide. If I ever had a problem in the future I can see the potential headaches when dealing with communicating with them, so I am going to go with Cornerstone. (Version 1.0.6)

ICONZ113 QS will never exceed what it was which is the unfortunate part. The people maintaining it are trying to keep it functioning as much as they can but it will never evolve like applications under active development. thats what I mean by dead. their trying to rekindle its functionality, that I understand . And they dont even have access to the source code and framework of all the plugins. So those plugins will never be reimplemented. When an app under development gets updated there are new features and upgrades. When open source QS gets updated its because they got a feature that used to work , working again. BLACKSMITH_TB I disagree completely. I know it's possible to have a Bad Experience™ when trying to upgrade to some of the newer betas from an old version (completely uninstalling, deleting prefs, etc. may be necessary). But there's no doubt that the new community-maintained builds are more stable, and have a much smaller memory footprint than the old versions. I've been using 1.0b56a7 since it came out at the beginning of the summer, on 10.5 and 10.6, with no problems whatsoever. (Version 1.0b56a7)

NONTROPPO Well, the fact that Quicksilver is the first and only launcher to get OpenMeta support shows you that QS still can provide new functionality the other alternatives can't! And for users of Things GTD app, plugin support works for QS, QSB and Launchbar, showing QS is still being actively supported by 3rd party developers. QS, even if it is not actively "enhanced", is still technically superior to all other alternatives, so even if QS doesn't move forwards, it will still take time for others to catch up. But moreover, some work *is* being done on the trunk branch, where alcor left a new triggers and plugin architecture for others to advance forward. I do think that QSB is getting a big shot of active and new development, but sadly the UI is uselessly constrained and it seems to be a management decision to make it that way - there are hundreds of votes in their bug system to add a third-pane ala QS and triggers but it is ignored... (Version 1.0b56a7)

Quicksilver | Oct 3 2009 |
GUILLAUMEK I think Iconz is wrong in calling the project "dead", though he makes a point in that QS has actually seen little evolution in the last years. Take a look at the changes committed to code: http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/source/list There is only one really dedicated dev, tiennou7, to whom obviously go our warm appreciation. Despite his hard work - check out the massive number of commits made this summer - the project has sometimes gone for months without any change to the code. This all said, I still believe that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'm fine with QS being just maintained. But to move forward, QS needs more devs. (Version 1.0b56a7)

LOOKIN2IT Please could you share with us the source of your crystal ball(s)? If one is not part of an open source project team, one can not state with certainty what that team has planned. That is bizarre: Why aren't you over at the Omnifocus page and gave it a good rating instead. It is perfectly okay if Things is not your thing. You might even use a comment to express an opinion like that. But when you write a review you should think about writing one or two arguments. This site and especially the rating system is supposed to be helpful to users who seek information about the pro and cons of an app. Your "review" wasn't helpful to other macupdate users. ICONZ113 Because of the 10.6 update I think launchbar is gonna get everyone coming over from quicksilver. Ive been using the app since the SL release and I have to say I like it alot, as a QS user you have to unlearn some old habits but after a little while it comes pretty easy. If you have just upgraded to SL and looking for a QS alternative, this is it. One small issue I have is the dock icon visible when the app is running, however there is an option to disable the dock icon but some functionality is lost when doing so, like dropping files or folder onto the launchbar icon to perform actions. Not that big of a deal considering I keep the dock hidden anyway. (Version 5.0rc4)

ICONZ113 these guys arent even developers, the purchase of this software was a business move, in the hopes of making a quick profit, they haven't done anything to improve the app or justify the cost. And now that they know it has incompatibilities instead of fixing it they add in code to tell the user its crashing for security reasons LMAO, u would think these guys would at least be good business men considering it looks like thats all their motivation. but there not even doing that part right. So text inside of photos is recognized and can be called upon by search. any pictures taken from ur iphone evernote app are synced to ur computers, ability to add selection, or add page from browser context menu to evernote. Dont get me wrong ypjimbo is a good app just saying evernote isnt bad, and gets updated regularly. DRDUL It depends on what scanner you're using, but in general, VueScan has an easier-to-use interface, offers additional features and produces better results, particularly if you enable all the advanced features. I started using VueScan years ago when I bought a film scanner. VueScan controlled the film scanner better than Nikon's software, it gave me more options to tweak the image to get a better scan, it enabled me to merge multiple scans and achieve greater bit depth, and I could save the raw scan data so I only had to scan a slide once. I have since sold the film scanner as I scanned all the slides I wanted to. I now only use VueScan on an occasional basis, when I want to get the best result from my Canon flatbed scanner. Most of the time all I need is a quick-and-dirty scan to email or archive something, and for that I use Canon's "one click" software because it's faster. (Version 8.5.23)

VueScan | Aug 11 2009 |
CHRISCHRAM I first started using Vuescan on a hand-me-down MicroTek scanner for which there was no available OS X driver. Nowadays I do most of my scanning on an HP all-in one. I usually use HP's own scanning software, which has a very simple user interface, but I know I can always fall back on Vuescan when HP can't do what I need. (Version 8.5.23)

VueScan | Aug 11 2009 |
JCRAIG I recently completed a digital imaging grant project for which I scanned close to 300 glass plate slides using an Epson 4990. Epson Scan doesn't come close to offering the amount of control I had over this project as does VueScan. It's simple to use, offers an efficient work-flow, and is extremely powerful. I'd gladly pay twice the cost, especially considering the excellent support provided by Ed Hamrick. I also use it with an old 1240U that was donated to our Historical Society museum. Scans are actually faster using Vuescan with this old scanner than with the included Epson software. VueScan is everything we love about great OSX software, and your scanner will perform to its fullest potential when driven by VueScan. (Version 8.5.23)

VueScan | Aug 12 2009 |
GLENN C MONTALBANO Some older scanners would be obsolete if not for Vue Scan. I have an HP 4C scanner that is still in excellent condition. I would no longer be able to use it without Vue Scan. (Version 8.5.23)

VueScan | Aug 21 2009 |
BILLJACOBS1 I bought a Nikon Coolscan 3 back in 1999 which is SCSI. After a while Nikon refused to support this scanner which cost me about 800.00. This is one of the many scanners that Vue Scan supports. If there was a SCSI card that my intel mac could use, I would still be using this scanner. The Vue scan software offers more options and control than most proprietary scanner software, and it allows one to create a scan that is output into a camera raw (Adobe DNG) format. From what I've experienced, camera raw format isn't available with scanner driver software. I bought Mr. Hamrick's pro version and the small cost was well worth it considering what it would cost to purchase a new more up to date Nikon film strip scanner. As for support for the software, he is constantly tweeking and upgrading its capabilities. There are many other reasons for making this purchase. One of them being that the native driver and plug in for photoshop for my HP G4010 keeps crashing Photoshop. I did update the HP drivers, but still the plug in causes Photoshop CS3 to crash, something HP says isn't possible, but it is happening. Go figure Vue Scan rocks and is a bargain. If you have a favorite scanner now, in 5 or 6 years after its manufacturer has either folded or declared it unsupported, you will find vue scan will let you keep it running and save you the money of purchasing a new scanner. ICONZ113 guys , you know there are workflow actions that can appear in the contextual menu when you right click. In ~/library make a folder called Workflows then another folder inside of that called Applications then another folder inside of that called Finder. Inside the finder folder place the batch workflow file inside. After restarting the finder you will be able to highlight whatever you want then right click. When the menu appears choose workflows then the batch workflow file. Then you will be presented with the options for renaming the files that are selected. If you currently have app zapper installed (i know a lot of people do) you can right now, right click in the finder and see the workflows option already there because app zapper also creates a zap workflow. In that case all the folders are already created for you. I mean creating 3 folders and placing a file and having it always available for u right thee in the menu is an easy alternative to having to pay money for an app. There are a whole bunch of different workflows you can download and use at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/ that work the same way and their free. NIGEL2112 For the life of me I cannot understand what you are talking about, I mean no offense dude but I've been using ABFR for a good while now and it's been totally rock solid and has just about every possible combination of ways to rename files that I can think of and quite frankly I doubt that I would have the bravery to go into Automator and attempt to recreate the same functionality and in any case I've tried the free rename apps and they're good but ABFR has it all so I bought it and have not regretted it once as I consider it a must have app until Apple comes up with an alternative and even then I don't think it would be as good and that's all I have to say about (ok, mock) the comments by 'Iconz113' except to say that I hope you have enjoyed reading this run-on sentence. CORPSECORPS ICONZ113; to be fair, you say "Inside the finder folder place the batch workflow file inside." Besides being redundant, that sentence doesn't specify where that file comes from. Personally i wouldn't give up ABFRX but i did some searches and i didn't find anything on my HD that seemed appropriate, even among things related to Automator. I do have AppZapper and yep, to my surprise there IS a ZAP! workflow in my contextual menu. I would never have known, because since Apple relegated contextual menu items to the "More" sub-menu instead of allowing the contextual menu to be organized according to what the user needs most, i don't even like to use it unless i must. I use the ABFRX hotkey so i don't have to use its CM item. (Version 8.27)

ICONZ113 This is an awesome app just 2 things bother me, first there is no support. If your one of those people that tend to email the developer for support or ask questions, your not going to get that here. Only thing you can do is have the website resend your serial number. Second I don't like how I cant specify the location of the downloaded file for each torrent. For example in transmission where ever I double click the .torrent file is the location where the file downloads. In Xtorrent its downloaded to the set default location you specified in system preferences, the default location is the downloads folder. Other then those two things I think Xtorrent is great. I like the searching capabilities, RSS features, and the speed. If you can deal with the cons I've listed above then go ahead and get it. (Version 1.1v53)

ICONZ113 well from what I understand safari 4 (not beta) now treats plugins as an exterior module not connected to the browser itself, so if plugins fail, the browser will not crash only the plugin would, allowing the browser to continue to function. In the past plugins would cause the browser to crash. (Version 1.10.1)

ICONZ113 this app is awesome, It does exactly what I want, organize my movies on other hard-drives, and play them using the default player the file format of the selected movie is associated with. If this app handled all media , pics, songs, and everything else I wouldn't use it, I use iphoto for pics, itunes for music, and now multiplex for movies, no multipurpose integrated media apps will have photo organization bette then iphoto or aperture in which it specializes, or better music organization then itunes. and no media player better then quicktime and VLC. simple, easy to use, and great looking app, Im sure its only going to get better, just don't add all the bullshit keep it like it is (Version 1.0.2)

ICONZ113 why do people hate this guy so much? as far as the applications go I use xtorrent, acquisition, and planning to try out newsfire (use netnewswire currently) and I havent had any problems with the apps. They work fine for me. If you have a problem and need to contact the developer for some reason you might not be able to from what I hear about people not being able to get ahold of him, but as for the apps they work fine, no glitches or hangs on my end and they look great.
