RapidWeaver | Aug 22 2009 |
IAMDORIAN To set the record straight, I am an illustrator and designer who pioneered electronic publishing. I watched as BBs gave way to primitive (and horrible ugly) HTML web sites, and now to CSS, Flash animations and every kind of scripting language you can imagine. I don't write code. Period! Never cared to, even though I can understand logic statements. My strength is in design and all that goes along with that, and I don't want to 'code.' This holds no joy, nor interesting challenges for me. My lifetime (what's left of it) is too precious to spend typing. So, this is one application I understand. How well do I understand it? Well . . . The first time I sat down and began using it it required the usual 'learning curve' you'd expect from a unique GUI. However, in one long evening-into-morning session, I had a good looking preliminary web site up and running. This is the strength of RapidWeaver. The plug-in developers (those whose products I am supporting) are responsive and clever, the themes base is constantly growing, and I cannot praise the concept behind this application enough. And yes, I have worked a tiny bit in early versions of GoLive a well as DreamWeaver. This approach is pretty intuitive, the pages are clean and load fast, and . . . work! If you're trying to get real work done, and you don't think that coding is the 'cats' meow,' then I highly suggest that you give this inexpensive, (fairly) intuitive and creative little application a spin. I did. I think it was one of those great little (minimal) investments which have simplified my life. (If you want to see what I cranked out in one night – less additional copy – see my SpagyricArts dot com site). Highly recommended. I'd give it six stars if I could. (Version 4.3rc1)

IAMDORIAN It is ridiculous to give a developer – especially on who has moved their application over to the Mac, at their own expense, for FREE – a 1-star review because they didn't make installation automatic. Perhaps a point off for this is perhaps reasonable, but come on . . . ! Let me the first to apologize for SOME Mac users, who apparently think that developers should all work for free. I seriously doubt that this user is a seasoned professional. Some of us do truly appreciate all those who attempt to port for Mac. It is certainly nice to have self-installing .DMGs, and nice Mac-like icons, but too much emphasis is placed on this when reviews in MU should focus on all the technical issues, and to vote according to balanced criteria. When an application is truly a free app, as this appears to be, then reviews should also take this into consideration. I would give this 4-stars for effort, but have not yet installed it, because I am a typical lazy Mac user and am used to auto-install features. But, at least I am willing to admit my biases. : ) Thanks for the port. Will examine this more closely asap.

IAMDORIAN Ditto on the files # limitations. I have had it crash when attempting to load a series of larger TIFFS as well, and this is problematic because modern cameras are producing ever larger files (the Canon 5D Mark II is now at 21 MP!). Overall, I haven't seen any features added in a long time, either. Something as simple as a movie viewing capability – allowing a series of time lapse shots, for example, to be views a a real-time 30 fps video – might be nice, as the preview already does a nice job of this. You can drag in the MAIN view and see a series of thumbnails that – once the previews are loaded) will let you scrub back and forth nicely. So, why not add a movie playback at one or more speeds? Overall, a nice fast viewer that reduces the need to boot up PS. However, either this gets updated soon, or it may be time to for some of us to move on. (Version 2.31)

Pantry | Jun 10 2009 |
IAMDORIAN The comment about a only a "finite number of people" wanting an application like this is so silly. The same can be said of PhotoShop! This is a perfect application for the iPhone/iPod. A can think of millions who own these gadgets that might want to have this handy little program (and an up-to-date database) when shopping. Now there's a million dollar idea! There are MANY people who'd want a solid food-larder tracking application, if only they knew how very useful something like this is. The money that can be saved (and who's got too much money?) by purchasing food in larger quantities (food storage), and planning meals, can be staggering. And EVERYONE has to eat! This sort of project does, however, require a strategy for timely use and rotation of older items. Planning requires logging dates and use/replacement of food stuffs. Careful planning strategies require a laborious tracking by hand, or a program just like this. If more people understood how to do this, and especially if they knew that this program existed (and that this might easily be accomplished) – who knows, using this program – and saving a small fortune, preparing for emergencies, and the security gained from talking care of and planning for your family's needs – might become as common as starting savings deposits, retirement funds and buying insurance. THRE IS NO BETTER INSURANCE than provident living! Every ancient culture which survived wide scale natural disasters learned to store food. OUr nation has forgotten this, and has allowed federal food stores to drop to an all-time low. So who's going to come and rescue us if something really bad happened? Hats off to the developer. I hope that this application matures into the slick solution it appears to be evolving into. Perhaps allowing several of the better menu planning programs to link to your application's data could insure a wide-scale adoption of this program as a back end" to such food preparation programs? ONe program that comes to mind is "a Cook' Books." This fine program already has an internal "pantry," but it is not as intuitive or flexible as this application is becoming. I'm sure the developer might welcome an option like this. And there are no other menu-type apps that I know of which have implemented pantry capabilities. Approaching these developers might prove lucrative. Best of luck, and thanks for developing a much-needed application. Oh, and I love the icon. It shows you care. (Version 1.2.2)

HMURCHISON It is of course not a silly statement but a factual one when view from the context of pricing. I showed my girlfriend Pantry(she LOVES shopping for food) and she was not interested in the least. The context of my statement is about the core market. You are correct that a small % of users want Photoshop and thus Photoshop is hundreds of dollars. Now if Adobe could sell Photoshop to say 3 billion people then I'm sure they'd be amenable to Photoshop at $75 or so but that's simply not the case. Pantry for the iPhone is worth $2.99 to me though the market "is" in fact limited for people wanting to track their food via computer. Will the developer really gain a three-fold increase in sales by lowering the price to $.99? I think you took "finite" a bit more pejoratively than my posting suggests. (Version 1.2.4)

MISCHIVO I sure hope you're correct and this is a response to that. IAMDORIAN So, a polygon-less animated Bryce. Nice, but about 20 years behind cool. MojoWorld (MW) from Pandromeda, tried this as a community, and the application was almost free. EVen their prices soared. I think the novelty wears off pretty fast. So, does the world need another MW? Priced similar to MW, one wonders how much room exists for yet another such application? Nice interface, and nice sample movies (see them at www.uisoftware.com/Voyager/index.html). But, come on Eric, $130.00?? I think that the only way this will survive the economic downturn is for a price point far below this. This said, the high end versions of the big landscape generation tool (starts with a "V" and ends in "UE") is now priced for pros (they need to reconsider their pricing as well), but their low end is pretty cool, not too pricey, and decades ahead of the look of this program. For a retro-look fractal landscape type program (better clouds, it is true) application, this is priced as if it were the only solution on the block. It is not. MW has been around for over a decade, and has a large online following. Best of luck, Eric. Love the Artmatic fractals program, but I just don't know about this... Problems: Installer (.app) is double-clicked and begins install, then up pops: "This installer requires admin privileges to run" message. Shuts me down. Ah well. (Version 1.6.2)

IAMDORIAN This is simply the best stand-alone LOSSLESS video codec out there, for the money. Video professionals attempting to maximize their hard drive space (that's all of us!) who need a real-time compression/decompression codec . . . this is it. Been using it for years. They are also religious about their stability updates. This said I do not use it constantly any more, as I do less video SFX work than I used to, but this product should be considered by those who seek for total lossless compression. There are few solutions that really do loose "0" data. This is one of them. (Version 2.7.5.15)

IAMDORIAN Tried a demo, and I am sold. I used to use a program called Be Safe!, but this has died. That developer was trying to satisfy this market's needs as well - serial number storage. Of all the "license" storage apps this appears to be the only one truly tailored to serial numbers storage/retrieval. This said, the app could use a separate activation # pop-up or divided field area in the license field. This is a commonly required piece of data for higher-end applications in the video and animation markets. I'd like to see this as a MUPromo item! I'll be buying my license soon. Good work. Apple Aperture | Apr 16 2009 |
"Have been comparing Lightroom 2 with Aperture 2. I do a lot of panos, and Lightroom has a simple integration with that Photo Merge feature in Photoshop. Aperture is a cumbersome, multi-step export operation." Yeah, but it is one ($150-200) Apple application, rather than 2 applications totaling more than $1000.00. If you already have PS, then what are you REALLY getting for your other $300.00? If you need a Pano program look in MU, there are some dedicated programs far more powerful than anything in LightRoom, with Aperture at $150.00 and your remaining $150.00, you can have your proverbial cake and eat it too. I think the decision is a no brainer. Adobe needs to restructure its pricing in a big way. It is now high-priced bloatware. Yes, I own a couple of suites, but I wouldn't if I didn't have to. Apple's pricing policies are democratizing. I think we should think about the impact of an entire market sector supporting good programming at rock bottom prices. What might happen . . . if? IAMDORIAN This is a great utility. When you need to rename batches of images (I do this very often) then there's no better solution, and the developer is constantly tweaking this to make it better. It's true that by making continual updates developers can give their applications maximum user exposure, and thereby increase sales, but this is one of the real benefits of such sites. IAMDORIAN As has been echoed by other reviewers, this is a nice little app, and useful for learning new key strokes. HOwever, the price is way too hight for this sort of thing. As with lots of clever applications, this is one which should be included in Apples OSX; it's very Mac-ish. It does need to be priced like the utility it is. This is not some major software project, but it is nice. At 1/3 of the cost it might gain a real following, but I too would not have paid for this had it not been that it came in a MacUpdate Promo bundle. And it's not that I am a cheapskate - I have paid form many dozens of small independently developed software apps and utilities, and continue to support small developers. (Version 4.4)

Yojimbo | Mar 23 2009 |
IAMDORIAN I just thought I'd put my two cents in here. I have used YoJimbo for quite a while (since version 1.x something or other), and even recommended this to my mother. I love the simplicity of the interface ,and it's URL/Web Page download/archival function. However, it simply does not download PDFs any more. They need to be downloaded to your hard drive, and then re-imported. This has not been fixed now for at least nine months to a year. When it was released it looked like this was going to evolve into a truly useful research application, but it looks more and more (to me) that this is a dead issue. No updates in a year? Applications like "Circus Ponies' NoteBook" are almost at the point where they can compete with this, and DevonThink Pro has the added advantage of tagging files, and uses a non proprietary database (a real issue with YoJimbo if you ever want to migrate your data to some other application, forget it!) for storing files. I think that, if this program is going to remain viable, that it needs to be seriously updated. Hey, there are many who'd pay a competitive price for a truly useful product. Some of the basic features that such a information management system needs (IMHO) include (a partial list): 1) Standard Mac OS file (open) data storage (X) 2) Webpage/PDF archival/preview (like YoJimbo does so well) (√) 3) Indexing/searching/retrieval of embedded/highlighted/notated text or other items (X) 4) Powerful batch/category export features (X) 5) Of course, stability (√) 6) Audio/video annotation features (X) So, what does the future hold for YoJimbo? It would certainly be nice if the developers would answer this question. Where are feature-filled updates . . any updates? Looks like I may need to move on? :::sniff::: (Version 1.5.1)

Adobe Photoshop CS4 | Jan 20 2009 |
IAMDORIAN I have to agree with the complaints about constant upgrade and pricing policies. Digital 10 function caculators were once more than $250.00, and they're all but free, and Adobe's products cost the same as they did 25 years ago, but they are very sophisticated now. This means high development/maintenance costs. High costs are usually with professional level tools due to a smaller user base. Still, Adobe's monopoly is a bit hard to take. Photoshop is like Klenex® brand facial tissues. You'd think they might cut everyone a break, but this is unlikely. Those who control the stock aren't about to give up their profit so that we can all paint with pixels! "Global" recession and crashing economies will eventually level the playing field. What really irks me is Adobe's pro PC bias when cranking out their apps. CS2 was terribly buggy on Mac, and Adobe (this is policy, by the way) pretended nothing was wrong. If I had a nickel for every time a developer has told me that the problem I had was unique, and they'd never seen it before, I'd be bloody rich! I say with with some authority as I started using Photoshop Beta 0.84, and ended my beta testing on v. 2.15, after they denied a Ripping problem with clipping path nodes, and this went on for some two years! Of course there are a lot more buggy, ugly, virus-ridden PC computers out there than Macs due to a general lack of long range perspective on the part of consumers. Too bad. This makes life as a Mac user the life of an underdog. This is a choice. But Adobe has ket up Mac development, even though the Mac user base is much smaller now than the PC base. So, I think a small thanks is in order. Adobe take note. Mac users paid for your startup costs, and continue to suffer your PC-biases. Don't bite this hand that feeds you. All it takes is a cheap Indian or Chinese Photoshop-like competitive app, and you guys will be begging us to buy your products. Keep your perspective. Treat us nice and keep us loyal. Simple. Here's a developer who is selfless enough spend his time writing and then constantly improving a very useful FREE software application, and you cannot understand why he does not continue a parallel development for an old hardware platform? Just a suggestion, but perhaps you might spend YOUR "spare" time working to buy a new Mac, or provide the developer with yours services (for free), so that he has the "spare" time to re-compile this program for others. Combustion | Jan 8 2009 |
IAMDORIAN And here it is, Combustion 2008, announced in 2009. What's up? Anyone who wants to just browse the forums at Creative Cow can find out. Search on "Combustion 2008." Nothing but complaints on speed and total lack of stability. I would have upgraded long ago - loved Version 3, but 4 was buggy and 2008 is . . . buggy on Mac. Crash city. Many, many poeple would like to upgade, but haev waited for AD to display even one iota of concern, publically, for their support for Mac products. Mums the word, just keep the links and auto-purchase links up. No Mac word from developers. No serious attempts to reach out to the Mac universe, except for the occasional advertisement. No support, no concern from the primarily PC-centric AutoDesk. They even killed ImageModeler for Mac, and everything else but their VR program (recently purchased from RealViz). There's a huge "?" when it comes to AutoDesk. Note: Guys, I was using Illuminaire in sub 1.0 betas. Once a GREAT product, with so much potential (originally only on the Mac, I might add). If you actually supported the Mac again, then many of us would we'd buy/upgrade your program . . . AE notwithstanding. Combustions vector roto-scoping is excellent, as is tracking and many features (although it would be a nice hesture to upgrade your OEM'd ParticleFX to keep up with the last version by the developer). So, wouldn't it be nice if AutoDesk representatives would post some reassuring comments . . . anywhere?! In here would be nice. On CreativeCow? Anywhere? In the software business, no news is usually bad news. So, when is a stable Combustion 2009---coming out, that's the question? Even a stable 2008 version IN 2009! Sprite Swarm | Aug 11 2008 |
IAMDORIAN Cute. I also like the movement. It would be nice of colors could cycle in some magical way which was controlled by a logical theme. Also, replication might be allowed among secondary sprites, and having some sprites could collide only to "poof" into sparkles, falling stardust, or that sort of thing; might make it more interesting. Overall, a nice start, and one more reason to stare in a stupor at your computer monitor whilst NOT getting your work done. Should be outlawed in all serious left-brained businesses, and a warning posted (may cause cross-eyes in Siamese cats). (Version 1.1)

IAMDORIAN My earlier report - about a larger number of image files choking one of the "themes" - appears premature. I got a folder (from iPhoto, not dragged and dropped . . . perhaps the issue) with 99 images (mostly small in size) to run fine. I will add that when you've got this many images in the que, BannerZestPro really slows a system down (2GHz iMac - White case). However, considering the fact that it does seem to handle such large numbers, and still runs its dynamic previews, kudos to the developers. One of my only gripes still remains window size limitations. This is especially true for the "Your Images" selection window. This should have the option to drag it out to show the entire collection or folder of images. Limiting image sizes to thumbnails would be OK. However, being limited here to dragging the slider down to preview all one's content is enough to raise blood pressure. Overall, great program, and a truly elegant way for non-programmers to work with "flash" banners. (HINT: Adobe "flash" developers might just learn a little from this application?) (Version 1.2)

BannerZest Pro | Jul 25 2008 |
IAMDORIAN Pros: Continually being updated. Recently (v1.2) added new themes. We need a lot more (50 nice ones is a good goal), but these are generally solid and mostly tastefully done. Cons: A few problems in the new themes, however. It seems that "Sticker" cannot handle large images, and at least one theme basically just looped when asked to handle 35 images+. Cropping/resizing, although nicely implemented is still clumsy. We need numeric entry (at minimum) in order to fine tune positions and sizes. The Inspector settings window is fine small (where one is simply choosing parameters), but some windows - like the media selection and cropping windows - do need a lot more flexibility. After all, why did I buy this 30" monitor, and 16 Gb of RAM, so I could futz around in a 200 px x 400 px window?? I could do that on a Mac SE! Overall a bit too pricey (especially the pro version) I suppose, but I bought it anyway. Developers do need to eat, but not steak and lobster! Overall, a nice package. Keep up the quality Mac programming. (Version 1.2)

Whoever wants it should get in touch with us (sdk 'at' aquafadas 'dot' com) Regarding window sizes. We will look at this. However, when cropping the media, we deliberatly set the scale factor to 1:1 to ensure that you see the media at the same size as it will have in the banner. This explains the small image sizes in edit mode. Regarding the theme that has problems with 35+ images, please send us some additonal info if you can (support 'at' aquafadas 'dot' com) (Version 1.2)

IAMDORIAN FINALLY we're seeing stability returning to this fabulous product. So far, so good. However, why does "Save Project" do nothing, and no "saved projects" appear in the "Recent Projects" menu? This certainly needs fixing (Whoops!) One of the things that makes this product less productive than apps like Aperture, is a lack of either keyboard combinations for many of the commands (mousing is always slow...) or scripting. Another is somewhat slow redraws. It would be very useful if the dust brush corrections would be visible at least at two settings, 100% and 50%, instead of 100%. For those NOT working on a 30"+ monitor, this is an oversight. Most images from todays cameras are huge, so zooming in and out - to fix, and then find imperfections - gets unnecessarily tedious. I set up several very useful commands on my "Shuttle®" but there are still many I cannot control via keyboard shortcuts. This needs to be amended. As for stability, it appears to be functional once again. And, as expected, no comment (publicly) from the manufacturer. At least, it appears they ARE listening. IAMDORIAN My need to access/backup YoJimbo files has to do with my research. I have (literally) thousands of files) in the database. I use YoJimbo to download web pages all the time, many with extensive images. There are simply too many files to simply transfer one-by-one, and accessing them via the internet is not what I need. I need them to be available to several machines, and also I need new additions to be available across the machines in question. The only solution I can think of is to use one DB on a central network disk. However, this is not possible using YoJimbo, as far as I know. With iPhoto you can do this, for example. It would also be nice to be able to export files easily to other formats - like PDF. I can always print them, but this is a hassle. I've also mentioned the ability to highlight and add a searchable note to a text selection or image would be VERY useful. Lately YoJimbo will not quit without crashing. I think a major update is in order... (Version 1.5.1)

IAMDORIAN Although this may not be the fastest program out there, the Pantry feature makes this a professional application. That said, this feature could be expanded and made more friendly for those interested in preparedness. In these days of uncertainty and rapidly escalating food prices, food purchased in bulk, and stored, not only saves a LOT of money, but is there when you need it. Something to consider for those who do not think that the thin veneer of our modern civilization incorruptible. The nutrition information in this program is also well implemented. There are may reasons to support this developer. Speed and interface beauty are desirable Mac features, but it is a little less important than expanded functionality. I'll give this 5 stars (it deserves 4-4.5) to offset these dumb low ratings. Developer, keep up the good work. (Version 1.2.6)

IAMDORIAN A small addendum to v.5.1. The problem – which appeared in the beta using the latest Apple Leopard OSX - is still with us. It did not seem to be a problem before about a month prior to the release date of the final Mac version of 5.1 (hope this helps?). I use this application for time-lapse, primarily. This means loading 300-1500 images (usually only JPEGs) into the processing set-up window. After the last few OSX upgrades, the time to move the images into the pre-process que (for stacking) now takes about 20 minutes+ for 500 images. At 600+ images times ran into an hour or more. This is only half the problem. After running the first batch, if I try loading a set of images, Pro Elite fails. Throw away all plist files and reset permissions and I got one more batch to run. Then, crash on the next, and so on. What gives? As it is - at least for people like me with a large batch to run - this is close to unusable. And what's up with the lack of controls over the famous DxO lens softness. It seems...disabled...using JPEGs. This was one of DxO's best features. I already bought the upgrade, so I am a "believer." However, I am starting to wonder if I made a mistake. As the last reviewer mentioned, version 4 was pretty solid. What gives? I hope the DxO gnomes are busy fixing all these -should-have-been-fixed-in-beta issues? H-E-L-P! I am using an 8-processor Mac Pro with 16Gb of RAM and virtually unlimited hard drive space. When I see some fixes I'll change my rating. (Version 5.1)

WILLIAM OBRIEN DxO 5.1 build 6815 will not process a Canon raw file from a 1Ds-III in a reasonable manner. Color is off, JPEG SIZE is way to low, 3 meg file from a 22 meg raw file. Most of the detail is gone. Manufacturer has been painfully slow to respond, actually they have not responded. Any others in agreement, suggestions as to what I may have done incorrectly are welcome. However, this statement... Simply put, it just does not process my images. I select them, import in the project, select the parameters, then hit "start process". Probably the reason this happened is you did not understand how to use their new and improved (what do you want for Windoze developers) not-very-intuitive interface. However, once you figure it out...it DOES work. I think the reason no one responded is that there are not a lot of developers in this company, and most of those you might tell this to would likely laugh at you, and assume you are a novice. The fact is, the last few days using the Beta (I think it quit a day or two ago), followed an Apple QT update. I think this broke the Beta. I hope that the commercial v5.1 release has already taken the problem into consideration, and fixed it? Other than issues like this (not uncommon for smaller developers) I believe that there has been a genuine effort to produce a stable and powerful image processing solution here. To state your complaints only, especially when one of them as likely your own problem (perhaps unique to your machine, or your lack of expertise) is a bit unfair and may mislead those looking for something this powerful to turn away. Is this your intent, or are you simply grousing? Hope you figure things out. I also hope DXO stays on top of the on-going Apple OSX fixes? Perhaps a small note in this forum from a DXO rep would help all concerned to get behind this very good software. When it works well there is no substitute. IAMDORIAN EXIF Restricted file processing issue! I think it would be helpful if the developer provided a workaround for one of this application's little snafus. Since all processing is as automated as possible, the developer seems to have felt that once images are tweaked in DXO that no one would want to re-tweak them, and so all EXIF data is stripped from the image. Since hard drive space is at a premium, users might (I do) throw out originals. Ooops. Once this is done DXO's products will not allow ANY modification. In other words, not EXIF data, no processing. This is a major oversight, as I see it. (Almost) All of the features in DXO's products can be controlled manually. Why not allow EXIF-stripped images to be processed? After all, there are many features which might be used to alter already cleaned up images, or to modify (like the nice dust/spot repair tool) to adapt them for some other use. If you're going to strip our EXIF data in the first place, give us an option to go back and reprocess stripped images using as many other functions as possible. Or better yet, simply ALLOW AN OPTION to retain all (or relevant) EXIF data. This would eliminate the restriction on files. This is probably my biggest gripe with this otherwise incredibly useful software. Such a superior application should allow us some sort of work around for this problem. This SHOULD be included in the official retail release. It's not too late developer(s)! (Version 5.0b)

IAMDORIAN It's gratifying to see that DXO has FINALLY made their interface a lot more logical. The new beta (been running it for a couple of weeks now) shows that the development crew is finally making some really good interface decisions. Their list of bugs was pretty long, but they do know the problems and are working them out. Some memory issues with the beta, especially when you're trying to modify presets a few times. Hopefully these will also be worked out asap and we can have a stable working version. DXO DEVELOPERS TAKE NOTE: A VERY useful feature might be a slide strip sort of preview, like that in ViewIt. ViewIt loads thumbnails, and then allows you to scroll through the images at any speed. For things like time-lapse footage and reviewing VR shots, this is really neat. It also permits one to see the shifts in exposure and framing for a series of stills, in a way that no other program does. Add this feature, and you've got the quintessential automated correction tool. (Version 5.0b)

IAMDORIAN I agree. This sort of feature I can understand as a revenue source for Freeware, but not for a cash-on-the-barrel-head commercial product. This needs to go, or at least we need to be able to turn it off! I am tempted to buy into the current MacUpdate Parallels bundle deal, and BannerZest seemed like a nice addition, however, I wanted to upgrade it to the Pro version as well. Now I'm thinking twice. IAMDORIAN I've been using Yojimbo since it was first released. My constant researching absolutely requires some way to keep track of files - not just links - to webpages. Although Yojimbo is very easy to use (and very Mac-like), it lacks 3 essential features which limit its usefulness. This is too bad, because at the price point ($100.00 less than DevonThink) it would be the #1 choice for most people, were it more feature-rich. 1) This application is desperately short-sighted as it lacks any way to sync its (often massive over time) database with another version of Yojimbo running on other machines. Although Apple's iSync includes it on its list of backups, I've seen no database transfer/backup going on, so I have to assume it only backs up some preference settings. This is about 0.1% of the problem. 2) Although it does a great job grabbing individual web pages, this application should be merged with the power of something like SiteSucker, so that it can (what the bloated and expensive Acrobat program can no longer do very well) archive an entire website. This is a critical need as well - at least for researchers who might use a program like this on any sort of regular basis. 3) Yojimbo should be enabled to create both linked notes, as well as reference links from an image or line of copy in one archived article, to another Yojimbo archive, both for footnoting as well for indexing purposes. I'd think that adding a notation feature could be expanded to an indexing function via a contextual menu? Although this is not intended to be as sophisticated as DevonThink, adding these few features would make this a first class research tool. I'd think that these features could be added in a "Pro" version - if BB wants to make a little money back on their R&D. I am sure I would not be the only person willing to pay $50.00 for this sort of feature set. I sincerely hope someone at BareBones is reading this?

Yojimbo | Jul 8 2008 |

STEVEWILLIAMS I'm not sure why you have said that Yojimbo doesn't sync - I have copies on my iMac and my MacBook and they keep in sync perfectly through MobileMe (not everyone has this, I realise, as you have to pay to subscribe, but it works very well). Also, links between notes is easy too: right-click on the name in the items list of the note you want to link to, select "Copy Item Link" then go to your other note and select Paste - voila! I agree with other commentators that an update to the software is long overdue though. And the attitude of the developers is very odd. (Version 1.5.1)

IAMDORIAN DANGER - WILL ROBINSON - DANGER! The last (what is it?) 2 version of iPhoto, Running on a 2GHz (white) iMac, strip ALL INFORMATION above (early count) 154 characters from any information linked to your images. THIS IS SERIOUS. I log LOTS of data when I pull references from the Web, for example, for copyright reasons - links, notes, etc. I've lost ALL but the first 154 characters on ALL FILES (yes, I add a lot of data) and this means (usually) the LINK itself as I tend to put this last. APPLE - WHAT GIVES??? If this has happened to any of you I HOPE you have a very recent full library data backup? Luckily mine is only maybe a week old, but for some people, I fear, this will be disastrous. The new version does NOT fix this problem, and still truncates. I hope Apple is NOT stripping our functionality in order to further sales of Aperture? That would me a MicroSoft tactic. This latest faux pas is certainly inexcusable at any rate. This is NOT the Apple software we've come to know -AND TRUST! So far this problem does not appear to have affected my iPhoto data on a new (last series) Mac Pro (Quad-Dual Core). IAMDORIAN I have to agree with the complaints over the price being to high. In fact, it's arguable that this level of screen capture functionality should be included in Apple's OSXes in the first place. However, to be fair, this is probably the most up-to-date screen/movie capture app going on Mac OSX. Plus, it costs money to license Flash technology at this level, so if you want Flash output (many do) this is not a bad deal at all (not to mention convenient). It might behoove the developer to the the Lite/Pro approach, leaving out the Flash component in the lower-end version - especially useful if you already have a Flash encoder and don't need another. Pricing this product at a $15-$20 range for a lite version, and $50+ for the Pro version, would end all the negative comments (more stars, more sales, - quid quo pro). To be totally fair, SnapX Pro (finally) upgraded their product a few months back to make it compatible with the newer version(s) of Mac OS X (there was quite a delay originally). I bought this once and have had free upgrade forever. How fair is that? So, now that I have confused everyone...

IAMDORIAN I hope this doesn't mean that development is being dropped on YoJimbo? After all, as nice as YoJimbo is, it desparately needs a few features added to make it a truly great research tool. One feature I had hoped this might address is a backup function. YoJimbo can be used to store an awful lot of pages, and - to date - I know of no way to fully back up the internal YoJimbo information/links to an associated file folder of downloaded pages. Major oversight! Does WebJimbo answer this problem, can anyone tell me? SyncTogether allows for YoJimbo sybncong, but not for appending/moving/combining YoJimbo internal data files, but not any actual stored files. The documentation on WebJimbo is almost nonexistent. The installation assistant walks you through the confusing set up, but I couldn't find any other information about this application's features online, and I never did get it to work. Not much on sales hype are these guys? How's about a good paragraph or two-long schpiel describing why I would want to shell out $25.00 for this, and how it differs from - or augments - YoJimbo. Come on on people, not everybody who uses YoJimbo is an HTML-programming BBEdit nerd. BareBones is one thing, we need more than 0 info (at least a memo!). Confused... Hoping for a thorough backup solution before my data is lost forever. PS. Thanks for YoJimbo, a great app...so far. (Version 1.0)

RIXM I just installed WebJimbo last night and thought the automated setup did a great job of explaining and walking me through the setup. While this part of the interface isn't the most polished in terms of a Mac app, it was very easy to follow. I could see how, if you aren't familiar with opening ports on your router, that might throw you for a bit (Google is your friend), but overall it was painless. I'm using WebJ from work this morning and it's sweet! Added notes, searched for stuff, no problems! Since I have to work in a Windows world at work this app could be a great asset to me. Time will tell. Contact the developer if you haven't already, I'm sure he/they would be open to suggestions and willing to provide further guidance on setup. As for the price, that's up to the developer to set. He's done the hard work and has to support it. ...Having said that, $29.95 is just a bit steep for me. Maybe there will be a macupdate/maczot promo? Or a coupon for the subscribers to the barebones yojimbo list? Launch special? Who knows? Either way, I'm going to exercise the demo as much as I can during the trial... Not trying to refute your experience, just giving another view based on mine.

Webjimbo | Jul 29 2007 |
SWGS1 From the WebJimbo developer's site, on the main page: "Webjimbo runs a small web server on your Mac. This means that wherever you are, you have access to your Yojimbo notes, bookmarks and everything else as long as you're at a computer with an internet connection. Say you run Yojimbo at home: now that important information's available to you at work or from an internet cafe. You can add and edit items too, so you can record information as it comes to hand. When you're at home, you just use Yojimbo as usual." its a web server customized specifically to share Yojimbo data. You use a web browser from another computer to access your Yojimbo data remotely, even add new notes. There are some limitations, but the developer lists those pretty clearly on the site. I'm not sure where your confusion came in as far as what this application does. Take more time to read about what the app is trying to do before downloading it. Personally, I'm looking forward to an iPhone optimized interface, if we see some traction in that area, then I think the developer would start seeing a lot more license registrations. I'd love to upgrade, and to believe that Adobe will put serious money behind updating and maintaing - not to mention inproving - this application. I think that it should be obvious that Adobe needs to make this commitment overtly, and publicly, to reassure dedicated Apple users (who feel that they've had a boot heel ground in their creative faces over the last couple of years) that they're not just milking this application for a few million more in Dreamweaver R&D money. We're pulling for you Adobe, just let us know we're still written into your company's future, and you'll have my bucks.

Electric Image Animation System | Mar 7 2007 |
IAMDORIAN One could spend a lot of time on reviewing all the strengths (and weaknesses) of the various Mac 3D/Animation/Modeling apps, but there are better formums for this. I've been an EIAS user since version 1.5 (1992), and it does have some strengths, but it is no longer a modeler, nor does it have true volumetric rendering. As has been noted, it is not for character animation. However, it handles some things very quickly, and can handle large files. Plug-in companies like Konkeptoine, NorthernLights and others have kept this package alive. And for LightWave bashers, let's not forget that the original developers of Electric Image now work at NewTek! Let's hope this package stays alive, as it does offer some nice texturing plug-ins, and enough tricks to raw speed to do a lot of good work. Its renders are very nice as well. But until near-real-time rendering previews are implemented (there are several options for LW) some tasks are still very tedious. Also, it would be nice if TreeStorm would support v6.6, but for now this is not the case. Love you EIAS! (Version 6.6.1)

SyncTogether | Feb 8 2007 |
IAMDORIAN I am troubled by these reports because - 1) There are no positive reports (not on Macupdate, Versionracker, or on the SyncTogether forums posts), and 2) because the only real report (what does only one report mean, few users or everyone is having a bang-up time?) is negative (lost data, very slow, unstable, etc.). I REALLY need a software solution like this, and am happy to plunk down my $50.00 (a great deal if it works as advertised), but with the reported issues, I wanted to try a demo first. Sadly, it appears that there is (apparently) no demo version any more. The download links at both MU and VT are pointers to MarkSpace only. What does all this add up to? Well, it's a big red light to me, screaming : "Warning, Will Robinsons, Warning!" 1) Can someone from www.marcspace.com please comment: what of this (these) issue(s), are they being, or have they been, resolved? 2) Can we get a demo? How? Thanks...Dorian (Version 1.0)

SyncTogether | Feb 17 2007 |
I am the original developer of MySync (which became SyncTogether). Although I have continued to work with Mark/Space on SyncTogether, I'm writing here in a personal capacity. As far as a demo is concerned, that's really a Mark/Space question, so I won't comment on that right now. As far as the user reviews go, if you look back over the reviews here on MacUpdate, almost all of these relate to the original MySync, and most are very favourable. VersionTracker has a few more negative comments, but these all relate to MySync, and are largely from people who felt (with some justification - sorry about that), that they didn't receive adequate support during the transition. On both sites, the app has a four star, or greater rating. The SyncTogether forum at Mark/Space is slightly different. This is for discussion of problems with the app, and gives users a direct point of contact with the engineering teams and vice versa. It's not surprising that there are more problem reports than praise there. In fact, I've been more surprised at the lack of issues, and the low numbers of support requests that have been received. Some users will always run into problems with syncing - there are a lot of moving parts, including Sync Services and the client applications. For examples that don't involve SyncTogether, see Apple's .mac sync forum at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957 However, the overwhelming majority of SyncTogether user's experiences seem to have been relatively problem free as far as I can tell.

LONGTERM I've been trying to get SyncTogether to work for weeks now. I bought it when it was released, updated it when the update was posted, but have had terrible results. Their tech support respondes, albeit 2 or 3 days after I posted my tech support request. I went through this twice, and am once again trying to get it to work through tech support, but so far nothing works. One of the ridiculous suggestions posted by their forum's moderator was to make sure that iSync is configured to allow browser bookmark syncing. If I wanted to use .Mac I wouldn't have bought this program in the first place... amazing. This program has been a complete waste of money, and I bought 2 licenses so that I could use it on 4 machines. So I've wasted $100. (Version 1.0.1)

ViewIt | Dec 26 2006 |
IAMDORIAN The best of its class, ViewtIt makes a number of image-processing and previewing tasks a lot easier. I don't use it exclusively for image dumps from my camera, so my needs are a bit different than some I've read. There are only a couple of things I would personally like to see augmented in this great little App. 1) I'd love to see us able to resize thumbnails. This has been one feature that has never been added, and should be. At least a size default option in prefs would be better than nothing at all, although perhaps an option to toggle the auto-resize border width (currently what it does) -or- size option, needs to be added. This would be a nice feature. 2) An auto-play and loopable thumbnail-movie preview feature would really make time-lapse previewing far easier. Currently you can see a quick preview of all thumbnails by dragging in the main window view. A nice feature. However, for those of us creating time-lapse sequences from stills, the ability to see this playing as a movie would eliminate the need for going through the time consuming process of creating the equivalent in AE or some other motion graphics program. 3) We could always use a few feature/option updates in the HTML gallery creation tool. It is very useful as it is now, but who'd turn down an occasional new feature, eh? Just a thought. Overall, an indespensible digital arrow in my production quiver. Keep up the great work, and thanks for supporting Mac and Mac-Intel computing! (Version 2.18)

Previously I mentioned the need for archive depth in the web archive, and here are a few more things that came to my mind as very usefu features I'd like to see added. 1) Some highlighting/imbedded and searchable feature like Adobe's PDF highlighting/note embedding capabilities. I mean, it's great to have all these archives, but when researching I always need to take notes - these would be best embedded within the doc in question. 2) An internal links system, like hyperlinks, but this could be limited to YoJimbo archives/notes/bookmarks only. It would be extremely cool to be able to jump from one related archived file, note and.or bookmark to another as needed, to follow a research lead or train of thought, etc. 3) Although YoJimbo lets you open up a document, and therefore to "print to PDF," it would be really a neat trick of we could select one or more documents - and in the case of web archives of many levels (wink, wink) - include all these levels, in an doc we export/save/print to a single PDF. If this required a legal Pro version of Acrobat, so be it. It would be a handy time-saver. [gears turning] (Version 1.2)

IAMDORIAN Really coming along, but needs some features. 1) The ability to save drawn Paths w/mileage information. This goes for GPS tracks too. 2) Some inteface clean up, especially the way the twirly folders operate. Kind of clunky (so far) 3) Time/Date sunlight map overview that would provide for at least a simple way to see - based on current or other times/deates - what is/and is not in sunlight. 4) A Mac-density indicator that lights up as the cursor passes over cities/communities with a high concenrtation of Apple computers. One does need to know the lay of the land when one travels - even virtually (This last feature should remain optional, and should be disabled on all PCs! : ) Keep up the good work Google-guys (and gals) (Version 4.0.1563)

DxO Optics Pro | Jun 5 2006 |
IAMDORIAN This is the best software of its sort that I know of. The results range fromg reat to amazing. New licensing agreements finally make the pricing structure more reasonable (Pro version is $150 and Pro Elite version is $300.00), but this is not cheap software. It's sole purpose is to process your images and make them as clean and sharp as possible. The specificity of lens, aperture, focal length and camera body setting, coupled to a truly professional sharpening algorithm means that your images come out as good as their going to. I wish DxO would come out with a dongle-protected version of the software, because I loath the upload/download IP-address licensing scheme (something a lot of companies have gone to). I may want to move an installation to a specific machine for processing, and then put the software back on my main machine, and this is not feasible as you're locked into a two-machine install by IP. But my biggest gripe (are you listening DxO garçons?) is this is NOT YET A UNIVERSAL application, and I bought an Intel Mac for one reason - SPEED! Overall, this is a must have package for pros. Fred Mirand's sharpening tool is nice (and inexpensive), and PanoTool's Lens Fix PS plug-in is certainly an option, but this is the best, hands down (plus Lens Fix does not yet support the Canon 5D). I process hundreds to thousands of shots for time-lapse applications and I'd be dead without being able to batch process my images with this great tool. If you need this, you'll know it! Apple Mac OS X | May 30 2006 |
IAMDORIAN Danger Will Robinson...Danger! I have been a die hard Mac fan - no addict - since 1986. I've seen OSes come and go, but the latest Intel Mac version of OSX, OSX 10.4.6 is software = to the Krell monster from the ID. It may well kill all you love about your Mac. After reinstalling a huge complex system 5 times (yes, count 'em, 5 times!) I feel it fair to warn anyone thinking of buying the Intel iMacs to BEWARE. Those who've suffered the issues generated by the 7.0.1-7.0.4 version of QuickTime (crashed by video card, factory installed Apple card, by the way), and Adobe's installer issues know what I am talking about. Apple NEEDS TO LISTEN, take immediate steps (and perhaps even apollogize?)! The Adobe's CS2 Installer WILL lock up no matter how you install (no mater what options you try) from a single program to the Entire CS2 Suite. I don't know who's fault this is (likely Adoobe's) but the facts are in. My own testing shows VersionCue absolutely deadly to 10.4.6, and the CS2 Installer will lock up causing damage (illegal file names, directoy damagte of many sorts) depending upon when it tries to finish the install...every time! Hard ReBoot is mandatory, as is ddisk repair. In one case even a repair was impossible! There also appears to be issues with PACE (so-called) anti-piracy software, and a known issue with Formac's TVR software was a real system freezer under OS X 4.41. Not sure if the latest version fixes anything, but users take note the software does not claim Intel compatibility. Over all I am seriously dissapointed. Developers better get their acts toghether, or Apple better stop development and start fixing things pronto. As I said, I am Apple's biggest fan, but this is like we're on Windows OS or something. I am starting to wonder whether it is actually possible to run on an Intel chip with the sort of stability we expected from the PowerPC chips? Did I make a mistake buying into Apple's hype, or will they pull this off? I have recently bought two Inel iMacs and am very, very dissapointed. I have lost a serious amount of time rebuilding systems, and this has cost me dearly. [wringing hands...] If you want to install Adobe's Suite (and what artist can afford not to?) on an Intel iMac, you need to use v4.41 of the OS, install the suite (MINUS VersionQue!) and THEN upgrade. I am doing this even now as I write this. There is no other way. Adobe, p-l-e-a-s-e patch this. I haev thousands invested in your software, and don't deserve this. None of us do. I am also suspicious of some of my crashes having links to MS' Office Suite software installs (no big surprise, Office '2004' is right!). I am forced to play it safe by installing this into a separate user log-in altogether, just in case. What a nightmare! A B-I-G dissapointment. Is Steve no longer "on the Job(s)"?. IAMDORIAN Very simple program, but that's good to soem degree, For example my mother is hopelessly lost using even rudmentary system system features. Additionally this is a nice application for research. We all need a simple way to store web archive files, bookmarks and the like. However, there are some basic features which are quite conspicuous in their absence. • Web archives needs a "levels" function, or integrtation with a site sucking program like SiteSucker. The old Mac version of Internet Explorer - for all it's shortcomings - did this multi-level archival thing well, albeit locking the files into a MS proprietary format (ouch!). • This app needs some serious BookMark functionality which is missing. Being able to import a browsers BookMarks, history inks and to export them, consolidate them (and that sort of thing) , is a glaring omission. Hope this gets added. I'd buy it then, as a replacement for URL Manager (development seems ended on this once promising and incredibly useful application). • I love the serial numbers features, but for this to replace other dedicated serial number collection programs it needs more possibile entry fields. Serial numbers for more expensive/advanced applicaitons usually have things like Activation numbers, temporary serial numbers (before activation numbers arrive via E-mail) and that sort of thing. Additionally, for serial numbers a "Reports" function and ther ability to export a collection of serial numbers as text (tab or comma-delinated, etc.) files would be mandatory for full functionality. • I'd like to be able to drag-and-drop "Collections" to reorganize them. This would greatly enhance this tools use as an organizational references collection tool. I'll be watching this deveopment closely. This could be a Swiss Army Knife for the serious Mac user, and coming as it does from the creators of BB Edit, it might live longer than other solutions we've seen comeing and going lately. Best wishes... (Version 1.1)

IAMDORIAN Very smooth little app. I know it's only a FREE Beta (thanks, by the way) but perhaps now is the time to add some finishing touches? We need an audio option to record from streamed a source, so that this can compete with "...ZPro" for recording streams. This is a glaring ommision at this time. If you added this today, and started selling this, you could. As for pricing. "...ZPro" has nice options, and has been pretty solid for some time (on most machines) but currently this product is not Universal. Why reward such sluggishness? Also, (and read carefully) "...ZPro" is simply over-priced by perhaps 3X.. Advice: DO NOT FOLOW THEIR EXAMPLE! My suggestion is to ask $15.00 for this and you'd sell it hand-over-fist...not to mention good karma! Any price over $20.00 and you're market share will plummet. Perhaps non-HD for $15.00 and a Pro HD version for $25.00 or something. Just don;t get greedy. Many small deveopers get this way. Prove yourself and your product to us first. After all, why would I pay such a high price to to see you dissapear and not spport your prodeuct in a year? This is a serious issue. Many of us Mac-heads have been burnt before. Think carefully. Isn't the sale of 100,000 units at $20.00 (within 2 months) better than selling 5,000 unins for $80.00 (over the next year)? [do the math] That's about what the difference will be.

IAMDORIAN I echo these other opinions. SideNote is an essential research tool, and has few shortcomings. It does seem to handle larger files (images and such, and I do mean LARGE) with difficulty, but it is a great too...and FREE, I might add! A few things I'd like to see added would be: 1) FIirst and foremost, a simple exprt function. This feature is a serious oversight, but understandable, since this is a copy-paste sort of program. Please...add export capability?! 2) More file formats need to be supported. A pdg conversion capability would be nice, and perhaps indirect links to QT movies, and QTVR so we can at least view proxies. 3) An option added under PErferences (in teh Mac System) to allow for choosing an active corner to bring SideNote forward. Keep up the great work. This is a cinch for contraibution-ware. Let me know whre I can send a few bucks.

Snapz Pro X | Apr 27 2006 |
IAMDORIAN Over the last two years this application has worked ever time for me; this on a Dual 1.8 MHz PCI-X PowerMac. However, video capture is processor intensive and likely taps into the hardware, so some machines could have trouble, I suppose. However, the fact that this app is not YET compatible with the Intel models is quite disheartening. There is (as of yet) no comparable program, so it's an old case of supply and demand. Some stiff competition would be a good thing about now! Note: When SnapZ Pro works, it works well. However, a movie/screencap program should be about a $10.00-$20.00 piece of shareware. The pricing has always put me off a bit. P.S. Apple SHOULD buy this thing from the developer and include this on every Mac...! (Version 2.0.2)

IAMDORIAN Well, that was fast! The developer quickly corrected the small crash issue and even responded directly to me. This is the nice thing about a program with a concerned developer (staff). Now...if only this could be made more tailored to videographers\photographers, nothing is mnore crucial to ourdoor shots (with the exception of the weather) than the availablilty and nature of the ambient light. knowing the whens and where of sun and moon can be very very important. If this application could be made portable (and this goes double if it can be linked to an iPod or other handheld device) this would quickly become many shooter's most beloived application. Keep up the good work, and I'll be watching closely to see if this product takes such a professional direction. I can see a PRO version in your future! : )

IAMDORIAN A great software package, although it did lock up more than once - when I tried to delete place sets - under OSX 4.5 on a 1.86 GHz Dual PowerPC (in all fairness, it could be my OS; I've messed it up and need to reinstall). What this package needs to REALLY shine, is a advanced time feature, for future projections of moon/sun/daylight/twilight/night data. As it stands - in version 1.1 - the time is fixed to concurrent times across the globe. Adding a prediction clock would alllow, for example, a photographer/videographer (yours truly) to plan shots in advance. On a more pedestrian level, fireworks shows, barbeques and other outdoor activities, including moon gazing and meteor shower watching, could be preplanned, without the need for mastery of a product like Starry Night (nor the expense). Adding this feature certainly would mean a beefing up of lookup tables, but i'd imagine that this is not beyond the scope of the eprogrammer, nor would it be to difficult to implement this feature in the existing package. ADD THIS and I can think of a dozen people TODAY that would pay the $20.00 price to use this in planning. Additionally, a little tweaking of the interface might be in order. It's OK, but not as slick as it might be. 3D icons, some 3D treatments of panel edges, and smaller flags, for example, might be in order. Even adding a 3D look to the moon (and adding sun) symbols might be a nice touch. (The $6.95 widget "VelaClock"- based on this app - is slicker looking.) Viva la celestial! Bravo (et CIAO)!

IAMDORIAN This was may favorite renamer...until now. So far it scrambled several large sets of files intended for time-lapse sequences. Yikes! Problem is, this program does not allow for sort-renaming based on EXIF data (in this case, camera creation dates). This program was fast and flexible, and FREE. Now, however, under OSX 10.4.3/10.4.4+ (running on a Dual PowerPC PowerMac, it appears broken. To correct the imstakes this program produced, I had to shell out money for ABFR v7. Oh well. I suppose if I'd sent a request out with a donation, perhaps the developer would have fixed the problem, and perhaps even included the EXIF sort option? Thanks to the developer for this great program (fast too!), and I hope it gets fixed soon. (Version 3.0)

IAMDORIAN Just a note to the developer on pricing. With respect to all the issues that most of us who've been around this business understand only too well (cost of support, upgrades, etc), this software still needs to be priced at about $25, not $40. I personally own perhaps 200 applications (no kidding!), but I tend to buy things because of need but based on price. Not cheap, but an idealist. I do tend to boycott overpriced packages when I can afford to. This is (sadly) one of those I do. Bt then, I am olny a part-time musician, and not having this does not mean my mussical life comes to an abrupt end. If your package was perhaps $25, you'd likely increase sales by 2-3 times. Additionally, it's likely that a price reduction would put an end to people passing around SNs and hacking you, providing additional revenue. As has been mentioned, the entire iLife suite is only $80 now. People tend to judge prices based on current paradigms. It's been said before, but that doesn't mean it doesn't need to be said yet again. : ) A very useful product, and it works. I'll be waiting with my plastic in hand! Keep up that Mac development...we love ya! (Version 2.7.4)

Yum | Feb 28 2005 |
IAMDORIAN I do like this interface. Thre is an intuitive feel to it. However, there are now several redipe programs out there, and only one (so far) will soon be introducing a deeper database larder (for professional cooks, food storage/planning) feature. The program I am referring to (won't mention the name here, in respect for this developer) already has a shopping list feature. The larder feature push whatever app first offers it into the limelight, in terms of feature sets. I'd like to support this package, as it has the most tastiest GUI...but... : ) Watching Yum closely for any announcement. DEVELOPER HINT: There are MANY people who'd like such a combination of features. (Version 0.6.5)

Apple Mac OS X Updater | Feb 24 2005 |
The latest Security update did NOT fix the random fan spin-ups that began under this update. I have a PCI-X slot Dual 1.8GHz G5 that now insists on spinning up the fan - at high velocity - randomly. There does sem to be some link to various drive operations, but no pattern has yet emerged. AS anoying as this is, it doesn't seem to afect operations...or does it? Running under OSX 10.3.8 + the latest Sec Update (Java Fix), trying to quit our of Adobe Acrobat v6.0x, with Safari in the background, caused the first KERNEL PANIC I've seen since early versions of OSX 10.1x. What gives Apple? 1 star off for the Fan problems (I hope this is fixed pronto), but I have to take 2 stars off for the Kernel Panic. If I soon see some teeny-weeny disclaimer (in 3-point type) somewhere on Adobe's site stating that version 6.03 Adobe Acrobat is NOT compatible with Apple's OSX version 10.3.8, then I guess I'll owe an apollogy to Apple. Either wa If this is Adobe's fault then I apollogize...it's a bummer. :::sigh:::: (Version 10.3.8)

DORIAN Same experience...quits before it can bring up more than the "trial period expired" window (OSX v10.3.6). I had originally installed it many months ago, in order to try it, and never did. Tried throwing out any PTMac files I could find to get it to boot, to no avail. The RealViz 3.52 Stitcher version I bought only 7 months ago (and also never used) is not working properly under OSX 10.3.6 (let alone 10.3.7). Upgrading Stitcher - just to get it to work - would cost $200. So I thought perhaps I could gove this a shot. However, I am reticent to shell out $50 to see if this version of the PTMac program works with Panther 10.3.7. Time to patch up a new version people. One of the most stable of the (QT)VR programs was VR Worx (older v.2.1), but it didn't do conversions from already stitched wid format files. SIGH:::VR should be easier than it is...
