IGAUCHO XMind is a pretty darn good mind mapping app in terms of features. I got the last version from a MU Promo. The UI may not be the greatest and it is Java based, but it allows you to do a lot with great flexibility. I'm amazed how it went from $299 retail to only $50 a year for the Pro version. The basic version is free now. Good job! That was one of my major complaints about it. It's certainly worth it for people interested in organizing their ideas with mind maps. (Version 3.0)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL I'm hanging out for this too, unfortunately it doesn't look like it's there yet. From the FAQ: Although the manual claims 64-bit support for VirtualBox 2.0.0 this feature is not yet available for Mac OS X hosts. Nothing I could see in the change log suggests that's changed in later versions either. Still, for 32 bit guests it easily does everything I need. (Version 2.0.4)

Microsoft Office 2008 | Apr 22 2008 |
IGAUCHO I just picked up Office 2008 and I'm fairly impressed with it. I don't use macros. So, that part is a non-issue for me. Aside from that the UI is a breath of fresh air. It finally feels like a true OS X suite of applications instead of a remnant from the OS 9 days. It's clean and not cluttered. Word has some nice features that I will be using a lot such as the tools for managing references and built-in dictionary and thesaurus. The MacBU has done a good job with those things. On the downside, the performance is quite poor as many people have said in the Mac community. The applications are very slow to launch. Fortunately, once you get past that point they work quite well. I tried to switch over from Mail/iCal/Address Book for a couple days just to see how it would work out for me, but found the inability to import calendars from iCal to be frustrating. This was a major issue for me in Office 2004 as well. I don't want to start from scratch as I have a lot of calendars invested in iCal. Also, you can't sync categories over .Mac, just Entourage notes. You can also sync contacts with Address Book and calendars created in Entourage back to iCal. Unfortunately, this version of Entourage is not much of a leap forward from its predecessor in most regards apart from the UI and addition of the My Day app. I didn't get a chance to try out PowerPoint or Excel too much since I don't use those types of apps very much. The new PP looks nice and is cleaner than the previous version. I find it odd that Excel places the formula field above the app window instead of within it below the toolbar. I think after a few performance tweaks this will be a great suite and a welcome upgrade for people or businesses who rely on Office for their day to day work. (Version 12.0.1)

For example, ratings on Amazon do not work. When you try to rate something, you are just given a blank page. This issue has been around for as long as I can remember. I truly fail to understand why Omni (who has some of the most talented programmers in the industry) can't get it working. IGAUCHO I just installed this new version and must say that it's a joy to use. The previous release had a rather awkward interface (double drawers??), but this one is very clean and as easy to use as the Finder. This is a really unique app in that it satisfies several uses instead of just the typical FTP/SFTP with its implementation of WebDAV, S3, etc. This app has completely replaced the Finder for moving files to my other Macs and my .Mac account. I really like that I can use QuickLook with it as well. This is one app that I hope takes the competition by storm. The developers of Transmit, Fetch, CaptainFTP, and YummyFTP can really learn a couple things here. Unfortunately, it is missing some advanced features that FTP power users will probably want. With all the MU Promo people raving about XMind, I've decided to try both out. Currently I think I am leaning towards MindManager since it was written from the ground up for the Mac (by a Windows developer no less!) and it's not Java based. I'd rather support a developer who takes the time to make a true Mac application instead of just tweaking it to run on another platform. Just idling XMind was taking up 1.3 gb of virtual memory! IGAUCHO TaskPaper is an excellent alternative to the new swarm of GTD apps hitting the Mac market. There are some great choices out there. Personally I have been an iGTD user since the start, but this one really is simple and allows you to organize your tasks quickly and get started on them. It helps to avoid the hassle of over-organizing things. TaskPaper is really in its infancy still but it is backed by a very responsive developer who is burning the midnight oil to make it better constantly. Version 1.1 is supposed to bring some huge improvements and new features. Can't wait! There are a couple features that it is missing that would make it an absolute top contender (most are echoed on the Hog Bay forums). It really needs sub-tasks, drag and drop reordering of tasks and projects, iCal syncing, and .Mac support. Aside from those few shortcomings, I enjoy using it. (Version 1.0.3)

IGAUCHO This update brings some much needed improvements. I really like having the application icons in the Dock now (somewhat similar to Parallels and VMWare Fusion), and it's now so much faster at launching apps! Good job guys! Crossover may not support every Windows application out there, but those that it does support work really well. Much cheaper than buying a copy of Windows if you just have a handful of applications you need to use. It's also easier than trying to setup and install WINE yourself in the Terminal. Now if only there were an option to turn off that annoying window asking you if you want to install applications... You close it and it comes back when you switch back to Crossover from another application. (Version 6.2)

IGAUCHO Geez, Orion. If you don't care about VMWare Fusion, why take the time to go to the VMWare product page to make the remark? Both Parallels and Fusion are great products. However, I have found Fusion to have better performance. IGAUCHO Slow? What kind of machine do you have? I've been using Cocktail ever since I had a G3. Currently I have G5 and Core 2 Duo systems and it's much faster than Onyx. It's faster to get to the tool you want to use and it performs its tasks very quickly. With Onyx I have to wait a couple seconds just for it to load the pane with the tool I want and it's slower at performing tasks. I like Onyx as well and feel that it's an excellent system utility, but for me Cocktail is just a tool I can always rely on. Faster and much more intuitive. (Version 3.8.1)

IGAUCHO Price has changed to $24. There's a new beta out that lets you download specific files from torrents in addition to several other improvements. Now there are NovaMind Express ($49), NovaMind Pro ($149), and NovaMind Platinum ($249). I wanted to buy NovaMind several months ago but even with the educational pricing, it was still too expensive for me. I ended up going with OmniGraffle since it was cheaper and more or less gets the job done. Obviously it's not a standalone mind mapping application. Maybe I will look into getting NovaMind Express since it is quite affordable (it costs just as much as the educational pricing for OmniGraffle). I just hope the interface has gotten an overhaul. Version 3 had some excellent features but it was a little difficult to figure out. (Version 4.0.4)

IGAUCHO Well, I finally got my license for Exces although I had to go to a special link for Macheist buyers to finally get it. So, I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised that Exces works just as advertised after all the negative reviews. I created a vault for a few files and locked it and opened it again without a hitch. It's very easy to use. Just create a new vault and it opens on your desktop ready for you to through your files in. I must be honest though. I would not rely on this application for sensitive data. As I feared, it does use it's own proprietary file format. Forget sending documents to people unless they also have a copy of it. I must emphasize my earlier concern, what happens if these guys go out of business? This is not a very well known application (yet)nor is it widely used. What happens to your sensitive files should something break and these guys are no longer around? Do yourself a favor and stick to Disk Utility. I think we can count on support from Apple for years to come for encrypted disk images. (Version 1.1.3)

IGAUCHO I'm also confused by all the complaints about crashes. I use Xtorrent fairly regularly (maybe about once or twice a week) and I have never had a crash yet. Not even on the last beta versions when I first decided to try it out. It almost makes me wonder what people are doing to their Macs since I have experienced none of those problems on either of my machines (PPC and Intel). I will admit though that I did lose some torrents when upgrading once or twice to a new version. Sure it was an inconvenience. You had to take a screenshot of the MacHeist page showing your serial number and email it to them with the serial number and your email address typed out. I agree with some other reviewers that Cha-Ching showed more promise during it's beta stage than the final product. Bugs are being addressed by Midnight Apps at a reasonable pace, but it's clearly a fact that it was released before it was ready. I give it till 2.0 before it's ready to be used by a large number of people. In the meantime I highly recommend Splasm's CheckBook. (Version 1.0.3)
