HOWIEC  Definitely a good tool for anyone who needs to deal with sound files but needs something a little more robust (and frankly, easy to use) than GarageBand. Amadeus even gives you tools like spectrograms so that it's possible to do limited linguistic research with it.

HOWIEC  A mixed-bag utility program, for sure. The interface is very very slow even on a MacBook Core2Duo with 2GB of RAM. The tests it runs vary from stuff you can pretty much do yourself for free (example: you can check your RAM modules for free with Rember), to directory checking and disk defragging. I haven't had to rescue my files or my disk yet, so I can't vouch for the effectiveness of the safety and recovery features. I can tell you that I rebooted my computer off of the emergency DVD, and the system hung when I tried to restart using the Apple menu, and accidentally moused over "Locations". I don't know if this is a FTFF issue, or whether it's TechTool, but it was disconcerting to have to do a hard restart using the keyboard combo from within a utility program.

OPALDRAKE  To reboot into the startup volume from either the eDrive or the DVD, simply go up to Techtool Pro and click Quit. This will automatically bring up a dialog box; click on Restart.

HOWIEC  Very powerful front-end for managing your eBay auctions, but suffers from a confusing UI and a number of uninspired (and ugly) themes. If you're a hard core eBay seller, this program could come in very handy, but otherwise, I think the learning curve is too steep to justify the price.

BRIONYBOB  The UI can be confusing at first, but the themes are great.

HOWIEC  I hope you have a 10k RPM hard drive, lots of RAM, and a really pressing need to see a visual timeline of your websurfing, because otherwise this program is a big disappointment. It's slow, takes up a lot of space on your drive, and has a confusing UI. I could see this as a great tool for admins if it had some sort of VPN tools built in, because then you could visually monitor web surfing on a host of computers, and that would be useful for corporate and school IT departments. For the average user, however, I simply don't see the purpose. Just use your history menu!

HOWIEC  Slow interface, and not as many features as Onyx or some of the other freeware utilities, but it has a couple of things the others don't, and hopefully is more stable because it's a more mature release.

IGAUCHO  Slow? What kind of machine do you have? I've been using Cocktail ever since I had a G3. Currently I have G5 and Core 2 Duo systems and it's much faster than Onyx. It's faster to get to the tool you want to use and it performs its tasks very quickly. With Onyx I have to wait a couple seconds just for it to load the pane with the tool I want and it's slower at performing tasks. I like Onyx as well and feel that it's an excellent system utility, but for me Cocktail is just a tool I can always rely on. Faster and much more intuitive.

PhotoPresenter

HOWIEC  For $8 it's hard to argue with the value here. Basically, this program adds a few animated slideshow themes that you don't get with iPhoto or iDVD. Nothing really groundbreaking, but if you want a bit of extra choice in how your photo slideshows look, then it's worth the price of admission.

SIMON BOVET  Note that PhotoPresenter also plays (and export) movies during slideshows -- something that neither iPhoto nor iDVD do. A little something more that might be useful for all those movies that people record with their digital camera... :-)

HOWIEC  Does the same thing as DiskUtility, except it adds a useless animation. All this program does is create sparse disk images using Apple's built-in encryption. It even crashed the first time I tried to use it!

WriteRoom

HOWIEC  You can accomplish the same result by expanding a window in TextEdit to take over the entire screen. Additionally, the preferences are confusing, and it'd be nicer if you could have a glossy look, because the display looks awful with flat colors.

WriteRoom
Jul 22 2007

JESSE GROSJEAN  WriteRoom has thousands of happy users. Numerous people have written in saying that it changes the way that they write. I've even had people say that they switched from PC to Mac just so they could use WriteRoom.

So why are you wasting, your time, my time, and everyone else's time by trashing my app for no good reason? I'm an independent mac developer and I rely on word of mouth. If someone like you goes around trashing my apps then a small Mac developer like me can disappear.

"You can accomplish the same result by expanding a window in TextEdit to take over the entire screen"

That's not true for a lot of reasons. For one just try it. If you make Text Edit full screen then notice how there are no margins? For most people text that spans across the entire screen isn't much fun to read or write, and that's why WriteRoom will block out your entire screen, but presents your text in a nice easily readable column in the center of your screen.

It's fine to say that you don't find WriteRoom useful yourself. And yes the preferences could be simpler, but Writers want to control over every aspect of their writing environment. And so I've decided to error on the side of to many preferences so people work like they want instead of too few so they can't.

I'd appreciate if you would delete your comment or at least edit it so that there is some logic to it. At this point You've given WriteRoom 1 star. The worst possible rating and that's not fair.

Thanks,

Jesse

HENRIKTEKNIK  Jesse:

WriteRoom is a geourgeous and cleaver app. Don't let it get to you. Some people are completely lacking in their social abilities, and yet, some people likes it when they can trash something down, often times because they are unable to construct anything of their own.

Keep doing what you're great at (in this case, coding). Hog Bay Software has a very high credibility in my book, and myopics sending in disrespectful, shorthanded comments which are lacking any constructive intent whatsoever, is just something that happens to any developer, no matter how much effort they put into their craft; sadly so, it comes with the territory... :(

WriteRoom for the win!

XYPHER  Nothing wrong with freedom of speech. Anyway, I don't think his comment will have a negative effect on anyone planning to or currently using WriteRoom. You should have more faith in the program you've created. Beauty is the eye of the beholder. Personally speaking, I like the application and I'm not just saying that.

It's quite a novel experience using it. Thank you for taking the time to write it.
