Bookit
Oct 29 2009
*****

HOMER1  I have been using Bookit for a few years now. Briefly tried Bookdog but found it confusing at best. I'm sure it works well, I just didn't care for the interface.

Due to a HD failure I lost most of my shareware registrations, Bookit included. Earlier this week I sent an email to the developer and yesterday morning in my in-box was a very courteous response with my registration code included. I installed the software under Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and it functions perfectly.

Granted, I only use Safari and Camino as my browsers so the lack of Firefox support does not affect me. Still, given that these are shareware developers, who have outside jobs to actually be able to pay their bills, I think some of the recent reviews/comments of this software are a bit out of line. Just my two cents.

CrashPlan
Oct 22 2009

HOMER1  Desker - the email address is support@crashplan.com. I've always received a prompt response.

This morning I too had the "can't connect" error. Sent an email and was told that they were having server issues but expected to resolve within a few hours, worst case 24 hours. It happens.

Prior to this morning I have been hammering their servers with upload after upload, and then downloading files to make sure that all was well with the transfers in both directions. So for, not a glitch.

Contact their support folks. I'm sure you'll receive a response back clarifying any issues you may be having.

CrashPlan

HOMER1  I've been trying out on-line backup programs for months now. Dropbox looked promising but the issues are many, and security (read encryption!) does not exist.

Tried CrashPlan based on the very favorable review in MacWorld and I'll tell you it's perfect. Not only does the program perform, I've had questions that I emailed the support contact about, and received an email response back within 24 hours in all three cases (and I'm not even a "paid" user yet).

I'll be signing up tonight and I recommend that anyone looking for an easy, Mac like, secure on-line backup program give CrashPlan a serious look.

CrashPlan

DESKER  My experience has been the exact opposite.

I, too, was enticed into trying CrashPlan by the reviews. I have used a couple of other backups, but I thought, since the opinions about CrashPlan were so glowing that I'd give it a shot. The software was at least easy to understand and use (as opposed to SpiderOak).

So two days ago I started uploading all my photo files in the hope of getting them all up there before my free month ran out. Then I planned to sign up for a year to give it a full test.

But, today my connection was dropped four separate time for up to two hours at a stretch, something I've never had happen with either JungleDisk or SpiderOak (which seems to get a terrifically bad press, probably because its software is so confusing to use.

At the moment I can't connect in any way and the notation beside CrashPlan Central says "destination unavailable." My last connection was 2.4 hours ago.

And I'd love to know how you get in touch with anyone at CrashPlan support without having paid for a year in advance. Perhaps I'm just not seeing it but I can't find any way to get in touch with them to tell them that I'd love to use their service, but I can't.

DESKER  Just to modify what I said previously, I have sent an e-mail to CrashPlan support (I just wasn't looking carefully enough) and I'm waiting for a reply.

I'm still hoping everything works out.

DESKER  I have now heard back from CrashPlan and the response was quick (within a couple of hours). So that's good and a major point in the company's favor and makes me optimistic.

They say my troubles probably are on my end, likely a firewall acting up. This has not been the case with my other two backup providers, but you never know.

If my problems now cease (in fact I had a spontaneous reconnection without doing anything) and things stay stable over the next few days I will be happy to return to give CrashPlan a glowing five star review and sign on for actual dollars with them.

AppDelete
Oct 11 2009
*****

HOMER1  I'm a previous user of the older AppDelete who at some point in the past switched over to AppCleaner. I’ve now been trying out this updated utility (using the “Search” function so as not to actually delete any applications) against AppCleaner and I did find that on the application Bento as well as a few others it (AppDelete) seems to find at least one additional file (seem to be the "cache" files) beyond what AppCleaner finds, which I would think makes for a more complet deletion.

Developer is very responsive to emails and continues to update this application. Works perfectly under Snow Leopard 10.6.1.

iList Data
Oct 1 2009
*****

HOMER1  I'm a long time user of Filemaker Pro (last version installed was 6.0v4) and a two time buyer of Bento. Version 1, and yes, I'm one of those folks that got burnt on the version 2 upgrade! Never again!

Took me a while to find iList. Downloaded the trial, installed it, and have to say, it more than lives up to my expectations. Purchased the full version that very day.

This is a true Mac OS database! Not just a list maker like Bento. If you have any experience with databases you'll fly through setting yours up with iList.

If you're in need of a straight forward, easy to understand, Mac OS user interface database, you owe it to yourself to try iList. I give it the highest recommendation.

HOMER1  I downloaded this application last night to try it out, had issues with Moneydance not re-locking it's data folder upon an application quit . . and the developer resolved the issue overnight. Now that's service!

I registered immediately. Thank you to the developer for a wonderful program and an incredible response to issues.
