HMURCHISON  Misha

I do have Hazel would could easily take the contents of a MUD folder and delete them. I just don't know how feasible it would be for a future version of Desktop to do natively. Maybe a simple "Folder Action" or something. I'll tinker around later with Automator and see if there are other ways. It's not a biggie ..just housekeeping stuff.

HMURCHISON  Well done MU.

I've enjoyed the Beta test and will be purchasing the final version. The $20 annual fee is very palatable. I find that having MU pull the updates from my group of installed apps makes things go smoothly and I still check macupdate.com for review and updates on apps I don't own.

I've seen the stability and featureset improve and I've had few problems with the app recently. I do have one suggestion. When you download updates they are placed in a folder (often your Downloads folder) and they can take up a lot of space. In a future I'd suggest that you create a specific MUD folder that autodeletes files after a specific timeframe set by the user. This way I can keep the downloaded file long enough to ensure everything is working and them delete the files.

I've tried many of the free apps and they just don't give me the accuracy or featureset of MUD. I can afford the $1.67 monthly to easily keep my apps updated.

MISHA  Thanks for the feedback -- auto-deletion of updates is a good idea. If you want to tidy up your MUD downloads a bit, from Preferences choose "Keep Downloads Sorted By Date" and that will create a new folder in your Downloads folder each day MUD runs and will save all your downloads inside (making it easier to delete MUD downloads).

You can also specify a different Downloads folder, of course.

LicenseKeeper
Aug 25 2009

HMURCHISON  Yes but what about attaching license files and scraping emails for serial numbers? What about loading csv or appshelf files when you buy a bundle. A basic database would work as well so would creating a spreadsheet and tracking your serials this way but the thing that's missing here is "ease of use". I use a central license tracking app because it makes it trivial to store my license in a single function low resource app.

If I have to fire up Bento (with its corollary resource hit) every time I want to add, modify a license that doesn't make much sense to me. Bento is a great app that I plan to purchase but it doesn't make my job easier with regard to tracking my licenses. In License Keeper I have value added features that go behind what a basic database app like Bento offers and time being the one commodity you never get any more of I like the ease and time saving.

Pantry
Jul 16 2009

HMURCHISON  It is of course not a silly statement but a factual one when view from the context of pricing. I showed my girlfriend Pantry(she LOVES shopping for food) and she was not interested in the least. The context of my statement is about the core market. You are correct that a small % of users want Photoshop and thus Photoshop is hundreds of dollars. Now if Adobe could sell Photoshop to say 3 billion people then I'm sure they'd be amenable to Photoshop at $75 or so but that's simply not the case.

Pantry for the iPhone is worth $2.99 to me though the market "is" in fact limited for people wanting to track their food via computer. Will the developer really gain a three-fold increase in sales by lowering the price to $.99?

I think you took "finite" a bit more pejoratively than my posting suggests.

Mailplane
Jul 10 2009

HMURCHISON  Gmail isn't all that efficient if you want to switch multiple accounts or attach files with any kind of speed. I attach files all day at work and would really be hampered by the slow file attachment process for gmail. Anyone with more than one gmail account instantly sees the benefit of being able to switch accounts with ease. When you say "it does the job" you really mean "it does the job for me" Those people who want more functionality and integration from their email client may not find that Gmail does the job.

Mailplane
Jul 10 2009

HMURCHISON  So basically you're saying price is your primary concern? That's fine but to others $24.95 probably doesn't really "break the bank". I know there's a contingent of computer users that love free stuff but there are also many that love simplicity. That's why we compute with Macs even though they come with a pricing premium for given specs. If Gmail keeps a person very happy then the standard web version is going to be fine but some people want ehancements with their OS and the ability to switch between multiple accounts and the $24.95 is a pittance to some for the benefits of desktop integration. The value is perceived differently by different folks. Some free is most key and others productivity/ease is most key.

Mailplane
Jul 9 2009

HMURCHISON  I guess that's for each person to decide regarding the value they place on Mailplane. I tend to prefer working "outside" of a browser and having native app controls. $25 dollars to "ehance" a free tool like Gmail sounds expensive but for me I'll likely purchase the family pack for $15 more that gives me Mailplane on up to 5 Macs for $40. That's 8 bucks a computer and a different value prop. Plus I think that the developer is going to be able to link Mailplane up with more apps like he's done with Omnifocus.

LicenseKeeper
Jul 9 2009

HMURCHISON  I find that LicenseKeeper grabs the serial number about 75 % of the time correctly. The only problems that I find are when you have say an email from a bundle that contains a plethora of serial numbers. I don't expect a $20 app to have the kind of Artificial Intelligence to accurately pull out the correct serial number in this case.

Sure I could put all my licenses in a spreadsheet or even on a pad of paper for free but LK allows me to to agregate not just serial numbers but whatever files I want to attach be they PDF or a custom license file or more. I can't do as easily with a spreadsheet or text file. I also love the ability to refresh the apps list and pull the latest version numbers.

HMURCHISON  While the lack of a family plan (multi computer license at discount) is bothersome I will give Ergonis credit on their willingness to distribute Typinator via the many Mac software bundles. This month I'll be picking up my 3rd license of Typinator and I've not paid full price once so I doubt that I'll be too miffed about upgrade pricing and there's nothing stopping version 4.0 from moving to a multi computer license. Dictate
Jun 18 2009

HMURCHISON  I used to do training on Dragon NaturallySpeaking (primarily the Medical version which often floored Doctors) and the Professional version.

I'm itching to get back to dictating. With a good microphone and properly enuciated speech it's easy to hit %80 + accuracy right out the box and % 90 if you're experienienced in how dictation engines like vocal cadence.

It's great that we have the DNS engine now powering the software so where we need to see rapid evolution is in the supporting cast. I noticed that Dictate is Intel only so I'd expect that it would be wise to move the software to Snow Leopard since the developer has no PPC users. I've always felt that dictation software could really benefit from judicious use of threading for performance and I hope MacSpeech is looking to leverage Grand Central Dispatch to good effect as well as 64-bit.

Also further leveraging Applescript, Automator and the newly improved services would increase the power of Dictate immensely IMO. Most people think that these programs are strictly about voice to text but the real power is in tying automated procedures to vocal commands. If you're a developer and you get this down you will have customers for life.

LicenseKeeper
Jun 6 2009
****.

HMURCHISON  I really like LicenseKeeper. I think the ease in being able to add not only apps but Pref panes, widgets plugins and more makes it the premier license tracking repository on the market. I've had excellent stability with the application.

However with that said in mind the developer missed a BIG opportunity to align with bundles like MacHeist and Mupromo and more to deliver easy importation of license data? I'm afraid that AppShelf is going to overtake LicenseKeepr, not because they have a better product..they don't but because they have outfoxed the fox.

I've docked LK a star because I think they should be finding ways to make it easy to import these bundled apps. I've cringed in the past dealing with a multitude of different license schemes and fastidiously importing my data.

Throw us a bone here. At the least add Appshelf license file import and save us the grief. Thanks!

Multiplex
May 28 2009

HMURCHISON  Actually those of us who are older remember the days when the local Movie Theather was called a Multiplex Theater because Theaters initially spawned as single screen houses and evolved into multiple screens hence the name Multiplex cinema. Perhaps it's a generational thing.

Multiplex doesn't encode your files that's what RipIt's for. RipIt encodes the DVD as a .dvdmedia file (which is not compressed) and plays back with the standard DVD player app in OS X. Anyone using the RipIt/Multiplex combo will have easy to playback media that works just like the DVD.

Multiplex doesn't aim to be like Plex. Their website www.multiplexapp.com clearly shows the next 1.1 features are all aimed at movies. They aren't working on photo or music support. If you need that then get Plex or Boxee. If you want to rip your DVD and playback the files easily then Multiplex is a good start.

I'd rather a vendor work on making video playback easy and trouble free rather than attempt to be a jack of all trades. I don't think a * star is merited here as you clearly haven't had the application long enough and came in with preconceived ideals about what it "should" be like.

Leap
May 21 2009

HMURCHISON  $29 for the Leap2 upgrade along with Deep, Yep and Fresh is a bonafied STEAL. I too got on the bandwagon with the bundle and Ironic gives me the same deal that someone gets if they paid $59. For that I will not only buy my $29 upgrade but I will buy another full bundle for $69 which contains Leap, Yep, Fresh and Deep. How they can offer that pricing is beyond my knowledge but these products are labor of loves. The developers really want to improve document management and the suite of apps they are working on would cost hundreds from any other company. Excellent value...looking forward to Yep 2 to restore some sanity to my PDF management.

Dictate
May 14 2009

HMURCHISON  From their website

"MacSpeech, Inc. today announced the immediate availability of MacSpeech Dictate 1.5, the exciting first upgrade to the premier speech recognition solution for the Macintosh, now introducing a new Vocabulary Editor, new English profile options, enhanced accuracy and much more. MacSpeech Dictate 1.5 requires Mac OS X 10.5.6 or higher and is available today for US$199 as a new purchase, or US$54.95 for current owners of MacSpeech Dictate.

"

The previous Vocab editor was NOT up to snuff. This is great news they're also claiming that accuracy has improved %20. It may be time for me to jump in provided to Vocab editor is solid. I can't overstate how critical it is to manage your custom vocab properly.

Pantry
May 11 2009

HMURCHISON  I've been perusing the other "grocery list" apps and I'm thinking that I really like having a desktop client to sync with. I don't have an iPhone or iPod Touch yet but that's coming in June but I can take the time right now to make the appropriate categories and input my panty items. I also agree $2.99 is a fair price. It's easy to assume that lowering the price of an app will generate more revenue (and usually it will) however business thrive off of profits and there are a finite amount of people that want to track their food at this level. It's important to balance the size of the market overall for this app and come to a price that keeps both the end user and developer happy. Pantry seems to be in the sweet spot. Keep up the good work.

HMURCHISON  Price will go up? Let me add a little reality here.

Coda will be 2.0 this year. They already have many users. Espresso just went out to 80 thousand purchasers of MacHeist.

I've got iWeb, RapidWeaver, Espresso and Sandvox on my computer alone so web dev options aren't a problem.

Flux 2 may be a great app but don't expect those of us who have a handful of web dev programs to lay down at Flux's feet. We've got options.

I'm hoping that Flux can bring something new to the table but they're going to need to get out there. They should be talking to MUPROMO about getting Flux 2 in the next bundle. You gotta get marketshare before you can even think about raising prices.

Include the HDMI logo on the front of your device the per port cost drops to $.04. Why? Because it's an easy way to generate awareness. In essence you are co-marketing with the licensor. Why not be proud of the quality of your presentations due to the fact that BoinxTV works? They're saving you $300 to do this co-marketing and that's significant IMO. I hate advertising as much as the next person but if I proudly use a tool I don't mind people knowing what I'm using especially if I'm getting said product for less than half the cost.

LicenseKeeper
Apr 2 2009

HMURCHISON  I hate tracking license info. It's so non-standard. Most developers have serial numbers but some have license files and other methods for piracy prevention. Keeping up with them can be difficult. I know it's possible to simply place the serials in a spreadsheet but I just wanted a more "centric" program for licensing. Initially I balked at the $19.95 price but after using it and adding a bunch of apps I'm not missing that money but i've gained a lot of usefulness. Now when there's a software bundle I immediately add the apps to LK and attach the email or license files to the respective app[s]. It couldn't be more simple. I like that everything you need is there. Automatic email scanning (though it tends to pull the first serial even if there are more in the email) and support for pref panes and more.

I guess the next task will be how well I can transport my licenses. I'm planning an upgrade to my Mac and I may do a fresh install and reinstallation of all 3rd party apps.

So far so good.

JOHN QUINN  When I formatted my hard drive and re-installed all my apps, I lost almost all of the license information I had stored in License Keeper. Before formatting, I updated License Keeper and exported the content. However, when I tried to import it again later, it only imported part of the information - many serials were missing and so were all the application icons. I can't remember the version of License Keeper this happened with, must have been about ten months ago. I am sure this issue has been taken care of by now. I myself am reluctant to use this app since, however, and rather try to store my license information in more conventional old school ways. What I am saying is that simply beware of the possibility of losing your information and maybe create an external copy of your licenses before formatting just in case.

I initially thought Tags was too expensive but as a tagging front end and search tool it's simplistic but amazingly powerful. In most apps you just hit the keyboard shortcut and Tags has the item front facing ready to be tagged.

With a Tags front end, Default Folder X with OpenMeta for tagging on Open/Save and the OpenMeta stuff from Ironic Software it's becoming easy to tag and manage tags across your system.

I'm impressed with this app and how it fits into the nextgen metadata workflow in OS X.

This is why Macupdate has a pull down menu that contains "comment" amongst the many choices. While your frustration may be palpable it's generally more constructive to comment rather than levy out some sort of punitive star rating as punishment for a rather subjective grievance.

IntelliScanner Software
Mar 20 2009

HMURCHISON  I use Delicious Library and thus I'm not interesed in Intelliscaner's software. I've heard they aren't too jazzed

about supporting other software library. Seeing as how their

scanner hardware is OEM from other vendors and these vendors sell

cheaper I'm likely to avoid Intelliscanner altogether. The Microvision scanner looks good. I'll probably go with that.

Default Folder X
Mar 19 2009

HMURCHISON  BEIGE

I'm checking out the beta right now before I buy. Isn't there a preference to exclude apps that give you problems? I think that in the past DFX had a conflict with Adobe Open/Save panels as well which isn't a surprise because I believe the roll their own custom panels. The problem is likely fixed but for troublesome apps it may be something work checking into any blacklisting features. Here's a blurb

http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/features.html

"Exclude applications. Exclude Default Folder X from some applications."

Mailplane
Mar 9 2009

HMURCHISON  Macsolu - Mailplane has a family pack for 39 bucks so it becomes a pretty good deal for someone with multiple Macs. I'm thinking about getting the family license because even for just three Macs it's 13 dollars and that's not half bad. There is value IMO in having more desktop app functionality.

HMURCHISON  Nice new UI haven't tried the features yet but so far I like what I see. Also there were no upgrade issues for me and I bought this through the Macupdate Bundle. Kudos to the the devs for not treating bundle purchasers as second class citizens. I'm glad I could support your efforts financially. I'll toss a review up after i've kicked the tires more.

DTEARE  We are actively working on version 3 and it is looking pretty darn good. It is taking a lot of time to get things polished, so it will be a while longer before it is released. Because of this, we keep going back and updating version 2.x when we have important improvements.

I don't want to give a date as they tend to always be wrong, but I can say you should visit our forum periodically as we plan on releasing the 3.0 Alpha version there first.

By the way, because 3.0 is coming "soon", we changed the online store so new purchases will get a free upgrade to 3.0. This change was made on Jan 30th, so any purchase made after that date will get the 3.0 upgrade for free.

Cheers!

Prospects
Jan 22 2009

HMURCHISON  Interesting. I wasn't aware of this app. It looks interesting. I took a read of the developers blog http://blog.motimotion.com/ and found that he is communicative with his customers. The UI looks clean (which is tougher than it sounds) and right now this is a part time endeavour. I think with financial applications that are still in their infancy you have to approach them with caution. Expecting them to offer every feature or operate like a well oiled machine is probably unlikely. This appears to be an app to watch. I bet by version 2.0 many people will be impressed with the app. As of right now get in while it's good $30 for a financial app is chickenfeed IMO.

Scrivener
Jan 19 2009

HMURCHISON  While I don't expect the Developer to participate in MUPROMO or a bundle deal I tend to disagree with the notion that said bundles are not beneficial. I have not seen any research that conclusively proves nor disproves that these bundles effect.

For some developers they are beneficial and for some they are not. The bundles must be met with realistic expectations. Of course the influx isn't going to be sustained, users are demoing the apps and finding out which apps will remain in their computing workflow. The payoff for the developer is during the next paid upgrade and how many of these new "bundle" users become part of the moneytrain. Marketing is very expensive and every paying customer is to be valued if you want sustainable success.

I'm looking forward to Scrivener but I will most likey wait until 2.0 comes and then hop in. It appears to be a well developed application and the forums are active with users that can answer just about any question you need. Job well done L&L.

iTunes Converter
Jan 12 2009

HMURCHISON  Bad timing.

I think some people will love this app but $40 probably pays for a third of the tracks that I have that are iTunes+ upgradable. Sure $120 is expensive vs $40 but rather than undergoing a lossy process here I actually uprade the data given to my tracks. I'm holding out though in the the hopes that Apple lets me pick and choose which songs I want to move to iTunes + and then my price would literally drop to as low as half.

Here's to a DRM free music world!

Ultralingua Dictionaries
Jan 10 2009

HMURCHISON  An Ultralingua rep says this

"As a representative of the company, I just need to clarify a couple of points on the upgrade policy. First, we have never charged $25.00 for upgrades: upgrades cost $19.95, and for customers with multiple dictionaries (three or more, as in the case of the previous post), they are $14.95. Of course, upgrades are always painful. But Ultralingua provides many free upgrades during the life of a product, and major version upgrades only occur every 18 months to two years.

Finally, if we were only changing the user interface, upgrades would be much cheaper. In fact, our dictionary team is working constantly to improve the dictionary content, adding new words as they enter the languages we cover, and expanding on usage notes, conjugators, and more. We work hard to bring the highest quality for the most accessible price."

So if you have 3 or more Dictionary you get a %20 discount in addition to constant evolution of the product in between standard paid upgrades. Is that really blood sucking from a company that starts off at shareware pricing for some solid language tools.

I think it's a bit more appropriate to merely comment on the price of upgrades versus centering your whole review around something that is auxiliary to the new features of UL7. Some of us want to know about the latest version who don't own the program and thus would never be bent out of shape about the upgrade prices which you used so eagerly to demonize the company.

When you do a review you're providing a service. Anger simply clouds your views and turns your post into a bully pulpit. I hope in the future you'll refrain from posting editorials as reviews. I have taken to heart your points and will make sure I understand the upgrade pitfalls but I have learned absolutely nothing about UL7 with your review and that is unfortunate.

FontExplorer X Pro
Jan 6 2009

HMURCHISON  Actually this is a pretty solid update. The UI is now up-to-date and while it looks a lot like the free version at first glance once you dig a little deeper you see that it offers much more functionality than the free version with plugins for most of the Pro level graphics application and a whole slew of customizability. The sever version also signifies that this is a serious application (if the "Pro" hadn't already tipped someone off)

If your needs are very basic then of course you can stick with the free version or Font.app that comes with OS X. If your needs go beyond the typical user this app looks like it will be competitive with Suitcase and Font Agent Pro. I'd love to see a battle royal with the the aforementioned apps and the new Fontcase app coming to see which app remains standing.

It's good to see OS X with so many solid font management apps.

Mailplane
Dec 10 2008

HMURCHISON  $25 a lot of money? I guess relative to the price of a cup of coffee. Mailplane is a pretty simple concept. There are web apps and desktop apps. Web apps tend not to integrate within the OS (just the browser) for most things. Mailplane takes desktop app features and grafts those onto a web app. I don't know if it has offline features but for those who aren't always connected it would be nice to create a bunch of emails offline and send them when connected. You also have integration with desktop apps like Omnifocus. In the end $25 is a lot cheaper than any speeding ticket you're going to receive and the family pack is only 8 bucks more.

Deep
Dec 9 2008

HMURCHISON  Seems like a good start. I'm getting the feeling that it's not going to become truly effective unti there's a 2.0 release. I'd like some way of controlling the initial batch logging procedure so it's not pulling up useless pics cached from the installed browsers.

It should use Quick Look (though it does show larger versions of "cliked" pics). No keep in mind this is just my first brief run through of the UI. I could be missing a lot of hidden functionality.

We decided not to use it - since Quicklook uses only one window, and you can have multiple Deep windows open, all with different images selected. Also the quicklook window goes away when you select out of the application. There is a full screen view.

SOHO Organizer

HMURCHISON  I think Chonosnet should have instilled some "good will" and delivered this upgrade for free and then prepared a paid upgrade to enable Leopard support and other features.

I realize companies have to make money to progress with development but man SOHO customers have been drug through the mud long enough.

I have checked out Nighthawk and it sounds interesting. PIM software for the Mac needs to improve...quickly.

Nisus Writer Pro
May 2 2007

HMURCHISON  I'd rather Nisus return back to the old days where they delivered world class Word Processing. They aren't a shareware company here to deliver bare bones cheap software.

Express isn't going anywhere but if you want more features then the cost goes up.

I'll probably buy both Mellele and NWP. Supporting both helps out loyal Mac developers and is much cheaper than MS Word to boot.

Spanning Sync
Mar 29 2007

HMURCHISON  I just deleted Spanning Sync from my Mac. I agree that for some people the ability to sync between GCalendar and iCal is worth it to them but I found that I wasn't happy with the pricing as well as memory usage (SS can take 50MB of RAM while idling)

I'll wait and see if Apple and Googles newfound partnership evolves into better linking between GCal and iCal. I have a hunch it will.

Journler

*****

HMURCHISON  I'm totally new to Journaling myself but this application has made my babysteps easy. I like the fact that rather than bookmarking pages to retain information I can just use the Services menu to save a page or selected text into my Journal and then add other links or pieces of media later. All with the ability to search and find this data later via Spotlight. The media handling is nice with the iMediabrowser and the UI is solid. Phil Dow has an eye for what looks good as well as what is functional.

He has totally busted his arse on version and it shows. I haven't even used %50 of what this app can do yet I'm very impressed with what I've seen. I will be donating the $25 and I'll probably donate again to help Dow get Journler up to speed with Leopard. He listens to users and fixes stuff like a madman. Clearly he has no wife or gf ;)

I noticed that Journler 2.5 is Apple's "Featured Download of the week" looks like others are beginning to notice this app and what makes it special.

HMURCHISON  This program is his labor of love. Feedback is certainly warranted but it must be constructive.
