HERMIT  @foofoorabbit - there is an explanation for all your questions on the program's website. It would help keep the information an reviews on this site useful if the people that wish to make them could at least look at the program's web site before posting.

True, it is longer than your average twitter, so I can see how that would be taxing...

HERMIT  "Written with C++/wxWidgets GUI libs and can be used with other OSes such as Mac OS, Windows..." So, it's a Linux program using a universal library for maximum portability to other OSes from its original one, Linux.

Awesome review!

HERMIT  This is normal for an update. The update is only installing the CHANGED files (those being updated). If the directory structure doesn't exist, the installer creates them. But, the downside is that if you've moved or deleted the original file / program, you're left with an un-updated app and / or a useless folder that holds updated files.

The only fixes would be to 1) get a copy of the original program by either a) restoring from backup (you have one, right?), b) re-installing from the original install disc, or c) extracting from the original install pkg, then 2) either a) copy the updated files into the corresponding folders or b) re-update.

If you were expecting an UPDATE to include the whole program it updates, then you should also expect an update file that is almost as large as the original install (in this case, a DVD).

HERMIT  Thank you for the offer. I wondered about that since there is no minimum CPU listed in the requirements. As a side thought, don't only G3 versions work on MacIntels and Rosetta? And I'm sending an email off now! Thank you very much for the service! This program looks so much better than any other solution I've seen yet!

HERMIT  I can't get it to start sharing. Console logs an error of 'dyld: incompatible cpu-subtype' then an 'iphotod crashed' entry. That is also all the information shown in the crash log. I am running 10.4.2 fully updated on a G3 iMac.

RICHN  We built the application for G4s, or better (when displaying images in the slideshow, we resize the JPEGs on the fly.) So we depend on the G4 optimizations that the compiler generates.

Send an email to bugs@bitpatterns.com with a return address. We'll build you a version for the G3.

HERMIT  Or you could just use Witch by the same author as Butler. It's free, and doesn't use any screen real estate. There are six different choices for what you can see based on all or front app, and whether or not the window is minimized. It's prefpane takes any key combination. And I'm not associated with either of these programs in any way other than using them...

HERMIT  In regards to the video feature, under the 'Advanced' tab in the preferences is the option turning on "Play Videos:" with the options of "in the main window","in a separate window", and "full screen".

Hmm, interesting... :-)
