HEAVY_SHOWER  Sorry about the delay -- just a note to say that TrailRunner, actually, since several updates back, has stopped causing all that havoc to my preference files -- all original .plist extensions remain as is. Thanks.

On another note, TrailRunner is greatly appreciated, and is a fun way to keep stats on my jogging routes.

HEAVY_SHOWER  The menu highlighting for Butler's items don't conform to iLeopard's settings. In iLeopard's Aqua, the menu highlight should be grey-blue instead of bright blue. And in Graphite the highlight is slightly lighter. Otherwise, everything else is just wonderful.

HEAVY_SHOWER  I had to go through my Preferences folder, and normally I ignore the Size and Kind categories hidden beyond the Finder window, unless I open the window wide -- well, I decided this time to list everything by Kind. So, upon extending the window to access the column header, so as to view the Kind category, I was surprised to see that practically all of my preference files were identified as "TrailRunner Model Snapshots"! What's that all about??

FREEZYJOSY  Hi. Why so anonymous? We're still living people behind software and the internet.

But regarding your issue with the preference files. The .plist file extension is a very common file extension like .txt and so on.

The last application that registers on your mac to be able to write this kind of file will be recognized by the operating system and this is being displayed in Finder.

But in general you are right. So I changed my application to be not recognized anymore as it does not make sense in this case to have TrailRunner register as the default application for files of kind plist.

Happy New year,

- berbie.

ROBBY.IS.ON  Heavy_Shower, I thought you were quite rude.

Remember, this is not the developer's forum; this is MacUpdate, a site that lists Mac and iPhone software.

Very few developers actually look at the comments here, Berbie is an exemption. And while he/she didn't answer immediately (which you can't expect), you haven't either.

SANDRO NOEL  Freezy,

Being a developer myself I would recommend that you rename the plist extension to another of your choosing, it does not matter the name of the extension your software will still load the content as a plist dictionary. and this way you will not confuse the rest of the system.

Regards.

HEAVY_SHOWER  What's the point of New Text Notes that can't be inputed with notes? While experimenting, I created 7 Untitled Notes that appear in the menu bar's Recent Entries but not in the Inbox.

Now my Inbox is empty, after filing my clippings, yet the menu bar's Recent Entries still list those 7 Untitled Notes.

And must I really drag a filed clipping from the Inbox to the desktop just to view it? -- Not to mention having to first select Organize... from the menu bar's menu to access the Inbox when it remains listed in the menu bar's Recent Entries list?

MeNotes
Jul 5 2008

HEAVY_SHOWER  Because of Scribblet I ran into this little app -- and so far I'm liking it. Unlike Scribblet, MeNotes has a drop down menu with a list of, or categories for different notes. Too bad though that the developer might have left MeNotes aside because it could use further user refinements: the window frame is much too fat. And I separator line before the "new note" item would be appreciated. Otherwise, I'm liking this, and seems to be handling itself well. Also, the menu bar icon is super.

LaCie Update Tool
May 15 2008

HEAVY_SHOWER  Something extraordinary happened.

I had tried to update my new Little Disk, with the same catastrophic results as several users reported in the previous post.

And for each time I ran the Update Tool, the software confirmed that it had detected a device that needed a firmware updating.

I ran the Update utility many times hoping that it might eventually do its thing successfully -- but to no avail. So this last time I figured, what the hell, I'll try something different. Instead of choosing the Little Disk enclosure among LaCie's list of external drives, I chose the next best equivalent -- the Porsche Mobile drive -- and presto, the update ran its course successfully and my disk mounted on the desktop!

I already contacted Lacie support, but then I read your comment and tried updating using another harddrive scheme (porsche mobile) and in an instance all my drives were back at my desktop working with no data loss. thanks for that tip again since i started to panic due to loss of my music collection... ah and thanks to Lacie of course for providing us with software to kill their hardware and keep the support team busy ;)

TANONE  Thank you... same here with a Firewire/USB 250 GB Little Disk (just 1 week old!!!). The firmware update stopped at 83% and I was completely unable to recover the drive until I followed your advice: selected the Mobile model and I got it back to life, without any data loss. The important thing to comment is that this happened with the latest version of the LaCie Update Tool (2.0). I also used this version to update two other LaCie drives (a Rugged 80 GB and a desktop Porsche 320 GB) without any problem.

HEAVY_SHOWER  Rebooting the entire system seems a bit drastic. I too ran into that problem, but for me, there are two remedies. If I'm in the type tool before and after switching to Fontagent to enable a font (or to re-enable it by activating the entire family), I'll switch into a different tool, or even deactivate a type layer, then switch back into the type tool -- apparently the font menu gets rebuilt (?). If that fails, I'll simply relaunch the app but not reboot the entire system.

FinderPop

HEAVY_SHOWER  When selecting multiple files (as I discovered -- such as, to send them all to the Trash), and the cursor remains put on any one of the selected files (such as, to switch to the keyboard to Command-Delete, or to Open), and if FinderPop's Control-Free is active, a single file of the multiple selection will become highlighted, the rest will loose their selection, and a hovering contextual menu (especially bothersome if a folder is selected among the multiple selected files: the folder's contents will be displayed) and a hovering contextual menu will promptly appear. (But on other occasions the control-free's automatic contextual menu does not *stick*, obliging a repeated, sometimes several repeated actions with the cursor).

What I have to remind myself when selecting several files is to move the cursor AWAY from the multiple selection before switching to the keyboard or whatever.

Is this normal behavior? I don't recall the old FinderPop from System 8/9 exhibiting this...

JART  Because the Mac version doesn't have a GUI, it's a little tricky. You have to edit the following file:

/Library/Application Support/BFilter/config

and add "page_cleanup = safe" (without quotes) somewhere after "ad_border = none". If you didn't have an earlier version installed, then you edit the option, not add it.

The possible values are "off", "safe" and "maximum".

They are documented here:

http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/bfilter/trunk/bfilter/conf/config.default?view=markup

Finally, you have to restart BFilter. Either just reboot, or issue this command from the terminal:

sudo /Library/StartupItems/BFilter/BFilter restart

HEAVY_SHOWER  Yes, I was having compatibility problems with my connection, and now with BFilter 1.0.4a, everything's fine.

The web is now a much better experience with BFilter. Thanks!

HEAVY_SHOWER  Doesn't work for me. I get this message after clicking a URL:

------------------------

The problem was:

(BF) Locations are out-of-sync with their counterparts.

Reinstalling BFilter will fix that.

------------------------

What counterparts? Anyway, reinstalling fixes nothing.

JART  When BFilter is installed, it duplicates your network locations, like this:

Automatic

(BF) Automatic

Suppose "(BF) Automatic" is selected. In this case, BFilter finds the counterpart location "Automatic", to check if it needs to use an upstream proxy.

The error you are getting means that "(BF) Automatic" uses a network interface (AirPort, Ethernet, ...) that's not configured in "Automatic".

If reinstalling BFilter doesn't help, try uninstalling it, then make sure your network connection works, then install it again.

If that doesn't help, send me the following file:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/Preferences.plist

Then I should be able to resolve this problem.

HEAVY_SHOWER  And what if you don't wear Nike or lug a pod around? The upgrade worth the download?

Sometimes Apple makes me feel like an incredibly cheap inferior consumer. Still, I've always preferred Adidas or New Balance, and a singular, full-force focus when I jog.

Still, it's only a 20MB download, I don't see how it would be troublesome...

HEAVY_SHOWER  I would imagine that all these new features are taking up more memory. Currently, with my v2.3, PopChar is using almost 13 megs, which is nothing to complain about. What about v3? Anyone?

ShelfMenu
Mar 25 2006

HEAVY_SHOWER  I'd very much like to keep ShelfMenu in my menu bar except that I can't stand the icon -- trivial perhaps, but consider that its visibility is 100% permanent. I'd like to see a choice for Apple's minimalist style of icons that are solid black/white, thick lines and/or fills -- the grey representing an altered state. I think I'll try my hand at going into the MenuIcon.gif file, if you won't mind.

CEMACSOFT  Well, to be honest, I do not like it either... It is the first thing I found which was not too bad, and I'm definitely not an artist. I'll try to find something better, promise, but I first wanted to include some more functionalities.

Anyway, if you want to change the icon just change the file MenuIcon.gif in the Resource folder of the bundle. One thing only: the file must have the same name and be a gif. And if you have a good one and want to send it over, I'd be glad to replace the awful gray thing!

FontExplorer X Pro
Mar 14 2006

HEAVY_SHOWER  I really wanted to keep using FX, but for some reason, after trying previous beta versions, FX kept duplicating certain fonts and putting them in separate font files. So I might get an italic with a bold and a bold italic style, but if I also wanted to activate the regular style, it wouldn't let me because the regular also has the bold italic! Either I activate the bold (along with the italic and bold italic), or activate the regular (without the bold)! I haven't read anyone else complaining about this. Why me? Granted, some of my fonts are oldish... But FontAgent never mixed things up as such.

FontExplorer X Pro

LARS HEDEMANN  Well, I also have the same problems. And I am considering going back to Fontagent Pro. Fontexplorer X is very unprecise, when it comes to auto-activation. Why activate a whole family of 30 fonts, when I only use 1 of them. fontagent Pro never did that. So in the end, I have 3 times as many fonts open as I should. and it doesn't deactivate them after a restart. It just doesn't handle font-naming very well.

HEAVY_SHOWER  The reason why I can't use Safari Enhancer without a major bother is that I'm using an ad-blocker style sheet. I'd like to be able to change my link colours on the fly without underlines, but to do that I have to launch Safari Enhancer, quit Safari, pull out Safari Enhancer's style sheet, copy the code, open the ad-blocker style sheet, paste the code, go to Safari's preferences... Would it be possible for Safari Enhancer to add it's code in an existing style sheet?

HEAVY_SHOWER  I've been running toPositionTheDock for quite a while that I can't even remember how I installed it. It has never caused any problems, or at least I've never suspected it to. My system is running 10.4.5. So what's been changed in this 0.2 version? Nothing's been noted in the discript. above -- are comments here saying that version 0.1 runs but not 0.2?

HEAVY_SHOWER  I tried to retrace my tracks from the developer's site when I did somehow find an active d/l link a couple of days ago... but they obviously got wind of it 'cuz I can no longer find it. Anyway, I reverted to version 0.5.8. I'm not familiar with software design but the most obvious issue to hit the user is that I could never hook up with more than three hosts -- which limited my searches quite considerably.

Change Startup Disk

DRG  The damn thing brought down my system because "charpalette" refused to let it restart. So I couldn't force quit neither the Finder or Suitcase. I did a force-restart, held option down, and had a choice to boot into 9 or into my X on the external drive. After choosing 9, my mouse went on steroids. So instead of booting back into X, I decided to boot with the DVD and run Disk Utility. Everything seemed fine until I rebooted... then I crashed at the grey screen! Needless to say, I cursed the author and trashed CSD!
