GSLUSHER  One reason that developers might still use Stuffit is that it typically gives smaller files than OS X's built-in .zip archiver. For example, I made archives of a 2.2 MB QuickBooks file. The built-in .zip process resulted in a 504 KB archive. Dropstuff 9.0.1 made it into 396 KB. Most developers have to pay for the total download activity per month, so making the downloaded file smaller helps. On the other hand, a properly-done disk image will already be compressed, so there might not be much gained by compressing it. In some cases, it can be necessary as the host server isn't set up to handle .dmg files, but will handle .zip or .sit files.

GSLUSHER  Uh, MSIE is dead, dead, dead. DEAD. MS no longer even provides it for downloading. They announced 'way back in June, 2003, that they were no longer developing it. They cut off support Dec 31, 2005 and took it off their site as of Jan 31, 2006.

GSLUSHER  You will probably find that Stuffit Expander is quite useful. You may shut yourself out of a lot of software if you don't get it. OTOH, perhaps you prefer Windows software like .zip files.

GSLUSHER  An additional bit of info: you don't need to know anything about the name to find an invisible item with command-F. Just delete the "Name" criterion and use only "Visibility." Worse, once you find a folder that way, you can OPEN it simply by double-clicking on the folder icon in the search results.

GSLUSHER  One doesn't need to use the terminal. Several utilities, including File Buddy, will find all invisible items. Also, at least in Panther, if you know part of the folder name, you can find it in a command-F search by choosing "Visibility" and "visible and invisible items." File Buddy can also turn invisibility on and off, along with a lot of other functions.
