EPOXY
Jun 17 2006

GSHENAUT  Epoxy is listed here as shareware, but it appears that it has been released as freeware, and the author seeks developers--French speaking REALBASIC programmers who are using Windows or Linux (!)--to participate, so in some sense it appears to be open source.

Express Scribe
Jun 9 2006

GSHENAUT  I tried the free Express Scribe program, and it basically did what it aims to do. However, in the recording I used to test it, the volume was so low it was hard to hear (it was recorded using the built-in mic on an mp3 player). However, there is no "amplify" function in Express Scribe that I could find, so I had to resort to an external program to amplify the waveform before I was able to transcribe it.

Still, I liked the program, and of course the price is right.

GREG SHENAUT  I don't see the advantage of this over the "gv" ports in Darwinports and Fink, which work great and are free.

HOLYPOLY  To some, like me, it may be an advantage that MGV is OSX native :)

ANONYMOUS  Handy. I just added these two lines to my .profile:

alias dockoff="osascript -e 'tell app \"dock\" to quit'"

alias dockon="osascript -e 'tell app \"dock\" to activate'"

Command-tab app switching still works, so life is good. I think I'll see if I can remember how to write these into shell scripts, then use Platypus on them.

Ultralingua Dictionaries

GREG SHENAUT  I also checked the wrong box, ordering French-Italian instead of Spanish-English. However, all I had to do (after asking customer support) was to put in a second order for Spanish-English, and send an email with the two order codes, requesting a refund for French-Italian. Not long afterword, a credit for the appropriate amount appeared on my credit card statement.

Word Translator
Sep 13 2004
**½..

GREG SHENAUT  Based on the 5.0b4 demo: (1) the 1st alleged Fr-En translation is actually Portuguese-French(!); (2) the format doesn't allow connections between different forms of the same word (e.g., "ĂȘtre" & "est"); (3) the dictionary is filled with seemingly random two-word combinations, including ungrammatical and implausible ones (e.g., "commune petit", "commune peur", and "commune y").

If the full version of WTX has those kinds of perversities, then it is worthless, but perhaps it just has a very bad demo.

GREG SHENAUT  The translations appear to be identical to those of Sherlock's translation channel.

The in-place translation feature has potential but doesn't work with all programs.
