BRUJI You can use pretty much any barcode scanner to enter barcodes into the Pedias. The cheapest option is probably the CueCat which can be found on eBay for about $10. Otherwise you can also use regular webcams instead of the iSight to scan the barcodes. Take a look at this post in our forum about cameras and scanners that work well with the Pedias: http://www.bruji.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2637 (Alternatively you can also type in the UPC/ISBN or keywords to start a search.) Unfortunately our barcode scanning code doesn't work on the iPhone yet since it relies on video frames rather than still frames. But we're hoping that we might be able to incorporate that in the future as well. (Version 4.4)

WireTap Studio | Dec 19 2008 |
AMBROSIASW The easiest way to explain the difference is that WireTap Studio is a complete system for capturing your recordings, editing them to the exact way you want them to sound and a transferring application. WireTap Anywhere is located in your System Preferences window, and is something that allows you to create virtual audio devices. Meaning you can select a multitude of audio inputs, be it microphones to applications such as skype, and harness them into a single audio source, which can then be used by existing software. No need to have the overly complicated mixing board for 5 microphones, then try to input the sound from iChat, Skype, and iTunes. With Wiretap Anywhere, you can simply select all these, create your own virutal device and that will appear as a single item in your softwares audio input. We offer video turtorials on both products on the Ambrosia Website. Also, both products have a trial period so you can try them both and learn the difference with a more hands on approach. LEV But isn't it nice to live without upgrade fever for a while... & tempting to ask "What does Scrivener currently not do that you need it to do?" But the reality is that what the developer Keith Blount calls v1.5 and anyone else would call v2.0 is about to go into private beta testing any day now. It's also worth saying that Mr Blount's idea of an early beta is some way ahead of, say, Microsoft or FileMaker's idea of a release version. So (I speculate) the private beta cycle should be fairly fast. [No connection with the developer. Just a happy camper.] (Version 1.12b1)

It is still early days: 1) It seems to unfortunately be lacking support for Default Folder X. 2) No means of viewing attachments. 3) There doesn't seem to be an option for importing specific tasks into iCal. Stability seems to be rock solid on a G5 single PPC. The screenshot utility is quite handy. (Version 1.0.1)

GLOBETROTTERDK I have been using this app for a while now, so I thought it would be best with a new review. The problems that I mentioned in my last review are slightly irritating, but I find the major problem being that it syncs all events received. It doesn't seem to be able to only sync those events that the user has RSVP'd as "will" or "may" attend. Very irritating since I have really grown to love this app. It would be great if the developer addressed these issues. My rating remains the same. (Version 1.0.1)

I just came across the following post: "Ok. I Just googled ChronoSync... apparently the latest version, 3.3.6, not only isn't able of creating bootable volumes (backups) (clones), it doesn't even get the file ownerships and permissions correct on what it does copy!!!!!! What? Read that again. The files it creates are are INCOMPLETE. They are missing some of the most important metadata. And if they're missing that, what about their basic data forks? Are they intact? sigh. Gotta push this point home. Back in *** 2006 ***, Bruce pointed us to a great review of backup softwares (url below). In that article, ChronoSync 3.2.1 is rated ***NOT RECOMMENDED***. A note is included that says the developers will be addressing the ownership and permissions (and other severe) issues in an upcoming release. I tried to submit the text from my crash log to the developer, but the Google Docs spreadsheet keeps crashing!!! The clip browser is easier to use than in earlier versions of CopyPaste. For some reason, the preference that places an icon in the dock doesn't work in Tiger. I seem to remember other apps able to do this in Tiger. GLOBETROTTERDK PocketMac's RingtoneStudio has probably the most logical feature set of any iPhone ringtone utility. It is a joy to use as no other program is needed for editing sound files. Having said that, RS has some serious problems. iTunes 7.7.1 tends to crash with OS X Tiger (PPC). RS seems to dump ringtones from other 3rd. party programs such as iToner and reset the iTunes preferences. It also dumps (disapears) ringtones installed with iToner on the iPhone, despite not syncing. I can't really explain why RS does what it does to screw things up, but it happens everytime I have tried to use RS. Too bad, the app could be rated as 5 star if PocketMac got these issues ironed out. (Version 1.0)

GLOBETROTTERDK Possible to add many kinds of health/fitness/workout data. Expensive. Layout doesn't live up to what make users are accustomed to and the app is counter intuitive. Metric measurement preferences seem to be an afterthought, are difficult to find and do not function well. Lacks ability to use comma as decimal point. No 24 hr clock preference. Uses a very basic USDA foods database with no EU or metric alternative for non-US residents. First priority for the developer should be to provide better support for users outside of the US. Second priority should be to provide the ability to add diagrams of weightlifting equipment to each exercise in the workout list. (Try looking at http://www.exerciseorganizer.com/ )Third priority should be to create an interface that is more intuitive and conforms to Apple standards. Despite my comments, I believe this software has potential. It is also nice to see that OS X Tiger is fully supported. (Version 2.0)

DCOLACE There is an option on the initial screen of the Plaxo system preferences to show/hide the Plaxo menu item. (Version 3.9v616)

Plaxo | Mar 28 2008 |
GLOBETROTTERDK True, but maybe there should be. At any rate, the preferences should work correctly when a user chooses for the toolbar NOT start at login/startup. (Version 3.10v616)

Plaxo | Apr 2 2008 |
GLOBETROTTERDK It should also be noted that the toolbar (even the newest version) still restarts after having been told to quit. It also starts up when the prefs are set for it NOT to start at login/startup. These issues really need to be sorted out. (Version 3.10v616)

Plaxo | Apr 2 2008 |
DCOLACE Which version of OS X are you using? I've recently tested this feature on Leopard and I know it is working as designed. You might be confusing the fact that we will auto-launch Plaxo when you launch the Address Book (all OS versions) or Apple Mail (10.4 and above) as well as the Plaxo preferences since it services the functions of those respective plugins. Plaxo is intended to be a service to your system and really should be running all the time. When it isn't actively syncing, it uses virtually no CPU time or other computer resources (check Activity Monitor for a comparison of everything else running on your Mac). If you don't like seeing the menu bar icon, you can simply turn that off while still allowing Plaxo to run. (Version 3.10v616)

Plaxo | Apr 2 2008 |
GLOBETROTTERDK I start my Address Book at login/startup. I disagree that the Plaxo toolbar needs to be running all the time. I prefer to choose when I want the toolbar to function. The Plaxo service is still in it's infancy and therefore I only use it once in a while. Regardless, of how often someone uses Plaxo, I can see no reason to justify it running all of the time as users aren't dumping hundreds of new contacts into their Address Book on a daily basis. Thanks for the prompt reply. (Version 3.10v616)

Plaxo | Apr 3 2008 |
DCOLACE You are certainly entitled to your point of view but I would argue that you are diminishing the usefulness of the Plaxo service by selectively employing it. One of the goals of Plaxo is to take the burden of contact management off of our members shoulders. With Plaxo running on your Mac, your calendars and contacts keep up to date without you having to think about it. From the web to your desktop (and likely to your phone) you shouldn't have to wonder if your latest edit (or Plaxo contact update) is where you want it to be. Hopefully, we'll earn your trust so you can use our service to its full potential. (Version 3.10v616)

Plaxo | Apr 17 2008 |
AROBULACK I'm going to have to back up globetrotter on this one, that last version of Plaxo had some bugs. The menu bar item was also unquittable, even if you quit it, it kept coming back, and during syncs I would get screen-height growl error messages full of XML code. It was very frustrating. I'm gonna give this new version a try, but Plaxo obviously considers Mac users second class citizens and the software is much less powerful (i.e. no selective calendar syncing) and buggier than its Windows counterpart. (Version 3.11 v636)

DCOLACE We are completely committed to developing Plaxo for Mac to be the best solution available to Mac users to keep their data in sync across the web, and more. I use and depend upon it myself on my three home Macs. Our Plaxo for Windows software has a couple of years head start as far as features and performance/reliability work. We started from scratch with the Mac software so that we could provide a custom solution that would integrate seamlessly with the Mac. I'm sorry for any peculiarities you've run into in using Plaxo for Mac over the past months/years, but I think every release has marked steady progress in features and reliability. I hope that your experience with the updated release will bear this out. Keep a look out for our coming release as it is one of the most significant releases we've done in quite a while in terms of new capabilities and reliability improvements. (Version 3.11 v636)

GLOBETROTTERDK Thanks to Gordon Bell and Alan Lau. Prosoft lived up to their promise and I just received an upgrade free of charge. Thanks for taking time to post an update and glad we could help you out! Some folks may be wondering why our serials aren't tied into dates. The "problem" is that Drive Genius can be found at various stores (around the globe), including large stores like Apple, Office Depot (yep, carrying mac titles now!) and upcoming at Office Max and possibly Best Buy... As you can imagine, we build products for those shelves and then ship out.. Therefore the serial inside the box would never be a true representation of when it was purchased by the customer.. Hopefully we've made it as easy as possible for customers to get their upgrades in this kind of situation, but i do appreciate feedback. Thanks again for posting the update and let us know if you ever need anything- Gordon from Prosoft (Version 2.0.1)

Drive Genius | Feb 13 2008 |
GLOBETROTTERDK I just purchased version 1.5.3 ONE WEEK AGO. Unlike most developers, I see no free upgrade offer for having purchased within the last month or two. There is no way that the sales department did not know that a new version was being ramped up when I purchased Drive Genius. An honest developer and/or his sales department would have made the customer (me) aware of the upgrade and asked if they would like to wait for the new version CD and provide the download as a freebie. I also purchased Data Rescue II last week. Is this going to be upgraded from version 1.2 to 2.0? Yes, I and I am sure, many others at MacUpdate have noticed that Drive Genius jumps from version 1.5.3 to 2.0.1. (Version 2.0.1)

GLOBETROTTERDK I have a copy of Drive Genius and need some advice with regards to a second drive in my G 5 single (OS X Tiger). I have a Seagate Barracuda (500 GB) drive that I would like at least one HFS+ partition (possibly 2 HFS+ partitions or one HFS+ and one FAT partition). The (one) HFS+ partition would have an OS X system. I would like to install Ubuntu PPC or YDL 6 (depending on which system includes a working sound support) on separate (2nd. or 3rd.) partition. Should I just leave part of the disk unformatted and then create a Linux partition by using GParted during the Linux install or use Drive Genius? Should I create the partition(s) with Disk Utility and then resize with Drive Genius or should I just create them with Drive Genius? When using Drive Genius, I can see that when Disk Utility formats multiple partitions, there are some small, odd partitions on the disk as well. Does Drive Genius create these extra bits automagically or do they have to be created by hand? Any advice would be appreciated. (Version 1.5.3)

CheckSpell | Feb 7 2008 |
GLOBETROTTERDK It is good to see developers step into the gaping hole left by Apple not adding spelling support for the languages that OS X is localized for. Many multi-linguists have been orphaned by Apple's (lack?) of policy in this area. Unfortunately, it is unclear from the website if CheckSpell supports other OpenOffice.org dictionaries such as Indonesian, Latvian, etc (anyone understand Polish?). GLOBETROTTERDK Wow, Data Rescue II saved my bacon where DiskWarrior couldn't. The HD couldn't be saved, but most of the info on the HD could, thanks to Data Rescue II. One quirk with Data Rescue II is that cloning an HD does not seem to use the info from a recover info scan, but rather seems to just clone the already defective disc to another disk. In my case, this meant that the disk I cloned didn't seem to have any recovered info on it. (Version 1.2)

PROSOFTMIKE Hi there, and thanks for the kind comments. I'd just like to clarify the Data Rescue clone function and it's purpose. Your assumption is correct about the clone function -- it performs a simple block copy from one disk to another, and does not in itself recover files. Its primary use is to minimize accesses to the disk in question, in cases where the disk is suspected of having hardware problems. In those cases, it's best to minimize accesses to the disk. The scanning and recovery operations require multiple passes and seeks, whereas the clone operation requires just a single pass, so by cloning to a healthy drive, the scan and recovery can be performed on the clone, saving wear and tear on the ailing drive.

I also contacted the people at St. Clair Software and got this answer: "The only compatibility issue I'm aware of is that if you're running File Buddy in administrator mode, Default Folder X won't work in it. (What I mean by that is that you've given it your admin password after turning on the 'administrator mode' option in FB's general preferences). Default Folder X cannot enhance programs that are running with administrator privileges - Mac OS X won't allow it. The alternative is to run File Buddy without giving it admin privileges." GLOBETROTTERDK A heads up on this app in connection with the promotion. I have experienced problems exporting to .rtf Responses from the developer have vascilated between defending the performance of the app to stating that MS Word is needed to read the data exported to an .rtf file. Expored data has been opened in both TextEdit and MS Word, as well as other text editors supporting .rtf files with a lack of consistency in the results and with the same basic problem. While responses were prompt and friendly, a response to a technical problem must consist of more than an assertation that "exporting to RTF works well here". I can provide screenshots for anyone interested in my being able to document the lack of performance of the .rtf export feature. I actually think that this app could be one of the top contenders for mind mapping on the Mac. That just makes the apparent lack of willingness to help diagnose the problem look more and more like the developer(s) shooting themselves in the foot. (Version 2.1)

JESSE GROSJEAN This thread discusses this decision... http://hogbaysoftware.com/forums/taskpaper/topics/338_Leopard_Only_for_1_1_Was_Recognizing_URLs_and_URIs_ In my mind, since your upgrade will be free once you decide to upgrade to Leopard, I don't see a lot of downside for existing users. There are apps that are planning to go Leopard only. Here are a few big ones that I've heard about. Delicious Library. TextMate 2.0. Also consider lots of apples apps like Mail, iCal, etc. There are really good reasons for going Leopard only. It will enable me to produce a higher quality application quicker. And you are free to upgrade when you are read. (Version 1.0.1)

GLOBETROTTERDK After my experiences with Apple and the clone wars, Apple dumping Apple Works, as well as various experiences with other hardware producers and software developers, I admit that my antenna are slightly quicker to react than they used to be. I admit that your plans seem reasonable and well argumented. I personally appreciate backward software compatibility where feasible. There are some software developers represented here on MacUpdate that may add a little new code, but no real features, thus providing the justification for jacking up the software version and releasing the need to purchase an upgrade license. Having first read some of the critical comments about you as a developer (referring to your Mori software), but deciding anyway to purchase TaskPaper and then having read the message that I quoted, I was concerned that you might belong to the category of more dubious developers. However, considering your levelheaded response, I believe that my concerns were unfounded. Thanks for your reply. (Version 1.0.1)

TaskPaper | Nov 8 2007 |
GCOGHILL Hmm, I knew nothing of these plans either. I agree it should be made apparent (on the apps main site, possibly here on MU, etc.) that the 1.1 release is planned to be 10.5-only if the dev has already made that decision. (Version 1.0.2)

TaskPaper | Nov 8 2007 |
JOHN F. I didn't know it was going Leopard-only either. But TaskPaper going Leopard-only is not really what's bothering me, as I like the software as it is. I use the software for the features it has now. What I am worried about is that some persistent bugs will only be addressed with the 1.1 Leopard-only release. Letting TaskPaper going Leopard-only before the most stable and bug-free Tiger version is made, that's what I'm worried about. I hope this worry is unfounded. I'm all for going forward and letting the developer go forward and let him use all the wonderful developer tools Leopard has to offer. But it is my strong opinion that the switch to Leopard-only should not be about bug-fixes. The switch to Leopard should be about added features. Sure Leopard makes it easier to address those bugs, but that doesn't help those who are stuck in Tiger with each their own valid reasons. Sure, a developer has to weigh-in which bugs he can fix before the switch. All I ask is that the developer addresses as many as possible before the switch. That's all I ask, that it's his attention to at least try his best to squash as many bugs for all the people stuck in Tiger before going Leopard-only. (Version 1.0.2)

TaskPaper | Nov 8 2007 |
GCOGHILL I'd have to agree with John F. that 1.1 should be features and not bug fixes, but I suppose since we're at 1.02 right now, we should give the dev the benefit of the doubt on this. I think the main thing about the 10.5 jump is that it happened so close to the 10.5 release - a lot (or all) of the apps the dev mentioned were going 10.5-only haven't really seen any major updates, and I am sure all major Tiger issues have been smoothed out. TP 1.0 was released I believe right before Leopard, so technically all of his users were running 10.4 when purchasing, so it's only fair to make the 1.0x version right before moving on. I think I recall either here or on the dev's forums that he mentioned the 1.0 release was an in-progress release. I'm sure he'll make good on getting 1.0x up to snuff with 10.4 before moving on to 1.1 and new features. (Version 1.0.2)

GLOBETROTTERDK All in all an excelent app. I don't understand the decision not to support bookmarks, however. Every bookmark that is added (from Yojimbo for example), is converted into a web archive. That has got to add unnecessary bloat. (Version 1.2.4)

Punakea | Aug 2 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK Wow Punakea is a great app, even at this early stage. If TagBot doesn't work for you, I would highly recommend Punakea. It would of course be best if Apple supported tagging in OS X directly through "get info". Having said that, I am hoping to see Punakea supporting .txt .doc .rtf and other file types at some time in the future. Tying Punakea into Yojimbo, EagleFiler, Yep, Bookdog, etc. would be one of my priorities (if I was the developer) as well. I haven't really figured out how to tag browser bookmarks yet. I assume Punakea only supports individual bookmark files so far? (Version 0.3.1)

DeskLickr | Aug 1 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK Looks quite interesting, but why oh why does everybody and his brother have to make their app a menu bar item? You would think everyone has unlimited menu bar space! Please at least include an option to run DeskLickr as a normal app. It would be nice if there was an auto change "days" option was included, as well as an option not to show the HUD everytime the picture changes. Lastly, is there a security issue with logging into a Flickr account without asking for a password, as DeskLickr does? (Version 1.2)

Sticky Windows | Jul 29 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK The new version of Sticky Windows seems to have sussed part of the tab issues. The chosen tabbed window will open correctly at the same time as other tabbed windows revert to their tabbed states. Unfortunately, SW still has a problem with regards to tabbed windows reverting at log in. As it is, all of the windows just clump together in the middle of the desktop. GLOBETROTTERDK Bookdog is maturing very well. I have grown to appreciate much of Bookdog's take on bookmarks, having been a URL Manager Pro user for quite some time. However, where is the support for Flock??? I know that Flock hasn't gotten to nested folders yet, but wouldn't it be possible to use something similar to the tagging that Bookdog does when migrating bookmarks to Google Bookmarks? This would make the wait for nested folders in Flock more bearable. (Version 4.2.9)

GLOBETROTTERDK This is a great widget. If you only get one program to copy lyrics into iTunes, get this widget. I have found more lyrics for my (rather esoteric) collection of songs with TunesTEXT, than with any other iTunes lyrics tool. There is a downside, however. DOUG S. You seem to have forgotten to mention one tiny yet highly important fact: The Filter is COMPLETELY different than beaTunes. beaTunes analyses the BMP (beats per minute) and uses this information to create playlists. The Filter uses an online database that keeps data on the likes and dislikes of all it's users and uses that information to recommend songs to you. The reason why I'd prefer something like beatTunes over The Filter is beaTunes relies only on you having iTunes and whatever tracks. The Filter requires a broadband connection, iTunes and the songs which have to be labelled how they choose. They also say that even very common songs might not be recognised if the track info is different, which can be even by a character. Also, if you're someone like me who has an extremely large collection of music, you're bound to have quite a bit of stuff they do not have in their database, making it useless. From now on before you make comments about why to choose one free software over another, make sure you're comparing two software that actually do the same thing. Try Tangerine! if you want to compare beaTunes to something. (Version 1.2)

CoverSutra | Jun 19 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK Now that I have had a chance to test CoverSutra, I have to say that I find the feature set and interoperability with iTunes to be extremely good. I would like to see more of the Last.fm app features integrated into CoverSutra, but please don't cut back on the general flexibility of this app. Lastly, I would say that the price is towards the high end of the scale. SOPHIESTICATION The reason why all menu items are grayed out is probably because you didn't dismissed the "Shareware Dialog". When you open CoverSutra this window will pop up telling you that you can try out CoverSutra for thirty days before buying a license. So you need to click OK on this dialog to try out CoverSutra. I'm sure the window is hidden by another window, just close all windows, until it will be revealed. I'm not sure why the preferences window does not show up on your mac. You probably just missed the window, you might use Exposé to see if the it was just hidden by a different window. CoverSutra runs mainly as an application in the background. Those "background applications" doesn't show up in the force quit window, but in the activity viewer application. You can make CoverSutra running as a standard application with Dock icon by selecting the "Show application icon in dock" option in the general preferences. (Version 1.1.6)

CoverSutra | Jun 19 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK Thanks for the quick response. I believe all of the problems I experienced are directly related to the license promt. It may be a good idea to have the "show application in dock" preference selected as default for first time users. That way you can just command-tab to the correct app. When this isn't enabled, trying to find the correct window can be a pain if you are not fore warned and have a lot of apps and windows open when trying CoverSutra for the first time. (Version 1.1.6)

CoverSutra | Jun 19 2007 |
SOPHIESTICATION Actually I had the Dock option enabled by default for this reason, but changed it in the last version because allot of users asked me to change it. Well, I think I find a better solution for the next release. (Version 1.1.6)

iGadget X | Jun 12 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK iGadget X appears to be somewhat buggy. In OS X Tiger 10.4.9, two "help" menus appear in the toolbar. The iTunes auto-sync warning appeared the first time with text that disappeared at startup. Clicking and dragging the blank window brought the text back. Plug-in descriptions in the main window are not always visible. There are a couple of plug-ins that could be useful. Driving directions, gas prices (weather???) and movie show times are way too US centric. It would be better if time was spent on enabling support of various file formats such as doc, pdf, etc. Plug-ins like file/folder backup is potentially useful. This app has potential, but is a work in progress at this time. (Version 1.1)

SVDesignMiner | Jun 4 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK It does look like SVDesignMiner has some usefulness, but in reality it is just a container for helper apps like CSSEdit and TextWrangler. Sandvox | Apr 25 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK I am testing Sandvox right now and I just love it. Yes, it is buggy and yes, $79 is a lot of money to pay for being able to edit and include raw HTML, but look at the competition. I have iWeb and even in the newest version, it locks you out, preventing a lot of the customizing most of us want. Freeway and Dreamweaver are too expensive and complicated for a casual website or two. From the reviews here, the code created by these two suck (as does iWeb). BBEdit is still alive, but Bare Bones software seems to think that minimal updating will keep users happy. RapidWeaver and Goldfish are alternatives as well. Glancing at Goldfish, it didn't appeal to me as it is slightly too customizable for my taste. I have, like and use RaidWeaver, but there hasn't been enough done to address the needs of those those people (like myself) that dabble with Web 2.0 social sites (Flikr, del.icio.us, digg, etc.). Here is what has convinced me to purchase Sandvox: Let's try a little experiment. Create a basic, one page site in RapidWeaver and Sandvox, then export both to your hard disk. (Sandvox only lets you export one page in trial mode.) Now go to the Finder and browse through the site. Notice all of the nested folders and image files that RapidWeaver creates? Now look at the site created by Sandvox. Sandvox produces a much "cleaner" site when you look at the amount of files and folders created. All in all, Sandvox is the way to go. (Version 1.2)

Trapeze | Mar 9 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK Trapeze unfortunately appears to be the best software on offer for Mac users wishing to convert .pdf files to .doc or .rtf format. It really is a shame as the developer is very responsive to users needs and problems (also developer of Amnesty). Only about 1/3 of the .pdf files originally formatted in .doc or .rtf are reconverted in passable shape. Most either end up with mangled formatting or with unreadable text (maybe in Symbol font). There are Windows programs that are able to convert from .pdf to .doc or .rtf around 98% - 100% of the time with perfect format recreation. Be careful if you go that route as there is a fair amount of vaporware in this category. (Version 1.3.1)

Little Snitch | Feb 13 2007 |
GLOBETROTTERDK I have just purchased LittleSnitch in an attempt to improve the security on my G5 running Tiger 10.4.8. I have noticed that It tries to block apps that want to access the Internet by way of something called "port 80". Some of the apps that have been caught doing this are Firefox, WeatherDock and Google Notifier, CopyPaste as well as a process called "SystemUIServer", but on the other hand, LS is configured to allow apps like the QuickTime player to be able to access "port 80". Why the difference between apps, why is it important to block "port 80" and what do you do when a lot of these apps don't allow you to change the port that they are accessing? (Version 1.2.4)

Little Snitch | Feb 13 2007 |
TWELVEIGHTYONE Port 80 is the 'internet' port, as in all traffic that uses http:// will travel through port 80. It is not wise to completely block this port, because you will not be able to access the web! Well, you'll be able to access secure websites, because they use port 443 (https://). Ports are like doors into your computer. Some need to be open, some need to be locked. There is no 'solution', only one that is specific to your needs. For instance, Safari normally only needs access to ports 80 and 443 (normal sites and secure sites). But if you try to play a RealPlayer stream Little Snitch will ask if you want to open numerous ports. This is because Real uses different ports to send data to your Mac. The Little Snitch website has excellent advice regarding ports, and their developers are very quick at responding to questions. I'd suggest giving them a call/email. (Version 1.2.4)
