Saft

GBBOB  Thank you so much for the help and info. The extra parts to the program were exactly where you said it would be. I am surprise that CleanApp did not locate it when I trashed the dang thing the first. Again I say that it really stinks that the hack of a programmer does not supply a read me telling the user how to implement the program and what is placed where since there is nothing in the Help menu about it and how little the programmer cares about his user base. I just hope what comes around goes around applies to this hack. For over 20 years I reviewed Mac Utilities and had no problem getting answers whether they were commercial, shareware or freeware developers. Based on current comments, I think Saft (or more apt Shaft) rating should be reassessed. Don't support a person who does not care about his user base. End of Line...

Saft
Nov 12 2009

GBBOB  Do not download this piece of crap. If you do, you will not be able to fully delete it. It is a damn haxie that attaches a piece of itself to a part of Safari. As I wrote earlier once you delete it, it will bring up a dialog box asking you to put Saft back in the app, folder and it also then stops your home page from loading even after you click the OK button. When Safai 4.0.4 came out I thought it would solve the problem based on what I read in the Saft help. It did not. Still every time I open Safari I get that damn box and my home page does not load. This prick of a programmer gives us no way to fully uninstall Saft. Several updates have come out since my first comment and still no uninstaller. What kind of person is this that makes a utility with no off key. The only reason I can get from all this is that the programmer is using the dialog box to annoy the user to the point that they pay for the crap he is shoving up our butts. Well, sadly I am unemployed and not well and need the money for more important things. I curse this coward for not supplying a way to get rid of this trash. I urge people to boycott Saft and use the free utility Glims that basically does that the same as Saft. End of Line...

ROBOTANK  What version of OS X are you using? Saft installs a plugin as well as the launcher application, and it sounds like this hasn't been removed. If you're on Leopard (or running Safari in 32-bit on Snow Leopard), there should be a bundle (Saft.bundle) in /Library/InputManagers. I haven't used the Saft Snow Leopard version, but as I understand it, it can either use the launcher or the Snow Leopard compatible version of SIMBL to load for 64-bit Safari. If you're using the SIMBL method, check in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins or ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins for the Saft bundle. Saft is not impossible to uninstall--I know because I've uninstalled myself :) You just need to find out where the bundle is hiding.

GBBOB  I have used and reviewed many utilities over the years and saft is the worst in implementation. First there is no read me file to tell you anything about the program, how to install, and what it installs once it is implemented within Safari. When I got to the end of the trial period, I decided not to keep it since I was using Glims and it did basically the same as Saft. So I took the app and trashed it and allowed clean app to locate any related files. The next time I launched Safari, I got a dialog box saying Saft is missing and ask me to reinstall the app. What I did not understand was why am I getting such a box if i deleted it. So I went into my archive folder found my original copy of Saft and booted the app. That was when I finally found the help for it. After going through the help, I discovered that Saft is a damn HAXIE. When it launches with Safari for the first time it places hooks into some component of Safari and there is no way to remove these pieces even if you do a reinstall of Safari which I tried. So now every time I launch Safari I first have to wait for the box to come up, click on OK and then Safari will load but I have to hit the damn OK button before Safari will load completely. Even in the help notes there are no information on how to uninstall Saft because you can't fully do. So either you buy or get use to that annoying box. You do not write a utility that cannot be fully uninstalled or have a script to remove all the parts. To me this author is nothing but a schmuck and a shyster and we all should boycot Saft and use Glims. END OF LINE...

ROBERTCOOGAN2  I agree, the dev needs to provide some sort of uninstaller. The pop-up dialog box is SUPER ANNOYING. Thanks for nothing, Hao Li.

CleanApp
Oct 1 2009

GBBOB  This is a great app but, it needs one thing when you initially trash an application. It should present a dialog box asking if you are trashing just the app or the entire pkg. Sometimes when I download a new version of an application, it may be corrupted bad or I just do not like the update and decide to stick with the last version. As soon as you trash the app, CA kicks in and begins to scan for the tie-in files. Again, that is great if you are deleting the whole pkg and not just the app. That is where a simple dialog box could come up first asking your intentions whether you are deleting the app or everything. This way if it is just the app. trashed CA does not have to load and you do not have to wait to tell it to quit. This then saves us time and makes CA more proficient. End of Line...

ClamXav

GBBOB  This is a great program and of corse you cannot beat the price. BUT, it is a CPU HOG. When Clam Sentry is running in the background, it eats anywhere from 60 to 85% of the CPU and I am running a 2 gig G5 Tower with 3 gigs of RAM. It even causes my Mac to momentary freeze when i am in zoom mode and I hate turning it off because it has found malware and other software on my Mac that i did not download. The program does work well but it is just too much of a CPU pig. I went to Activity Monitor and it was at the top of the list eating 60 to 85% of the CPU load. I know the app is free and is even used in LCC and SLCC but there has to be a way to reduce the CPU demand. Please fix this major flaw in what could be a great virus software. End of Line...

Video Monkey
Aug 26 2009

GBBOB  FOR A BETA video monkey is off to a good start. But it is still a far cry from VisualHub even if it does use its engine. I still use VisualHub 1.3.4 for converting avi files to DVD files & converting mov files to avi. I still cannot believe how much you can fit on a single layer dvd with VisualHub. I just cannot understand why version 1.3.5 still requires a serial number since it is no longer supported. The serial number I have for 1.3.4 does not work on 1.3.5. Right now VM does not do the converting I need to do and there is no other program that gives the quality that VisualHub delivers. VM has a long way to go before it is able to fill the shoes of VisualHub. Time will tell. End of line....

FruitMenu

GBBOB  If you want an application that supports multiple clipboards then DL CopyPaste Pro. It has been around since OS 9 and is the best sw on the market. I have been using it since its inception in OS 9 and never strayed from it. It too is a stand alone application and is worth every buck. End of Line...

FruitMenu
Jul 12 2009

GBBOB  I use to use Fruit Menu until I realized what Haxies do. They put hooks into the OS so that when a system update comes up things tend to go wrong and conflicts occur. That is why I do not use FruitMenu. I you want a utility that does what FruitMenu does w/out affecting your Mac and does not need APE, get Classic Menu. It is a stand-alone application that does what FM does and more without slowing down your Mac and is not affected by updates. It has been around longer than FM and is more stable. I even found a copy that was 5 years old and it stilled worked without affecting the OS. HAXIES are nothing but a pain in the neck and I am sure there are other programs around that do the same thing as other HAXIES that are stand alone apps. Whenever updates occur, 9 out of 10 times it will be some HAXIE that will produce some type of conflict. Believe me, I was a software reviewer for my User Group and online ezines for over 20 years and I never found a HAXIE that did not cause a conflict at some point in the future. Try Classic Menu and you will see. End of line...

PS- I just want to add that I am not a developer of Classic Menu of have anything to do with the company. I am just a very satisfied user

CosmoSaver

GBBOB  I run a Mac G5 dual 2.0 with an ATI radeon 9800 Pro XP with 256 VRAM and 3 gigs of RAM. I know this is extream but it does let cosmosaver shine. The only thing I wish the author would do is update the skins of the planets. Since the original release, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have had major updates for them and their moons. It would be great if CosmoSaver reflected these greatly enhanced images.

ROBERT LEWIS  I think if it ain't broke don't fix it is the case with this software. I have used version 1.1 since Jaguar and believe it or not it still works in Tiger. All I had to do was reinstall this version again. Version 1.1 is a stand-alone application and puts no hooks into the system via the System Prefs. No static, sound output sounds great. If you can find a copy of version 1.1 (Driver Version 1.1, Panel version 1.1), use it. End of Line

Call of Duty 2
Jun 21 2004
*****

ROBERT LEWIS  If you have a slow Mac (ie G4/733MHz) you can get it to run if you get a great video card like a Radeon 9800 and lay on the RAM. I have 1.5 gigs in mine. With said, Call of Duty runs on my Mac without any loss in frame rate. Just make sure you have nothing else running (in the background too). I was also able to turn on many video effects without any problems as well. Just had to experiment with the features. I am also able to get C&C Generals to run as well under the same Mac hardware setting and that requires 1gig. So having a very good graphic card and maxing out your RAM does matter. Note:I would not go any lower than a G4/733 Mac Game on!

SPACEMANIMAGES  All I would like to say is thank you to Gideon software for doing the right thing. Now I can try to pursue this project through someone else. I am just sorry to see it go the way it did. In the meantime if anyone would like to get a DVD of over 6700 NASA images you can reach me at spacemanimages@aol.com. Again thank you Gideon software for retracting the xPak porting of xBack.
