APFELZ but if I put out a time-limited demo - you can't use it after that time and you have to serialize the application - so now you can use it on any Mac you own - without limitations... Schreiben is not based on TextEdit - but it handles the files (RTF/DOC/etc.) the same way like TextEdit... I will never build applications with serials... Serials always (and only!) displease the honest people who payed for it - not the assholes who will never pay for an application... so of course it is a compromise to disable some points - but you can test and use it as long as you want... GAZMAN First, the developers website states that Xslimmer is a "Public Beta", its not, its a beta demo, it is limited to 50MB unless you register. Second, halfway through the slimming process my fans started roaring and iStat Pro informed me that Xslimmer was using between 98 and 99.8% of the CPU and the temperature of my CPU leapt from a comfortable 46°C to a raging 72°C. Third, the program then became unresponsive and had to be force quite. Fourth, after this I decided to check things out with Activity Monitor. Activity Monitor failed to launch. No worries, following the developers instructions I had told Xslimmer to make a backup of all altered applications. However, when I replaced the now slimmed Activity Monitor with Xslimmer's backup copy of AM, it still failed to launch. Very unimpressive. JASON SWAIN From The Developer - SecretBook is much more flexible than Keychain Access, you can store as many fields as you want against each item. The interface is also easier to search and view items. You can use SecretBook for storing credit card numbers and bank details, something that Keychain access is not designed for. Some people (myself included) like having passwords in an application that is not automatically accessed by a web browser, it's more secure that way. (Version 3.0)

GAZMAN Looks promising, however I can't get the shortcut feature to work. I've tried a number of different shortcuts (some so obscure they could never be used by anything else) and none of them have worked. (Version 1.0)

GAZMAN Excellant. Fast and stable. You can choose between aqua, unified and metal interfaces. There are different themes to choose from. You can choose different search engines. The one and only feature it needs to replace Safari full-time is the ability to check spelling as you type. P.S. don't bother going to their support forums, its mostly spam. (Version 1.2.2)

KAYBEANO I really want to use Shiira but I can't, and don't know why. Every version I try higher than 1.0 simply won't open: I get the lovely brushed metal frame, no page load, and the spinning wheel of death. At first I thought this was because I use Gmail as my homepage, but it makes no difference what I use (I was able to change the homepage in 1.0 and then experiment with higher versions). Is this my computer? I'm using a G3/OSX 10.4.7. No success in getting in touch with the developers. It *looks* great, and seems to blend the best of Safari with the best of OmniWeb. But so far, this does nothing for me, since it won't bloody work anyway. (Version 1.2.2)

Shiira | Jul 20 2006 |
KAYBEANO Sorry! I figured it out. The page turning animation isn't supported on my machine, but there was no way to turn it off because it was the default position, and as soon as it tried to load a page--spinning ball of death. So what I had to do was revert to v1.0, set the homepage as blank and new pages as blank. Then I downloaded 1.2.2 again, and it picked up the changes from 1.0, and didn't try to open anything as a homepage. This enabled me to get it running at leastm and then I could go into the preferences and turn the page animation feature off. After that it worked like a charm. Given the intricacy of what I had to do to get this to work, I'd say it was a serious bug. But I'm using it now. (Version 1.2.2)

Hot Plan | Jul 14 2006 |
GAZMAN Although this looks very promising, it is also very buggy - especially for a 1.2 release. Numerous crashes, no way to bring your main window back up if you accidently close it, etc. I will keep my eye on this program, but it feels more like a beta or even alpha program than something that is ready for prime time. (Version 1.2.2)

INTUI There is an issue up to version 1.2.2, due to a Mac OS X bug, which could cause apparently random crashes, it's solved in 1.2.3. As for the main window issue, just click on the dock icon to have the main window reappear (as standard for mac applications), or use the related, configurable hotkey. While no app is ever bug free, I haven't received reports about constant, heavy crashes, except for the above mentioned bug, so if you are esperiencing serious issues, send crash reports about them, as it will help a lot in solving pending bugs. (Version 1.2.3)

WriteRoom | Jul 9 2006 |
GAZMAN This app is indeed getting there however, it needs a couple of things: 1) rtf support for bold, italics, etc. 2) better integration with Hog Bay's notetaking app Mori. On the plus side the developer has an excellent attitude towards the development of his software - check out his online forums. (Version 1.0b3)

GAZMAN It is a pity this program is no longer being developed as it is my favourite menubar launcher. I guess its because there are now a lot of free launchers that offer a lot more options, but I like the basic simplicity of this program. (Version 1.5.2)

GAZMAN I've been looking for a replacement for 'my favorite things' seeing as that program is no longer being developed. The one thing this program needs to be able to replace it is a keyboard shortcut to be able to access it. (Version 1.0.3)

GAZMAN I really like the information contained in this widget, however the analog clock makes no sense. Sure, it needs to be in 24 hour time, but shouldn't 0 hrs be at the top of the clock instead of the bottom. Perhaps some numbers around the clock face (e.g. 6 am, 9 am, 12 noon, 3 pm, etc) might help in this respect. But, as I am normally up before sunrise, this is good information to have. GAZMAN An excellent program, just what I was looking for. However one thing I would like to see is that when you have your todo's sorted by calendar they are listed by priority instead of alphabetically. I have already emailed this suggestion to the developer (I am a registered user) but so far have had no response. (Version 1.1.1)

TimeShift | Mar 11 2006 |
GAZMAN Does not take into account daylight savings time in Eastern Australia. It would be good if you could simply select your time zone from the map instead of having to try and figure out which time zone you are in from the clunky drop-down menu. If these improvements could be made it might find a permanent home on my hard drive, but not yet. (Version 1.1)

MILKDEV.COM Thanks for your comment. Daylight saving time indication will be added to the next version. Timezone selection directly from the map is a very good idea! That will sure be possible in the next release. (Version 1.1)
