Type: ReviewDate: 10 Jul 2008 19:19Sounds like people were having problems with version 1.0, version 1.1 is working perfectly on my system (C2D MacBook). Very nice effect, perfect complement to the default Leopard desktop.

Type: CommentsDate: 7 Jul 2008 19:01Some people have more self control then others. Once you start Freedom you have to restart your mac (or use some rather complex CLI commands) to get your internet back, simply quitting the app won't do it.

Type: CommentsDate: 1 Jun 2008 01:37This is my favourite screensaver from Vista (possibly favourite thing from Vista) so was glad to see a port to OSX. However, you only get about ten or seconds before the bubbles fill with dollar signs and an unregistered notice. $2.50 isn't much so I might think about it, but at the moment its only an early beta.

Type: ReviewDate: 14 May 2008 06:18Crap, crap, utter crap. After using Office 2004 under Rosetta for so long I jumped the gun and bought Office 08 early on as I need it for work. However, it is ridiculously slow to startup, beachballs if you even look at it wrong and has random crashes. I was hoping that this update would fix these issues but it hasn't so its into the trash for Office 08.
The aqua version of openoffice.org is coming along nicely, I can't wait for the final version

Type: CommentsDate: 4 Apr 2008 16:45I, for one, like this new feature. I often download torrents where I only want certain parts of the torrent. This allows me to select which parts of the torrent I want to download before it hits the download queue.

Type: CommentsDate: 3 Apr 2008 00:451) This would be much nicer if you could have it running just as a menubar app without a dock icon and window open all the time.
2) When changing the slider there is no live updating of the time you're selecting which makes it hard to get the timing just right.
3) Ten minutes of demo time is ridiculous.
4) It would be good if instead of just putting your text up on the screen it blacked out the rest of your screen for the specified time as well.
5) Having said all that, this app shows promise but at the moment is lacking in the implementation.

Type: CommentsDate: 1 Apr 2008 16:20Using Unsanity's APE and then blaming Dictate for your system being unstable by having KP's etc is completely unfair. It is well known to most Mac users that running APE is likely to make your system much less stable and that users run it at their own risk.

Type: ReviewDate: 7 Jan 2008 05:59Wow, I think my brain just melted. It took me and my partner, working together, ages to get started but we finally finished our first Kakuro puzzle. Definitely gets the old noggin' going. For a 1.0 release it feels quite polished and the developer has stated he will be adding new features.

Type: CommentsDate: 28 Dec 2007 13:56I agree. I was a beta tester of Mailplane and while I liked the convenience of Mailplane when Gmail was still running under POP3, I switched back to Mail.app when Gmail made IMAP available.

Type: CommentsDate: 1 Dec 2007 15:14Yes! Like Antichrisis below me I have been eagerly awaiting a Universal Binary of this program. I was actually expecting it be a version 2 release and I was getting ready to pay the upgrade fee to (IMHO) the best journaling program out there.

Type: CommentsDate: 21 Nov 2007 23:39The 'deal' is that his problems were to do with APE (well known to cause system problems) and yet he only gave Firefox two stars - because it didn't play nicely with a third party system hack.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 21 Nov 2007 15:13You make derogatory remarks about Firefox because you have APE installed and it doesn't play nicely with APE? If you have APE installed you have to accept that things are going to go screwy with your computer.

Type: ReviewDate: 30 Oct 2007 02:50I wonder if the poster below has even used the Mac version? I've had numerous crashes, CPU hovering over 90% and two failed burns so far. Plus I had to send them my email address just to get the privilege of getting a trial licence. I'll try again on a later version.

Type: CommentsDate: 3 Aug 2007 16:57Its such a pity this program is no longer being developed. I have tried MacJournal, Journler and heaps of others and this one fits best with what I want a journal program to be. However, it is getting left behind now that all the others are Universal Binaries and run much faster on an intel mac.

Type: CommentsDate: 27 Jul 2007 02:08Although not installed by the Install Disks, Open Firmware Password.app is present on the disks that came with my MacBook. I used Pacifist to install it into my Utilities folder where it works like a charm.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 11 Jul 2007 04:28Although this looks interesting, it doesn't even recognise .txt, .doc or .rtf files when I use the open dialog. The preferences are so disabled (in the demo) you can't even see what the preferences are (preferences is greyed out). Plus there is no way to save the format in anything other than .schrieben in the demo and see how they play with Word and other programs. $3 looks like a more than fair price, but it is way too limited at this stage.

Type: CommentsDate: 8 Jun 2007 03:49I have tried both this and VMWare Fusion (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23593) on my MacBook to run Win XP Pro. In my experience the beta version of VMWare has been much smoother than version 3 of Parallels.
![]()
Type: ReviewDate: 8 Jun 2007 03:47Some new software purchased by work had no OSX equivalent so I was finally forced to install Windows (XP Pro) on my MacBook which I installed via BootCamp. I initially tried Parallels but had lots of difficulty getting small things working (mounting USB drives, etc). I then tried VMWare Fusion and so far it has worked smoothly without any hitches. It is still at a public beta stage whereas Parallels is $80 and is at version 3.
In my experience the beta of VMWare Fusion has been better than version 3 of Parallels.

Type: CommentsDate: 29 Mar 2007 17:52sorry, didn't realise that, I had only heard about it being released with Leopard. Even stranger then that it talks about the original snow (which I own) and graphite base stations.

Type: CommentsDate: 16 Mar 2007 05:19Whenever I open it up (or go to the about dialog) I just get the message "Where is GrowlHelperApp.app?" and that's it. No way of actually getting content into FVD. I have tried copy & pasting URL, dragging web icon onto FVD's dock icon.
Crap.

Pre-order Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" from Amazon.com. It's shipping at the end of this month (March).
Shipping at the end of the month?! Where did you get this from?
P.S. a simple reboot seems to have fixed the problems I mentioned below.

Type: ReviewDate: 7 Feb 2007 03:42Nice, fun game that gets you thinking and observing. A little bit like a cross between Myst and I Spy.
My only wish at this stage was that it was a Universal Binary.
![]()
Type: ReviewDate: 29 Jan 2007 03:06A good concept and seems to work well at what it does.
However, it could be vastly improved by:
1. Allowing you to choose a location to have the .SolidFolder, e.g. in your home folder, instead of the Resource folder within the PortableSolid.app file.
2. Providing password entry in hashed form instead of as plain text.
3. Help files in languages other than Japanese.

Type: CommentsDate: 23 Jan 2007 02:13I am a high school science teacher. After playing around with Quiz Press I don't think this program is worth $30, let alone the usual price of $50. There is no spell checking (this should be an obvious feature) and the printing of the finished quizzes is well under par - 1 question per page is just ridiculous for multiple choice.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 12 Jan 2007 01:07Can't open .rtf, Word documents or import projects from other applications, e.g. CopyWrite. Until these things happen this program won't be finding a permanent home in my Applications folder.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 20 Dec 2006 14:47I agree with a couple of posters below - the time limitations on the demo are ridiculous. (As far as I'm concerned, any program that puts such limitations on a user is a demo program NOT shareware).
It looks like a nice program, but it won't even allow me to play one full game.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 9 Dec 2006 16:54Thanks for pointing that out - I hadn't realised that I could also change the computer's character.

Type: ReviewDate: 8 Dec 2006 17:52Although the game play is good, it feels like its still in early stages of development - e.g. I've only played 2 games and one them both 6-0. At that rate I would probably tire of this game quite quickly yet the developer wants $20 for it. BTW, it has a generic icon which could be vastly improved.

Type: CommentsDate: 28 Nov 2006 14:59Doze (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20699) does exactly the same thing, is free, and works flawlessly on my Intel MacBook.

Type: CommentsDate: 2 Nov 2006 00:56The application that was being slimmed at the time the fans started raging and then hung Xslimmer was the program Comic Life which shipped with the MacBook.
The temperature was that recorded by the dashboard widget iStat pro.
![]()
Type: ReviewDate: 1 Nov 2006 02:39First, the developers website states that Xslimmer is a "Public Beta", its not, its a beta demo, it is limited to 50MB unless you register.
Second, halfway through the slimming process my fans started roaring and iStat Pro informed me that Xslimmer was using between 98 and 99.8% of the CPU and the temperature of my CPU leapt from a comfortable 46°C to a raging 72°C.
Third, the program then became unresponsive and had to be force quite.
Fourth, after this I decided to check things out with Activity Monitor. Activity Monitor failed to launch. No worries, following the developers instructions I had told Xslimmer to make a backup of all altered applications. However, when I replaced the now slimmed Activity Monitor with Xslimmer's backup copy of AM, it still failed to launch.
Very unimpressive. Obviously still at an early beta stage, but they want you to fork out $10 for the privilege of helping them iron out some pretty heavy bugs.
I'll be staying well clear of this app from now on.

Type: CommentsDate: 26 Oct 2006 19:58By keeping the operating temperature lower, it shouldn't get to the point where the heatsink is expanding so much that it makes contact with the sensor cable, causing the short circuit.
Having said that, I've had my heatsink replaced under warranty. I still installed this update. The fans seem to be spinning slightly faster at idle, which should keep temps down.

Type: CommentsDate: 25 Aug 2006 18:19This, along with OmniWeb, seems to have been at beta stage for a long time for a .1 update.

Type: CommentsDate: 18 Aug 2006 04:49Apparently its not just for the moos, it also makes the MacBooks run significantly cooler, especially at idle.

Type: CommentsDate: 5 Aug 2006 03:55I'd like to try this app out but I can't be bothered downloading Stuffit to uncompress it. Why isn't this just packaged as a zip or similar?
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 3 Aug 2006 15:36Yeah, nice trial version! (sarcasm) It centres the map over your home city then straight across the middle of you desktop it writes in huge letters "NOT REGISTERED - evaluation purposes only" with the result that this is plastered right over where you want to watch. Fair enough if the developer wants to put this somewhere on the trial screen but putting it where it is has turned me off this program.

Type: CommentsDate: 17 Jul 2006 04:41I have worked out that the shortcut keys DO work from an admin account, however they don't work from a standard account (which is what I am usually logged in as).
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 16 Jul 2006 00:18Looks promising, however I can't get the shortcut feature to work. I've tried a number of different shortcuts (some so obscure they could never be used by anything else) and none of them have worked.
![]()
Type: ReviewDate: 15 Jul 2006 20:08Excellant. Fast and stable. You can choose between aqua, unified and metal interfaces. There are different themes to choose from. You can choose different search engines. The one and only feature it needs to replace Safari full-time is the ability to check spelling as you type.
P.S. don't bother going to their support forums, its mostly spam.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 14 Jul 2006 21:26Although this looks very promising, it is also very buggy - especially for a 1.2 release. Numerous crashes, no way to bring your main window back up if you accidently close it, etc.
I will keep my eye on this program, but it feels more like a beta or even alpha program than something that is ready for prime time.
![]()
Type: ReviewDate: 9 Jul 2006 21:40This app is indeed getting there however, it needs a couple of things:
1) rtf support for bold, italics, etc.
2) better integration with Hog Bay's notetaking app Mori.
On the plus side the developer has an excellent attitude towards the development of his software - check out his online forums.

Type: ReviewDate: 30 Jun 2006 18:51It is a pity this program is no longer being developed as it is my favourite menubar launcher. I guess its because there are now a lot of free launchers that offer a lot more options, but I like the basic simplicity of this program.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 30 Jun 2006 18:47I've been looking for a replacement for 'my favorite things' seeing as that program is no longer being developed. The one thing this program needs to be able to replace it is a keyboard shortcut to be able to access it.

Type: ReviewDate: 25 Apr 2006 03:03I really like the information contained in this widget, however the analog clock makes no sense. Sure, it needs to be in 24 hour time, but shouldn't 0 hrs be at the top of the clock instead of the bottom. Perhaps some numbers around the clock face (e.g. 6 am, 9 am, 12 noon, 3 pm, etc) might help in this respect.
But, as I am normally up before sunrise, this is good information to have.

Type: CommentsDate: 17 Apr 2006 20:17What you are talking about is already available from the Window menubar in Safari (and nearly every other application). Also, Safari has the benefit of opening links into tabs instead of new windows.

Type: CommentsDate: 13 Mar 2006 15:31An excellent program, just what I was looking for. However one thing I would like to see is that when you have your todo's sorted by calendar they are listed by priority instead of alphabetically.
I have already emailed this suggestion to the developer (I am a registered user) but so far have had no response.

Type: CommentsDate: 11 Mar 2006 18:18Does not take into account daylight savings time in Eastern Australia.
It would be good if you could simply select your time zone from the map instead of having to try and figure out which time zone you are in from the clunky drop-down menu.
If these improvements could be made it might find a permanent home on my hard drive, but not yet.

Type: ReviewDate: 3 Mar 2006 16:17Excellent, just what I was looking for - the enter key on my PowerBook now acts as a command key plus I now have the bonus of using shift-backspace as a forward delete.
