F10 Launch Studio
Sep 27 2008

GAKESMITH  Bad memory leak: after running for 5 minutes on my Intel iMac, it uses 256MB of real and 1.4GB virtual memory when in the background.

F10 Launch Studio

GAKESMITH  This works well for me. But it needs some way to stay at the keyboard when choosing a document from the document sidebar. Until then, LaunchBar or QuickSilver are far more efficient to use plus they both have many more features.

GAKESMITH  I like the feature set and I would use it except I already have SOHO Notes. $10 more for SOHO Notes gets you almost all the features of iClipboard plus so much more.

Ghost Action
Dec 9 2007
*****

GAKESMITH  I have been using the 1.2.22a alpha version and it has worked flawlessly for me on OS 10.5.1. I tried iGTD and OmniFocus for several days and now have gone back to Ghost Action. I find it much simpler and more reliable, especially syncing home and office computers using .mac.

GAKESMITH  I'm not sure how DevonThink helps since it has no Palm support. You seem to be mixing apples and oranges in your reasoning.

SOHO Organizer
May 25 2007

GAKESMITH  For Chronos to require 5.x users to pay for an upgrade to 6.0 is an insult to their customers. We have patiently waited for Organizer to function at a level that makes it worth starting up. For most of the version 5 cycle, Organizer has been so bug ridden, so CPU consuming, and so very slow that it has been practically unusable until the last (5.7.2) release. Now that the many of the bugs are fixed and most (not all — no due dates visible for tasks??) functions are finally in place, they want more money. Sorry, but no. There is still nothing in Organizer that makes it a whole lot better than iCal and Address Book. And Yojimbo works more reliably than Notes. So, I'm keeping the ridiculous $49 upgrade fee.

even-t
Apr 10 2007

GAKESMITH  I purchased and have used even-t since the 1.0 version. I cannot recommend purchasing the new version for these reasons because the developer has a history of making promises but not delivering. He says that 2.0, when out of beta, will synchronize via iSync. I will believe that when the functionality actually arrives.

Mori

GAKESMITH  Downgrade no more! Mori now has all the most important features of the past and more: smart folders, multiple ways to link files, smaller file size with much quicker file copying. IMO, this is the best notepad app avaible.

Yojimbo
Jan 23 2006

GAKESMITH  Why would a major developer like Bare Bones come out with one more notepad/database program? There are already so many good choices like StickyBrain, Mori, and the Devonote. Yojimbo is overpriced and feature poor when compared to these others.

FoxTrot Personal Search

GREGORY  I use this software with OS 10.4. It works like Spotlight only many times faster, it sorts the results more logically, and best of all it provides previews of the results. This is far and away more accurate and useful than Spotlight. Maybe Apple should include Foxtrot as an improvement in OS 10.5!

OmniOutliner
May 16 2005

GREG  While I own licenses to both OmniOutliner and Tao, I use Tao for this reason: Tao works properly with SpellCatcher X, OmniOutliner 3.0 does not. The same applies to Grammarian X and other programs. This is because Tao conforms to Apple’s prescribed input methods. OmniOutliner 3.0 does not.

EZNote X

GREGORY  This app is unique (at least since Skin Hunt Notes is no longer being developed) in the way it is integrated with the Finder. Add files to the EZNote document folder and they appear in EzNote. Easy to backup and never a question about import and export of compatible files.

The Missing Sync for Palm OS
Feb 18 2005
**½..

GREG  This is beta level software sold at a premium price. It usually takes three or four attempts just to get the software to start up (just like an early beta!). Unless you need a specific feature and you are willing to put up with much frustration, there is no reason to use this software when Palm Desktop is available. I’m sure they will fix the problems eventually (did you see the number of fixes in 4.0.3 update?) but by then they will charge a hefty upgrade fee.

MUDFLAP  I've never had any problems getting Missing Sync to work properly. Perhaps you're doing something wrong? Did you follow the install instructions to the T? If you didn't, you may wind up with some conduit clashes with Palm Dektop that can cause serious problems.

CATMAN  I agree with your comments. I am very unhappy with the product. I wish I had seen all the unfavorable comments before I paid for the software.

Now the only feature I hope works well is the "uninstall".

ANONYMOUS  I’ve been using OmniWeb 4 and then 5 for over a year. I’ve enjoyed the many features but it was always very slow compared to many free browsers. With this release, I've got it all: great unique features, beautiful rendering, and plenty of speed. It’s worth the price.

Nisus Writer Express
Sep 17 2004
****½

GREG SMITH  With 2.0.1, Nisus Express is my word processor of choice. It has the features and “feel” that make it just right for working in OS X. It is unfortunate that previous releases have had such annoying bugs that potential users have been put off from even trying the product. Now that has changed. It’s time to give NE a second chance.

COCOANUTPASTOR  This is an outstanding word processor. I own Word 2004, Mellel, and Nisus Writer Express, but this is the one I turn to most often because it combines an abundance of usable features, lightening speed, and rock-solid reliability. And now it works great with Spell Catcher X.
