Mac DVDRipper Pro
Aug 5 2009

G4JAY  Ok, so far this software just works. No problem. It rips DVDs no fuss no muss. I used to be a supporter of MTR and even donated (they call it a "gift") so that I could get the latest and greatest. I don't mind that aspect so much, it's the fact that there is only one dude making that software and seems to have a lot of drama in his life. As a result, the software development gets pushed to the back burner. As we all know, DVD ripping software needs to be updated constantly due to the new DVD encryption techniques. That said, I pretty much gave up on MTR because most the new DVDs I try to rip would not work. I've been using anyDVD in Windows XP (via Parallels). It works great, but I hate Windows and the process takes longer. I'm hoping MDRP is going to alleviate that. So far, looks like it! :)

G4JAY  Yeah... I never liked the icon either. An orange road cone usually means "hazard" or "avoid this" etc. What does that have to do with being a media player?

Hopefully this 1.0 version will let me play AVI videos again. The last version did not.

G4JAY  Does not work for me. Syncing one folder from my Mac Pro to My Macbook. There is a newer file on the Mac Pro. The log says it copied said file, yet when I open the file on the Macbook it was not the new version. I also noticed every time I sync, the log shows it copying the same files every time. Time for me to find another solution.

G4JAY  The developer of MTR could learn a lesson from these RipIt folks. This is how to properly publish a DVD ripping application for the Mac. You make some software and you sell it. Simple as that. No taking "donations" from people only to hold off on development of the software because of a divorce. Real tech support too. Not bashing the innocent in forum threads.

ROBOTANK  I have to agree with you. The way in which MTR 3 is distributed is a joke. You have to sign up for a forum and jump through a couple hoops just to earn the privilege of giving the dev your money. Once you've managed to "make a gift" (no minimum required amount is provided--you have to guess), you will hopefully receive the app, but you will be pestered for more money, both within the app itself and on the forums. All this for something that's been in beta for years and hasn't seen an update since January 08. I can understand wanting to have a private beta run, but at this point it's just a sham. First of all, it seems to me that any shelter from possible legal issues is rendered moot by the common knowledge of MTR 3's existence and where and how to obtain it. Second, I don't think it's quite right for the developer of a beta app, who doesn't even provide regular updates, to continually demand more money from his customers (and threaten to halt development if he doesn't get it). He could have made a fortune if he had just sold the thing as shareware and held off on all the nonsense. Now RipIt has come along and made it possible to dump MTR altogether. Thank you, RipIt developers, for making this application and for making substantial improvements with each update. Thank you also for distributing it in a reasonable fashion.

WJB3WVU  Ditto, ditto, ditto. I was a regular contributor to MTR, but it finally began to feel a little too much like extortion. Now, even as a prior donater, getting the newest version requires jumping through so many hoops that it makes your head hurt. I wrote off MTR about a year ago.

G4JAY  I bet this version still cannot rebuild a 500GB hard drive that is used for a Time Machine backup. Disk Warrior has a limitation... if you have a lot of files on a big drive, it does not have enough RAM to rebuild that volume. I have 8GB RAM. Tech Support told me there is nothing they can do unless they re-write Disk Warrior to be able to use more RAM. Ludicrous if you ask me!

It's the weirdest thing. It only started happening a couple months ago. I suspect Apple needs better drivers for this card. It's not heat related either. I can erase the artifacts with a white window OR setting my screens to a lower resolution. Annoying!

Another idea is to try aticcelerator to lower the clock speeds of the VRAM and GPU, I think it works with the X1900 XT—dblchk.

DISPLACED  Umm... Apple DVD Player is certainly able to output digital 5.1 audio (any format - PCM, DD5.1, DD-EX, DTS etc.) via an optical port.

Open DVD Player's preferences then (with the optical port connected to a receiver), choose Digital Audio from the Audio Output drop-down box in the General tab.

This works on both my MacBook Pro's analogue/optical combo port and my PowerPC Mac Mini with an external USB M-Audio sound device featuring an optical output.

Having said that, VLC's fast forward/rewind is better than Apple's rather odd solution where you set the speed in a menu (??!!).

G4JAY  Once again another unique screensaver from a cool developer. Well worth the price! I have bought three screensavers from them. Space Wars, Desktop Aquarium and this new Dolphins.

My only negative comment is the fact that the dual monitor support needs some tweaking when in "desktop mode". On my Dual 1Ghz MDD G4 with a Radeon 9800 card, all I get is a while background on the secondary monitor.

Overall, I love the screensavers from these guys. Great stuff! Keep up the great work!
