FYREFLYE The reports here of OmniWeb's death have not only been greatly exaggerated, but with the recent installation of the WebKit engine and achievement of 100% Acid3 compliance OmniWeb has become simply the best Mac browser available. As an alpha release it's not yet for everybody, but now that it's free everybody can still play with it and see what the original Mac-only browser has become. Not bug free, but getting there. It's already progressed to 5.9.2 alpha heading toward an eventual OmniWeb 6. The "Sneaky Peeks" page is here: http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/download/sneakypeek/ (Version 5.9.1)

FYREFLYE OmniGroup has corrected the implications left by the original press release with this follow up: "OmniWeb is now free. See the press release for more information. Unfortunately, the release indicates that OmniWeb is "not currently under active development." However, the company "isn't dropping the products from its arsenal" and future updates may be made "as engineering resources allow." As anyone who's followed OmniWeb's development knows, OmniGroup hasn't sold enough copies of its browser to make it commercially viable, so most of the company's resources are going into developing its profitable products. There'll still be tech support for the browser and, hopefully, further refinements. (Version 5.9)

FYREFLYE Now that OmniWeb is finally free I hope more Mac users will try out this excellent alternative to Safari and Firefox. Its ability to customize individual web sites for cookie retention/rejection/erase when closing browser, for ad blocking/ad retention, for font size, etc. is matched by no other browser. Download the ad.subtract CSS from MacUpdate and use it as a style sheet and you have an additional level of ad blocking to use on a site by site basis. It still doesn't pass the Acid 3 test but it's now faster than Firefox and almost as fast as Safari. (Version 5.9)

ORION MK. V OmniWeb is great. I got a license for an older version, but never renewed because there are just too many good FREE alternatives and between FireFox for compatibility and plug-ins, and Safari for speed and daily use, I just don't need another alternative, save for platform testing. I find that Opera, as funky as it's GUI is, is good for testing "roughly" how sites will look on PCs without having to start up my old PC. So, sad as OW's imminent -- if not immediate -- demise is, I'm happy to see OmniGroup making the rational choice to focus on it's other fine apps. (Version 5.9)

FYREFLYE My only big problem now with iCab (other than its inabiity to render GMail pages correctly) is that there's no password mangement function. Despite the shift to webkit iCab doesn't access the Keychain automatically and there's no feature in the browser to store passwords. For all iCab's speed it slows down work considerably to have to be continually opening the Keychain manually in order to enter secure sites that don't store permanent cookies. I understand the folks at 1Password are looking into the possibility of supporting iCab, but that would double its cost for those of us who don't need 1Password for our current browsers. I'm going to keep iCab on my MacBook in case of further improvements but I'll continue to use Demeter, which is almost as fast, as my default browser. (Version 4.0)

MCDAN333 I have problems with this app too. First of all, I can't click on the icon at all - I can only click on the file name. I think that might be what the original commenter meant when he said it couldn't be launched, moved, etc. Second, when I do double click the name to launch, it quits immediately and generates a crash log. IAMMATT You you please tell me what version of OSX your running (10.4.x or 10.5.x) and on what platform (ppc/i386) I think that the problem is on your machine, but I'll see what I can do. (Version 1.0)

TONYINLONDON Same here. I'm on a 2GHz MacBook, 1GB RAM, running 10.4.11 and all latest Apple updates. The app downloads and uncompresses OK, and appears OK on the Desktop. However you can't select it by single-clicking on its icon - you CAN however select it by single-clicking on its name. Equally it doesn't open if you double-click on its icon; File->Open or double-clicking on the app's name opens it but it immediately crashes with a very short traceback: Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x7541536e 0 libobjc.A.dylib 0x90a594c0 objc_msgSend + 16 1 com.apple.ASApplication 0x00001fea main + 24 2 com.apple.ASApplication 0x00001fa6 start + 54 I'm not sure what that means, but it looks as though there's something fundamentally wrong with the way it's built. FYREFLYE It's not just that it doesn't *show* the Bookmarks Bar; on mine that whole set of bookmarks folders has completely disappeared. I've reverted to the pre beta 2.0.0.10, which is really fast, very stable, and which retains all the extensions. The final release for 2.0.0.10 may come as soon as this week. (Version 3.0b1)

BRUCE_Y This alone is a good reason to update my 10.4.9 to .11 (i bypassed .10 - too many bug reports for me). Especially as one of the newspaper sites I used to access sent me a message recently that my Safari 2.0.4 was too old, and I had to use Safari 3... (Version 10.4.11)

HEAVY_SHOWER 10.4.11 does *not* give me Safari 3. How do you come by that?? It gives Safari 2.0.4 (419.3) (Version 10.4.11)

Apple Mac OS X | Nov 15 2007 |
MACUPDATE ADMIN I've got Safari Version 3.0.4 (523.12) here, due to the 10.4.11 update. I did have the most recent publicly released Safari beta installed prior to this OS update. (Version 10.4.11)

Apple Mac OS X | Nov 15 2007 |
HEAVY_SHOWER Just what I thought, after I posted the above: *had* I had Safari 3 installed. Of course. I wonder if I could install 3 by getting it with Pacifist? (Version 10.4.11)

Apple Mac OS X | Nov 15 2007 |
BRUCE_Y Though I haven't installed yet, I did open the 10.4.11 combo updater to see some of what's there, and in the combo installer (180.8MB) is (as per their version.plist files): Safari 3.0.4 (523.12) - new new Preview 3.0.9 (409) - same ol as in OSX 10.4.9 Activity Monitor 1.5 (54) - same ditto DU 10.5.6 (198.12) - same ditto But there are obviously other apps and most changes probably 'under the hood.' So I am guessing that you did not need to have the beta of 3 installed for new 3.0.4 to be installed . Otherwise, how could they say that "This update also includes Safari 3, the latest version of Apple's web browser." (Version 10.4.11)

HEAVY_SHOWER For crying out loud: I was just about to post the odd thing that with Pacifist looking into the Combo update, I'm only seeing Safari 2.0.4. Well, duh, that's because the Combo link for Tiger 10.4.11 *is* for Tiger 10.4.TEN! And it's written clearly enough, except that I took it for granted that the Combo link included in the latest Tiger download page, here, would be for none other than for Tiger 10.4.11! I just downloaded 10.4.11. Lol. (Version 10.4.11)

FYREFLYE The Intel version of 2.0.0.8 recommended by jhersco is as fast to load and render as the Intel 3.0 Preview, and accepts all the current Extensions, which the Preview does not. Apparently this developer is creating Intel versions for each new Ff update as it is released, with your choice of Aqua or Firefoxy widgets. (Version 2.0.0.8)

Ad Subtract | Oct 12 2007 |
FYREFLYE Yes, it does block the ads that SafariBlock and Saft don't get, and it kills Flash ads too. Safari's lack of a workable ad filtering system has been one of the main reasons I don't use it as my default browser. I'm still waiting for something comparable to Firedox's NoScript before I change over, but AdSubtract is a big step forward. (Version 10-2007)

FYREFLYE I don't need a browser with this particular set of features byt it sure is fast! My current speed standard is Camino, and there's no comparison. I'm not sure I'll keep Flock (it needs an ad blocking feature like Firefox and Camino) but I'll certainly enjoy playing with it for awhile. (Version 0.9.1)

Mac-Zone Junk Stopper Light | Aug 6 2007 |
FYREFLYE Well, I downloaded and restarted but I still get ads on Safari, notably the especially annoying animated one on MyYahoo!, while it blocks half the title header on the NY Times page. More alarming, I can't Find any evidence of the existence of Mac-Zone on my HD other than the .dmg, the install package and the receipt. Without knowing what this app is exactly supposed to do (there's no instructions) I have to wait for more evidence and more feedback before I judge it. (Version 1.0)

ANDREWA121 The package installs a replacement /etc/hosts file (/etc is an invisible directory with UNIX system files and the like). The replacement file basically redirects certain domain names (associated with advertisements) to a localhost address, with the ultimate result being that the ads that the webpage is trying to load are not found when your browser looks for them on your local machine. it's a low-level hack. I haven't tried it, so I can't say how well it works, but for now, I'll stick to either PithHelmet or SafariBlock (Version 1.0)

Demeter | Jul 30 2007 |
FYREFLYE Whoops! Since posting my previous comment I made the mistake of closing Demeter. When I tried t reopen it al my Preferences were gone along with the imported Bookmarks. Strangely, the History was intact. I restored all my settings, closed it again, and the same thing occurred when I tried to reopen it. Worse, I found two copies of the Application itself parked in different spots on my HD. I would prefer to have reported this to the Developer but his page has no link for reporting bugs and I'm sure Apple has no interest in hearing about this browser. Sadly, I've deleted it. Should the Developer come up with some suggestions, provide a support page or even Installation instructions, I'd be willing to try it again. (Version 1.2.2)

FYREFLYE Better a late reply than never. I really want to like Demeter but I've tried several times since my first post here to use it and have had the same problems as I mentioned originally. I suspect my particular issue may be that I have too many bookmarks accumulated over the years and that once imported they destabilize a browser with a very small a footprint (I had the same problems with Shiira.) Thanks for the link to the support forums. (Version 1.2.2)

Demeter | Jul 30 2007 |
FYREFLYE What El-Cravito said. Actually, as I recall, Shiira had a serious bug even in the original release, and it's gotten buggier with each new one. I have to say this is the first set of default icons on any browser that I've ever reallly liked. And a small footprint browser like this one (smaller even than the original Shiira) appeals to me. But there appears to be at least one major problem. Demeter isn't automatically accessing the Keychain for passwords. Have I missed a way to turn that function on? (Version 1.2.2)
