BEZIERBOY Yeah, it had its charms compared to iStumbler, but sorry folks, not worth the $9.95 more than $0 to me. If it were a nominal fee like $2 I'd consider paying as that's what I'd say its special features are worth. Of course I don't use those features much, all I want is a basic listing of available networks, their encryption, and signal strength 99% of the time.

Apple Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update | Mar 2 2009 |
FOLLEREC I think you're confused. iPhoto is bundled with Macs, yes. But iPhoto isn't integrated into Mac OS X. You get it for free when you get a Mac. IE is bundled with Windows, yes. It is also integrated into Windows as part of the operating system. Here's something you can try... delete iPhoto. Move it to the Trash. Empty your Trash. Reboot. Your OS still works? Good. Now if you want iPhoto back, reinstall it from your restore discs that come with your Mac. No need to reinstall. Just install iPhoto. Now try this... uninstall IE. I mean not just using the "Set Program Access and Defaults" thing. Use the "Add or Remove Programs" in Control Panel. Well? Anyway, what was your problem again? Ah, updating things to be able to preview RAW in Finder... are you talking about thumbnails or QuickLook? If QuickLook, ask your camera manufacturer to develop the QuickLook plugin for their format. Or try to look for something generic, maybe UFRaw QuickLook plugin. For thumbnails... I don't think it's Apple's responsibility to generate thumbnails for all possible formats in Finder, especially if the main application for the format isn't installed. That's just me. You don't have to agree with me. (Version 2.5)

Apple Safari | Feb 24 2009 |
FOLLEREC Works great so far. Things I noticed: 1. Webkit immediately used the newer UI without any issues. 2. After changing a plist file in 1Password (as per their support forum's instructions), 1Password continues to work without issues. 3. Foxmarks for Safari continues to work without issues. 4. ClickToFlash continues to work without issues. 5. No more blue progress bar in the URL field. They probably (hopefully) missed this during testing. 1. The tab bar on top now. More space. Although the UI now looks kinda weird. 3. Webkit also still works. 4. ... and the other things that still work as I mentioned above. :) 1. The tab bar closing behaviour is still the same. I love how chrome does this. Open a lot of tabs. Then start closing them with the mouse. The tabs don't resize, allowing you to close them until there's nothing under the cursor. In Safari, the moment it reaches a certain count, it starts resizing to the full width of the window. 2. Cover Flow... seems gimmicky in a browser. Hope they keep updates coming. Wish they would make the update builtin to Safari so I can keep updating this thing until they go Final (like the nightly updates in Webkit). (Version 4.0b1)

Zip Mac Files for PC | Feb 22 2009 |
FOLLEREC I think what is misleading about all this is the subheading in MacUpdate "Create zip files that PC users can use.". It's implying that the current zip files created through Finder can't be used by PC users. If you just change that to something like "Create zip files without __MACOSX and .DS_Store that confuse the heck out of PC users." I think you'll get less "complaints" if that is changed. Honestly... when I was a PC user, I never understood those files and I never complained or wondered about them. Now that I'm a Mac user, I regularly send out zip files with those things in them. Never had a complaint, never had a question about them either. I think seeing __MACOSX clearly sends the message that that folder is just for Mac OS X and not Windows, and the .DS_Store file has no icon so no one wonders why they can't open it. Won't rate this program, as I never tried it. Just thought I'd give my 2 cents worth. (Version 1.8)

Zip Mac Files for PC | Apr 8 2009 |
FULMAR2 Thanks for your straight-forward input, and good suggestion. I will see if I can change the header with MacUpdate to help people better understand the purpose of this product. Also, you're right - many (skilled) PC users have no problem figuring out how to deal with zip files created on the mac using the right click + create archive feature. Our website even has video instructions to help users use this (free) method if they want. Meanwhile, there are still many, many PC users who would get a zip file created in this way, and be "uh... what?" If you have clients / vendors who fit this profile, and you don't have time to spend educating them on the wonders of a Mac, and why Mac Zip files look this way, then this program can help you out. Also, as mentioned before, many of our customers use automation to process zip files - and their automation is expecting a specific directory structure. Rather than jam their automation, or make them re-write code, we simply cater to their needs by giving them a file that they can use. It's simple. (Version 1.8)

FOLLEREC Hi Roustem! Thank you for replying. Way before I read your reply I've decided to give 1Password another shot. The Pro is still a Pro in my opinion. Regarding my Cons: 1. I was looking at the export function, and I would like to know just how secure the HTML export is. This sounds like a nice alternative to a cross-platform application. I can put this on a TrueCrypt USB flash drive and not worry too much. But, without using TrueCrypt, just how hackable is the HTML export alone? Will someone with enough time be able to decipher what my password is based on the javascript code? The PDF sounds like an alternative, but not all computers I use have PDF readers. 2. I've already found the blogs with instructions on how to create custom Wallet Items and you are right, I wouldn't want to mess with that as it seems it requires modifying files in the application bundle. It is great to know that you guys are working on the custom Wallet Item for a future release. If that gets released, I certainly wouldn't mind paying for an upgrade should it be required. If it gets released within the 2.9.x version (which my MacHeist license seems to work with) then all the better! =) Thanks for the tip regarding the Firefox Master Password. I've always used it, by the way. I hope my review didn't put other people off of your application (which is why I kept it at a neutral 3 stars). It really is a great piece of software. It just didn't fit my initial needs. Hopefully the HTML export is secure and the custom Wallet Items gets implemented soon! (Version 2.9.8b1)

FOLLEREC Got this as a freebie from MacHeist. Was excited about it. But I don't think I'm gonna use this long term. First the thing I liked: 1. Cross-browser integrated keychain with one-click autofill. ... and that's it. What scared me off: 1. Not cross-platform. Yeah you can tell me to export it, to use the online 1password invite-only thing. That's not cross-platform. I use my passwords everywhere. 2. No custom "Wallet Item". It's fixed to the fields of what the developers want you to use. So for my ATM, I have to use something like "Bank Account (US)" when I'm in fact in a different country. Minor yes, but what about government cards? Where I live, we don't only have a Driver's License and Social Security. I have no way of using the nice "Wallet" feature for those. Either I use one of the built-in items, and get the wrong label when I'm viewing it in the window, or I use a "Secure Note". If I use the "Secure Note" feature, I might as well just use plain text files and TrueCrypt. Or use a NeoOffice spreadsheet and password protect that. Those are just as secure, plus they're cross-platform formats. Seriously, the pro is great. But I might as well just use Firefox's builtin password saving feature. Yeah I'll have to manually transfer those to other machines, but then, this isn't cross-platform, so nothing much I can do about it if I were to use 1Password. For $40, not worth it. Maybe $20. Good thing I got this for free. (Version 2.9.7)

ROUSTEM KARIMOV Thank you taking the time to leave a review, FOLLEREC! I am happy to know that you like the cross-browser integration with one-click login. I also recommend to look at "Bookmarks" menu in 1Password browser toolbar menu. It will save you even more time by combining multiple actions: Navigate to the web site + Fill username/password + Click submit. Another feature you may like is filling credit card information when shopping online. With one-click you can automatically fill credit card number, cardholder's name, and expiration date. This will save quite a few trips to retrieve the credit card from the wallet and then type the 16-digit number without spaces. I am sure you will love the the strong password generator that automatically saves all generated passwords so that you do not have to spend any time to save them somewhere else. And there are many other features that you will find useful. Also, do not forget the option to automatically sync all your Macs and sync data with the native iPhone application. Now let me address your concerns: 1. Cross-platform support. Our focus is on Mac and iPhone and I would rather spend our time on making Mac and iPhone applications the absolutely best they can be. We will provide limited cross-platform support in one of the next releases but it won't be close to what you see on Mac. 2. Custom Wallet items. This is a work in progress and I am sure you will be very impressed when you see it done. There are a few blog posts from 1Password enthusiasts that show how to add custom items yourself but it requires work from you and I cannot recommend that. If you have any other questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us via email (support@agilewebsolutions.com) or join our forum: http://support.agilewebsolutions.com/ Co-author of 1Password (Version 2.9.8b1)

1Password | Dec 28 2008 |
ROUSTEM KARIMOV Thank you for the kind words, FOLLEREC! The export to HTML is currently using Blowfish encryption and we consider it secure. You won't be able access the encrypted information without knowing the master password. Still, it is important to use a long master password/passphrase to be protected against the brute force attacks. Please note that not all information in the HTML file (and in 1Password database) is encrypted. Similar to OS X Keychain, some of the information is stored in plain text. This include the name of each entry and the web domain of the login. All usernames, passwords, and notes are encrypted. (Version 2.9.8b1)

TrueCrypt | Oct 19 2008 |
FOLLEREC Just installed TrueCrypt and I find that, despite some quirks, it's great for my purpose: accidentally losing my flashdrive that contains confidential company information. I sometimes have to bring home confidential stuff like financial documents, sometimes passwords in plaintext (i really should start using KeePassX for that), etc. Now I encrypt my entire flashdrive. This way, if I drop it or lose it or get mugged, any confidential information I have on me is protected. Whoever gets my flashdrive can have it. It's great too that it's cross platform, although the compile on CentOS 5.2 was a bit of a hassle (not enough clear documentation on this yet). But at least I can use my encrypted flashdrive on Linux, Windows, and, last but not least, my Mac. DMGs are great but obviously out of the question when you're working on multiple platforms like me. TrueCrypt is the solution for me. (Version 6.0a)

FOLLEREC Have you ever thought that it may be that there's something wrong with your computer? Have you ever attempted to ask for support in their forums? If there was a serious problem with this, and, as you accuse, that it is a virus/trojan, a lot more people would be complaining. Considering that you get the software for free, you seriously should consider helping out by troubleshooting your issues and see if it's really KeePassX's issues or simply your computer. Considering that the software is open source, I highly doubt it is a virus/trojan as you accuse. Running on a MacBook with Leopard 10.5.5, all latest updates. No issues whatsoever. Happily using my password file with both a Windows machine and a Linux machine. While the interface could be better on a Mac, this is probably the most secure you can get in a password manager. FOLLEREC Like I said in a previous post, if you think NeoOffice is slow, you haven't really tried MS Office 2008. NeoOffice was faster in my testing. This on a Macbook with 2gb of RAM. My comment regarding OpenOffice.org going aqua... remember, they're basically releasing a 1.0 product. Which means it's gonna have a lot of bugs. NeoOffice, on the other hand, has had quite a big of usage already. It's been used and tested since it's Aqua Beta release on August, 2006. NeoOffice | Mar 24 2008 |
FOLLEREC NeoOffice isn't built with Java. But it does use it for rendering stuff like the menubar, and the general interface. But the code of NeoOffice is still OpenOffice.org, which means a bunch of C (or is it C++?). So Java is definitely required. FYI, if you think NeoOffice is slow and clunky... you haven't tried MS Office 2008. It's slow to launch, and beachballs at certain times, with the fan on my sister's MacBook going full blast. NeoOffice actually launches faster. In fact, MS Office 2008 doesn't feel any faster than MS Office 2004, despite the fact that it is a Universal Binary. Although I must say that PowerPoint transition effects are quite nice. (Version 2.2.3 patch 1)

NeoOffice | Mar 24 2008 |
FOLLEREC I see the problem as well. Looks like an OpenOffice.org bug, rather than a NeoOffice bug. I suggest you do the following: 1. As I don't have OpenOffice.org handy, if you do, test it with that (even on Windows or Linux) and see if the bug occurs there. 2. If you don't have OpenOffice.org to test with, go to the NeoOffice forums to have people there test it. If the bug occurs with NeoOffice only, file a bug in NeoOffice's bugzilla. If the bug occurs with OpenOffice.org as well, it's most probably an OpenOffice.org bug. You should file a bug report with them. As always suggested by NeoOffice people, don't even mention NeoOffice as OpenOffice.org developers will close the bug without looking at it if you mention NeoOffice. (Version 2.2.3 patch 1)

FOLLEREC Finally updated for Leopard. Was planning on doing it myself, but realized I do not have any coding skills at all. Great little menubar applet that just simply shows whether I have an Internet connection or not. I personally set it to "Small Aqua Spheres", which looks great on Leopard's (and Tiger's) menubar. FOLLEREC Aside from the looks, this is probably one of the best FTP client on the Mac right now. It's fast and stable. I've migrated from Cyberduck because Cyberduck doesn't have the 2-pane interface I am used to and need to properly manually sync up folders. Things that do need fixing: 1. Icon theme! The icons are replaceable... I hope someone creates Mac-looking icons for this. 2. The Site Manager interface is horrible... too Windows-ish. Could definitely use some simplification and usability improvements. 3. General UI look... most probably because of wxWidgets. 4. Site Manager doesn't use Keychain. Not a requirement, but would add to security, as right now FileZilla uses a plaintext XML to save everything... including passwords. (Version 3.0.5.1)

Overall, easy to use, generally quick and light on the resources, and just plain great. Wishes to give this a 5-star rating: 1. Directly edit files in the Disk Browser view... right now I can read the files, but have to double-click (or press Enter) just to edit the document in a new window. 2. Tabbed-document interface... the drawer is getting old and useless. 3. Code Folding... although I'm sure Barebones wouldn't want that in a giveaway. Otherwise, still a great editor. VMware Fusion | Jun 14 2007 |
FOLLEREC So far so good. I only need this to run Linux servers for development, sysadmin-ing, learning, and testing. Works just as well as on PCs. I paid for the pre-order price of $40 without hesitation. The only thing I hate about it is that, just as with the PC versions, you have to click on the screen to be able to type on a Linux console. With Parallels, as long as the window has the focus, I can type straight away. This only affects me because I install all my Linux VMs without any GUI. Of course, I had to weigh in on whether to upgrade to Parallels 3 (I already bought 2.5), or pre-order this. What made me decide on VMware Fusion? 1. More VMware info available online (due to plenty of Windows and Linux users. I believe the VM engine is basically the same.). 2. Share VMs between other VMware products. Definitely useful when it comes to sharing with a PC user (VMware Player! and VMware Server!). 3. Parallels support sucks (although I haven't actually interacted with VMware support yet. But see #1. That and I believe they employ a few open source developers). 4. Beta 4 already works great! Please remember, I use this exclusively for virtualizing Linux, not Windows. (Version 1.0b4)

FOLLEREC Features - I find the addition of more supported devices for iSync a feature. I'd rather they provide plugins in a more timely basis rather than having to wait for a major update just to support the latest phone. Ease of Use - Regular style install. No problems whatsoever for me. Value - Always great to get updates for free. I'd wish 10.5 would be free but that's just wishful thinking. Stability - So far, I haven't had any problems. All my apps still work (and that's a lot). As always, good (but not great) update. Running on the lowest-end Macbook 1.8ghz Core Duo. (Version 10.4.9)

Buddi | Jan 6 2007 |
FOLLEREC Ever since I've switched over to a MacBook, I've noticed that Buddi runs a little slow. It says on the MacUpdate page that it's a Universal Binary. But when I look at the Get Info page of Buddi.app, it says it's a PowerPC app. I know it's Java based, which should be cross-platform, but even Cyberduck shows it's Universal. Other than that, still a great app! (Version 2.0.3)

WYATT When running Java applications, if the JavaApplicationStub is not a Universal Binary (such as in Buddi's case), OS X will automatically launch the correct Universal version of it. When you run it, you should be able to verify this via Console.app - there should be a message saying that 'This application is using a PPC version of JavaApplicationStub; an Intel version will be used instead'. While I don't have a MacBook myself yet, I tried running Buddi on one, and verified that this is indeed the case. As for Cyberduck, it is a Cocoa-java application, while Buddi is a pure Java application (using Swing as the GUI). To make a long and boring technical story short, they are compiled and launched in different ways, and are not equivalent to each other. Since Buddi is designed to be cross platform, I have no plans to convert it to Cocoa-java, as it would lose all cross platform support. Basically, whatever slowdowns you are experiencing should not be due to the processor architecture; it may be due to an increase in the number of transactions, although that really should not be noticeable. Once I get some more time, and the volume of feature requests decreases a little, I may take some more time to profile Buddi and see where most of the time is being spent. If you give me a little more information, I may be able to give you a better answer (for instance, where do you notice the slowdown? Is it at startup? Is it when you resize a window? When you add a transaction?)

FOLLEREC Absolutely great and simple personal finance application. It's fairly simple in that to track finance, you just have to transfer around amounts between expense types and accounts. It's a lot easier and efficient to use than my old way of using a NeoOffice spreadsheet to track everything. Plus great simple piechart reports. I only wish it could get multiple currency support (per account). An additional plus for people who cherish their data... Buddi is multiplatform. Which means you can transfer around your data between (almost) anything that can run a Java 1.5 app. Something I absolute require with anything that deals with very important data. (Version 2.0)

PDFView | Oct 23 2006 |
FOLLEREC What would make this a killer app for me is if it could integrate Formulate's PDF overlay code so that we have a nice and simple PDF "editing" app that's free. In case anyone wondered what Formulate is, just do a search here. It's a nice PDF overlay-style editing app, with a weird interface. This + that would be wonderful. (Version 0.9)

VLC Media Player | Oct 15 2006 |
FOLLEREC So far 0.8.5 doesn't work well on Intel Macs. It exhibits a green diagonal line in the video output window. The nightlies are fine, but there are some stability problems there (audio sometimes doesn't work; at times the app itself is too slow on my MacBook). I've since switched to using the combo: for playing all my video needs. At least these work very well with what I have. If VLC gets right back on track with version 0.8.6 or whatever for Intel Macs, I'll switch back in a heartbeat (or probably not). (Version 0.8.5)

FOLLEREC This, together with Perian, NicePlayer, and MPlayer OSX, completes my video playing requirements for probably any type of video (or at least those that I do play). (Version 1.7.2)

LIGHTWORSHIP CAN NOT GET AUDIO FROM AVI FILES IN QUICKTIME? GO TO http://perian.org/ DOWNLOAD AND YOU WILL. WHY NOBODY CAN JUST COME OUT AND SAY THIS IS BEYOND ME. I HOPE THIS MAKES YOU AS HAPPY AS IT DOES ME. (Version 1.7.6)

Burn | Oct 15 2006 |
FOLLEREC Absolutely wonderful app. Does all your burning needs. I particularly want this for the DVD Video burning feature alone. My only question is... when I've burned a DivX video into a DVD Video, I can play the video fine on any DVD player, but I can't seem to fast-forward or rewind. I'm not exactly sure if this is an issue with my video, or with the way things are converted. I've converted a DivX video using iDVD and I can scroll through the video without any problems. Otherwise, great app! (Version 1.5u)

Perian | Sep 30 2006 |
FOLLEREC I've been looking around for a package like this for quite awhile now. Windows already has the K-Lite Codec Pack. Thank goodness there's Perian for Mac OS X. This, together with NicePlayer (and Flip4Mac) makes the perfect combination for video playback. It's a little more to install versus just installing VLC or MPlayer, but it seems just a better combination. Particularly on an Intel Mac, as VLC doesn't seem to do well with certain files on Intel yet. (Version 0.5)

NicePlayer | Sep 30 2006 |
FOLLEREC NicePlayer, together with Perian and Flip4Mac completes my video playing requirements. Although a lot more to install, it currently beats both MPlayer and VLC (on Intel) by a wide margin. (Version 0.94.1)

FOLLEREC It seems you forgot to change the version info. It still says 1.0u in the About window and in the Get Info window instead of 1.1u. (Version 1.1u)

Stellarium | Jun 19 2006 |
FOLLEREC Based on forums on Stellarium.org, it seems that the framework SDL_mixer is also required (available at http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_mixer/). This wasn't mentioned in the README file. Install it the same was as the other two SDL frameworks. Hope this helps others. (Version 0.8)

FOLLEREC Same problem as parent. Cannot load Stellarium even with the correct frameworks installed properly. Crash log says it cannot find both SDL frameworks even though they exist in /Library/Frameworks (Version 0.8)

FOLLEREC Here's a little tip... get the latest revision. It now has support for passive scanning using Airport Extreme cards. Some say it requires at least 10.4.3 and the AirPort Update 2005-001 from Apple to work. As of this writing, the latest available revision is r76. There is a prebuilt binary package available as well for r75. I got r76 from http://www.ethicalhack.org/downloads.php . Of course, if you don't trust the source, compile it yourself.
