Kensington Wireless Desktop
Jan 21 2007

FNORD  Oh, where to start.

OK, first of all, I bought a Wireless Desktop for Mac (wireless keyboard & Mouse). It worked great for all of four hours or so. After that, the mouse was dead and the keyboard would skip abou every third key. The people at kensington were kind enough to send me a replacement set & told me I could do whatever I wanted with the old set. This tells me that they've obviously had a lot of trouble with this item.

Secondly, I think their driver software sucks. In the pref pane for the keyboard, you're only allowed to set three keys (and two of them are the same key!) and whether or not the F-lock functions are set at startup.

The forward/back keys are erratic in function: in some apps they work as expected, while in others they function to switch apps.

I also don't like that there aren't any indicator lights to let you know if you've got caps lock, num lock or f-lock set or not.

If you must use this hardware, I recommend using ControllerMate to handle the extra buttons.

FNORD  Why not just set a hot corner for the screen saver of your choice and enable the "Password Required" option? Same effect, no cost.

BILL  It works fine for me with a Natural Keyboard Pro, a Microsoft Office Keyboard and a Natural Keyboard Elite. Of course, I don't have a wireless keyboard, nor do I use non-US key maps, so those problems don't apply to me.

The only thing that kept it from getting a 5 in features is that in the "Advanced" tab you can't put in combination keystrokes, i.e. Shift+Command+F3. If that feature was added, it'd definitely get a 5. It would also be nice if it'd support non-M$ keyboards, but I don't expect that to happen.

Ease of Use: 5. A bit tedious to set up, but easy enough.

Value: 5. It does exactly what it says it does, and it's free.

Stability: 5. It's never given me any problems ever since v.1 on OS9.

Norton Utilities
Dec 2 2002

ANONYMOUS  I got soured n Norton when I bought & installed NU for X. As soon as I finished the installation & restarted, I got error messages that a file named "symfs.kext" & another I can't recall were not secure. When I asked Norton, they said it must be some other program's fault. I ended up scrapping NU & reinstalling X from scratch.

Anyone else see this? Has Norton fixed it?

Extended Software Updater

ANONYMOUS  Checking the developer's webpage for this program, I see that it'll work with software that the makers of have made compatible w/this program. Sounds nice, but I'll wait until some other software makers have come on board. Until then, it's just a way to keep current on this software maker's stuff(Alphaomega software, IIRC). BTW, that's probably why the last reviewer saw that this program would only update itself.

I can't really actually rate the software until it becomes useful, but I feel that at present it rates a 1 for value. Get some other software makers on board and that should (hopefully) go up.
