iCalCopy
Aug 23 2008
****.

FILIPP  I was looking for a way to easily move local iCal (v 3.0.4) data to the company's iCal server. You can do it pretty easily by just moving the local ics files and deleting the cache, but iCalCopy was much nicer and I didn't even have to close iCal!

Would be worth 5 stars if it had a better UI in terms of differentiating between local and remote calendars (they just show up as one flat list and the only way you can distinguish them is the order they appear in iCal, if you have similar names).

Btw, also copies todos!

Many thanks to the dev! ;)

KiSS Maclink
Dec 8 2007

FILIPP  Works also with Leopard (10.5.1) however you must:

- System Preferences > Security > Firewall > Set access for specific...

- Add KiSS MacLink to the list of allowed applications

- Launch the app, start sharing and OK the few prompts about java trying to establish a network connection.

Otherwise the Mac will show up in the device list, but the contents will be empty.

Tested with 2.5.1 and 1600 HD player.

RapidWeaver
May 25 2007

FILIPP  I think it should be emphasized that this is not a free upgrade for current 3.5.x users! So please don't just overwrite your old install (like I did).

Here's a link the previous version for anyone who did the same mistake:

http://www.realmacsoftware.com/downloads/rapidweaver_351.dmg

I was pleasently surprised when the 3.2 - 3.5 transition was free but must admit that that 3.5 also brought along quite a few problems. Nothing show-stopping but I was kinda hoping for a final free bugfix release and automatically assumed this was it.

Menuet
Mar 28 2007

FILIPP  For the most part, I like Menuet alot. You can probably find the same functionality in a combination of different freeware bits (or maybe even a single app, I'm probably way behind here by now), but it's the whole package that made me whip out the credit card.

Having said that, it's important that all the different pieces work well and that's not always the case with the current version. last.fm support is extremely shaky with constant complaining about connection timeouts (while the official conduit works just fine).

The conduit also says it will try to re-submit the info but in reality you have to manually re-enable last.fm support for it to do so.

The remote control/shortcut feature is extremely useful, but the Mute function doesn't really mute - it turns the volume to zero and then back to full (!) again. This can cause quite a shock if you normally have the volume at half.

Art Collector is less of a killer feature now that iTunes can fetch all the artwork in the iTS (just change the album name). Nice to see that it has been updated though and it *does* work much faster than before.

There's a button for adding skins but there aren't any skins to be found.

And the reason I'm saying all of this here, is that none of my emails to the developers have been answered (at least not to my knowledge).

Looking forward to v2. Normally I wouldn't expect major number upgrades to be free, but in this case I'm not so sure.

PHP Function Index

FILIPP  Priceless. In-page searching was the only thing I was longing for and now it has that too.

I wish someone would make something like this for Python.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  "I wish someone would make something like this for Python."

Maybe it already exists. If so, I sure can't find it. If you can/do find it, please post again here as to where it may be found. Thanks.

PHP Function Index
Mar 19 2007

FILIPP  Yeah, same here - looked around but found nothing. Actually thought of making something like this myself, but the Python docs are not as easily indexed as PHP-s. Also it's all more complex with packages and modules. Will keep looking though.

Here's the next-best thing:

Damage Isolation

FILIPP  Just out of curiousity, how is this any different from running

hdiutil convert -format UDTO -o myisofile, dragging the DMG onto Terminal hitting return and then changing the CDR extension to ISO?

AKROBAT  Actually it's no different. However most of us are not proficient (or even familiar) with the Terminal which makes this drag and drop app just perfect.

Backdrop

FILIPP  Is this practically the same as creating an empty folder, opening it in the Finder and using it as a backdrop for you screenshots?

I use this technique to get the drop shadows.

FILIPP  For simple equation formatting, just write the equation into /Applications/Grapher, select it, and copy paste into your text document. Furthermore, you can even use it to get the LaTex equation.

FILIPP  Brilliant program. Many thanks!

Too bad the iTMS videos will not play back with it. After wrapping the mp4 file in a MOV, you'll only get a "Computer not authorized..." message when trying to play with NicePlayer.

FILIPP  I'll just jump right to the conclusions:

Pros:

-Very stable. More stable than most other non-alpha IRC clients out there. I think the only crashes I've ever had were due to some mis-behaving PERL scripts and I've used this for quite some time.

-Cross-platform UI

-Highly customizable.

-Extensible. Can use virtually any script from xchat.org in a variety of languages. And even has an AppleScript dictionary.

-Growl support. Also very customizable.

Cons:

-Cross-platform UI. I think the developers have done a good job at striking a balance here, but it's just that we Mac users are used to so much more.

-No source in sight. Even though it's an Open Source project I haven't managed to get access to the source.

-Growl support needs work with non-ASCII and non-Unicode charsets

FENRISULF   cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@xchataqua.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/xchataqua login

then cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@xchataqua.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/xchataqua checkout xchat

you should have the source coming to a directory in no time.

(just hit return when it asks for a password.)

FILIPP  Good, but still plenty of room for improvement on the Mac port.

1.1.3 is out also: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/administrator/1.1.html

For performing queries you'll need the Query Browser:
