FILCHESCAT  This is truly a rip-off which I unfortunately bought into last year. When version 10 came out a year ago, it would constantly give an error message when launched. SmithMicro never responded to repeated requests for help, nor with information on getting a refund. This new version not only continues with the same error message, it now installs something in the system library that presumably tracks days since last used and wants an admin level password. The un-install doesn't even work - had to track down the little devil in the library and manually trash it before it stopped asking for permission to use keychain. No thanks.

FILCHESCAT  Same here - error message about having modified the Acrobat Pro 9.1.x file and messing around with plug-ins. NOT. Sounds like a bad update app. I downloaded a similar update directly from Adobe's site - same results. Did a lot of un-installing / re-installing with the same results. Come on Adobe.

FILCHESCAT  Upon launch it states that an installation of version 7 is required. Then it quits. Version 7 is there. I agree - testing prior to deployment and support for this app on a Mac is sadly lacking. Apparently lost in translation. Can't rate it if it doesn't launch. OS 10.5.8 / Intel MacPro. I always have to revert to version 6.x, which is barely usable.

FILCHESCAT  How can one of the premiere camera manufacturers, successful even transitioning from film to digital, consistently produce the worst native support software? And have the audacity to charge for it on top of the $K's spent for their cameras. For years I've waited for Nikon to hire competent software engineers to provide some kind of support. Nada. This current production looks like early beta - misnamed menus that give no hint to their function and an inability touit without crashing. At least it now it launches.

You must be thinking of NX2 or the remote camera app.

FILCHESCAT  It looks like this is still 8.0608.1, which has been available to the public since 4-8-09. As mentioned by others, user interface is different (change is good?) than the old reliable version 6 iterations, but the product itself is still beta quality. I've had problems with it silently quitting, not recognizing configured backup locations, especially on network storage devices. EMC tech support is fairly responsive, but looks to be overwhelmed by similar complaints. They like comments sent to their forum where they are kicked around by other uses, as if a group session will help solve problems - like a beta test group. Keep trying, EMC, is all I can say.

FILCHESCAT  I'm starting to get a little suspicious about this product - seems the publisher spends more time re-branding than developing. Every couple of months there's a version change, an upgrade cost and module spin-offs, but no improvement in actual performance, which is marginal to say the least. Then there's the iskysoft.com / aimersoft.com conneciton - same company, same product re-branded, and same rebranding scheme - all out of China. Check the domain owner via whois. No more of my hard earned dinero for HK developer rip-offs. Ah, capitalism.

FILCHESCAT  This version 10.0.0.3 R4 has been out for several weeks. Crashes on me about 1 in 4 times of use. Fortunately no data loss - just a pain to restart the app and that uneasy feeling of possible data loss or corruption. Intuit's crash reporting system always gathers crash and system info and allows for input, but rarely if ever do I get any feedback after the report. For a while the feedback was that they re-did the sound (??), but even these reports have ceased. This 2009 version is truly beta and should be majorly cleaned up before release as a commercial product. Too bad I'm stuck with it or I'd seriously look at another business accounting system.

FILCHESCAT  So . . . waited & waited for notice that a download link and s/n were available. 36 hours after charging my card, I received an email that the link was available. Click it and voila! it's an old 9.01 version with a 10.x s/n. Called digitalriver (because Roxio uses them as a shield for their incompetence and/or inattention and/or lack of concern for end-users). The poor lady at digitialriver said "This is a known issue and I will forward your concern to our technology group. They will email you the correct link." Out of exasperation and with a slight (slight!) feeling of guilt, because I knew it was not her fault, I asked how many more days might I have to wait. She said, "They're telling us one to two days." Really, really poor form Roxio. Even if everyone left the building for the day to drive 40 miles to MW Expo, really poor form.

FILCHESCAT  The $99.99 upgrade link lead to the $129.99 standard upgrade purchase. Purchase made. No download link sent. No s/n sent. Only got a receipt for the dinero spent. Roxio's distributor, digitalriver, said so sorry, Roxio has not provided them with the ability to forward emails to buyers with a download link and s/n. Even 12 hours after they took my money. They confirmed, as I did with my bank, the payment has already been made. No response from Roxio to email about the bogus $99.99 upgrade. I agree - it's a good product, as release when it was version 8.x. The 9.x upgrade was cosmetic only and I suspect I was suckered again with the 10.x release. Very poor form, Roxio.

Nikon Capture NX
Sep 14 2008

FILCHESCAT  I'd like to be able to use Nikon's Mac software, but it chronically crashes or otherwise weanies out. I've been duped into buying activation numbers for it over the years when purchasing Nikon camera equipment (no gripes there!), but it's never quite lived up to expectations. Even this new release of Capture sucks (immediately asks for a serial number or offers an option to purchase one, with no option to try it out). Quite expensive for something a more versatile, mainstream app like Adobe's Lightroom, Apple's Aperture or for that matter, Photoshop can take care of. Still hoping.

FILCHESCAT  true to their word, Logitech fixed their 7.5.0 release of Harmony software, apparently w/o changing the version number of the app; the single button press = multiple transmission of commands problem has been fixed in a release that appeared sometime on Monday 8/11/08. They admit their goof - good for them. There was no overt announcement, though, to log in and update - just a notice on the app if you took the initiative. I updated the firmware again as well, but there is no indication that this was necessary

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Good to hear. But 'silent' updates area such a bad idea in general. How can most/all users know that a new version is available if the new version is still numbered as being the old version...

FILCHESCAT  Logitech confirmed via call to customer support that 7.5 is flawed - used on a Harmony 1000 with DirecTV it sends two pulses for each button push. I was informed Sat 8/9/08 that 'engineers' were working on it and reverting to a previous version would not help - probably because of the firmware update that accompanies the application
