FAHLMAN I was importing a couple hundred photographs in to iPhoto from my Canon SD750 when iPhoto locked up while Deleting the Originals (I'll never do that again!). I instanlty came to MacUpdate to find a utility to recover my photographs from my 4GB SDHC card. I downloaded a couple. CameraSalvage is twice the price and not as easy to use. Exif Untrasher is free but is not easy to use and it locked up during the recovery. CardRaider is easy to use, effective and affordable. (Version 2.0.1)

FAHLMAN I have a mortgage, car payment, car insurance, health insurance, life insurance, home insurance, etc and I'll second the first post. Prioritize your finances. Get rid of cable television, broadband internet, dinner out every other night, lunch at the nearest fast food joint every weekday, live in a reasonable house (which also has the side of lowering not only your mortgage but also the home insurance premium), drive a reasonable car (again not only does this reduce your loan payment, but reduces your car insurance also). People live way outside their means and then complain that they're poor. It's only their own fault. (Version 2.1.3)

JIM_T_3 I think this reply is kinda missing the point. You're already saying that you have a mortgage and a car payment. That's two debts right there. Are you paying them down in the most efficient fashion possible? Namely, are you putting every spare cent you have towards paying them off? Which one are you paying off first? What about when one's paid off? Then what are you doing with the money that was going to it? Do you have any other debts? How do those factor in? What's the most efficient way to pay 'em off? Do any of the interest rates vary? When? By how much? How does that factor into a payment schedule? The program's designed to help you find every spare cent you have. "Spare cent" meaning "unallocated". So if you don't want to pay for cable television, broadband internet, dinner out every other night, and so on, then don't do it. But where's that money going instead? I mean, you may have a budget where you earn $X per month and spend exactly the same $X per month, and that's cool. But most people don't track to that extreme a level. They get mostly close enough. If you're already tracking where every single penny you have goes, then bully for you, and you've forecasted out tracking every single penny until all of your debts are paid off, so you know where everything's going and when everything'll be paid off, then bully for you. You're right, you don't need it. But I'm willing to bet that most people are more like me. Me? Sure, I have debt. Mortgage, 2 car payments, a credit card with a small balance from an emergency a while back. All very small, very low interest rates. So all these posts here telling me that I should get lower rates or only pay for the essentials, well, I'm already doing it. I'm still saving a fortune by tracking how I'm paying everything. Telling people to not acquire debt or to only acquire small amounts with small interest rates is _not_ the entire solution. It's part of it (a big part!) but the rest of it is better planning with what you have. The program helps with the better planning. (Version 2.1.3)

FAHLMAN From the developers website: "When you drag a file to the Trash, TrashCache will intercept the file and leave an alias in the Trash. When you empty the Trash, the alias is deleted, but the original file remains intact." If I'm reading that right I can't actually empty the trash. If I think I'm emptying the trash, I'm really not. I'm just deleting an alias of the file I want to delete, but sometime in the future TrashCache will actually delete the file? Interesting, I guess. (Version 1.4)

AppZapper | Feb 12 2007 |
FAHLMAN I can guarantee you that you don't want your standard user account to have the ability to delete files from the locations where AppZapper is deleting these files. If you were smart you would use Fast User Switching to log in to your Admin account and delete the application you needed deleted and then use FUS to switch back to your standard account. You want the security of a standard account but the power of a admin account? You can't have it both ways. (Version 1.8)

FAHLMAN This is a fun application. Most of the built in effects are cool. A couple of suggestions. One, implement this as a Preference Pane instead of a stand alone application. I would prefer this for a couple of reasons reasons. The first reason is because it's icon wouldn't need to be in the dock. Second, it would continue to work all the time because it couldn't be hidden. Third, it could also be set to start at login with out adding it to the startup applications. Two, move the Effects folder out of the /Applications folder and in to /Library/Application Support/ Three, allow for exporting and importing of effects. Maybe the developer could host user-submitted effect at his website. (Version 1.30)

Xtorrent | Feb 9 2007 |
FAHLMAN I didn't claim it made sense. In fact I would not pay for any bittorrent application because I download a torrent file about once every three months. That being said there is still nothing unethical about what he's done. The developer of Transmission specifically made a choice to use the MIT License knowing full well that it allowed for resale of his original source. If it's his source and he doesn't care, why should we? (Version 1.0b3v28)

Xtorrent | Feb 8 2007 |
FAHLMAN I wasn't aware that Transmit handled torrent files. Maybe you wanted to say it was based upon Transmission? Now that we have that straightened out let me straighten out another mistake in your post. Transmission while being OSS (Open Source Software) is released under the MIT License. The MIT License allows for reuse of the original source code in proprietary software that can be sold and/or released without it's own source code being open. Next time before you spout off get your information straight. Thank you. (Version 1.0b3v28)

FAHLMAN It's great to have another Universal Binary version of the classic "falling blocks game". The other UB version of the "falling block game" that can be found here on MacUpdate, Quinn, is currently in beta and has a couple bugs, but has a few more features also. One of the features is a shadow piece that shows where the block would end up if you dropped it. Most times I just watch the shadow. It also automatically pauses the game if it is no longer the active application. Another is the way it'll snap the blocks to the side instead of clicking it over step by step if the key is held for more than a fraction of a second. It has an undo feature too. It also has network play, including Bonjour support. A couple of the fun features it has is custom blocks and backgrounds. All that being said it appears that the development of the UB version of Quinn has stalled. An updated version hasn't been released since 8/31/06. I mention it's features because I hope that the developer of Sosume considers adding some of them. (Version 1.0.1)

FAHLMAN While you can do this for free as you suggest, for less than $10, XSlimmer saves a back-up of the slimmed application so that you can verify taht it runs properly after slimming and is easy to restore if it doesn't. It also contains a blacklist of applications that don't operate properly, for one reason or another, after slimming that it will not slim. Not to mention it'll slim a whole folder of application a lot faster than manually clicking on each application one at a time. I think the guys are offering a discount of $3 if you buy before 12/10/06. (Version 1.1.3)

FAHLMAN The GUI looks great, but has anyone noticed that the FAQ for iCyclone is almost a word for word copy of the FAQ from smcFanControl? Compare the paragraphs about how they each handle the authentication with their own dialog box. It seems a little fishy. The source for smcFanControl is open source. Maybe iCyclone is based on the same source code? Has anyone tried this? I'd love to give it a try but am not interested in being the first. (Version 0.7.2)

FAHLMAN While Monolingual has the capabilities to do the same thing the GUI is not as nice, it does not show the progress of each individual file, or does it show how much was saved from each file, just the total saved. This looks like a nice product. Will people pay $10, I don't know, but the developer is welcome to charge whatever price he feels is fair for his time. If people pay, good for him. (Version 1.0b)

Licensed | Apr 28 2006 |
FAHLMAN If you are looking for a simple to use utility to manage the serial numbers of your applications then Licensed is it. The best attribute of Licensed is that it is designed to just store serial numbers, which makes the appearance clean and operation easy. Because it is a beta it is lacking features, understandably. It would be nice if it had a preference pane where default settings could be entered such as the owner's name and email address. These settings would automagically appear in the proper field when creating a new license. The fact that it has a list of built in Software Companies that it will auto-populate in to the "Maker" field is nice. It'll even remembers Makers that you type in that weren't originally in its built-in database. Another feature request would be the ability to "upgrade" applications and the upgraded application to appear nested in the newer applications entry. For example, if I own Photoshop 7 and I upgraded Photoshop 8 I would like to be able to upgrade the Photoshop 7 to Photoshop 8 therefore "attaching" the two together. This would also simplify the interface because it would only show the most recent applications. The built in search is great too. It's a very easy way to find just the application you're looking for. While I'm requesting features the option to show/hide columns would be nice. The Duplicate License is great for people who own multiple versions of the same applications with different serial numbers, though I'd like a Duplicate button in the toolbar. The ability to copy the serial number to the clipboard so it can be pasted in to an installer's dialog box is easy on the fingers. (Version 1.0b1)
