EP1CURUS OS X 10.5.8, Java Version 1.5.0_20, LightZone 3.8.2 This program crashed from initial launch. I have never installed this app before. Crash Reporter says "The application LightZone has unexpectedly quit". No other error message is given. Program has not successfully launched once. Reboots do not help either. Was thinking of getting this program with Toast Titanium Pro. This package retails for 150.00. Would you want to commit this much change on a program that will not even launch. I meet the system requirements. http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/system-requirements.html If you are thinking of purchasing this, I would test the other programs as well. I did not. This is a deal killer. It would be very aggravating after dropping big coin and get this. It's their latest release too. (Version 3.8.2)

BoinxTV | Apr 6 2009 |
EP1CURUS Follow-Up: I am very appreciative and it was very generous of Boinx Software to be part of the MacHeist bundle. Getting this at a huge discount, it can almost be considered free. I am more than willing to give Boinx air time. I would have a problem if I had paid 199.00 for it. It would be like paying 5000.00 for a Nikon or Canon DSLR and then having "Made by Nikon/Canon" imprinted on every picture or buying cake mix, baking the cake and then having to put "Made by Duncan Hines" on it. You are creating something so the product becomes yours. You bought a tool to do the job, like buying Craftsman tools to construct a table or deck. Did you build it or did Sears. At the beginning of movies you see for eg., ... Pictures, A ... Company, In Association with ... Entertainment. They are partners who invested time and money to produce the film and then share in the profits. For 199.00, Boinx does not invest any time or money in your project but share in the profits in the form of free advertising. If you put the video out for free, the advertising is still there. If there is a bandwidth cost, who is paying or sharing in the expense. Five seconds of air time can become a huge cost if the video became viral. Not everything is hosted on YouTube and the like. MACMAXPR The requested BoinxTV slogan/logo is for an outro not the intro of your videos. It will go on the very end. Just like iWeb websites or iDVD videos might have a Made on Mac or Apple logo on a corner. Apple does give you the option to take it out, but it is activated by default. I actually love the application. I am currently using it for church services. I can stream live and record.. and present on church screens at the same time. A full production. We did have to spend quite a bit on hardware to accommodate the requirements. But I needed 4 video sources as a minimum so we AHD to get a brand new Mac Pro with the ATI card option. Up to now it is working very well. Just wish it had more layers for a christian service type of situation. For example, lyrics with a database in a few languages, and bible verses in different translations. All of them available at the touch of a few keys and not having to depend on the web. Also, a few "Layers" need more options. The one with the cross for example. I can even put an image in the actual cross, but I can't put my own image as a background to the whole scene. Still, the only thing better than this (at a price) is the TriCaster. We will be upgrading to the full version though... just because we love it! (Version 1.4b3)

EP1CURUS I got this in the MacHeist 3 2009 Bundle. It's got some pretty stiff requirements. OS X 10.5.5, QuickTime 7.5.5 and a Mac without one of those integrated graphics processor. Well.. the software is the easy part. No Boinx for you. It will probably run but no support is provided if the app locks up, crashes or a feature does not work or work properly. For 199.00 it is a "Sponsored Edition". What does it mean, you "have" to promote the company in any of your broadcasts. For 300.00 more (standard edition), then you are "free" from promoting the company. That's the only difference. No change in software functionality. These people are smoking some bad crack. You can advertise all you want on the product I buy but if it is something I produced, there is no way, no how that I am pushing your company. I don't mind too much since it was in a hugely discounted bundle but if I had paid full price... From their site it does not appear the app will "watermark" your broadcast. You do it on your own accord and if you don't, bad karma may float your way. I certainly will not feel guilty after paying 199.00. At least the whole video is not watermarked, a 5 second upfront intro is requested. This leaves the future in doubt. They could add some enhancements or push out a bug fix and sneak in a mandatory advertisement. Since you purchased the sponsored edition, they would tell you that you knew this going in and wash their hands clean of it. No where in the agreement says they can't or won't. A sign of the times. We have advertising on just about everything we buy from cars, computers, TVs, etc. I guess it's just a matter of time before software watermarks anything we create. Something like this however takes away from the result. Would you like to see photographs you have taken of your children or vacation trip plastered with "Made by [camera manufacturer]" on it? If I buy it, advertising comes with the territory. If I create it from a product I bought, absolutely not. (Version 1.2.1)

HMURCHISON That's a tall soapbox your standing on. BoinxTV isn't doing anything that a thousand companies don't do. Want to license HDMI for your product it's $.14 cent per port. Include the HDMI logo on the front of your device the per port cost drops to $.04. Why? Because it's an easy way to generate awareness. In essence you are co-marketing with the licensor. Why not be proud of the quality of your presentations due to the fact that BoinxTV works? They're saving you $300 to do this co-marketing and that's significant IMO. I hate advertising as much as the next person but if I proudly use a tool I don't mind people knowing what I'm using especially if I'm getting said product for less than half the cost. Protect Files | Jan 11 2009 |
EP1CURUS This is definitely for the newbie. All this thing does is create an encrypted sparse bundle disk image for you and compacts it when you close it. You can do all this with Disk Utility and Terminal for free. To create a sparse bundle disk image - format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - choose your encryption level, 256 bit encryption is stronger but will take longer to format. - Single Partition - Apple Partition Map - Image Format "sparse bundle disk image" - click create and you will be prompted for a password Simply mount it and use it as a separate hard drive. To compact your sparse bundle disk image 1) unmount the disk image. 3) hdiutil compact path/to/fileName.sparsebundle. 4) you will be prompted for your password. Unlike a normal disk image, where a 10GB image occupies 10GB of disk space from creation, Sparse Bundle disk images will start small and grow in size up to the limit you set but do not shrink themselves as you delete files from it which is why you have to compact them. This program simply compacts it for you when you close the disk image. Disk image size too small now... hdiutil resize -size 20g path/to/fileName.sparsebundle This will increase your image size to 20 GB. If you use FileVault, it makes your home folder a sparse bundle disk image and the OS will compact it for you as you remove files from it automatically. Protect Files is using the same concept. You could use this and save yourself the 15.00 but then you lose the ability to use TimeMachine's fancy space time continuum and will have to navigate your TimeMachine folder like a regular folder. PocketMac RingtoneStudio | Dec 28 2008 |
EP1CURUS Sunday, December 28 2008 PocketMac RingtoneStudio 1.0 I got this app from the MacHeist 2009 Christmas Giveaway and it's a little buggy, featureless and crippled. 1) You cannot upgrade this version to 1.1. You have to purchase the 1.1 version just to get the bug fixes. Downloading the 1.1 demo does not give you 1.1 features or fixes. 2) You cannot set the preferences, it is greyed out. I guess because this was given out for free. 3) You cannot make fine adjustments. You need to use the mouse to move the slider. This causes the seconds to jump from 1.5 to 3 seconds or anything in-between. If you are trying to get the ringtone to start at a particular point, good luck with that. Let me know when the frustrations and annoyances set in. 4. The length of the ringtone can only be a maximum of 29 seconds but the iphone will accept a maximum length of 40 seconds. 5) It messes up the display once in a while where 1/3 of my display would be washed out with colour streaks. Too bad I can't upload a pic to show you. Only way to fix this is through a reboot. 6) There is no option to check for or download updates. Is this how the company does business where every time a point update comes out you have to pay them again? 7) Use GarageBand. It's free. Let's you make a ringtone up to 40 seconds. It can be updated with bug fixes. It's more customizable. You can make fine adjustments, at least to the half-second mark and so far has not painted my screen with colour streaks. I've used PocketMac for Blackberry and that was buggy as well. Always crashed at the beginning of the sync but it would not bring down the app, gave you a chance to ignore it and continue. This app is no different by washing out the screen and forcing a reboot to fix. Having to pay for a point update is a no-no in my books or is it because they gave it away for free? Still, if this was a way to get me try the product and then pay for 1.1 then the developers missed the mark. To make a ringtone in GarageBand is no more difficult than using RingtoneStudio and you get the added bonus of bug fixes, finer adjustments and setting preferences. In fact I was able to make a ringtone faster in GarageBand because I wasted a lot of time in RingtoneSudio trying to figure out how to do fine adjustments, finding out it can’t be done and getting more frustrated at the lack of controls. It’s a simplistic app with simplistic controls but there are too many negatives to make this a buy or even to use it for free. (Version 1.1)

POCKETMACTEAM Thanks for your comments. I'd like to give you an update on a few items, and correct a couple of misconceptions, if I may. First, our dot releases are free to our users, and always have been. That is also true for bug fixes. I'm sorry that you were confused by that in the past. Our current versions are always available on our download page, here: http://www.pocketmac.com/download.php. You mentioned having difficulty with some fine-tuning of the selection. In addition to mouse controls, you can use the keyboard to control the edit points in this release to get a more refined selection. Along with some new features, we're including finer keyboard controls in the next release. The preferences are not available because in the first version, this product was intended to be VERY easy to use, so we kept it very simple. Many users aren't as comfortable as you in using Garage Band, so this simple tool saves many people a lot of time. Also coming in our next release is support for the longer ringtones. I am not sure about your experiences with PocketMac for BlackBerry. I can't tell by your note if you tried the assistance of the support team, which is free here: www.pocketmacsupport.net. Many times the team can help you with any inconsistencies in your data that could have caused errors on your system. I haven't heard any other reports of screen problems with RingtoneStudio, but we'll keep our eyes open and try to reproduce that. Thanks for your feedback. (Version 1.1)

PocketMac RingtoneStudio | Feb 7 2009 |
EP1CURUS PocketMac RingtoneStudio for Mac 1.1.5 Saturday, February 07 2009 11:13 am I gave this app another try after comments from the dev. To get the 1.1 version you need to download from the support page. You can download from the main page (the one where they want you to buy) is what I originally did but it is only a demo version. No where does it say from the purchase page that existing customers must download from the support page. This is confusing and the first for me to run into something like this. When I upgrade my apps, I simply download from the main page and you're up and running with the newest version. Here, you have to dig for it. The app won't link you to the correct page either so you are on your own. They need to be more clear. My mistake, you can do fine adjustments with the cursor keys. Getting to a specific part of a song is not so easy when you are using a big media file such as a movie because the timeline is compressed so much that moving the timeline indicator makes the frames jump several seconds or minutes depending on your twitchy your wrist is. If you pass the mark, going backwards is slow because the timeline only moves in real time, ie., if you go past by 5 seconds, rewinding using the cursor keys takes 5 seconds. You need to move slow but too slow and the mouse won't register any movements. You can't hear the music when adjusting, simply guess on where the spot is and then press play. If you miss the mark again, repeat your steps again until you get really annoyed. Click and hold to move the timeline does not always work and yes I put the cursor on top of the triangle and around it just to make sure I was not doing it wrong. The timeline jumps to the beginning once in a while and if you did not have the presence of mind to remember where you were, you end up searching for the spot again. There is no rhyme or reason on why this happens. The biggest frustration when moving the timeline is that the time is set to zero when using the mouse. If you are at the 23:12:43 mark and want to move to the 26:17:03 mark. Take a guess and hope for the best. Small single tracks may be fine (I did not test this) but on long tracks, 1.5 - 2 hours in length and you can overshoot the mark by several minutes. A major flaw, the only way to see where you are is to use the cursor keys but then you are thrown into the other flaw of the app, everything moves in real time, you cannot quickly move around. You need to have presence of mind to uncheck the the 'Play Selection' box if you decide to use another track. Sliding the time marker and then pressing play will move the timeline marker to the in-out markers. Time to start over again, sigh... The colour streaks did not appear again during my second round of testing. I still find this app cumbersome to use and quirks bothersome. Definitely needs a lot of polishing. (Version 1.1)
