Well... I also have to say that say I agree with Castle's post.

Vienna and NetNewsWire are now both free (Vienna has always been free) and they're both very good.

I did buy a licence for NetNewsWire 3.0 when it was shareware, beacuse Vienna's interface at the time was not attractive. But a few days after I bought that licence, Vienna's look changed for the better and is now very nice indeed.

And there are not great diffrerences between them in functionality. Maybe the winner is NetNewsWire, but by a very short margin.

Excellent application!

Beautiful interface and animations effects. And it's so easy to use...

But I have one complaint: when I installed version 2.0. I lost all the tasks that I had in version 1.3.

29 dollars?

iWork '08 (including Pages, Numbers & Keynote) costs 80 dollars. So, this is more expensive than Keynote itself. (More than one third of iWork).

No, thanks!

I've just ried version 3.0.0 of AllBookmarks. It's works as expected, but I would like to sort bookmarks by the same order I have them in the browsers (and not only alphabeticaly).

AllBookmarks is able to pick bookmarks from a few browsers but, when you select one bookmark, it always opens in your default browser. I would like to open Safari bookmarks in Safari, Camino bookmarks in Camino, Firefox bookmarks in Firefox, and so on.

Othewise, this a nice application.

I've been using IC-Switch for almost two years, which performs just the same functions. IC-Switch is a PowerPC app and it is slow in my Intel-based iMac, running Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.2). But, after the long time it takes to launch or to access the preferences, it works very well.

Defaulter is faster and works well too. But IC-Switch allows me to select the applications I want to use in each category. Defalter has no preferences panel and so you may not chose the browsers or the e-mail clients you want to use. I'll give you an example: RealPlayer has a built.in browser, but I don't want to use it as an ordinary browser (like Safari, Camino or Firefox). So, I would like to be able to remove it from the list. With IC-Switch I can remove it; Defaulter does not allow me to do it.

There is also Switch:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/26962/switch

It's free.

It's a PowerPC app, but it works very well in my Intel-based iMac, running Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.2). It takes some time time to launch, but then it converts almost all audio formays to WAV or MP3. (To convert to other formats, the Plus version costs 20 dollars.)

Or then try ToolPlayer:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24852/toolplayer

It's a great audio player, with a nice interface and is also able to convert several audio formats (including MP3).

For some reason, the developer posted a Windows screenshot in a Mac (only) software website.

Although Safari is currently a "heavy" application, you won't notice it when you use it. It launches quickly and is the fastest of all browsers I have ever tried. Only Camino comes close in speed.

I also use BonEcho, a version of Firefox with Aqua HTML elements and different builds for Intel and G5 Macs. BonEcho is "lighter" than Safari, but Safari beats it hands down on speed and stability. (I just miss a few Firefox extensions.)

The developer says that with version 2.0.1 is possible to add folders. Well... Yes and no. It is possible to select folders, but version 2.0.1 creates a different entry for each application inside that folder.

As I wrote in my previous post about version 2.0, I would like to add iWork '08 as one single entry, because the licence key is the same for Keynote, Numbers and Pages. But when I select the iWork folder, this new version creates three different entries, one for each app. And the same applies to Microsoft Office 2008, for example.

Why can't I add a folder AS A SINGLE ENTRY, just like I did with version 1.5.1? (I suppose it's not so difficult to add this feature.) And with version 1.5.1 it was possible to do it by drag & drop. Version 2.x does not allow drag & drop.

That's one of the reasons why I prefer MacUpdate over all other Mac websites. It's good to see that the site's administrators take care of what is happening in these pages. Others leave their websites (almost) completely in the hands of the users. And, unfortunately, allow all kind of posts and all kind of language. (I suppose you know what I mean.)

With the previous version (1.5.1) it was possible to add folders by drag & drop. Version 2.0 does not allow it. (And the application crashed when I tried to do it.) I want to add iWork '08 as one single item, because the licence key is the same for Pages, Numbers & Keynote. So, there's no need for three different entries. But this new version of RapidoSerial does not allow it. Selecting individual apps, you cannot add folders. By drag & drop, it does not work.

Please bring back the functionality of the older version!

Don't forget to try Vienna too.

It's as good as NetNewsWire and its new interface, with a customizable toolbar and Leopard polished metal icons, is very nice indeed.

Don't waste your time with NewsFire.

Vienna and NetNewsWire are both fres and they're so much better than this: beter interface (with a decent toolbar), they're both much easier to customize and use and both have built-in browsers.

With Vienna and NetNewsWire you're not obliged to have the the developer's blog RSS feed if you don't want it. You're free to chose the feeds you want and those you do not want.

And I don't remember one single feed that Vienna and NetNewsWire could not handle. No "does not validate" excuses here. They simple work as they're supposed to.

And you know what? When NetNewsWire went free, NewsGator refunded the users who has acquired a lecence in the latest months. Do you expect the developer of NewsFire to do the same?

Now that NewsFire has gone free, I decided to give it a try. But I gave up after a few minutes... When I tried to customize the RSS feeds, I noticed that it is impossible to delete David Watanabe's blog RSS feed.

It's me who decides what feeds I want in my RSS reader. Not the developer!

So, to the trash NewsFire went!

There must be some problem today with the download of version 1.7 of Papers. I have tried for five times and the download is never completed. It stops for some unknown reason and does not reach the end. That's probably the reason why the DMG does not mount: it is not complete. (Trouble with the server?) Sometimes the download ends at 4 MB. Sometimes near 19 MB. But I never got the total 20.2 MB, which is the size of the DMG file.

I also would like to give WavePad five stars. (Honestly.) Unfortunately, I could not give it more than two stars based on my experience with it. (And not just to counter any previous comment..) And my initial rate was just one star. I gave it an extra star because it is freeware.

I tried it on another Intel Mac (a Macbook Pro) and it also took too long to launch. And the interface is just too ugly. Not to mention a few crashes I had when trying to save some files.

Believe me: I would like to like it, but t's not good enough. (Even if it's free.)

Make it Universal Binary, correct the bugs and give the interface a lift. Maybe then I'll change my mind about it.

Two years after Apple switched to Intel processors, it's amazing that some developers are still releasing PowerPC (only) applications. This is is one example. WavePad takes sooooooo looooooong to launch in my Intel-based iMac... And the inteface looks nothing like a Mac app. I know this is freeware, but... it's really very poor.

You may change the text color simply by selecting "Show Colors" from the "Font" menu, just like you do in any word processor. You may chose for example white as the text color for the first note and then Pluto will remember that the next time you'll write another note. You may also change the font from that same "Font" menu by selecting "Show Fonts"

The only problem I have with this application is the one I mentioned in my post: if you resize the window, Pluto sometimes remembers its size and position on screen after relaunch, but other times it doesn't and reverts to the original (tiny) sized window placed in the center of the screen.

This is the only issue that's still preventing me from using it daily. I tried it for a few days but this strange behaviour mede return to Noted as my notepad of choice.

I use an Intel-base iMac (Dual Core, 2 GHz), running Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.1).

I have installed version 1.9.5 of Pando a few days ago and I'm having some problems that I don't remember with the previous versions:

1. It takes "ages" to connect, although I have a very fast cable Internet line.

2. The progression bar and the info with the percentage of the package already sent do not work. I never know if the upload has already begun and when it will end.

3. The same happens when downloading packages: no progression bar and no percentage of package already downloaded.

4. I had quite a few crashes with this version 1.9.5. (I suppose the application reports them to Pando HQ.)

5. The upload and download speeds are much slower than they used to be.

I understand that Pando wants to sell their Pro version. However, I use Pando maybe once every two months (or so). So, I don't need Pando Pro. But all these problems with the free version are a not a good promotion for the Pro version. And the same happens with the fact that they do not provide e-mail support anymore for users of the free version.

If only they could fix all these problems with the free version...

I've tried Flash Video Downloader 2 with YouTube, Veoh and Dailymotion URLs.

It works very well with YouTube and Veoh. It did not miss one single FLV file.

With Dailymotion it was able to download one single FLV file in six or seven tries. The other times it has downloaded pictures, banners or... nothing at all. There must be some kind of problem when trying to locate the FLV file in Dailymotion.

With the other website I tried, no problem.

Nevertheless, it's better than the first version of Flash Video Downloader. Fix the problems with Dialymotion and it'll be a great app.

(Yes... I know I can download FLV file from Safari's activity window and from Firefox with the DownloadHelper extension.)

Simple interface and intuitive to use.

There are other similar applications, but most of them allow the download of FLV files from YouTube only. With FlashFetch you can do it from almost every website.

There's just only thing that could be removed from this app... Why do I need to type my password everytime I want to use FlashFetch? It's annoying and it makes no sense.

I launched OnyX and just took a look at the features. I did not run any routine. (And I did not click any button by mistake.) Then I quit OnyX.

When I activated the Dashboard, all widgets were starting again, just like they do the first time you launch the Dashboard after a boot. (I don't remeber this beahviour when I had Tiger installed.)

I have already emailed the developer about this and I'm waiting for a reply.

Just one more note: The installation of this new version for Leopard is now done by drag & drop. No more installer to run.

Well... I have tried Tagebuch and I find it very simple and very intuitive. There's a list of entries to the left and the text field to the right. And just three buttons: new entry, delete entry and apply tags. IMHO, it could not be simpler.

There are, however, a few glitches that could be corrected:

1. When you update the application by drag & drop of the icon from the disk image to the applications folder, you have to save all entries first. The disk image includes a PDF file explaining how this is done. But this should happen normaly, without these steps.

2. If you click by mistake on the "Delete" button, the entry disappears imadiateçy. There should be a dialog box asking if you really want to delete this entry.

3. And finaly, I think the developer could also include some kind of encryption.

Nevertheless, I really like Tagebuch. It has nice interface and when these glitches will be solved, I plan to replace DreamDiary with Tagebuch. (But that's just my opinion...)

@ Bruce_Y:

Disk Inventory X gives a "checkerborad quilt" style (as you call it) graphic information about the content of the folder you select, but also gives you a list with the size of each item in that folder. And it also organizes that information from the biggest to the smallest item in that folder. And it is possible to get info about each individual item and even sent it to the trash if you want to.

But I agree... This new version of WhatSize is better than Disk Inventory X.

The only real advantage of Disk Inventory X is... the price.

About Firefox... I agree with you about this Firefox 3 beta version. I tried it for ten, maybe fifteen minutes and tehn I gave up. I trashed it and reinstalled the Intel-optimized build of BonEcho 2.0.0.8. It also includes Aqua HTML elements (just like Firefox 3) and it's lighter (and faster!) than the official Universal Binary version of Firefox. And all Firefox add-ons (extensions and themes) work with it. There's also a G5-optimized 2.0.0.7 version.

@ Mr.Ash:

It's very easy to play the FLV files downloaded with RealPlayer.

RealPlayer installs a RealPlayer Downloads folder inside the Movies folder that you'll find in your admin folder.

When you download a video from YouTube (or other website) with the RealPlayer Downloader, you'll have to click on the "Save" button (at the top right of the window).

If you then look inside the RealPlayer Downloads folder, you'll find the FLV file there.

If you have RealPlayer as the default player for FLV files, click twice on it and the video will start playing.

Otherwise, click onde on the file, then right click on it, select "Open with" from the menu and chose RealPlyer (or other application) to play it.

This new version (11 Beta) has some nice features.

You can use the built-in browser to search for videos in YouTube, Dailymotion or any other site and then you may download them with a single click.

And RealPlayer now plays FLV files and even Windows Media files (WMV, WMA, etc.).

This is still a beta version. And it has crashed twice when I tried to play a video from the Finder browser. But if you select the file (click it once), right click and choose "Open with...", there will be no problem. Or then (of course...) you may select RealPlayer as the default player for certain kinds of files. I have deleted SWF & FLV Player and now I'm using RealPlayer as the default player for FLV files. (Yes... I know Perian also plays them well.)

I have intsalled Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) just yesterday and now SpotInside crashes on launch.

By the way... A few more applications do not work anymore (ToolPlayer, Word Counter, etc.) and others display error messages (Miro, Play MiTunes, etc.).

Taply (a "tiny" audio player) works well but everytime it quits, a crash log is issued.

And Gizmo Project is unable to establish a connection.

And I'm sure more applications have problems with the Leopard. I did not test them all yet.

There are also some Dashboard widgets that also do not work (Piano Theory, for example).

Well... Let's wait for the updates to make these applications and widgets compatible with Leopard.

You have a simple alternative to create ZIP files without destroying the resource fork:

Click once on the file you want to compress and then, from the Finder's File menu, choose "Create Archive". In a moment you'll have a ZIP file created in the same folder as the original file.

You'll need YemuZip (or other similar application) only if you want to share compressed files with your PC-user friends.

I think it would be nice two have both functions inside on single application, instead of having two applications (one for each function).

But you are the developer. (Not me.)

The detail of a single start/stop button is great.

But... Why not include a countdown timer too?

@ Doctor Infinity:

Could you please send me the DMG file of Picture Switcher 1.1.2?

Unfortunately I forgot to save it. I never thought that this would become shareware. (And with such a price!)

If you can send it to me, I'll post my e-mail address here.

Thanks.

You're absolutely right!

Thitry dollars is too much to change the desktop picture. As you wrote, it can be done for free.

I'll keep the previous version of Picture Switcher, which was completely free.

There's one thing that I prefer in Play MiniTunes (from the same developer): when iTunes is launched. it is immediately hidden. With Play MiTunes, you have to hide iTunes manualy.

And it would be good if you could activate Play MiTunes with a hotkey.

Otherwise, the new interface is nice and the application works well.

You don't need VisulaHub. To convert to MPEG-4 or its H.264 variant, iSquint (from the same developer of VisualHub) is enough.

You may choose from 5 different levels of quality for your videos and so reduce the size of the file if you need.

Just like FLV2iTunes, iSquint is also completely free.

There's a free alternative: Switch.

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20436/switch-file-format-converter

The free version converts several audio formats to MP3 or WAV. (To convert to other formats, you'll have pay.)

Nevertheless, for most users the free version is enough. And, although Switch is a PowerPC application, it works perfectly in my Intel-based iMac, running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.10).

How I understand you...

You know... The same happened to me. I bought a licence for NetNewsWire when Vienna still had that brushed metal interface and no toolbar.

A few days after I bought that licence, a new version of Vienna, with the current (excellent!) look, was released.

I also had a few crashes with the latest versions of NetNewsWire 3. (They always happened when the subsciptions were being loaded.)

So, I put NetNewsWire apart and now I'm using Vienna again.

Vienna is indeed a great RSS/Atom reader and it's getting better and better with evey new version. I just miss a progression bar in the downloads window. But it is promised for a future version.

Yes, dear developer, there are other features that I would like you to include in a next version of iCheckBook:

1. Different currencies. (In my country we have the Euro.)

2. Different date formats. (I prefer DD/MM/YYYY.)

3. If you change the position of the columns, the application does not remember it the next time it is lunched. It reverts to the "original" column order.

4. It also does not remember the size of the window if it is resized manualy.

5. And... Why are the debit values between parenthesis?

6. Last but not least: that brushed metal look is not "fashionable" anymore.

On the other side: iCheckBook works well and is very easy to use.

No, I don't always copy & paste my reviews.

Sometimes I wrote a post about the same application in MacUpdate and in I Use This. And there's no need to write the same thing twice. It's esier to copy from one website and post on the other.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

The two items that I compained about in a previous post have been solved in this new version (3.0) of JustLooking.

It has a nice and intuitive interface. I specially like the possiblity to browse pictures with just the left and right arrow keys.

It's very fast when opening large files and the full screen mode is great.

JustLooking has just replaced Xee as my main picture viewer.

Great job, dear developer!

This is something like a reply to your reply to my post.

I didn't say I don't like it. The interface is very nice and it is really fast.

But I'm not able to live without bookmarks and without the possibility to download a file when I need to.

And the fact that I have to manualy resize the window when Dreams is launched is really boring. It should remember the size and the position of the window between sessions.

But it's a good first try. Let's wait for the next versions...

"...simple browser..."

Very simple indeed: no bookmarks, no downloads and everytime it is launched, you'll have to resize the window manualy.

On the other side, the interface is very nice.

Dear developer: add a few more (missing) features and maybe you'll have a winner.

There are not many changes yet from the original Shiira 1.2.2. I only found a few cosmetic differences (the blue color in the side drawer and new toolbar icons, for example) and one or two operational changes.

But I'm curious to see how this project will evolve in the future. Specially because Shiira 2.x is, at the moment, a complete disapointment.

Still unusable!

There's still no way to define the home page as the opening page when the browser is launched.

And although the bookmark management is mentioned in the release notes, it does not work. When Shiira 2.2 is launched for the first time, the Shelf includes a mix of bookmarks from Safari, Firefox and the previous version of Shiira. I tried to delete a few and reorganize them, but it does not work. When I try to move a bookmark to a different place, it disapeares. And when the browser is relaunched, the same mix of Safari, Firefox and "old" Shiira bookmarks are there again. And the bookmarks displayed in the bookmark menu have nothing to do with those in the Shelf.

And when trying to organize bookmarks in the Shelf, Shiira 2.2 froze and I had to force quit.

These are just some problems that were not solved yet since version 2.0 was released.

This is not even a beta. This a complete disapointmant! (And to version 1.2.2 I went again...)

This is a great application!

It has a vey nice interface and everything is so easy to use. (Go the Miro's website and watch the screencast. It's very well done.)

I specially like the ability to search videos in YouTube, Dailymotin and other websites and play temh inside the application.

There, however, are two little things that could meke Miro even better:

1. When there are more than 20 videos in a search, it displays only the first 20. There's no way to access the other ones. (Or am I missing something?)

2. It would be nice if there was a field to insert the video URL (from those websites) and then play it.

Otherwise, it's excellent!

Nevertheless, it works very well in my Intel-based iMac, running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.10).

I had tried Tuboy Juego in its early ages and... it was a disapointment. But this new version is excellent!

There's just one thing that I would like to have in the search window: the time of each video. I suppose it won't be difficult to add this feature, 'cos all YouTube videos have this information.

When you say "your browser", I suppose you talk about Safari.

I have five browsers inatalled (Safari, Shiira, Camino, Firefox and Opera) and the only that has an Activity window is Safari.

But with some Firefox extensions it is also possible to download the FLV files.

And yes... iSquint is just a great tool to convert FLV (amd other video formats) to MPEG-4.
