EJI I've been checking the developer's site two, three times a day for news. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the absence of WideMail makes my entire upgrade to Snow Leopard seem half-finished. Letterbox just isn't the same. I know WM is donationware, but still, getting on for two months since the public release is a relatively long time to wait. I wish Apple would just include a vertical view by default. (Version 0.5.1)

EJI Nice idea! Would be great if: a) it supported DrayTek VoIP devices, and b) it weren't so damned expensive. I mean, $25 for it to liase with the device and display a caller ID pop-up? That's about $10-15 more than I'd be willing to shell out. (Version 1.0)

EJI Seems to have some memory leaks (10MB on launch, but climbs quickly thereafter); tons of interface bugs (changed account names don't stick, services are listed as "never updated" directly after an update, many essential fields and drop-downs are still in Italian); a lot of popular services are missing (where are sipGate and the US carriers?); and the one working service I could find, Vyke, repeatedly froze and called up the spinning beach ball after 40% of the SMS was sent. Oh, and quirky Address Book formattings, like, say, +44 for the country code and area codes in parentheses, appear to cause PiggySMS to short-circuit. The idea sounds promising, but a 1.0 release this is most certainly not. More like a 0.1. (Version 1.0)

EJI The first scrobbling app to successfully scrobble *all* the recently played tracks on my manually managed iPod Touch 2G to my Last.fm account. So now I'm using it in place of the official Last.fm client (too clunky) and AudioScrobbler (great features but too hit-and-miss). The memory leaks and runaway processor usage that some other users mentioned back in February seem to be fixed. SP has been running since boot-up this morning and is currently consuming 0% of the CPU and just under 37MB of RAM. Not too bad. For those still on the fence, SP offers some nice perqs. You can exclude tracks with a certain comment, ignore certain media, and there's seamless Growl integration. If it matched AudioScrobbler one-for-one in terms of features, it would be the Last.fm client of my dreams. (Version 0.50.10)

SoCal | Nov 3 2008 |
EJI I think this dev has unfairly received an awful lot of flack for what seems like a pretty standard donationware policy and a product description (for beta-level software, no less) that could have been better but certainly isn't the worst I've seen. I gave SoCal a try and I quite like it. It's much more accessible than Organized and more functional than DoBeDo, both of which have functioned as my widget to-do lists for ages. SoCal's integration with iCal is better than Check Off's menubar list, and it omits all the unnecessary bells and whistles of MenuMinder ($10) or DeJumble ($19!). Is it worth the $10 that the more feature-rich MenuMinder charges (as shareware, keep in mind) to get rid of the donation nag? I'd probably feel more comfortable donating $5. But it fills a niche that no other menubar to-do list does (at least the ones that I've tried), and I really can't quite understand why this app became the focus of so much animosity in its first few days on MU. I'd like to award five stars just to counter the one-star gripefest below, but I'll keep my rating independent. (Version 0.5+)

EJI Really great app. So far I've sent a handful of faxes through my Sipgate.de account (which doesn't even have the "Plus" fax option), and it's worked beautifully. When I had what I thought was an issue, he returned my e-mail within a day and encouraged me to continue providing feedback to improve Fossi. He's been extremely courteous, even in the face of poor spellers calling his free app "a waist of time." Since Apple's taken the modem out of Macs, this is a fantastic solution to the problem of convenient faxing from the print dialogue. And even if you've got an older Mac with a modem, this obviates the need to stay plugged into the phone line. (Version 1.0.3)

And iBank3 has them. I'm not really the power investor type, but I still spent all last night trying out this software. It's fantastic. Storyist | Jan 15 2008 |
I saw this pop up in my MacUpdate RSS and thought it might be useful. So I was going to give it a spin, but there's no way I'm going to pay $59 for story outline software with a few extra bells and whistles, no matter how nice it looks. I really like the corkboard visual layout with photos for characters, but for my purposes, it's better to create a slimmed-down version without any word processing functions for, say, $20. That way, I can stick with Pages, Word, Bean or WriteRoom for writing and use Storyist exclusively for conceptualization and outlines. (Version 1.3.5)

In addition to the outlining tools, it provides a word processor with a page layout view and support for headers, footers, and style sheets, a Wiki, and a project manager with fast, project-wide search capabilities. I encourage you to download it and give it a spin. If you are at Macworld this week, please stop by our booth (S-205). We have a show special price of $45 and I'd be delighted to give you a demo. SafariBlock | Dec 18 2007 |
EJI When I installed SB2r2, on launching Safari I got a "first-run" dialogue window that explained the basics of SB. It included a small checkbox for setting automatic updates. I couldn't close this dialogue box and I could not open a Safari browser window. Restarting the computer, repairing permissions and relaunching Safari yielded the same results. All I could do was force quit Safari and uninstall SB. I really relied on SB when I was running Tiger. But SB2 has been nothing but flaky. (Version 2.0r3)

7zX | Nov 30 2007 |
EJI 7zX created an invisible or "hidden" temp file (.7zXtemp/) on my desktop, which wreaked havoc during a backup operation with Carbon Copy Cloner. What happened was that somehow my entire user directory was aliased in this temp file, causing the clone operation to copy data infinitely (since the alias existed in the alias too). I have no idea how this happened, but I'm wary about reinstalling 7zX now that I've upgraded to Leopard. Has anyone else experience this? SkypeToAddressBook | Apr 21 2007 |
EJI I may be missing something essential, but I'm having a hard time understanding the real value of this app. So I've matched my Address Book contacts to their Skype names. Cool. But that doesn't appear to have had any useful effect on the apps themselves. For example, the contact icons from AB don't display in Skype, and there's no Skype field in the AB IM section. Nor is there a "Call contact using Skype" option in SkypeToAddressBook. Have I missed the point? Or is this more like a fun but pointless detour to Skyping rather than a direct (and more sensible) route? (Version 1.0)

EJI Wonderful app when used in conjunction with a Mac-compatiple GPS location device or a mapping app like Google Earth. I just used PGPSE to tag 200+ photos from a Paris trip using the coordinates from Google Earth, and it went smoothly. The coordinates appear in iPhoto's "Get Info" window and they can be used to map the shots in, say, Flickr for an interesting slideshow. Best of all, PGPSE doesn't (as far as my testing goes) strip the other EXIF data from the photos. v1.5 supports drag-and-drop, which was my only quibble with earlier versions. I don't really know how they could make it any easier. (Version 1.5)

Menufela | Oct 6 2006 |
EJI Very nice implementation, and should help to put an end to the menu bar burn-in I'm getting on my iMac G5's LCD. Mac OS X should do this by default. As a few other posters have mentioned, there are a few bugs with Menufela. - Doesn't play well with Unsanity's Windowshade "Minimize in place" option. Do so and the window will shrink and disappear somewhere offscreen. The only way to get it back is to quit the app and relaunch. - The "new mail" envelope is showing on the Entourage icon permanently now. Quitting and relaunching doesn't get rid of it. - On login, my menu extras hover at the top and don't vanish until the first time I call up the menu bar. - Apps like iTunes don't like to be maximized to the entire display. Minimize them, then maximize them again and they expand offscreen. - Like others have said, it would be nice if the menu bar didn't appear every time a user launches a new app. And it would be good if the app's window positioning automatically accounted for the presence/absence of the menu bar. And that's just what I've encountered in the past two hours. I really wish this had been issued as a beta for testing before the dev started charging $5 for it. Yeah, it's relatively cheap, but it's got too many glitches to make me feel entirely comfortable with using it. (Version 1.0)

Books | Jan 24 2006 |
EJI This (a7) is the first version of Books 3 that I've tried, and for software in alpha state, it's still highly useable. Books 3 corrects some of the inconveniences of its forerunner with, for example, multiple at-a-glance lists, great Spotlight integration and a fairly customizable two-pane, e-mail-like view. Opening and saving collections is now just as it should be: instant. And I really like the plug-in architecture -- this has amazing potential with export/import formats. (On that note, the forthcoming J2ME export for phones and PDAs ought to be great.) But I can't understand why ISBN isn't available as a column view choice, or the bottom pane (a plug-in, unfortunately, not in editable HTML format) should offer little more information than the top one. Multiple autofill doesn't seem to be there yet (Books 2 never quite nailed this) and good ol' HTML export is no longer an option due to the somewhat more elaborate Books Server. Also, the 22.5MB(!) disk image could be slimmed by half with a non-source code version. Minor flaws considered -- hey, it's still in alpha -- I still prefer this over Readerware, Booxter and the more beautiful but less practical Delicious Library. Books 3 is coming along nicely, and in its final release stage will likely provide many more features than its competitors at an unbeatable price. For my personal library it's just right. though I'd really like to know what bookstore owners think of it. I should think that it's worthy enough to be billed as the recommended Mac software on ABE. CHRIS KARR ISBN displaying on the main window is a bug and oversight on my part. This will be corrected in the next release. The bottom pane display is an HTML-based plugin that can be edited to your heart's content. If you're interested in checking it out, you can locate the "Default Display.plugin" bundle in either the source or the binary, and explore the bundle's contents to see how it works. I've been planning on documenting this better, but time is always limited (through such documentation is a priority). As for the HTML export - it's coming. The Books web server isn't intended to be used as a public website for the world to see - instead, it's intended to be used to share your book data on the local network. An HTML export option will be forthcoming for publishing to your own web servers for the entire world to see. If you have any other questions or concerns, don't hesitate to e-mail me at books@aetherial.net. I don't check these pages as often and I'd hate to see a bug report or good suggestion pass me by for that reason. (Version 3.0a7)
