EGN Perhaps a note on your website or a blog letting us know the release date and progress would keep all who are greatly affected by this delay informed. I enquired some time ago and was informed that it would be out "in a couple of weeks" but that did not happen. I am very much affected and no, the temporary solution will not do because I get tons of things to put into info.xhead every day. I have already had to move to MyApps to put my new software purchase info and serials there. This should have come out long ago. I am guessing you may loose clients (if not already). CleanApp | Jul 5 2009 |
EGN Well, I just did not trust this anymore, deleted it and requested a refund. Will not use it. I have found that a combination of Amnesia + Hazel will do much better with much less danger of deleting what should not be deleted. CleanApp requires too much overhead because you have to start really looking into what it "thinks" it should delete. Sometimes this is dozens of files. I don't have the time to be checking one by one and a lot of times one does not really know if a particular file or files should be removed or not. If this app does what the developers say it does. that it monitors from the moment you start installing an app, all the files that it installs it should be very easy to remove only what it installed. This does not seem to be the case. So, this app will not make it back into my group of utilities for a very long time, if it ever does. (Version 3.1.3)

CleanApp | Jun 15 2009 |
EGN The problem with what you report is that if you don't realize CleanApp screwed up "selecting" what it should it will delete tons of files necessary for the OS to work properly! These apps should be drag-and-drop-zap safe. Not everyone is going to use a magnifying glass to check on what it is about to delete. Others like Amnesia don't do this. In short, this app can really be dangerous to your systems health. (Version 3.1.2)

Sourceguardian PHP Encoder | Jun 7 2009 |
EGN Great for encoding PHP and works on all platforms I have tried it on. But support is really slow and the license changes every time you upgrade or reinstall which really stinks since you have to go to their web site and create/download another. This not always works correctly so you have to request support for one. Licensing scheme should be changed to a fixed license. I can understand the author wanting to control the number or installations, etc., but I'm sure there are better ways to do it. (Version 7.0)

Stone Hill Invoicer | Apr 3 2009 |
EGN This has all the necessary things to handle all type of invoicing and all the extras to email, save as PDF, etc. Client selection could be a bit more selective to handle Companies from AddressBook. As it is, the whole list is shown. The interface is not like most modern Cocoa apps. It looks outdated although the app version is very recent (2009). (Version 1.4)

Involer | Apr 3 2009 |
EGN Way, way, way too simple. Can't even create a product list with prices to not have to input the same info over and over. The AddressBook import can't use categories other than just personal contacts. If you have your clients identified as Company they don't show up. (Version 1.2)

Drive Genius | Dec 17 2008 |
EGN This is a nice interface with a lot of hot air under the hood. Period. Out of 2 Macs I used it on, one defragamented and is still working. Mind you, it did not really do much in terms of speed. The other, with an external FireWire HD which was the subject of the second defrag and had been working perfectly before, was turned into a brick. None of the DG utilities was able to fix it. Even the eternal Scan failed to report anything wrong with it. So, I used Apple's Disk Utility, erased the drive, partitioned it again and now it works perfectly! Just cloned my disk using Carbon Copy Cloner. I did contact support and they gave me the same response others have gotten about backing up (which I had) and that those utilities can mess up your disk, and that I had been warned by the program, and that even the guys at the Genius Bar used this to defrag clients Macs, etc., etc. All very nice but no fix to my problem. So, in the end, no lost data but about a day worth of work gone down the drain. If I had not gotten this with the MU promo I would have had a fit. Disk Utility fixed what this $99 program could not. EGN As others report, this does not work. Installing MySQL and activating Apache and PHP is quite easy. For MySQL just look it up here on MacUpdate. Be sure to download the correct version for you architecture (Intel or PPC). The installers will guide you through. Install MySQL, then the launcher an finally the control panel item so that you can start and stop your MySQL server). All you need to get it going is in the dmg you download. To enable PHP you must edit (as the root user) /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf and remove the leading pound sign (#) from line 114 (or close to that) that reads: LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so . Save the the httpd.conf file. To activate Apache just go to System Preferences->Sharing and click on Web Sharing option so that it is checked. That starts up the webserver. To test it, create a file (pinfo.php or whtever you like) in your Sites folder with: Then in your favourite browser: http://localhost/pinfo.php You should get the PHP config page. MySQL resides in /usr/local/mysql. (Version 5.5)

EGN This will be my final comment on this app. But let me just finish by stating that I don't have to call anyone a noob or say they were dropped on their heads too many times just because they don't like what I think of a particular application. That would be like me insulting you by saying that you are a moron because you can't remember passwords (which I'm not). Perhaps a bit of respect for those of us who think different from you would do you some good. I never insulted anyone with my comments and if anyone did take it as such, my apologies. If the app works great for you, fine. I never said it was a bad app, just suggested some might get a healthier brain by not using it. It is still a free internet as far as I know and anyone has a right to their say and that is what the comments section is for, be it positive or negative. And FYI I do have many many different passwords, servers and login sites. And I do remember most. Guess why? (Version 2.9.3b4)

What I posted was a just a COMMENT expressing that perhaps memory would best be served by remembering passwords and thus putting your brain to making connections instead of letting an app do it for you. The less you think, the less you remember and the idler you brain becomes. Putting info into your brain and making the connections and remembering all the info is like jogging or going to de gym, but you're doing it for your brain instead of your body. That way you don't have to also invest money in purchasing flash card and memory mapping apps here to help your idle brain remember! Get my point? (Version 2.9.3b2)

EGN I have this and used it for some time. It is very handy. But it made my brain lazy. "Mad Cow " has much to do with not making connections in the brain and keeping it exersized by remembering things. Passwords are one of those things. Also, security will always be better if passwords are not in some computer somewhere, and worse if kept on the net, no matter how encrypted. In my brain, that is where they are best kept and used regularly, keeps me brain fit. Oh, and I do have lots of passwords, server logins, and other info I have to remember. (Version 2.9.2)

DTEARE Thanks for the laugh with the "Mad Cow" comment :) While I am a believer in Brain Training, I think there are much more interesting and effective ways to do that other remembering passwords. For example, get yourself a Nintendo DS and a few of the "games" that specifically target Brain Training. A huge part of Brain Training is keeping your mind flexible by constantly thinking about new things or existing things from a new angle. Unless you change your password every few days, the repetitive task of typing the same password will not train your brain at all. Your brain has "been there, done that", so to speak, and no new connections will be made. By letting 1Password remember your passwords, you can free your brain to think about other things and take your Brain Training to the next level. Alternatively, you could use 1Password to generate a new 20 character random password each week that you need to memorize. By having the password in 1Password, if you ever forget the password, you can look it up in 1Password and try to re-commit it to memory. One last point: your 1Password data is NOT stored on any web server anywhere. The 1Password keychain file is encrypted *and* stored on your local machine. The my1Password service *was* an optional service, and as explained in my previous post it is being closed down. Co-author of 1Password (Version 2.9.2)

REALbasic 2009 | Jul 22 2008 |
EGN I come from the web-app programming world. Had been looking for a good, solid development platform for Mac. Tried Xcode, read Hillegrass (Cocoa programming for Mac OS X-3rd edition), but man, Objective C is not my cuppa! And, I could only develop for the Mac using these (maybe porting and jumping through fire hoops could ge my apps on other OSs). Also tried Runtime Rev. but found that to have an inconsistent interface, very un-Mac-like, almost Java-ish, and with a language that although is almost like spoken English, is very hard to remember. And the "stacks" deal... Tried a couple more and those were worse. Then I found RealBasic. The interfase is consistent (and as Mac-like as can be), the documentation adequate and the learning curve much, much flatter than Xcode/Objective C or other competitors. You do all your coding from a single window, even creating databases and tables. Plus, you can code once and use the apps you create in three different operating systems (if you use the Pro version; personal is just for the OS you are on; on Linux, RB is free!). With RB you can program using OOP or from the top-down. I have not had it for long but it looks like I'll keep this one. (Version R3.1)

MACUPDATE ADMIN From the developer's blog, http://escapingblog.blogspot.com/ Work on Flux is still happening! First of all, a belated happy new year to you all. Secondly, I'd like to reassure everyone who has expressed an interest, that Flux is still very much under development. We've missed deadlines more times than I really care to admit, and while I could offer a wide range of reasons and excuses why this has happened, I'm not going to. The simple fact is that we promised more than we could deliver in a relatively short space of time, and we're now experiencing some pretty bad karma for that. All I can really do is apologise right now and promise to all Flux customers that we WILL issue a release soon, and many more after that. (Version 1.0.15)

OmniWeb | Jan 20 2008 |
EGN I had been looking for a browser that supported blocking everything globally (cookies, popups, etc.) and then allowing the fine tuning of all these for single websites. OmniWeb does this stupendously! I also compared memory consumption of OmniWeb and other browsers and find no such huge difference as reported by others. Certainly the biggest hog seems to be FireFox. But given all the additional things that OmniWeb provides such as being able to clear cache by site and also, the ability to pick which search engine one wishes to use, there is no question that OW tops the rest. The price is very good, specially ont he family pack. Have made it my default browser. (Version 5.6)

If I put it on the list and then click on Item price drop to: and set 200.00, it starts bringing up popups with "Price too low to display" which is false, the page for that product states a stable price of $232.72. And it switches back to "Do not Watch". I also have another product under watch: ASIN: B000HNL8G0. That behaves OK, does not loose the "What to watch" state. So no, the app is still not working correctly. (Version 0.2a)

EGN The idea for this is very good and I was looking for something just like this. But: it doesn't work correctly. I put in 3 items to track. It will automatically change to "Do not watch" although I have specified that it is to watch it and have entered a price. It sort of switches on or off whatever it wants when it want to without me changing anything. Also, the links that come up in the alert window bring up 404 error pages at Amazon and items in the popup always say "Too low to display" which is false. AMAZONWATCHER Hi, the product page actually says "click here to see the price". Only when you click the link it will show the price. Here's the situation: the program uses a free amazon web service to grab the item information (which is very light-weighted), not by crawling the actual amazon website (that will be too costly for web traffic). I can definitely hack my code to crawl the item page to grab the price when the webservice returns "price too low to display". But it will very likely jam your network and amazon also will hunt me down. I will continue to look for better options but for now it can only be what it is. Sorry. Thankfully I think such "price too low to display" case does not occur often. (Version 0.2a)

On all the others, everyting worked. Sound, networking, graphics, you name it. And being able to run XP apps in their own window is a plus. On Parallels that still does not work as I0d like.
