EGINZBURG  This is the first time that I have a problem with Security Update. After a long boot I was presented with a login screen asking for the user name + password. It would not accept my username and password so I had to restart again. After the next boot everything went fine and it logged in automatically. WEIRD.

EGINZBURG  Logitech must be crazy. This is what I received from their tech support. It is laughable and very sad at the same time.

Thank you for contacting Logitech Customer Support. My name is XXXXX and I will be assisting you with your case involving MOUSEMAN TRAVELER.

As I understand it, you're wondering where can you download the APE driver for your mouse and completely uninstall APE framework from your system. If this is not correct, please let me know.

Before proceeding further, I would like to gather some information to better understand and assist you with this issue.

1. Where did you get the APE from?

2. Did it installed together with LCC 2.1.3?

Please let me know if this resolves your issue or if you require further assistance as I will be more than happy to assist you with your issue.

EGINZBURG  Do not use LCC after 2.0 unless you want Unsanity APE hack to slow down your GUI responsiveness!!! Check with Activity monitor if you have aped process running. To uninstall APE follow this link http://softwaretrenches.com/2006/08/removing_unsanitys_application.html. Then go back to LCC 2.0 if you can.

1. NOPE. Logitech's software is of their own doing, and nobody else's.

2. The APE framework from Unsanity doesn't "cause Mac OS X to slow down".

3. If your computer is slower after installing Logitech software, then Unsanity is obviously not your problem.

4. Mac OS X has built-in drivers that work for most mouses. Therefore, most mouses (even Logitech's) work without the need to install additional software like this.

EGINZBURG  What's the "aped" process in the activity monitor after I install lcc then? What's Scroll enhancer.ape? I suspect it is build upon Unsanity APE framework.

After i kill the 'aped' process the system is much snappier.

You can google the net and find many instances when APED is causing problems which also include kernel panics.

I am happy with my Logitech mouse but I don't need any haxies installed on my computer.

EGINZBURG  Some more info from Apple's discussion forum below.

Hi, Eric.

APE underlies virtually all Unsanity interface hacks. There's also a free developer version that is embedded in many third-party apps, such as some third-party menu bar extras, and even some commercial code, e.g. last I checked the latest versions of Logitech Control Center use the developer edition of APE. In such cases, you'll find APE has been installed without your knowledge.

I neither use nor recommend Unsanity's hacks and avoid third-party code that depends on APE: such hacks are often problematic, especially after Mac OS X Updates. Recently, a potential security exposure identified with APE: see "MOAB-08-01-2007: Application Enhancer (APE) Local Privilege Escalation." I can't say if this exposure has been corrected.

Good luck!

WONDERING  Also, even though the 'official' version is from June 2006, they do have a link to their Latest Beta build. You might give the latest 0.7 svn build a try.

http://chucker.mystfans.com/opensource/transmission/

I have tried those and they seem to be working. (I just wish that they would release a version 0.7, since it has been 8 months in the works, and does work ;)
