Adobe Flash Player

EGGSHELL  Its 2009 and I just can't believe how such application did establish itself as an internet video standard today . It's ultra heavy , it's the main reason for crashes in all the browsers and it's even getting worse with updates

I use many Adobe products ( Ps , Lr and Br are essential tools for me ) and I'm used to their stable performance so Flash player is really an exception

EGGSHELL  This app is a fine example of what happens when aesthetics gets priority over usability .

EGGSHELL  I was a happy user until the day I had to do a wedding slideshow for a client and I decided ( luckily for me )to test the final product on a windows machine before sending it . It was a bitter surprise - the standalone player was OSX only !

The only other high quality export option was to make a 1080p video but even at 1080p and 60 fps the image was no way near as good as the standalone player .

Unfortunately ProShow is not available for mac but that at least is understandable . Having a program that is only accessible ( if you care for perfect image quality ) to the relatively small mac users community is not

EGGSHELL  Very pleasant looking app , the only thing that buggs me is the weird gestures , something simpler would be better - like using the additional mouse buttons on hover ( for back/forward ) and the scroll button for the volume ( also only on hover )

Apple Safari

EGGSHELL  The sooner they fix the memory leaks the better

Same usage ( 6-7 tabs max ) safari 4.0.3 ~ 200-500+ MB used ram ( and keeps going up )

safari 3 ~ 150-250 MB

Tried to do a practical test - see if safari would release that ram on a heavy load - not a bit back

Safari+ Photoshop+Bridge+Lightroom till the free system memory goes ~ 9-10 MB ( out of 3GB system ram )

Safari ( on which I purposefully closed all tabs but one ) still keeps his 500+ MB

completely ridiculous

EGGSHELL  Light , snappy and stable

Two things that keep me from making it default video player over VLC

- no way to save video settings in the control panel ( every time you launch it you have to readjust )

- no audio equalizer

EGGSHELL  This app was exactly what I was searching for - a simple manager ( browser ) that unites all the movies that i have on my several HDs and uses the default system player when launching a film . The interface is minimalistic and pleasant to the eye but it needs much more polishing to make it really usable

- the 3D view is difficult to use with many films ( even in 1920x1080 full screen )

- title display in 3D view is plain ugly

- info on hover should at least be with reduced opacity

- the row view needs some kind of scroll / mouse control ( mouse buttons , mouse wheel , automatic scroll when cursor is over the edges or left/right from the center ... , there are many options )

- automatic hd scan by title - that should be a priority

- smaller memory usage - with 101 movies in my collection it takes 240mb ram ( way too much for a browser )

- sometimes on launch I get the loading spinning wheel not wanting to disappear , relaunch usually solves that

Developper should take a look at Plex for gui solutions and aesthetics

EGGSHELL  Very stable and with suprisingly small system footprint ( both cpu and ram )

The choice and reliability of the proposed ( allegedly thousands ) channels is very poor though . Most of them never work ( I tested many channels - both very popular and newly added ones ) . Mediocre image quality makes the few that do unwatchable in the long run

Very decent app - very poor content

Warp

EGGSHELL  It's a handy little app and it's free , it makes using spaces even more natural

One big downside is the WarpDaemon uses almost 200MB ( with only 4 spaces ).

RAM is cheap nowadays but that's really too much for a tiny background add-on .

I'll keep an eye on future versions , hopefully they'll reduce drastically the memory usage
