Permanent Eraser | Nov 28 2007 |
EDENWAITH The problem with Permanent Eraser hanging has been reproduced. This only seems to happen at times when a large batch of files is being erased. I created a folder of 3000 files, then started to erase them using PE 2.3.2. Around the 250th file, PE stopped erasing. I ran another test, and it had similar results where it had problems around the 250th file (it wasn't the same exact number, but it was close). However, this test was run a third time on another computer (a recent Mac mini), and it never had encountered any problems. I will investigate this issue further to solve this issue. GUI Tar | Sep 27 2007 |
EDENWAITH That is a good point about the lack of zip compression in GUI Tar. There are two reasons why zip compression isn't available yet in GUI Tar. 1) The Finder in Mac OS 10.3 (and later) has a Create Archive command, which makes it easy to create zip files. Since a large number of Mac users have at least Mac OS 10.3, most people can already create zip files. 2) Adding zip compression functionality was originally planned for the original release of GUI Tar, but due to some technical problems at the time, it was not added. Permanent Eraser | Jun 5 2007 |
EDENWAITH The largest slow downs I've seen while deleting is deleting an application (which often contains a lot of smaller files inside it), yet a single file of the same size can be deleted relatively quickly. I will need to test deleting a large iso file and see if I encounter the same problems that you've been having. (Version 2.3.2)

EDENWAITH What is meant by "traditional means" are specialized software programs and techniques which can scan a drive and retrieve data from files which were deleted, but not fully erased. If someone is looking for a way to overwrite their files, then things like Secure Empty Trash, Permanent Eraser, or Disk Utility can be used to erase files or zero out an entire drive. But if you want to make sure that no one will ever be able to retrieve your data, about the only fully secure method is to grind and incinerate your drive. (Version 2.3.2)

Permanent Eraser | Jun 2 2007 |
EDENWAITH Secure Empty Trash uses the 7-pass DoD algorithm to erase over the data in your Trash. Permanent Eraser ups this level by using the 35-pass Gutmann Method when overwriting your data. Permanent Eraser's other advantages over using the Secure Empty Trash are that PE can erase selected files, instead of only those in the Trash and it can also erase CD-RWs and DVD-RWs. EDENWAITH The developer's responsiveness to the comments of AddMovie is highly laudable. After my first review of AddMovie, most (if not all) of my concerns have been addressed to create an even better program. Thanks! (Version 1.1.10)

GUI Tar | May 19 2007 |
EDENWAITH You are correct that the file should be smaller after you have compressed it (using a format such as gz, bz2, Z, or 7z). There are cases where the compression is very small and does not provide for much benefit, especially if the file (or group of files) are already in a compressed format. An example is if you are trying to compress a JPG image, which is already a compressed format, so trying to shrink it even further does not help a ton. However, trying to compress a large text document should have decent results. The only other way I could see a file increasing in size, is if you only archived it (tar), which just packs a file (or usually, a group of files) into a single file, but it does not compress it. Permanent Eraser | Apr 1 2007 |
EDENWAITH If you launched Permanent Eraser by clicking on it, its default action is to erase the Trash. However, if you are trying to delete certain files which are not in the Trash, drag the file(s) onto the PE icon to delete the selected file(s). If the application responded in a manner other than how you expected, please elaborate further on how you were using PE. (Version 2.3)

AddMovie | Mar 31 2007 |
EDENWAITH The basic principle behind AddMovie is simple, but wonderful and useful. I've been searching for a utility to easily stitch a couple of movie files together, and none of the software I already had was doing the trick. Unfortunately, I feel that the interface is somewhat kludgy and it doesn't always flow as well as it could. I first expected the Add button to add movies to the list. The Add button actually combines the movies together, so that button should probably be named something more appropriate, like Merge, or Save Movie. I was also looking to see if there was a way to click on a menu item or button to get an Open File dialog to add movies. That doesn't exist either, movies have to be added by dragging and dropping into the main window. When I did drag and drop my files into the list, they were scattered in the list, and not sorted as they appeared in the Finder, which struck me as odd. Fortunately, there is a Sort button, but that the files ended up jumbled in the first place seems odd to me. And when I tried to reorganize the list by moving some items around, the program locked up on me. One feature I'd love to see would be a Finder-like column view which would allow one to preview each movie clip listed in the table, which would make it easier for someone to determine which video is which when sorting them out in a particular order. So did this utility do the job? One set of movies I put together flowed together wonderfully, no problems at all. Another set I put together seemed to lock up when trying to transition from one movie to the next. If you need a simple utility for a one-time job, this application should do the trick for you. JPPAGLIARO I will be adding the ability to add movies to the file list using the a file menu command. The issue with the name of the "Add" button has been considered before - I'll take your suggestions into consideration. The feature for previewing movies has also been added to the wish list in the past, haven't yet had time to get to that for other tasks, etc. Also, the sort issue has come up previously and I will again consider it, especially the suggestion you provided. Finally, if the program crashed on you (which may be different from hanging) please send the crash log Thanks for the feedback, but not for the 2-star rating :) (Version 1.1.3)

JPPAGLIARO I addressed most of your issues in version 1.1.4. In this version I: • Added a side drawer window for viewing items in the file list. • Added a "Browse" button to the file list window to display a file navigation window for selecting files to add to the list. This is provided as an alternative to drag and drop. • Added a "Browse" menu item to the File meu to display a file navigation window for selecting files to add to the list. This is provided as an alternative to drag and drop. • When a collection of files is added to the file list at once it is sorted as the Finder does. (To sort the complete list as the Finder does click the "Sort" button.) As for why successive use of the program did not work for you I'd have to discuss that with you offline. Playback issues could be caused by the movie viewer your using. (Version 1.1.3)

MagiCal | Jan 23 2007 |
EDENWAITH Once my last menu item calendar application was no longer being developed, I needed a replacement, especially something that was more complete, but didn't have to be everything and the kitchen sink. All I need is a quick way to see what day and month it is by glancing at the menu bar, and to be able to easily scroll through the months without having to open Apple's System Preferences. Some calendar programs try to add extra features like iCal integration, but that far exceeds my needs. There have been a few odd drawing quirks here and there with the icon, but once those are ironed out, this program will be perfect. Simple, and great for my needs. (Version 1.0.3)

Permanent Eraser | Jan 6 2007 |
EDENWAITH What you described is how Permanent Eraser works. If you just click on the application, it launches and erases the contents of the Trash. On the first time that Permanent Eraser is launched, a dialog box should appear and warn you what is about to happen. If you have files that you might not be ready to discard yet, placing them in the Trash is not the safest place to put them, by general practice. But if you want to just shred one or two files that aren't in the Trash, drag the file(s) over Permanent Eraser and it will erase just those selected files, and nothing from the Trash. Adium X | Apr 3 2006 |
EDENWAITH Adium is chatting done right! My job uses a variety of IM networks (Yahoo!, Jabber, AIM/iChat), so it was somewhat of a pain to have multiple IM programs open at once, but once I found Adium, the search was over! Not only does Adium do an excellent job in supporting multiple IM clients, but it also has excellent features, some which go far beyond what a casual user needs, but hidden well enough without having to stick out. This isn't some awkward Java port like Psi, but a full fledged Mac application which looks, sounds, tastes, smells, and feels like a fully genuine Mac app! I love even the small touches like the application icon with the duck being either awake, alseep, or flapping its wings depending on what state the program is in. Awesome! And if that isn't great enough, it doesn't get in your face like Yahoo! or AIM which constantly wants to pop up or throw a bunch of ads for extraneous services around. If you need an IM client for the Mac, THIS IS THE ONE. (Version 0.89)

DiskWarrior | Apr 3 2006 |
EDENWAITH I was using TechTool Pro 4.1.1 to check for any hidden hardware problems, and it "found" some problems with the file system. So I repaired the supposed problems, but then came up with a real problem...the computer wouldn't boot any longer! Apple's Disk Utility reported an invalid B-node tree, and it couldn't repair it. So I splurged and bought DiskWarrior, hoping that I could recover the data and not have to spend a day wiping the hard drive and reinstalling all of the software. On my initial try, DiskWarrior reported that the disk was too damaged to repair. However, after contacting Alsoft's support, they walked me through an alternate procedure to recover my data, and everything appears to be in place. After this experiment, I decided to experiment on my 2nd generation iPod which is no longer seen by iTunes or the Finder (it was OK until I installed the January 2006 iPod update). DiskWarrior did its stuff, repaired the iPod, and now the iPod appears again in the Finder and iTunes, and I'm listening to songs off of my iPod again! While TechTool might be useful in trying to find problems with RAM, it has messed up two computers by claiming to have found problems with the file system, when it only created problems. DiskWarrior has already fixed two problems for me in just one day. (Version 3.0.3)
