EDDIE_KELLEY When processor activity is high, the temperature of the processor increases. This is normal behavior in all computer processors. If a cooling mechanism in your computer fails, the temperature increase may be problematic, but for most machines the increase in temperature should be harmless. (Version 0.3.4b)

EDDIE_KELLEY This problem was related to window size settings. Either removing preferences, or re-sizing the window may solve issues carried across from older versions of FreeDMG. (Version 0.5.5b)

EDDIE_KELLEY The newest version of Rember (0.3.4b) includes a memtest executable that is more compatible with 64-bit Intel based machines. This should eliminate crashing and slow testing on Apple's newest hardware. (Version 0.3.4b)

MDD-MAN I am very grateful for Rember and Memtest, and only want to help improve them. It would be very nice if the memory test would permit different ranges of memory to be tested sequentially (or by some other algorithm that covers the entire memory range). If this is already done, then, in the immortal words of SNL great Emily LaTella -- never mind!) Thus before each test a different memory range would be allocated and locked in, which would slow things down a bit. A possible algorithm for 2 GB RAM, where (say) only 1.5 GB can be tested by Rember, would be to do #1-to-#1.5GB on the 1st pass, #1.5GB-to-#2GB and #1-to-#1GB on the 2nd pass, etc. (Version 0.3.4b)

EDDIE_KELLEY Please provide more information about the crashing that you are experiencing: Machine type (ie. G4, G5, Intel) Operating system version (ie. 10.3, 10.4) Amount of installed memory At what point is the program freezing? Does it freeze on launch? Does it freeze once you've started tests? EDDIE_KELLEY The original SpotlightIndexer disk image has been replaced with a gzip formatted disk image, which should be more compatble with most web browsers than the bz2 format. Thanks to everyone for the feedback! (Version 0.2.2b)

EDDIE KELLEY The Web Server running at www.kelleycomputing.net is using a "performance cache". This allows the server to provide clients on the internet a cached version of the web page, without having to read from disk. This speeds up the browsing experience in some cases. The reason little snitch was complaining, was because the port 16080 is used (instead of port 80). Little Snitch is telling you this because you have not chosen to trust connections using that port yet. More information can be found by googling "web performance cache 16080". (Version 0.5.3b)

EDDIE KELLEY I have posted a version of Rember that includes the alternative memtest executable (for systems lower than 10.3.9 and G3 based machines) on the Rember download page (http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember). (Version 0.3b)

EDDIE KELLEY Version 0.2.3b of Rember is compatible with the G3 processor. I would recommend using it. That version can be found at www.kelleycomputing.net/rember. (Version 0.3b)

SpotlightIndexer | Aug 2 2005 |
EDDIE KELLEY In talking to Apple Developers, I have discovered that they would LIKE to import the developer documentation (which is not imported by Spotlight), but can't find a way for the results to be posted based on relevence rankings. I personally needed searchable access to this documentation, and that is reason enought to import these directories. The biggest reason that Apple doesn't Import information from system directories is the same (and frustrating) reason that they disable searches in the "System" directory in 10.3. Although this (limiting searches) is a great fix for keeping people out of places they don't normally belong, it is crippling for software developers, and those who have to be more in touch with the system. With Spotlight, the only way to get access to the "System" directory for searches is to force an import of the folder contents, while the user could search specific places in 10.3, there is no way to do this (without forcing import) in 10.4. ANONYMOUS FreeDMG is also crashing immediately on my machine (G5, running 10.2.8). Too bad it's happening with this version; all the ones before have been troublefree. Back to the drawing board on this one, I'm afraid. (Version 0.5.2b)

EDDIE KELLEY The .zip format will not preserve resource forks. The memtest program would not be affected by this caveat, but this is a reason why most Mac OS X applications are distributed inside of disk images (.dmg) or Stuffit archives (.sit and .sitx). (Version 4.05M)

EDDIE There is a limit in 10.3 and lower that only allow any one application to allocate 2 GB of RAM. Apple's memory testing utilities have the same problems. Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) should solve this issue, as it is a 64 bit operating system. (Version 0.2.2b)
