DTEARE  Thank you for the suggestion.

We have looked at Chrome and have found that it does things completely differently than Firefox and Safari, so it will take some time to add support. The good news is it looks like we can provide at least a subset of 1Password's features in Chrome, so with any luck, a future release of 1Password will have Chrome support.

With that said, we are busy on 1Password 3 at the moment. Once we get 1Password 3 released and things calm down, we will be excited to investigate Chrome further. Luckily Chrome is still not officially released, so we still have some time :)

Cheers!

DTEARE  Thanks for the tip!

I'm not exactly sure why the multiple buttons appear as we check for that scenario, but next time I am in that code I'll see if we can find a way to play nicer with SafariStand.

DTEARE  Upek has encountered some issues getting the Eikon to fully support Snow Leopard. They have some bug reports opened with Apple and are working with them to resolve them.

I am not sure when these issues will be resolved, but hopefully they are fixed soon.

DTEARE  Do not worry about the yellow highlighter effect for copying :) This was an experiment and we have already decided to change it. We have a new, simpler design that will be implemented before the final 3.0 release.

Please join us in the 1Password 3 Early Access forum where this topic has been discussed in depth.

As for the main 1Password support forum, I see 4 unread threads and they are all under 3 hours old. After replying here I was on my way to answer those :)

In any event, I'm happy that you're happy now :)

DTEARE  I'm not sure what is happening but 1Password definitely does not trash your old keychain during the upgrade. We simply read the data from it and create a brand new keychain in a separate folder.

If you can contact us at support (at) agilewebsolutions (dot) com with the above description, we can help more. Please include your Diagnostics Report as well to help us track down the issue more quickly. DTEARE  Thanks for the feedback everyone!

We try not to upgrade more than twice a month, but some months like this one get a little crazy with new OS X releases and such. We had to release several updates to make sure Snow Leopard users would receive a smooth upgrade experience.

Now that Snow Leopard is out, the upgrades should slow down.

DTEARE  I just wanted to mention that syncing was the #1 issue in the original version of 1Password touch. We addressed this in version 2 by completely rewriting the sync to make it easier to use, a lot faster, and more robust. It has only been a few weeks, but so far the new WiFi sync has proven to be much more reliable than the original version. If you tried 1Password touch in the past and had troubles with syncing to your Mac, please try the new version.

For details on using the new Wifi Sync feature, we have a new screencast showing how much easier syncing is in the new version in the User Guide:

http://help.agile.ws/1Password_touch/sync_to_mac.html

Please give it a try and let us know if you have any issues or questions.

DTEARE  I'm sorry for the trouble you encountered UETLI, and I'm sorry it took me so long to find your comment here.

Syncing was definitely the #1 problem area in the last release. It worked fine for the majority of users, but sadly there were several issues that we could not fix in the original design. In version 2.0 we completely redid the sync implementation to make it easier, faster, and more robust.

Please upgrade to version 2 and let us know how it goes for you. For full details on the new sync as well as a walkthrough video, see this page in the User Guide:

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

DTEARE  I understand exactly where you're coming from; we actually hear this a lot as on the surface Safari's autofill and 1Password's features overlap. In reality, 1Password's features start where Safari autofill ends. Let me give a few examples to back up that statement.

First, Safari and other built-in browser password managers have troubles on many financial websites. Many websites have multiple password fields, disable Safari's autofill feature, use multi-step login steps, randomly generate field names, or use other techniques that often cause the standard Autofill to fail. 1Password bends over backwards to make as many of these work as possible.

Second, Safari's Autofill only works in Safari. It sounds obvious, but consider what a pain it will be if you ever switch browsers. 1Password allows you to store all your web passwords in one place and access them everywhere. With 1Password, the days of manually copying usernames and passwords from one browser to another are gone :)

Third, Safari's Autofill does not work automatically if you have multiple accounts for a website. With 1Password's menu it is very natural to have many accounts, whereas with Safari you need to manually type the username to get the "Autofill" to kick in. This behavior is quite confusing, and it is not uncommon to find "how to find your Safari login" blog posts.

Fourth, you can sync 1Password with your iPhone so you always have your passwords available with you.

Fifth, Safari fills forms on pages with URLs that are an exact match to what it has saved. 1Password offers precise URL matching so that the most relevant saved Login is selected by default, but also presents other matching Logins as options. This means if a web site moves its login page, 1Password can still log you in. In fact, 1Password can even use the information saved on a registration page to fill a form on the login page!

Of course there are more features as well but I don't want to type an entire essay here :)

Lastly, I wanted to mention you are right that Autofilling a web site when you visit it is a nice feature and it is something we're considering adding. The main reason we haven't yet is because 1Password has a feature called Go&Fill. What this does is it allows you to type in a few characters of the site you want to go to, and 1Password will take you to that site, fill in the login information, *and* automatically submit the form for you. Go&Fill is so much more convenient than Autofilling a page (where you have to type the URL and press 'login') that we've resisted adding Autofill, but I think we will end up adding it anyway as everyone has their own way of doing things.

Cheers!

I guess that's really my problem. I've done the downloads, control-clicked on the tool-bar, found all sorts of icons, but the 1P is still missing. I guess I read somewhere today that the Beta 5 version may fix this; but I couldn't find a Beta 5 version to download.

What's next?

Thanks,

DTEARE  I'm sorry for the delay on the Upek Eikon finger print scanner integration. There was a miscommunication between Upek and I at Macworld Expo in January. We were demoing a working Alpha of 1Password+Eikon and Todd (on the Upek team) assumed that meant the beta would only be a few weeks away and was telling everyone the Beta would be available by the "end of January". Having just been blessed by the arrival of my second child, I planned for a lot of time off and was aiming for late February. Somehow we never managed to realize what the other was saying and I apologize for that.

We have also been delayed by a few other factors as well, so the Beta won't be available as early as I wanted. Please check the Announcements forum at http://support.agilewebsolutions.com over the next month or two as we'll be announcing it there.

DTEARE  We are actively working on version 3 and it is looking pretty darn good. It is taking a lot of time to get things polished, so it will be a while longer before it is released. Because of this, we keep going back and updating version 2.x when we have important improvements.

I don't want to give a date as they tend to always be wrong, but I can say you should visit our forum periodically as we plan on releasing the 3.0 Alpha version there first.

By the way, because 3.0 is coming "soon", we changed the online store so new purchases will get a free upgrade to 3.0. This change was made on Jan 30th, so any purchase made after that date will get the 3.0 upgrade for free.

Cheers!

DTEARE  Thanks for the laugh with the "Mad Cow" comment :)

While I am a believer in Brain Training, I think there are much more interesting and effective ways to do that other remembering passwords. For example, get yourself a Nintendo DS and a few of the "games" that specifically target Brain Training.

A huge part of Brain Training is keeping your mind flexible by constantly thinking about new things or existing things from a new angle. Unless you change your password every few days, the repetitive task of typing the same password will not train your brain at all. Your brain has "been there, done that", so to speak, and no new connections will be made.

By letting 1Password remember your passwords, you can free your brain to think about other things and take your Brain Training to the next level. Alternatively, you could use 1Password to generate a new 20 character random password each week that you need to memorize. By having the password in 1Password, if you ever forget the password, you can look it up in 1Password and try to re-commit it to memory.

One last point: your 1Password data is NOT stored on any web server anywhere. The 1Password keychain file is encrypted *and* stored on your local machine. The my1Password service *was* an optional service, and as explained in my previous post it is being closed down.

Cheers!

DTEARE  We have received a few emails about the the my1Password Web Service. Questions ranged from what it is to why it has gotten slower recently.

The my1Password Web Service is a web service in Alpha (i.e. under development and still in testing) that allows you to sync your data between your Macs. 1Password for Mac, however, stores all your data on your local hard drive no information is sent to any web sites.

Recently many people have started to experience a "timed out" error when using the service. What has happened is the Web Service has experienced a surge in traffic recently and the performance has degraded considerably. I am sorry for the trouble. I had tried to keep the Alpha testing group small but I think what happened was people elected not to use their invitations immediately when I sent them, so each week I would send more, and I think people just recently started using them and overloaded the server.

We are at a cross roads with the my1Password web service at the moment. The my1Password service is a proof of concept that we used to "test the water" so-to-speak. The future of the service is uncertain and that is why we have not invested the resources to make the web server faster, at least until we decide on the direction we would like to take.

Please see The Future of the my1Password Web Service thread in the Alpha testers forum to see what we are currently planning:

http://support.agilewebsolutions.com/showthread.php?t=12325

Essentially the current line of thought is to shut down the my1Password Web Service and instead build its killer features directly into the 1Password and the new Agile Keychain.

Cheers!

I'm not sure what the issue is but will be happy to help you track it down. Often this happens during a manual update if the browsers are not closed before replacing your local copy of 1Password. Since you mentioned you also tried to upgrade from within 1Password, this might not be the issue.

DTEARE  Thanks! I'm glad you like 1Password!

Regarding Opera, we really want to support it as we are big Opera fans (we used Opera lot when we were stuck on Windows). Sadly at this time Opera does not provide an extension mechanism required for 1Password.

The last version of Opera has added support for simple extensions but it is not enough to provide 1Password integration. Hopefully this trend continues and we will be able to support Opera in future.

With that said, the new my1Password service will support Opera:

http://my.1password.com

This service only uses Javascript so it works perfectly fine in Opera.

Please keep in touch and continue to let us know how to improve.

Regarding streamlining the Change Password process, we are addressing this in the upcoming 2.6 release. 2.6 will detect the change password form and prompt you to update an existing web form.

As for editing web forms, that will need to a while longer. It is on our radar screen, but has not 'bubbled up' to the top of the priority list, yet. It will soon though :)

DTEARE  Hi Dr. Adrien,

I'm not sure I fully understand the issues you had, but I will be more than happy to help solve them. If you email us at support (at) agilewebsolutions dot com, I can help more.

With that said, I have 2 guesses at what the issue might be.

First, it sounds like Safari's AutoFill might have been enabled at the same time as 1Password. While technically this is ok, 1Password is a super set of Safari's AutoFill so it is recommended to turn off Safari's AutoFill:

http://1passwd.com/help/501/disable_safari_autofill

Second, since you mentioned you are a single user in a secure office, you might want to relax the Keychain locking settings. You can change the keychain preferences so that it does not lock as often, or you can disable it entirely, depending on your needs.

http://1passwd.com/help/604/keychain_preferences

I hope that helps. Feel free to email us and we can help more.

DTEARE  From what I understand there are (were) two issues with Firefox HTTP Auth windows.

One is related to the Leopard upgrade. Roustem was able to reproduce the problem on his local machine and he fixed and released an update in about one week.

The second issue is related to proxy servers. It seems on some machines if you go through a proxy server, the HTTP Auth window causes Firefox to freeze. This issue was reported several weeks ago, but we have not been able to recreate it, which as you can imagine makes it harder to fix.

I suspect you are using a proxy server, and were unfortunate enough to hit this issue. If this is the case, the workaround is the same as I probably told you in email and/or the forum: disable the 1Password HTTP auth support. You can do this by opening 1Password > Preferences > General, and check the "Use browser's HTTP Authentication windows" checkbox.

This "solution" is certainly not ideal, but it is a workable workaround until we are able to pin this problem down.

Cheers!

DTEARE  Thanks for the feedback!

We just fixed the Safari icon in the latest 2.5.3 release. The 2.5.2 release was focused exclusively on making things work -- sadly the nice icon had to wait a few days :)

DTEARE  Localization is something we definitely want to do. Sadly we are swamped with Leopard and the 2.5 release was also very huge.

Once things calm down we can look at this again. Some good news I can give you is we made a dedicated effort to make sure the 2.5 codebase could be localized easily.

As for Leopard, I think we finally got all the issues resolved. Please see this thread for a preview of the upcoming 2.5.2 release:

DTEARE  Leopard support has been tough. The developer build given to use by Apple was quite a bit different than the retail version sold on Friday.

We think we have it ironed out now and will release 2.5.2 soon. For a sneak peak, see this post:

DTEARE  Thanks!

Shirra support is on the radar screen. We actually started work on it over a month ago, but the 2.5 release and Leopard took up all our time so we didn't finish.

As for customization of items, we should be able to do that too one the Leopard wave subsides :)

DTEARE  Thanks for the update. I'm not sure why you needed to reinstall the extension, it should have happened automatically.

One thing that can happen is if you launch the old 1Passwd, the settings are read by the new 1Password, and that can mess things up.

We had a lot of Beta users experience this crash, so we now detect when this happens and alert you to reinstall the extension.

Thanks again for the feedback!

DTEARE  @dgoldblatt: In the current version of 1Password for iPhone, you are right, you need to type your passwords into web sites. Luckily you can have multiple tabs open, so at least you can "tab" back and forth.

Autofill will be an awesome feature to add, but we had many requests to make 1Password information available on the iPhone **now**, so we decided to release this version even though autofill is not complete yet. Now that the first *huge* step is complete (secure storage of data on the iPhone) we can work on adding some cool new features, like autofill :)

A future version of 1Password for iPhone will allow you to automatically enter your data.

DTEARE  I'm not sure why the icon decided to leave. We'll look into the cause from our side and see what's happening.

In the meantime, it should be easy to fix: simply go into the 1Passwd preferences, go under the Browsers panel, and reinstall the extensions in the affected browsers.

GETSOMESAUCE  (shoot, I too intended mine to be a reply, but turned into an independent post...so I'm reposting it here)

Mr. Teare - Regarding the widget concept, I've mulled over a couple of concepts, and the following seems to make the most sense. The "security" portion of my desires is what has me at the moment, nonetheless, here I go.

I envisioned a widget with a pulldown menu at the top from which I could select my desired information, say "Quicken Checking Account". After selecting it from the menu, there would be two text fields below it which provide me with my username and password (in clear text)...and also perhaps a third "notes" field. As a side note, when I need a password, I don't really need my password, I just need to be reminded of my password. Nonetheless, if desired, the user could select and copy the username and/or password from the text fields to be pasted where appropriate. On the security end of things, I suppose that a programmer could use the "lock" (like Apple uses to unlock certain preference panes) to allow a user to access the password database, or the programmer could assume that if a user is logged into the machine, then they should have valid access to the database at all times. Perhaps that could be a user-option. Also, once the user hides the widgets, the password fields would clear, "relock", or relock after a certain number of minutes, as preferred by the user. On the programmability end of things, if 1Passwd.app is not running, can you build a widget that can still access the datafile? Perhaps a user could even eventually enter password data through the widget...but that might be for future design.

My programming skills aren't up to snuff, so I can only hope that you can make sense of what I wrote. Good luck!

I agree that "Gaming the system is for losers, cheaters, and liars"; but finding a piece of software that makes a former lurker passionate enough to signup and post is respectable.

DTEARE  The 1Passwd password manager is able to protect you from phishing attacks. I have made this claim before, and several people have questioned me exactly how a password manager can protect them from phishers. In fact, the majority of password managers cannot protect you. Any password manager that relies on you manually entering your information into a web page offers no protection whatsoever.

This is where 1Passwd shines. It automatically fills forms for you so you never need to manually type your login information again. This not only has the benefit of saving you time and allowing you to use stronger passwords, but it also protects you from phishing scams.

You can watch a high-resolution movie on how this works on the phishing protection[1] page (near the bottom), or the low-res version on Google Video[2].

Cheers!

DTEARE  Version 1.4 of 1Passwd was announced earlier tonight. Mac Update will have the new version within the next few hours.

The biggest change is the algorithm used for the automatic form filler (aka AutoFill). The new logic is able to complete most web forms with a single click. You can test 1Passwd's form-filler by using our AutoFill test page at http://1passwd.com/demo/auto_fill_using_identities.

For a full list of changes, see http://switchersblog.com/articles/2006/08/13/1passwd-v1-4-now-available.

DTEARE  Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback!

Actually, we *did* have support for supporting the default keychain (even if it wasn't login.keychain), but we made a mistake and it was never published into the final product.

I'm sorry about this, it was my fault. The next version of 1Passwd will use the default keychain (the one in bold in the keychain access program) when importing Safari passwords.

Thanks again!

DTEARE  Hi Jeff,

Thank-you for taking the time to comment on 1Passwd; we are constantly trying to improve and value all feedback.

I suspect that the problem you are encountering with being required to login is related to the built-in inactivity timeout. This is a security feature that will automatically lock the keychain after a certain period of inactivity. In the first few releases of 1Passwd, we set this timeout to an aggressive 5 minutes. Many people mentioned that they didn't require such a high level of security, so we have since changed the timeout to 60 minutes.

This is, however, just the default setting. You are able to change the inactivity autolock to whatever time you want, or disable it completely. For more information, refer to http://1passwd.com/guide/admin/keychain_settings.

Cheers!

DTEARE  Hi COMPUTERNAUT,

Thanks for taking the time to comment on 1Passwd; I'm happy to hear your enjoying it.

Currently there is no feature to have 1Passwd automatically fill & submit a site without any user interaction. I like this idea, and have added it to our TODO list. Hopefully we can add this in one of the upcoming releases.

Thanks for the suggestion! If you have any more ideas or suggestion to improve 1Passwd further, please let us know.

Cheers!

DTEARE  Many people ask why 1Passwd needs to have a Safari extension -- after all, Safari has an AutoFill feature and already uses the keychain. The reason 1Passwd is needed is because the AutoFill of Safari does not go far enough for most user's needs, and it only works in Safari (obviously). Our goal is to provide the best Password Manager and Form Filler that works *seamlessly* across browsers, without ever needing to manually transfer passwords or saved forms back-and-forth.

I detail how 1Passwd goes beyond Safari's autofill here: http://1passwd.com/guide/about/going_beyond_the_safari_autofill, but here are the highlights:

1. Multiple Identities: allows you to have a different persona based on who you are dealing with.

2. Seamless browser support: 1Passwd supports Safari, Firefox, and Flock. Camino support should be coming soon.

3. Simpler selection of Saved Forms, including Fill & Submit to save you several keystrokes and clicks.

4. Quickly Generate Strong Password

5. Safari Matches URLs **exactly**. 1Passwd allows you to fill a page from a saved form that doesn't have the exact same URL. This makes logging in after a registration possible.

6. 1Passwd Works on all Forms, including those with "autocomplete=no"

I hope that helps explain why 1Passwd is needed for Safari users.

DTEARE  Synchronize from Safari, Firefox, and RoboForm to the 1Passwd Password Manager.

We have had several requests for the ability to import existing data into our Password Manager for Mac. Some users wanted to import Safari's default login keychain. Others wanted to move their Password Manager data from Firefox into 1Passwd. Those switching to Mac from Windows desperately wanted to import their passcards from RoboForm. One Mac power user had over 300 entries that he wanted to migrate from Safari into 1Passwd! Clearly something need to be done to automate this process.

With its latest release, 1Passwd is now able to import user entries from Safari's default keychain, Firefox's Password Manager, and complete passcards from RoboForm. For details on how to import from Safari, Firefox, and Roboform, see http://1passwd.com/features/import_safari_firefox_and_roboform.

DTEARE  Several users have asked about the built-in password manager in Firefox and how 1Passwd compares to it. While Firefox does come with a built in Password Manager that is quite nice, it has several limitations that 1Passwd aims to fix. You can read the full story of 1Passwd vs. Firefox password manager here: http://1passwd.com/documentation/onepasswd_vs_firefox. The following are the highlights:

- 1Passwd keeps information synchronized between Safari and Firefox to allow easy switching.

- 1Passwd integrates directly with the OS X keychain to allow easy backups and synchronization between machines.

- 1Passwd is secure by default — a password is mandatory and there is a built in inactivity timeout.

- 1Passwd can handle complete forms, not just user ids and passwords.

- 1Passwd has identities to allow automatic filling of form fields.

I hope this helps to clarify how 1Passwd goes a step beyond the Firefox Password Manager. As always, comments are welcome!

DTEARE  I just wanted everyone to know that this version of 1Passwd DMG file contains the original open source SIMBL.pkg installer. We just realized that this installer has a "phone home" type of spyware enabled.

The 1Passwd browser extensions themselves have absolutely NO malware. We would not be in business very long if we spied on our clients. However, the SIMBL.pkg installer is currently "calling home", so you might want to wait for the next release if this concerns you. The next release will have a totally revamped installation program that will remove the need for the SIMBL installer.

For more information on this, you can see my post on a Lesson Learned: http://blog.osxcommander.com/articles/2006/05/20/lesson-learned
