The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile
Jan 17 2007
****.

DSFQFDSSFQDFSQD  the price is high and there are some quirks (I always get 8 unresolved items , the same, over and over again in my contacts) but overall it works like expected, which is a lot. I want my syncs to go unnoticed and most of all, no nasty surprise. I can handle having contacts in double, but not erasing them all! both of which haven't happened yet.

so, i'm pretty happy with it, and wish the developper will concentrate on furthering robustness and reliability instead of adding features. also, I wrote a question to tech support and got a response in 3 days (personal) so that's good, too.

MITCH  hello,

I have not used yet idefrag, and understand the developer's concern for piracy. Surely they must do whatever they can to prevent this copyright infringement (using a pirated serial is not theft, as a material property does not exchange hands) that deprieves the customers from a better product and the company of their bread because of lost sales. But the last posts from the developer scared me a little bit: I do not think you should push it as far as saying "there is no code, since it shouldn't be run" and think you should explain what the app sends as personal information, even in the case of a pirated serial. You cannot use the techniques of criminals in order to fight them, or else you will lose your customer's confidence. Also, I completely disagree with the method outlined in the last post: "once we have that information, if the customer buys our product, we delete it, otherwise, they will hear from us" To me this is extortion. I believe you should politely contact the infringing party and ask them to delete the product, notify them of their act. Most people do not think it is bad and need to be educated, not punished. In case of bad faith or continued bad behaviour, then the authorities should be called.

ALEX27  I talked too fast - pocket mac completely trashed my calendars. Some entries are still ok, but most are now unreadable (example: M‚Äö?Ñ??‚àö‚Ć‚àö‚àǬ¨¬®¬¨¬©moire!) . It should be avoided until the developpers have resolved the problem.

this is really strange since pocket mac only syncs its own calendar, I don't see why it would modify the other ones. Maybe it has to do with the accented characters problem?

Of course, always backup your data before using sync tools for the first time.

ANONYMOUS  just bought pocketmac lite v3.44, unfortunately before reading any reviews just cause it sounded really good and it was cheap. i guess that is what the company is going for. i don't see how people ever get it to work.

first, it installed ok. when i double click the desktop icon, the menu bar utility runs and finds my ipaq. after that, nothing. i tell it to open the pockemac window, and it does nothing. i tell it to sync, and it tells me it cant find the application pocketmac. looking in the program folder (which is in the /library/pocketmac directory (!) ...why not just put it in the applications directory i don't know) there is a pocketmaclite.app and a unix terminal script called pocketmac. the former opens the pocketmac main window when i double click it and will sync my address book, but not ical. the latter doesnt run. if i change the name of pocketmaclite.app to pocketmac.app, the menu utility will at least open the main window where again i can sync the address book but not ical.

while i can sync once, if i disconnect my ipaq and quit pocketmac and then try to re-run pocketmac for a second sync, it crashes (spinning beach ball) and i have to kill the program processes either from terminal or the activity monitor. also, if i take my ipaq out of the cradle, putting it back on the cradle does not resync it with pocketmac. it seems that pocketmac runs some background processes (DCCMDaemon and PPPDaemonPM) that dont quit when you exit the program. when you run the program again, a second instance of these background processes opens, which crashes the system.

uninstall is a nghtmare as there are a dozen files and folders which are left on the HD that have to be manually removed.

now these problems do not seem at all related to the type of hardware the software is running on. it seems to stem from very poor programming of the software itself. the software does not call its own modules properly and does not cleanly install, uninstall or exit.

i emailed their tech support and got an answer within 8 hrs asking me to run their logging app and send them the results. i did this and browsed throught the text dump. it seems that pocketmac lite doesnt interact with OSX very well and does not install many of the required program components.

Now i am happy to help the software programmers out if the software works but my own system configuration is problematic, but i didn't sign on to be a beta tester for this program. alot of these problems are easily fixed by writing good code. i sincerely hope that the fix the code in this product, cause it actually seems like the sync part of the program has a chance of working correctly if the support application is coded appropriately.

i'd be interested if other have had a similar problem with version pocketmaclite v 3.44 downloaded from the website.

ALEX27  Honnest comparison between missing sync and pocket mac by a real user and not a partisan.

Bottom line: both have big problems, but work well too for many things.

Pocket Mac:

can sync pictures and tunes to the storage card (big plus). Just like missing sync, an option to reencode tunes on sync at a lower bit rate would be nice too, just like resizing pictures works fine.

BUT it doesn't manage accented characters (!!! it displays garbage like ??33&é2ç((3 for each accented char, that is unacceptable) and uses its own calendar in ical (that's really a pity as I already have many calendars and do not wish to put all entries in a single one.) so it's useless for me as I mainly use it for calendaring and on a english system with french text. Also it leaves a lot of files behind after uninstall. It is much faster on syncing though (though that's the fault of iSync, not missing sync).

Missing Sync:

Works well for me. itunes and iphoto synchronization work fine but there should be an option to copy to storage card instead of built in or I always have to move to the storage card afterwards since space is limited in my built in memory.

An option to reencode tunes on sync at a lower bit rate would be nice too, just like resizing pictures works fine.

Calendar, contact and tasks sync are fine, no corruption like stated below and I've been synchronizing in both directions for weeks with lots of entries. It doesn't synchronize recurrent events and that's a big problem.

This is not a complete review, but why I chose one over the other, and their major pitfalls.

I personally use missing sync because it looks cleaner, but I understand why people would prefer pocket mac (if you do not have many different calendars, use a US system with no accents, and do not mind having a more "windows like" application, pocket mac seems more feature complete to me)

All this to say there is no real winner between both, each have its strengths and shortcomings. I also thinkk both are overpriced, although I am sure they necessitate a lot fo work, a price in the mid 20's would be more appropriate. $19.99 would be a killer tag. I believe they should really offer evaluation version, and that each product has its bugs. I also believe most of the comments on them on macupdate come from partisan users, or worse, developpers themselves trying to boast their product and sink their competitor's. I sincerely hope this will cease to make place for real reviews and comments. They should work hard to address the shortcomings I outlined and they would have great softwares.

I can be reached at alex27@dodgeit.com (public address, everyone can read it) if the developers wish to take contact with me (both ignored my only support asking email to them, I really have no time to bicker and send many to get an answer). I will update my reviews as versions come and go, and add or correct features.
