GlimmerBlocker
Oct 9 2009

DREAMKATCHA  Yes, it blocks ads, but unfortunately that's not all it blocks. With this enabled, half the pages I (try to) visit need to be refreshed before they'll appear, and the ones that do load first time take three times as long. I'd rather see the ads than go back to dial-up speeds, thanks.

I tried to uninstall it as per the instructions and the 'activate GlimmerBlocker' checkbox was greyed out so I had to delete the preference pane and then re-install it just to see if GlimmerBlocker was the cause of my problems. It was.

CORINNA  I had the exact same problem. I was prepared to blame my ISP, but I removed GlimmerBlocker and the problems disappeared. I have a new problem now: ads.

Movist
Nov 9 2008

DREAMKATCHA  I've only just discovered Movist, but I'm definitely considering making it my default video player.

All the issues I had with VLC are solved:

- It remembers your playback position (bookmark support in VLC is non-existent despite the option being there for window dressing)

- You can sync the volume to that of your system's main volume level, which saves a lot of hassle when you often switch between headphones and speakers

- Less cluttered, more intuitive Mac-like interface

- The Apple remote behaviour is more logical i.e. clicking left or right to jump x seconds forwards or backwards rather than holding the buttons down, which can result in accidentally skipping to the next video.

- Essential options such as video stretching aren't buried away in the most obscure sub-menus.

The only glitch I've found is that when you skip backwards, the audio stalls momentarily. Strangely enough it kicks in immediately when you skip forwards.

One option that might need a bit more explanation is 'under scanning'. What does that do?

Other than that I'm extremely impressed and am looking forward to the next update.

DREAMKATCHA  Just some odd behaviour I thought you might appreciate me reporting...

Choosing not to add recordings to iTunes has no effect - Radio2ipod has a stab at it either way.

The entries that automatically appear in iTunes, however, are unusable because it claims not to be able to locate the original files even though they haven't been moved from the desktop. To play them back or move them to your iPod you have to manually import them and delete the original entry from the library.

DREAMKATCHA  Just upgraded to the latest version and noticed that it plays what it's recording out loud making it impossible to listen to other audio at the same time.

I can't seem to find a way to mute the app independent of other system sounds. Any help would be much appreciated.

DREAMKATCHA  While it's great to finally see a Mac link checker with a GUI it would be nice if it didn't try to crawl whole web sites when you instruct it to only check a single page.

It 'ignores' links you tell it not to follow yet lists them in the results as 'not checked' anyway. I assume this means that every link on a site has to be taken into account before the process finishes and the results are shown. In my case this means waiting until it has plodded its way through nearly 2000 links.

SHIELADIXON  Thanks for your feedback. I've already had a suggestion of a 'check this page only' checkbox, as well as an 'only follow links containing...' feature. These things would allow you to limit the crawl to one page or a specific area of a site. Look out for these features fairly soon.

DREAMKATCHA  I tried this app for one reason alone: to enable the cut and paste options within Finder's context menu.

I was able to cut a selection of files, but when I switched to another folder to paste them found that no such option appears in the context menu. The only way to make the files re-appear in their original location seems to be to select undo from Finder's edit menu.

The files are instantly removed (or at least become invisible) when cut so I suspect if you didn't reverse the operation before powering down you'd lose them for good. Not exactly ideal.

I'll stick with the free and reliable Onyx, thanks.

ISHAN  I wouldn't call Onyx reliable. I've had it do serious damage (i.e., an unbootable system) after what would should have been a simple font/user cache cleaning. MacPilot is feature rich, and I like the many options. The most sophisticated IMHO is TinkerTool System, but you get what you pay for, in terms of GUI. The simplest, and one which I always have installed is AppleJack, which works only in single user mode and avoids a lot of the problems that all of the other system maintenance utilities can cause in an actively running system.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  I would call OnyX reliable, as I've used it since its inception and never had any issues with it. Of course, anyone's mileage may vary. I've also never, but never, been bitten by any Apple updates whether they be OS updates or application updates, since OS X 10.1. So there's a case where many people's mileage has certainly varied.

I also should state that while there are a couple of versions of OnyX available now that are newer than the one I use, including a recently released beta, I've stayed with OnyX 1.7.5 after trying the newer versions, except the betas. Not that I am afraid of betas. Generally speaking I install them and use them all the time. I just like OnyX 1.7.5 better, the UI. My current hardware: 15" MBP 2.33 GHz running OS X 10.4.9.

DOSBox

DREAMKATCHA  It seems to totally ignore any changes I make to the default DOSBox.Prefs file and doesn't recognise the 'conf' command when I try to remind the app where the config file is located.

After setting the frame skipping to 1 and increasing the CPU cycles I managed to run Command & Conquer at a reasonable speed on a Mac Mini 1.4ghz with 512mb RAM.

DREAMKATCHA  This is one of the few apps worthy of a permanent place in my dock. I use it every day to record a variety of BBC radio shows and it works flawlessly 99% of the time. As cliched as it is to say it does exactly what it promises... it does exactly what it promises. Excellent work!

DREAMKATCHA  More trouble than it's worth - don't waste your time.

I installed SDL and created the (sometimes) necessary symlinks yet nothing will launch through Radnor.

My DOS games work fine when executed from the vanilla command line version of DOSBox, and E-UAE works which suggests that my installation of SDL is functional.

DREAMKATCHA  I love these one-function, no nonsense tools that do exactly what they promise to do, but why is it 100mb when uncompressed? Does the .app incorporate a camouflaged Norton application? ;)

PGRILO  UNO 1.3.1 dmg is about 16 or 17 MB (to be released very soon), version 1.3 was 100+ MB.

Why, you ask... Well because Mac OS X resources are full of "air" and UNO has a lot of those resource files (were do you think all the options come from?).

Yes, we could compress them inside the app itself, decompress on the fly and we plan to do it in the future (testing being done), but not without extra (and I mean EXTRA) security/integrity check. We are dealing with very importante (essential, infact) OS files, there is no room for errors here or you could end up with an unbootable system and passing those files through another proccess will need extra security/integrity verification.

So the answer is : for Security proposes.

PGRILO  A big BIG thanks to MacUpdate for the incredible support!

Version 1.3 of UNO wouldn't have been online for more than 4 hours if you people (MacUpdate) didn't came to the "rescue" (our bandwidth limite wasn't ready for such a hit at the time), and we are deeply thankful for that.

But in the meanwhile we decided to put some more money on it and decided to move up to a unlimited bandwidth web hosting plan, so we could host UNO.

Again, a huge thanks for all your friendly support and specially for supporting freeware!

Keep up your great contribute for the Mac Community!
