DP8  In some cases developers may accidentally set the wrong version information in their app, or may submit something different to us, which may account for some of your issues. We work closely with developers to try to resolve these types of problems. You can use the "Set version to current" to override the local version number in these cases. DP8  SOULSLAVE - The AppUpdate widget was broken due to a change we made in the site, and has now been fixed. It had nothing to do with whatever submission you are referring to - it had been broken for 2+ weeks since we made the changes. We do not have a public API for apps like this to access our data, and the developer was hacking things to get the widget to work. Earlier this year we worked out an arrangement with the developer of the widget to help ensure that the it does work properly and does not affect our site adversely. We have a good relationship with the developer of the widget, and could just as easily block all access from the "competition" if we wanted to, but we don't.

ENJOURNI - MacUpdate has been tracking Mac software for over 12 years, and yes, we do have quality guidelines and regularly reject submissions for different reasons. We state this to all developers when they go to submit their apps to us. That is our job and what we have been doing since day one. Apple and Versiontracker do the same thing for their listings. As I mentioned in another post, we do not track competitor's products, just as they do not list ours. Believe it or not, people do equate Macupdate's experience to AppFresh's experience, and are dumb enough to think AppFresh somehow related to/supported by/endorsed by MacUpdate. We actually get a ton of support emails by inexperienced users wanting help for apps that we simply list - I am glad that you are smart enough to differentiate MacUpdate from other developers, but many do not.

We have been working hard to make MacUpdate Desktop the best Mac updater app available, and have a lot of plans for it looking forward. We are not trying to steer users away from alternatives, or complaining, or pretending AppFresh doesn't exist. We are focused on providing timely, accurate, and high quality information to the Mac community and want as many Mac users to keep their software updated and secure, and feel that MacUpdate Desktop is the better way to do it.

DP8  Misha was correct as well - we also don't list it because it does not meet our guidelines (you said it yourself - it has issues). We don't approve several submissions a day for the same reasons.

Also the keyword listing issue applies to any app that we don't list but has a comparable application - we want users to be able to find what they are looking for, and if we don't list it, then find something as close to the functionality as we can get. In this case, MacUpdate Desktop is the close match.

You won't find a listing for MacUpdate Desktop on CNET/download.com/Versiontracker for the same reason we don't list competing apps. You also won't find a link to MacUpdate Desktop from the AppFresh site. We are not doing anything shady here - just following common and accepted business rules.

We have never "broken" integration in the past, but we have updated how our site works, which has caused the widget to not work consistently. We require a user account to sign up for the free trial specifically so that you can use the Watch List features. Watch Lists are linked to user accounts so that they can synchronize with the website - you can add/edit/remove lists from the application or the website, or, add applications to your lists from the site, and then later install them with 1-click in MacUpdate Desktop. We are not boxing in anyone - we just want to provide a 100% functional trial - not a limited/stripped down version.

I am sorry if you somehow feel that what we are doing is "slimy", but I can say that we strive to be open and honest with both users and developers about everything we do. If you have any further concerns, please feel free to contact us directly - desktop@macupdate.com

DP8  If you remove the ".app" extension from an application bundle, the Finder will convert it to a normal folder, and it is no longer considered to be an application. MacUpdate Desktop will scan for non-bundle apps as well, such as some older carbon based executables, and those do not need to have the .app extension.

DP8  The login panel has a "Register" button, which will present the MacUpdate Member Registration window - you enter in your name and email, and then on the next screen you can select "Trial" or payment method. If you already have a MacUpdate member account for the email address you enter, it will use that account for the Trial, otherwise, it will create a new Trial membership.

DP8  Most likely, you are hiding or blocking the referrer when you are browsing (various security programs enable this for "private" browsing).

In order to download apps hosted on MacUpdate servers, they need to come from macupdate.com domain names. So if you block the referrer URL, it can't see that and loops you back. This is to prevent extreme bandwidth costs from direct outside linking.

Try disabling the referrer blocking - or contact me desktop@macupdate.com and I will be glad to help you out.

As for titles not matched - there could be a few reasons why they didn't - A) we are not tracking them currently - please submit them to us for review, or B) there is no way to acquire or download them independently (like Photo Booth), or the developer does not offer updates (like Apple has never had a stand-alone Photo Booth updater) or C) MacUpdate Desktop was unable to automatically match the title for some reason. You can either submit to us from within the application, or send me an email - desktop@macupdate - if you just have a list of apps.

I have responded to a few people who commented on this thread and am not sure why they keep posting inaccurate information here.

MacUpdate is a well established leader in Mac software tracking - we have been around for over 12 years, and respond to all support requests that come in as fast as we can.

If you have paid for a membership, you simply need to log into the application using your member email and password - there is no separate registration number or code.

DP8  "Set to Current Version" will override the local version number reported with the current version number from MacUpdate.com. This can be useful especially when developers make a mistake and do not properly update the version information when they release a new version. When this happens, MacUpdate will continually report the app as out-of-date, even when it is actually the latest. We work closely with developer to try to get them to fix their errors, but this is a stop-gap solution for our users.

How to "Unset Current Version"? - there is no reason to unset - if a newer version comes out, it will be reset and updated to hopefully the new correct version number, unless the developer makes a mistake again.

DP8  The Bodega application is nice, but is nothing like MacUpdate Desktop - it does not show all of your applications (only the ones it "knows about", it does not show Widgets, Screen Savers, or Pref Panes. It also does not have anything like Watch Lists, and does not automatically install your updates for you with one click (it only downloads). It also does not come close to being able to identify and match what MacUpdate Desktop can. Simply put, the apps have different purposes and uses - they are primarily selling you new applications, while we are trying to help Mac users keep their apps up-to-date. Please give it try.
