DONPERREAULT I commented earlier about how I thought Parallels upgrade price was high. I just read for "Customers who purchased Parallels Desktop 4 for Mac on or after October 1st, 2009 are eligible for a free upgrade to the new version." That means if you spent $79.95 on Sept 31st, 2009 for Parallels, you would have to fork over another $50.00 to get the upgrade. That is sad! (Version 5.0.9220.531002)

MISHA I deleted the thread complaining about upgrade price because assigning a poor rating based solely on pricing is misleading. Look at the feature set and then decide whether it's worth the money or not, shooting from the hip because it's a paid upgrade is not helpful to other users. Fusion 3 is a $40 paid upgrade and their cut-off date was only 3 weeks. That would be a good point to make alongside complaining about Parallel's upgrade price and free upgrade eligibility period. So would other points comparing the two apps, like the fact that Fusion 3 doesn't support OpenGL 2.1 under Windows 7 (Parallels does) or that Parallels takes full advantage of Intel's VT-x2 technology, which delivers performance improvements. Keep in mind I'm not saying Parallels 5 is better than Fusion 3 (although the specs seem to indicate it is, but I'm not going to put stock in just what each company says about its own products), I'm just pointing out what distinguishes an actual review or useful comment from troll fodder. To give any app a low star rating because their customer service has been less than responsive in the past, because they charge for upgrades, or because they once released a buggy version isn't useful. By all means make those comments, but make them as part of a more useful and comprehensive review of the version of the app you're "reviewing"... (Version 5.0.9220.531002)

Parallels Desktop | Nov 4 2009 |
REVCO Misha: You deleted the thread? MacUpdate is littered with comments/reviews from people pointing out unfair upgrade policies. What makes this one so different that you had to delete it? (Version 5.0.9220.531002)

Parallels Desktop | Nov 4 2009 |
DR. GIRLFRIEND Sorry, Misha, but I disagree. Customer service from the developer, stability (or bugginess, in this case) of the app, and how frequently bugs are addressed are all very important to my decision-making process when purchasing or upgrading an app. I think this is true for a lot of people, especially when there are similar apps at the same price-point or even free. I understand your point and will keep that in mind, but perhaps you should have changed the review to a comment instead, rather than deleting it altogether. As Revco said, it's common practice on MU to point out flaws and unfair upgrade prices in reviews. Also, if there is a pattern of neglect by the developer, we deserve to know about it so we can spend our money elsewhere. If you delete some reviews and not others, it seems weird. What about "reviews" where the person says "Great!" or "I really like this app!"? Those aren't helpful, imho, but they're all over the place here. As long as the person has owned or used the app, I'm interested in what they have to say. Censoring some reviews and not others is a slippery slope that I hope MU doesn't descend. Thanks for your hard work though; we do appreciate you trying to keep MU clean and fair. (Version 5.0.9220.531002)

Carbon Copy Cloner | Oct 14 2009 |
DONPERREAULT I made a grave error this morning and blamed Carbon Copy Cloner for a problem related to the HFS+ filesystem. I should have contacted the developer before writing my comment. I then went on to promote SuperDuper as a great backup utility, which it is and went on to dismiss Carbon Copy Cloner as not being as reliable as SuperDuper. However, after the developer spent a good amount of time explaining to me what the problem was I have to retract my comment of Carbon Copy Cloner, it was all wrong. So in retrospect I really screwed up. I think both Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper work as advertised. You the user can decide which you like best. Carbon Copy Cloner | Oct 13 2009 |
DONPERREAULT I've been using Mac's since 1989 and over the years I have lost irreplaceable data on multiple occasions. So, I have learned to backup on a regular basis, maybe to the point of over doing it. Besides using my DroboPro I have 2 external drives that I switch out to back up my complete System & data. Been using SuperDuper for years w/o a hitch until a couple of weeks ago I got an error and wasn't in the mood to track it down. So I download Carbon Copy Cloner (it's free) and that worked, well it appeared to work. Dave from Shirt Pocket contacted me and we worked out the problem. Long story short I switched back to SuperDuper and I have never been happier about my backups. However one of my backup drives was still backed up with CCC and here is were the problem started. I installed some beta software that I can't talk about because of a non disclosure agreement and it messed up my main System drive. I tried reverting my startup drive using the latest backup from CCC and when I reinstalled much of my data was missing. I spent several hours picking files from the DroboPro that CCC had deleted or replaced with older versions. I was totally frustrated, never mind chewing up most of my day. SuperDuper Rules and don't let anyone tell you different. Folks, SuperDuper are crackerjack developers who know what they are doing. Stick with SuperDuper you won't be disappointed. My apologies to Bombich but his software is not reliable in my situation. I'd rather pay $27.00 for software that is going to come through for me when I need it. (Version 3.3)

DONPERREAULT I purchased this application when it was first released. Yank was supposed to observe what files that were being installed on your computer when you ran an application installer/package so at a later date if you decided to remove the application Yank would delete all associated files for that said application. However, you needed to launch Yank and select the Application installer so Yank could observe where and what files the application installer were installing. Sounds great in theory but unfortunately Yank failed to work most of the time and often would freeze. Because of numerous problems I had with Yank I stopped using it. Haven't heard anything about it since today, when I saw that the developer released version 2.0. You can just drag & drop files from the Finder to the server sitting on your desktop and in Finder window sidebar. DONPERREAULT I have been using Expandrive for almost a year and rely on it daily. I log into my ftp accounts without having to open a specific application like, Transmit, Flow or Forklift. ExpanDrive 2.0 brings with it Amazon S3 support, thrilling. ExpanDrive is so simple to use. Each account appears to be just another hard drive on your desktop, you drag & drop files just like you do when moving files via the finder. I uploaded a 3MB file in less than 30 seconds with my 30 Mbps Comcast connection. I did notice that with the larger files ExpanDrive hogs all the power from the cpu and you can't work with the Finder until the upload/download is complete. So, unfortunately with large files over 100MB I recommend using Transmit or another FTP application. (Version 2.0)

HMURCHISON What exactly makes you a "loyal" customer? Just because you purchase something doesn't entitle you to claim your loyalty IMO. HMURCHISON $25 a lot of money? I guess relative to the price of a cup of coffee. Mailplane is a pretty simple concept. There are web apps and desktop apps. Web apps tend not to integrate within the OS (just the browser) for most things. Mailplane takes desktop app features and grafts those onto a web app. I don't know if it has offline features but for those who aren't always connected it would be nice to create a bunch of emails offline and send them when connected. You also have integration with desktop apps like Omnifocus. In the end $25 is a lot cheaper than any speeding ticket you're going to receive and the family pack is only 8 bucks more. For the past couple weeks I have been putting KM to rigorous testing and it has not failed me yet. The macro capabilities seem endless and the built in server is brilliant. It is freak-in awesome to be able to launch macros from my iphone, from anywhere in the world. I am not affiliated with the developer in anyway, I just think this new version is Brilliant! ExpanDrive | Mar 20 2008 |
DONPERREAULT When I transfer files over a couple MB ExpanDrive brings my Finder to a halt. I can tab to other apps and they work but it is a pain. I still am happy with ExpanDrive for small files. (Version 1.0.4)

ForkLift | Mar 17 2008 |
DONPERREAULT This is great Mac company. I purchased my copy of Forklift through one of those bundle promotions last year. My OLD serial works with the new version of ForkLift, awesome! This is a what I consider to be a major upgrade and the developers didn't charge for the upgrade. Kudo's to Binary Nights for their efforts. Those d*ckwads over at Yazsoft ought take notice. BTW: I didn't purchase the MacHeist bundle but have followed the Yazsoft controversy and have sided with theYazsoft customers. (Version 1.5)

Toast Titanium | Mar 17 2008 |
DONPERREAULT I fell for their 9.0 hype and purchased yet ANOTHER upgrade to Toast. Roxio does not appear to appreciate their loyal customers. They continue to charge top dollar for their upgrades. I rarely use Toast, yet I continue to upgrade. So who's the fool? ;) (Version 9)

iBank | Mar 13 2008 |
DONPERREAULT After praising iBank 3 when it was released I have changed my opinion of it. I spent the last few weeks entering all my data in iBank 3. Now I encountering errors trying to reconcile my statements. I sent a message to tech support twice asking to acknowledge receipt of email and I received no response. Guess its back to Quicken and spending hours replicating my data into Quicken. iBank 3.0 had great potential. (Version 3.0.1)

iDupe | Mar 6 2008 |
DONPERREAULT I found Dupin to be much more accurate and faster duplicate scanner. Dupin can be found at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/ Along with numerous iTune scripts. Very impressive collection of scripts. (Version 2.3)

Disco | Mar 2 2008 |
DONPERREAULT I am thrilled to see the developers have taken an interest in Disco and updated it. Lets hope they continue to support Disco. Maybe, then we will regain our faith in these developers and support their new projects. Thank You Guys (Version 1.0.3)

DONPERREAULT Interface takes some getting used too. But the price is very high, IMO. Hopefully the developers will be successful. (Version 1.0)

SpamSieve | Oct 27 2007 |
DONPERREAULT Indispensable application for handling spam. IE: When I went on vacation I neglected to keep my Mail application & SpamSieve running on my Mac at home. Therefore, I was inundated with spam, making it impossible to check my mail with my iphone because I has so much spam. (Version 2.6.4)

DVD2oneX | Feb 27 2007 |
DONPERREAULT May not be the best user interface but it beats Toast hands down in speed and compatability. Try burning a Video_ts folder that contains empty cells with Toast, the said DVD will stall in your DVD player and be unplayable. With DVD2One you can deactivate the empty cells and burn a DVD that will work with your DVD player. I'd rather burn DVD backups that work and with DVD2One you get backup DVD's that work. Fetch | Jan 14 2007 |
DONPERREAULT I have been using Transmit for a few years now but upon trying the new web view feature of Fetch have switched to using Fetch for my FTP. Fetch makes it so easy to edit my website with the click of 1 button, it is great. There is a great feature that you can use to put files up for other people, such as coworkers or customers, to download, this works wonderfully for files that are to big for email. Give it a try you won't be disappointed. (Version 5.2)

EagleFiler | Oct 15 2006 |
DONPERREAULT I have been switching between StickyBrain (SOHONotes) and Yojimbo as my primary file manager for months. Neither of them completely capable of my needs. Yesterday I noticed a mention of EagleFiler on John Gruber's website Daring Fireball. I installed EagleFiler and imported my saved files from SOHO and Yojimbo, spent some time tagging the files and I have to say EagleFiler performs flawlessly. The ability to tag the files with Keywords is necessary for a great File Manager. Both StickyBrain and Yojimbo force the user to use categories for filing which is very limiting. EagleFiler is awesome, give it a try u won't be disappointed (Version 1.0.2)

Sandvox | Mar 4 2006 |
DONPERREAULT I have been using Sandvox since the 1st public beta. I am very impressed with the simplicity and speed that Sandvox aides the user in creating a magnificent looking website. IMHO, Sandvox is the best program available today for the beginner trying to create a personal, professional looking website. Sandvox is not just for beginners it allows the professional designer to customize the HTML. Included with Sandvox are many elegant looking templates to set the overall appearance of your website. I highly recommend anyone interested in website development to give Sandvox a try. (Version 1.0b14)

DeskBrowse | Jan 3 2006 |
DONPERREAULT What is the purpose of limiting users to 30 minutes of use? I understand you would like users to purchase your product but limiting the user to 30 minute intervals just forces the user to switch to another browser so he can continue browsing. If you had any confidence in your products success you would give the user a fair trial period. (Version 1.0b3)
