Xslimmer | Aug 28 2008 |
DNEM41 This is a wonderful application that will pay for itself with just a few uses. Google Earth was reduced from 111 MB down to 61. Firefox went from 46 MB down to 28. MacJournal 32 to 20. The amount of space being saved is arguably negligible considering my 320 GB hard drive plus 160 external HD. But it is how much faster these apps are after getting rid of the universal binaries and other language packs. I love the change log which keeps track of all apps that you have been "slimmed" which allows me to 'remember' the numbers I just spit at you above. A first time user of course should be scared about slimming an application useless, so I started with free or open source apps (like Firefox, Google Earth, LiveQuartz, etc...) that you can easily re-download if something happens. But before that could even happen, Xslim provides a user-generated "blacklist" of apps known to have issues after being "slimmed". And of course you choose how frequently you want that list updated. If you come across an app that wasn't on the blacklist, you can report it for future users. And hopefully you have backups on, so you can easily refer to them and have the whole app back again. Very useful and smart application. I would give it 10 stars if I could. Anyone agree? Thanks developers! (Version 1.5.3)

JESSOPHER Yes, the latest version works with leopard with ape 2.5. You just have to open the package and edit the Info.plist file to include a tag APELeopardCertified with the boolean value true set. I have done this and recompiled it from source (don't know if this last step is necessary) and you can get it from http://kilobase.net/files/WindowDragon-Leopard.ape.zip Hope it works for you too (Version 1.1b2)

DNEM41 developers please keep working on this! yes iChat is better, but this is the only program so far that allows me to screen share (and control) with my girlfriend (who has a Windows). if you could pretty much copy everything iChat does and transfer those capabilities to Yuuguu, you will win! the capability to screen share with Windows users is a game-winner right there. (btw - i hear Apple's workin on iChat for Windows. they already have iTunes and Safari. i guess iChat's next...) (Version 1.0b1)

MINDMAP | Jul 5 2008 |
DNEM41 first of all, MindNode (whether intentionally or not), fits users that are more visually-geared. i mean by being able to easily manipulate the visual location, color, and position of a group of nodes with the child nodes, all with little effort and thinking makes this app very appealing to me. there was a lot in that sentence. there are like 2 keyboard shortcuts for you to know, then you can drag and place: a single node, a group of nodes either fellow sibling nodes and/or its child nodes and organize them in a way that makes the most sense for you. im really surprised this app doesn't get infinite downloads a week. but i tried a look at the other apps (like MyMind, MindJet, NovaMind & FreeMind) to see what the reasons might be that they are so much popular. first i notice they are much more text based. i mean that you write an outline, then it shows you a visual representation of a mind map. now you can move around the nodes in the mind map and they pretty just change the order of topics in the outline. now, this is good because it keeps your outline updated. there are set of rules in order to make that happen, so you cant really put the nodes any-gosh-darn-where you freely choose. now i guess that's good because it keeps your outline updated, but what if you don't give a fuck about an outline just yet? you, being a visual thinker, just want to put your ideas somewhere and arrange them visually. after some rearranging you will pretty much have a better idea of which are the main(est) ideas, separated into topics, subtopics, facts and analysis. so in short, this is the best mind mapping software for visually-based thinkers. while the others help you focus on writing the outline/paper while a mind map helps you visualize. obviously no software is perfect, which is why i gave 4 out of 5 stars under value. so developers, please perfect it. sorry to leave you hanging, but i don't feel like getting to much into it right now.

DNEM41 hi everyone. i noticed this app doesnt NEARly get the same amount of downloads as its "competitors". first of all, MindNode (whether intentionally or not), fits users that are more visually-geared. i mean by being able to easily manipulate the visual location, color, and position of a group of nodes with the child nodes, all with little effort and thinking makes this app very appealing to me. there was a lot in that sentence. there are like 2 keyboard shortcuts for you to know, then you can drag and place: a single node, a group of nodes either fellow sibling nodes and/or its child nodes and organize them in a way that makes the most sense for you. im really surprised this app doesn't get infinite downloads a week. but i tried a look at the other apps (like MyMind, MindJet, NovaMind & FreeMind) to see what the reasons might be that they are so much popular. first i notice they are much more text based. i mean that you write an outline, then it shows you a visual representation of a mind map. now you can move around the nodes in the mind map and they pretty just change the order of topics in the outline. now, this is good because it keeps your outline updated. there are set of rules in order to make that happen, so you cant really put the nodes any-gosh-darn-where you freely choose. now i guess that's good because it keeps your outline updated, but what if you don't give a fuck about an outline just yet? you, being a visual thinker, just want to put your ideas somewhere and arrange them visually. after some rearranging you will pretty much have a better idea of which are the main(est) ideas, separated into topics, subtopics, facts and analysis. so in short, this is the best mind mapping software for visually-based thinkers. while the others help you focus on writing the outline/paper while a mind map helps you visualize. obviously no software is perfect, which is why i gave 4 out of 5 stars under value. so developers, please perfect it. sorry to leave you hanging, but i don't feel like getting to much into it right now. im tired. DesktopCalendar | Jun 20 2008 |
DNEM41 please keep developing this. i do not know enough code to add/edit anything, otherwise i would. i like being able to navigate thru the months directly from my menu bar under the "Go" submenu. but i find it cumbersome to go thru all the menu/list items to get there. this is an extra bell and whistle that most beginning users wouldn't even care to do, but users who've had this for a while might find this feature useful. also i had the appearance customized exactly how i wanted it, then tried one of the presets under the appearance list. i wish i would have been more careful because this erased my previous setup. i know it didnt actually "erase" anything, but i had to go thru all the font lists again just to get it back to my favorite setup. i would like a feature that would be able to save or simply "remember" my previous setup. GORDON142 Jdarkroom does everything this app does the same way textedit does everything MS word does. jDarkroom has nowhere near the options Writeroom has, and it doesn't integrate well with the Mac OS at all. For example, unlike Writeroom, jdarkroom does not support standard Mac OS text services (spelling/grammar, all OS Services menu items, dictionary lookup, etc), and for that matter, it is simply a plain text editor while Writeroom is a rich text editor with good support for formatting. It can even open and save to other formats. Again, if Jdarkroom works for you, great, but asserting that it "does everything writeroom does" really just demonstrates that you haven't used either application. (Version 2.3.7)

Menu Eclipse | Jun 15 2008 |
DNEM41 This is a good application, but I want it to do better. I feel like if enough people use this, the developer will have to add new features users want. First, I'll give it 5 stars because it's the best thing out there that works with Leopard. Menufela & Menushade I hear good things about for people who don't have Leopard. BUt apparently these apps will cause the blue screen of death and the developers haven't done anything to update it yet. I can hope hope the developers are reading this right now. One thing I like is the ability to customize the level of "blackness". This is pretty much the only thing it does and sort of the only thing I was looking for. But now that I've used it, a few ideas came to mind. I would like more options, like the ability to hide it (just like hiding the Dock). I know this is vastly different and requires different code from just covering it up. So a huge thanks to the developer if he can update this with that function. Also, I currently have the app in my Dock for easy access. However, I would like to have it in my menu bar (ironic isn't it) to avoid taking up more space in my Dock. In essence, I would like it to be in the background. I don't wanna know it's there. I'm going to keep this app until I find something better, but hopefully the developers will update this with more features before Menufela or MenuShade update their apps for Leopard. Isolator | Jun 12 2008 |
DNEM41 i already posted comments on this, but forgot to rate it. its not exaggeration that i gave this all 5's. this is a simple little app that lets you focus on the front window. i have used DooDim, Backdrop, and Think 1.2. DooDim was my first love, but dumped it when i accidentally crossed paths with Isolator's arsenal of features. Isolator did everything DooDim did, but was sold on the one-button dim. Didn't like backdrop because the icon shows up in my command+tab window. plus i feel like my machine ran a little slower. Think 1.2, was going the wrong direction because i dont want another window when im trying to focus on the task at hand. One last thing about this app (and other like these) is that i love using it in conjunction with Menu Eclipse. menueclipse is a small app that dims out your menu bar (the last frontier of Mac screen real estate). menu eclipse is good enough for now, but i would like something with a few more options and MenuShade doesnt work yet for Intel iMacs. furthermore, (and maybe this is a little too much to ask, but) i would like the ability to have windows occupy the top where the menu bar would be. it would be neat if i could have something that would auto-hide the menu bar (just like I can autohide the dock). i have a lot of things going on (like iStat) so the menu bar's distracting, and its good that i got a little app that covers it up. but i would like to be able to have windows where the menu bar would be. does anyone have any suggestions? Isolator developers - you rock! (Version 3.39b)

DNEM41 Yea, I used this for about 4 minutes and decided this was a keeper. Prior to Isolator I was using DooDim. I needed something to block everything out and DooDim was just the first one I stumbled across. It was good enough until I saw this on the front page of MacUpdate. Tried it out and really liked the one-click dim feature. Also, I really like the blur. Very simple, but I never thought of it myself, and therefore didn't know I wanted it. Also tried out Backdrop (which is shareware), but didn't like that the Backdrop icon showed up in the command+tab window. (Version 3.2)

DNEM41 i just want to start out by pointing out that this is a 5 out of 5 overall, and that i gave EOU and features rating a 4 and a 2 respectively. thats because im hoping the people who made this will pay attention to these because this app is so close to being the perfect note-taker: - i would like the ability to copy and paste screenshots into and out of the note when it pops up. sometimes i just need to hold a screenshot where i can see it until i decide where i want to use it for good. in essence the note-taker would act as a visual clipboard. - i wish i could adjust the timing of the open and close separately. it gives me the option to choose whether i want to open with hotkeys only or close with hotkeys only, but it groups the popup/close delay as one setting. sometimes i would like it to open faster and close slower using my mouse. that way i can use my mouse to bring it up immediately and go and grab what i want to paste it into the note w/out it closing on me real fast. - yes i would like the option not to have/adjust the auto-save option. i usually end up saving it manually if i think its that important anyway. -overall, using the drag menu to navigate between notes when the note is open is pretty easy. - i do wish that right underneath the drag menu, the icons were on the bottom instead. if this would get rid of the drag pad that is already at the bottom, then this would be a problem (since i like to sometimes move it up and down the side), but maybe the drag space can be put somewhere else (or hopefully it wouldnt interfere with it). - yes, the expose thing is annoying but i can deal w/ it in the shortrun this is like the only 6 things out of the maybe 8 that are stopping this from being the most functional/useful note-taking app out there. its already the best, in my opinion, but that doesnt mean it cant still be made better.
