DLWHITE @ANG, perhaps you missed my point. MyNotes is a simple, no-frills, note taking app. My point was that it makes no sense that Evernote, being this massive juggernaut of a program with so many accolades and fanboys, is seemingly unable to do something that the MyNotes program has allowed me to do for years. Can anyone explain that to me? Evernote doesn't offer the option to let me manually reorder content - as iTunes has allowed us all to do (for FREE) for YEARS. It seems like an egregious oversight in an otherwise exemplary program. So why doesn't Evernote CORRECT THIS GLARING OMISSION? It's my data. I want to put in whatever order I please. That's really not a lot to ask of a standalone app, is it??? (Version 1.5.1)

DLWHITE I've tested Evernote periodically, but it's never been compelling for ONE SIMPLE REASON: It doesn't let you manually order your notes (like in iTunes playlists.) A simple program like MyNotes will let me order my notes, but Evernote won't? WTF? iTunes has given us this simple, natural functionality for YEARS now. It's what people are accustomed to. It's what people WANT to be able to do. It's MY INFORMATION. Let me ORGANIZE it how I see fit. Evernote, PLEASE catch up. I cannot fathom what the possible excuse is for not including this bare-bones functionality. It should be cost-of-entry for any note-taking app. (Version 1.5)

ICONZ113 Another thing would be being able to remove EN from the startup items. After you manually remove EN from startup items, once you activate the app, it adds itself to start up list again. I try to keep the things that startup when I log in to a minimum, I already have other things starting up and if I don't need the helper running anyway, why not let me remove it. How about implementing that into a future release? The only thing that bugs me. (Version 1.5.2)

DLWHITE Can anyone help me with this? I've created a new folder, and created a few new notes within that folder, but I can't reorder them manually. I can only sort by Title, Kind and Date Modified. What I'm trying to do is add days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, etc. And be able to put them in whatever order I want. A tiny program like MyNotes lets me do this with no problem, but Evernote does not. (WTF?) Surely SOHO Notes, now on version 8, allows me to do something so simple as reorder my notes, iTunes playlist style... We've been reordering iTunes playlists for YEARS AND YEARS. I need to be able to reorder my notes with the same ease.

StuffIt Expander 2010 | Sep 28 2009 |
DLWHITE I haven't tested recent versions of Stuffit against the zip compression included in the Mac OS. A few years ago, Stuffit was able to make considerably smaller files than the standard zip compression, so lots of my vendors kept purchasing updates as they were released (a bit too frequently for my wallet). Does anyone know if Stuffit still makes smaller files? Or has the zip compression improved to the point where Stuffit is simply unnecessary? (Version 2010 14.0)

ROBACKJA Try looking into 7za or Bzip2 compression (plenty of free tools also). ZIP is by far the worse compression (especially for things like text) but is also the most compatible. (Version 2010 14.0)

StuffIt Expander 2010 | Sep 28 2009 |
MISHA StuffIt's .sitx compression does produce smaller files (especially if you set it to maximum compression, which takes longer). The downside is ONLY StuffIt can decompress .sitx, so whoever you're sending the file to will be forced to download Expander. Also, in the age of $75 1TB hard drive and 20Mbps bandwidth, I question whether making a 10MB file 5MB (with .sitx) or 7MB (with .zip) really makes any difference (my example is arbitrary, btw, I'm not saying .stix compress that much more than .zip). JAMUS DL, take a look at the JuneCloud Automator actions for making .zips. Here is what I wrote over on the paid Stuffit link... Then I came across the JuneCloud "Create Clean Archive" Automator action.... Goodbye Stuffit. DLWHITE In VisualHub, there was a DVD setting that created a .ISO file which could easily be burned to DVD (by Roxio's Toast, for instance.) That setting in VisualHub also allowed me to choose NTSC or PAL formatting for the DVD I was authoring. Is there a comparable setting in iVideo Converter that allows me to drop in a video file and convert it to a .ISO file for easy burning to DVD? If not, why not? And what other video converter (besides VisualHub) offers .ISO creation? Thank you for your help! MacUpdate RULES. (Version 2.0.2)

DLWHITE Extensis is refusing to provide a free auto-activation plugin for Quark XPress 8. If you want that functionality that they HEAVILY advertise as a core feature of their software, you're going to have to fork out extra money to purchase the new Suitcase Fusion 2, due this fall. But they have NO PLANS to make Suitcase Fusion compatible with Quark XPress 8. So anyone considering buying Quark 8, know that it won't work with Suitcase Fusion. Anyone else feel screwed? DLWHITE As yet, Quark 8 has no font auto-activation. And Extensis/Suitcase Fusion has no plans to provide a free plug in to make this happen. If you want to auto-activate fonts in Quark 8, you'll have to pony up the fees for Suitcase Fusion 2, and there's not even a release date for that software yet. Unconscionable behavior by all parties. Quark 8 has been out for months. And although Quark has a long history of sketchy customer service, this must be a new low for Extensis. Is there another professional font manager that supplies font auto-activation with Quark 8? (Version 8.01)

Companion | Jul 28 2008 |
DLWHITE This is a feature Desktoptopia should have included years ago. I actually bought a license for Desktoptopia, long before it was a free service, and despite its excellent potential, the developers move far too slowly implementing any new features. If you haven't tried Desktoptopia, you definitely should. It's cool as heck. And this Companion software is a MUST-HAVE addition to the service. SWO At first I found it a bit intimidating. It's physical layout isn't the best, and is almost anti-intuitive, but if you're somewhat anal in terms or organization of your computer (which I am) and actually give it a chance, it works great. In fact, last night I found myself putting tags on my mp3 and video files (I literally have thousands). As I did it, I wondered if this was the right way to use Leap, but it worked for me. I have gotten into the habit of, literally, sending every document (like pdf's, mp3's etc) into Leap and tagging them as I get them, so that there is no backlog of untagged documents or files. If I were to summarize Leap's behaviour, I would say that it's like Spotlight on steriods and not for everyone, but those that really give it a try will not be able to do without it. Photon | May 15 2008 |
DLWHITE My mind is still boggling at how much time Photon saves me in my photo workflow. If you shoot or work with tons of high-res photos, you probably have a good idea of how valuable time is. And you owe it to yourself to at least demo this app. It's a magic time-making machine. Every day you're not using it is a day you're spending a little more time than you need to be sorting and culling photos. And over the course of a day, week, month, year, the vast quantities of time you save makes the license cost negligible. IMHO. (Version 1.1)

LARRYMCJ I still keep in touch occasionally with the YummySoup! developer and I believe in the end his product is going to be better than MacGourmet Deluxe, the only competition IMHO. When YS! finally gets a nutritional database (I'm guessing in v2.0) along with a few other missing features, I believe it will the leader in the cooking/recipe software genre. Without a doubt, the YS! import feature is much better than MacGourmet, and for me this is important.

Desktoptopia | Nov 7 2007 |
DLWHITE I LOVE THIS SOFTWARE! And my wife does, too. I highly recommend trying it. All the images are vetted by the developer and there's a little something for everyone. What I like best is the sense of expectation and surprise. You never know what the next image will be. That sense of playfulness helps the work day go by faster. (I rotate every 10 minutes.) Some other reviewers question the cost, but I feel like I get my money's worth every day. Sure, I could spend an hour looking around online for new desktops every week and have the OS cycle through them for me, but who's got that much free time? And it's much more FUN when you don't know what will be coming up next! Seriously! I'm happy to buy into Desktotopia on the grand floor, because I think it's just going to get better as they increase the quantity and variety of images in rotation. I hope that's where they're putting their development energy right now. (If you're an artist/photographer, you can submit desktops, too!) I'm in a proxy server environment, and I had to tweak my Mac's network settings to get things rolling, but it works fine now. Try it. You won't regret it! (Version 1.0.4)
