ClamXav
Dec 7 2008

DEREKCURRIE  At this point in time it is important to note that ClamXav is over a year behind in its definitions of Mac malware. It is able to detect and remove Trojan OSX.RSPlug.A, discovered in September 2007. However, malware definitions for more recent Trojans are not built in. Specifically, there are no definitions for Trojan OSX.RSPlug variants B through E, Trojan OSX.Lamzev.A or OSX.Trojan.PokerStealer. Therefore, I consider it practically pointless to use it to detect and remove Mac OS X specific malware.

I am attempting to find a source for the missing definitions in order to have them provided to the Clamav developers. Wish me luck.

Meanwhile, as usual, ClamXav is a very good free anti-malware program for detecting and removing Windows specific malware.

An alternative FREEWARE anti-malware program for Mac OS X is iAntiVirus from PC Tools. It ONLY runs on 10.5 Leopard, but is entirely up-to-date.

Of the commercial anti-malware programs for general use, I only recommend Intego VirusBarrier, despite its cost. For business/enterprise users I recommend Sophos Anti-Virus.

I attempt to discuss current Macintosh security concerns at my blog:

VoodooPad Lite
Nov 20 2008

DEREKCURRIE  Note that the version 3.5.2 of Voodoo Pad Lite is too stupid to realize that version 4.0 is NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.11. Sadly the installer is ALSO too stupid to check what version of Mac OS X it is installing into and happily wipes out your good copy so it can replace it with a worthless copy of 4.0, totally screwing over your ability to use the program in 10.4.

I have written the developer about their bugs.

It is great that this excellent program is provided for free. But self-sabotaging programs are not tolerable. :-P

DEREKCURRIE  Putting FLAC files onto an iPod is rather pointless until such time as Apple adds the code to iPods to allow FLAC files to be played. Beats me why Apple didn't add this ability years ago. It costs Apple nothing at all to do so as FLAC is Open Source. The only reason I know of that Apple stick with Apple Lossless is that it allows the inclusion of DRM rubbish. FLAC does not. But there is nothing inherently subversive or pirate oriented about FLAC.

Pester Apple to get native FLAC support in iTunes and the iPod.

OmniWeb
Jun 17 2008

DEREKCURRIE  Sorry, but the criticism of the OmniWeb bookmark system is entirely unwarranted. OW was the first, and for a while the only, browser to have a sane bookmarking setup. As soon as I became an OW addict I made it my main bookmark archive and I've never regretted it. All my other browsers import their main bookmarks from my OmniWeb installation.

I've got other bookmarking gizmos including the free and functional AllBookmarks menubar app. But I rarely use them. I just use OW.

If anything, OmniWeb has so many bells and whistles features that it can be intimidating. But I always have found it worth doing the old RTFM routine to figure everything out. It is amazingly configurable compared to everything except FireFox.

For many years I have been an OW beta tester. No way is it perfect. But the folks at OmniGroup are incredibly helpful and friendly. They pay attention to every single bug report and feature request I send them. I do keep Camino or FireFox around because there are limits to Apple's WebKit regarding screwed up HTML such as the proprietary crap HTML and JScript perpetrated by Microsoft. The Mozilla browsers are not nearly as nice as OmniWeb, but they are more Microsoft rubbish savvy.

Well worth the minimal cost many times over. And I don't get paid to say that.

BitClamp
Nov 9 2007

DEREKCURRIE  I like the sound (pun) of the bells and whistles in this app. But the fact is that Leopard has BETTER encryption built-in (256 bit) and back to MOS 10.2 you can already do 128 bit AES encryption. All this is via Disk Utility through the use of '.sparseimage' disk images. I've been using sparseimage disk images for over two years with great success, including being able to share them with others. You can also toss any extension at the end of any file to fake it's file type and associated icon, which is sort of like the crafty covert files feature.

The special features in BitClamp are kewl and nicely priced IYAM: Ease of use, Growl access and Sparkle updating. But the features of Disk Utility and MOSX itself cover all the other bases.

FileGuard X5
Nov 2 2007

DEREKCURRIE  I've been using most of the features of FileGuard for years through the use of sparse disk images in MOSX Disk Utility. The unique features of compression, open and closed icons, and drag-and-drop creation are rather costly even at $29.95. And, my sparse disk images work all the way back to 10.2.x.
